    George Wettlaufer.

This gentleman has had large business experience, but he is a new beginner in Hawksville and will have his share of the public patronage. He comes from German ancestry, his father being a native of Hesse Darmstadt, Germany. George was born on his father's farm near Philipsburg in 1850 and is therefore in the 48th year of his age. He worked on a farm until he purchased the flouring mills at Wellesley village. This industry he operated for eight years and had encouraging success. But the annoyances connected with the running of a grist mill were not conducive to his nature. The average miller is often the victim of distrust by patrons who imagine they are being taken advantage of in toll, though the miller may endeavor to be conscientiously honest in all his dealings. On this account Mr. Wettlaufer has adopted the general mercantile business. He considers it far more congenial, as when a customer comes in he has an opportunity to see what he is getting, goes out satisfied, having reliance upon his own judgment. Mr. Wettlaufer came to Hawksville on January 22nd last, as the successor of Daniel Weber. The store is one of the oldest in the village and has done an immense business in its day. In latter years its trade was somewhat on the decline, but since its new occupant has taken charge there has been a decided increase in its patronage, owing, no doubt, to the fact that the former prices have been cut down considerably and a heavy stock of first class general merchandise kept constantly on hand. Everything that the average household needs in this line will be found there and at the lowest margin on cost. Attentive and obliging clerks are employed. Mr. W. P. Rennie, an experienced and clever salesman, has charge of the establishment.

Mr. Wettlaufer formerly owned a large farm near Shakespeare, but this he recently sold in order to give his exclusive attention to mercantile pursuits. He was married in 1875 to Miss Elizabeth, daughter of Mr. John Rennie, a prominent farmer of North Easthope. They have a fine family consisting of seven children, three boys and four daughters, all single and living at home. They live in cozy residence adjoining the store. One special feature connected with this home is its magnificent lawn. It is certainly at complete manifestation of admirable taste and refinement in the home of a country village. He that loves a congenial home can look upon it with envious eye. It is a miniature wilderness of ornamental shrubbery, plants and vines, and fruit trees. Great care is exercised in keeping it scrupulously neat and clean. In connection with the lawn is a very fine vegetable garden. Nine times out of ten in a home thus beautified you will find a peaceful and happy family circle. Mr. Wettlaufer has made a decided improvement in his store by adapting the acetylene gas light, which renders the interior almost as brilliant as the noonday sun The telegraph office is also located here. Miss Ada Wettlaufer is the operator Mr. and Mrs. Wettlaufer are adherents of the Presbyterian church and their family is among those most highly esteemed in the community and they will undoubtedly be encourage to make Hawksville their place of permanent residence.
