Waterloo restaurant closing after 86 years

Harmony Lunch has been serving up meals for 86 years. But soon the Waterloo restaurant will close its doors for good. Owner Bruce Marks says he's selling the King Street business for personal and family reasons. His father, Harry Marks, purchased the property in 1930. At that time it was a dance club called Harmony Hall. Harry Marks turned it into a pork slider shop and re-named it Harmony Lunch. A fire destroyed the upper floors of the building in 1932. But many of the building's features and equipment date back to its early years. Four generations of the Marks family have worked at Harmony Lunch over the last eight decades. Staff members say the decision to close has been difficult for the family. "It took them awhile to make the decision," says assistant manager Sandra Wilson. "All good things end at some point and there was never really a good time." Customers say they're sorry to see the restaurant close. "There aren't a lot of places like this left," says Mary-Anne Hummel. "Places come and go. There aren't that many business that transcend from one generation to the next. But change is inevitable I guess." The closing date has not yet been set. The family is asking for $1.4 million for the property. Offers will be considered after September 6th.

    _______________________

"Marks was born in 1902 on a 200-acre farm in Listowel. He had ten brothers and sisters so when he moved to Waterloo in 1916 to help an older married sister, it was a shock. "I was in a big bedroom all by myself. I was used to going to bed with four kids to a room. I used to cry myself to sleep every night." He helped his sister, a dressmaker, with the chores and with her two young children, and it was during these years that he learned to cook.

Marks got his first job at the Roschman Button Factory on what is now Regina Street when he was 16-years-old. He went from polishing buttons at 10 cents an hour, to being trained as a tool grinder. He left, however, over a dispute when he discovered that men under him were making more money than he was. His demand for a salary of $1,200 a year was not met."
