Albert Breithaupt Drowns, Wife Pulled From Lake
Well-known Kitchener Resident Disappears With Sinking Boat

HONEY HARBOR, Ont (CP)-Albert Breithaupt, 84-year-old Kitchener industrialist, was drowned yesterday in a boat collision near this Georgian Bay resort area. He was an uncle of Louis O. Breithaupt, lieutenant-governor of Ontario. Mr. Breithaupt's wife Gladys, who was in the boat when it sank, escaped unhurt and was pulled from the water. The accident scene was about seven miles north of Honey Harbor, which is 25 miles northwest of Orillia. Mr. Breithaupt had been vacationing at his cottage here.

    LIFELONG RESIDENT

A life-long resident of Kitchener, Mr. Breithaupt once worked for the Breithaupt Leather Co. Ltd., which was founded by his father. It now is owned by the lieutenant-governor's family. He helped found and develop three other Kitchener companies. He leaves four sons and two daughters, Fred and Arthur of Kitchener, Rudolph of Waterloo, Dr. David, of Toronto, Mrs. H. E. Martin and Mrs. R. A. Gordon, of Toronto. His first wife predeceased him in 1942. The boat, a 16-foot craft with an inboard motor, overturned in the crash and Mr. Breithaupt disappeared before rescuers could reach him. He had been on his way to Whallen's island for supplies. It is believed he was trapped behind the wheel and was unable to free himself because of a hip condition. Search for the body is continuing.

    NINTH AREA VICTIM

Mr. Breithaupt was the ninth Waterloo County resident to drown in the past month. Karen Winslade, 6, of Ayr, drowned in Ayra last Sunday. Arthur Weber, RR 2, Breslau his son Richard 9, and daughter Shirley, 12, were drowned in a pond June 29 near Hespeler. Five-year-old Andrew Pilkington drowned July while swimming in the Speed River near Hespeler. David Brenneman, 14, of Haysville, drowned in the Nith River July 16.

Mr. Breithaupt was the last surviving member of the family of the original Louis Breithaupt, and had lived all his live in the homestead built by his father in 1870. He remained active to the end of his life, his last business interest being in sales work with a company he started, the Shoe Findings Company. He helped found one of the city's first rubber industries in the building now a part of Dominion Rubber Company, Ltd. on Margaret Avenue. The factory on Young street now occupied by John Forsyth Ltd., once house a ladies wear firm which was developed by a group including Mr. Breithaupt. He also organized the former Berlin Trunk and Bag Company which is now occupied by the Greb Shoe Company. Interested in public life, he was an alderman for several years and unsuccessfully contested the mayoralty when Dr. J. E. Hett was elected.

A member of the high school board, he was especially interested in promoting manual training. In the early years of this community, Mr. Breithaupt was a member of the Berlin Light Commission. He was a member of Zion Evangelical UB Church and was on the denomination's board of Christian education. He taught in the Sunday school here for most of his life. An enthusiast in the early days of photography as a hobby, he returned to it in his later years and was an ardent color photography fan. Interested in woodworking, he made many pieces of furniture for his Georgian Bay cottage.

Mr. Breithaupt had spent each weekend this summer at his cottage, as well as some full weeks. However, he returned to make his regular calls on shoemakers in several communities between Galt and North Bay, driving his car on road trips in spite of his advanced age. He liked to retain his interest in the leather trade and found his sales trips valuable for this. His first wife, the former Louise Anthes, died in 1942. The present Mrs. Breithaupt was the former Gladys Baechler. Funeral arrangements have not been made pending finding of the body.

Jim Breithaupt remembered for dedication to serving the community

NEWS 08: 42 PM by Johanna Weidner Waterloo Region Record

Waterloo Long-serving Kitchener MPP Jim Breithaupt has died.

Breithaupt passed away last Wednesday at the Freeport campus of Grand River Hospital. He was 83.

"He was a good fellow," said longtime friend Harold Russell. "He was a person who made a terrific contribution to the civic life of the community."

Born in Kitchener in 1934, Breithaupt became a lawyer and then deputy judge, and proudly served in the Canadian Army militia.

Breithaupt was elected MPP five times, representing Kitchener at Queen's Park from 1967 to 1985 as member of the Liberal Party.

"He was a good politician and a good voice for the community," Russell said.

John Milloy, former MPP and Liberal cabinet minister, met Breithaupt in 1981 as a young Liberal volunteering on Breithaupt's re-election campaign.

"He was someone who was very astute politically," Milloy said.

Milloy said the five back-to-back wins were especially impressive given that Breithaupt was an opposition member. He was respected and well liked both at Queen's Park and in the community.

"He was always very popular," Milloy said. "He had a good way with people."

When Milloy later became MPP for Kitchener, he said he often turned to Breithaupt for advice and guidance.

"I was always proud to have Jim Breithaupt as one of my predecessors," Milloy said.

Breithaupt had a self-deprecating sense of humour, and his military background was apparent in his appearance and demeanour, Milloy recalled. His shoes were always polished, his outfit tidy and he was "unfailingly polite."

Breithaupt's family has a long history in the area.

His grandfather A.L. Breithaupt was a son of German immigrant Louis Breithaupt, who founded the Breithaupt Leather Company in the mid 1800s. Breithaupts served as city councillors, MPPs and MPs, and were very involved in community and church.

In a 2009 Record article on his family's legacy, Breithaupt credited his family's reputation for winning his first election as MPP. He just assumed he would serve the community.

"It sort of goes from one generation to the next," he said. "We just keep offering and it seems to be well accepted."

Breithaupt was active in numerous organizations in the community, including the Royal Canadian Legion, the Concordia Club, and German Pioneer's Day committee, and he received many medals and honours.

"He was involved in the community in an amazing number of ways," said Russell, who met Breithaupt in the 1960s in the militia as young captains and then later brought him into the Waterloo Historical Society.

"He was a very civic-minded person," said Russell, adding that Breithaupt was proud of his family's name and traditions, and wanted to carry that on in the community.

Breithaupt received a doctor of laws degree from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2006 and was honoured as one of 100 "alumni of achievement" on Laurier's 100th anniversary.

While vice-chair of the board of governors for the Waterloo Lutheran University, as it was then called, Breithaupt suggested the name of Wilfrid Laurier when the university became a provincial institution in 1973.

Breithaupt was commissioned in the Royal Canadian Artillery after completing officer training in Manitoba in 1952-54. He served in various command roles before returning to Waterloo to practise law and then transferred to the Scots Fusiliers of Canada '97 the eighth officer member of his family.

When it amalgamated with the Highland Light Infantry, Breithaupt served in the Highland Fusiliers of Canada as company commander, rising to commanding officer from 1971 to 1973.

Breithaupt is survived by his wife Jane, children Jennifer and Martha, and grandchildren.

A visitation is being held at Erb & Good Family Funeral Home in Waterloo on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.

A private family service will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Waterloo.

Donations in his memory can be made to the Last Post Fund, a charity Breithaupt supported that ensures all veterans get a dignified funeral and burial.
