Oliver Martin's Death is Almost Certain Now
Work of Rescue is Given Up

It is now almost a certainty that Oliver S. Martin of Waterloo, traveller for the Hibner Furniture Co., of Berlin, lost his life in the terrible railway wreck at Webbwood, on the C. P. R., at the bridge over the Spanish river.

Ever since the news of the catastrophe was flashing on the wire, first, friends here have been busy endeavoring to get information. It was extremely difficult to do so. But on Monday afternoon a message was received by his wife at Waterloo, stating that some of his baggage had been found among the wreckage. News was also received that he had called on customers at Sudbury, but had not reached the Soo, where he was next due.

These circumstances all caused grave anxiety and a despatch from Sudbury seems to confirm the fears that he has been lost. A hat, bearing the initials O. S. M., and the dealers name, John Ritzer of Waterloo, is certain to be that of the missing man, and is conclusive evidence that he was a passenger on the ill-fated train. The had was found by divers, but the body has not been recovered.

The Canadian Pacific officials come in for a littel share of indignation on the part of the friends and relatives of the victims. Even as yet, it is stated, friends cannot find anything about the disposal of the remains of their loved ones.

It is doubtful whether the body will ever be recovered as the work of recovering the bodies of the victims of Friday's disaster stopped last night and it is altogether likely that the remaining bodies in the first-class couch slipped into the river and were carried away by the current when the attempt was made to raise the car further up the bank. It is reported that seven were lost when the car broke and buckled. The remainder of the second-class car is not out of the river, and may still contain a number of bodies.

The late Mr. Martin was about 42 years of age, and is survived by a widow, one son about sixteen years old and an adopted daughter. Mrs. Elisha Schiedel of Port Elgin, is a sister.

Mr. Martin was a member of the Waterloo Evangelical church and some years ago was an active member of the Waterloo Broom and Brush Company.

He was preceded in death by one daughter (Beatrice) and one brother (Harvey). He was a member of St. Jacobs Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held on Dec. 31, in charge of Glenn Brubacher and Vernon Leis; interment in St. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery.

On Monday, Dec. 29, 1975, at his home, 54 Church St. W., Elmira, in his 72^nd year.

Beloved husband of Laura Dettwiler; dear father of Mrs. Milton (Naomi) Shoemaker of Route 1, Elmira, Mrs. Marshall (Mary) Musselman of Route 2, Elmira; Mrs. Lloyd (Violet) Marvin and Calvin, both of Elmira; 16 grandchildren also survive; he was predeceased by his parents, one daughter in infancy and one brother.

Friends may call at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until Wednesday morning at 11 a.m., when removal will be made to St. Jacobs Mennonite Church for funeral service at 2:30 p.m

Burial in St. Jacobs Mennonite cemetery.

Donations to the Ontario Heart Foundation will be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.

BETTY ELAINE ZEEH (nee Martin) 1927 - 2009 Passed away peacefully, on December 30, 2009 at Forest Heights Long Term Care Centre, Kitchener. Wife of the late Don Zeeh. Mother of Beverly Gall of Kitchener, Brian (Maureen Lorentz) of Listowel, and Doug and his wife Brenda of Waterloo. Grandmother of Ian and Brian Gall (Kristy) and Lorraine (Justin) LaCelle all of Kitchener, and Craig and Ryan Zeeh of Waterloo. Great-grandmother of Ayden, Keegan, and Jayce LaCelle of Kitchener. Predeceased by her parents Hilda and Earl Martin, sons Dennis and Gregory, brother Firman "Marty" (Helen) Martin, and sister Audrey (Harold) McKee. Friends are invited to share their memories of Betty with her family during visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Tuesday, January 5, 2010, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2010 in the chapel of the funeral home at 11 a.m. Interment at Mount Hope Cemetery, Waterloo will take place immediately after the service, followed by a reception at the funeral home. AUDREY JEAN MCKEE 1929 - 2007 Passed away, peacefully at St. Mary's General Hospital on December 19, 2007 at the age of 78 years. Beloved wife of 58 years to Harold. Loving mother of David McKee and his wife Phyllis Warren, and Erin McKee. Devoted grandmother of Allyson and Chris McKee. Sadly missed by her sister, Betty Zeeh. LANG, Anson - Passed away peacefully at The Village of Winston Park, Kitchener at the age of 91 on February 4, 2007. Beloved husband of the late Betty Lang. Survived by his sister, Thelma Zlateff of Kitchener. Also survived by his sister-in-law, Myrtle Koch of Waterloo and by his nephews, David (Peggy) Morrow of Waterloo, Robert (Karon) Morrow of St. Jacobs, Cameron Koch of Philadelphia, Douglas (Maureen) Koch of Victoria B.C. and his niece, Carol Elliot of Waterloo. Predeceased by his parents, Fred and Edna (Zinn) Lang. Brothers-in-law, Earl (Mildred) Morrow, Claude Koch and John Zlateff. Anson was a longtime employee of the New Dundee Creamery for over 46 years, he was a member of the New Dundee Board of Trade and the New Dundee Baptist Church. Anson also played in the New Dundee Band and Volunteered with the Fire Dept. for a number of years. Cressman. - Beatrice Faith, beloved little daughter of Eden and Laura (Dettwiler) Cressman died Nov. 30, 1934; aged 4 m. 2 d. Beatrice was never very robust, but was sick only two days with pneumonia. She leaves her sorrowing parents, 3 sisters (Naomi Loretta, Mary Elinor, and Violet Arletta), 3 grandparents, and many other friends. The funeral was held Dec. 2 from her home to the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church for services, Bro. Moses Brubacher and Bro. Curtis Cressman having charge. Interment in the Conestoga Cemetery.
