Abraham Weber," the second son of Henry Weber, was born October 2nd, 1787. In 1807 he in company with Benjamin Eby and wife, Joseph Schneider, wife and family, Peter Erb and wife, David Eby, Samuel Eby, and others, came to Canada and arrived at what is now Berlin, Waterloo County, on June 21st. Here Abraham Weber located on lot No. 15, German Company's Tract. His buildings were located on the west side of King Street, a little to the south of the Grand Trunk Railway where now is the beautiful residence and lawn of W. H. Bowlby. Soon after his arrival he was married to Elizabeth Baumann who was born October 16th, 1788, and died June 12th, 1847. They raised a family of three children"

On the 19th of February, in Waterloo township, Waterloo Co., C. W., of , Bro. ABM. WEBER, aged 79 years, 4 mo., and 17 days. He was born in Lancaster Co., Pa., in 1787, and went to Canada in 1807. He lived and died a faithful member of the Mennonite Church. He was buried a (sic) Eby's burying ground. Funeral sermons were preached by Joseph Hege and George Schmidt, from Heb. 13;14.

Back to 1807 and 20-year-old Abraham Weber. He built his farmstead in the centre of his lot, close to 2017's King and Victoria. All vestiges of Weber's buildings have disappeared but one incidental structure lingers. At some point, Abraham gave refuge and work to an ex-slave named Levi Carroll. Levi and his family are among the earliest identifiable blacks in the German Company Tract. They appear in a later, well-known photograph from the 1880s featuring their home, the original 1820 Waterloo schoolhouse. It was then located on Lot 16 near the collegiate but is now in Waterloo Park.

Abraham left the farm in the late 1830s when son Abraham C. took over. Then, in 1855, the Grand Trunk Railway route split Lot 16 in two, so Abraham C. sold most of his land to George Grange who had the property surveyed and began selling industrial and residential lots.

Soon after their marriage they moved on the farm now possessed by Eli Horst, situated on the line between Woolwich and Waterloo Townships, about one-half mile east of the Martin Mennonite Meeting House. Here they resided until their deaths. He died October 14th, 1889, and she died June 19th, 1889. They had a family of seven children"

Abraham C. Weber," the youngest son of Abraham and Elizabeth (Cressman) Weber, was born in Berlin, Waterloo County, Ontario, March 14th, 1817. On October 23rd, 1838, he was married to Judith, youngest daughter of Peter and Anna (Zimmerman) Martin. She was born January 2nd, 1821, and died March 12th, 1884. After their marriage he moved on his father's farm, being composed of part of lot No. 15, German Company's Tract. Here they resided until the Grand Trunk Railway was built in 1855, when they sold their large farm and purchased that of Benjamin Shantz and Stafford's farms at Freeport. Here they resided until his death which took place July 6th, 1874. She resided until his death which took place July 6th, 1874. She resided with her son, Moses, on the west side of the Grand River, near Chicopee, where she died. He was ordained as minister of the Gospel for the Mennonite denomination, December 22nd, 1850. He preached regularly and attended frequently at funerals. His time was largely occupied in visiting the sick and giving words of consolation to such who were seeking their spiritual welfare, and his life was a busy one. So much of his time was devoted to his pastoral duties that he was almost unable to attend to his private affairs. Although sacrificing much of his time in the service of the church of his choice, he would not receive any compensation for the time devoted in behalf of the church, but looked for his reward beyond the present life where the faithful labors in His vineyard shall be spiritually rewarded for all ages of eternity. They had a numerous family, being composed of sixteen children"

First Mennonite Church

The first church built in Waterloo County was erected in Berlin in 1813, and was known as Benjamin Eby's Meeting House.

Benjamin Eby had come to Canada in 1807 and in 1809 was ordained preacher. Three years later, in 1812, he was ordained bishop. His "parish included sections of Waterloo, Wilmot and Woolwich" (Uttley 1937: 27). In 1818 a frame addition, which was to be used as a winter school, was built on to the church. The log meeting house was replaced in 1834 by a larger frame church, and the old building was taken to Breslau to become the first meeting house in that community. (The Breslau church was known as Cressman Meeting House, a name which was changed in 1968 to Breslau Mennonite Church.) A Sunday School was opened in the church in 1841.

Benjamin Eby died in 1853. He was followed by Abraham C. Weber who served the congregation until his death in 1874. In that same year, a division in the church brought about the departure of a group who organized a congregation of Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites, to become United Mennonites in 1875 and then Mennonite Brethren in Christ in 1883. Their church is the present-day Bethany Missionary Church on Lancaster Street East. Christian Eby was the next minister of the Berlin Mennonite Church, until 1879. The church was known over the years as Benjamin Eby's Church, Christian Eby's Church (from 1854-1904), and the Berlin Church (from 1904 until 1917.) The name of the church became First Mennonite Church in 1917.

A new brick church was built in 1902. A Bible Study School was begun in 1907, and in 1928 a separate brick Bible Study School building was erected. Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church was formed by some members in 1924 as a result of a division in the church.

Of interest: when the new church was built in 1902, the 1834 frame church was bought by D.B. Betzner who moved it to Cedar Street where it became a woodenware business and then a furniture factory. It was destroyed by fire in 1937.

The Woolner Farmstead buildings, located at 748 Zeller Drive, are situated in the north end of the City of Kitchener on 6.47 acres off scenic Zeller drive. The original Mennonite Georgian farmhouse and outbuildings were constructed in 1830. The farmhouse addition was built circa 1858, and the barn and concrete silo were built circa 1870.

Moses Martin, "was born August 11th, 1832. On March 13th, 1855, he was married to Mary, daughter of John and Catharine (Sherk) Brubacher. She was born August 29th, 1836, and died March 23rd, 1859. After the decease of his first wife, he was married again to Mary Cressman who was born November 1st, 1839. In 1855 Mr. Martin moved to Woolwich Township when it was nearly all wilderness and settled on lot No. 108, German Company's Tract. This he soon cleared and had erected thereon the fine farm buildings now, together with farm, in possession of his youngest son, Moses. Here he died November 26th, 1887. Bishop Abraham Martin, "the second son of John and Anna (Weber) Martin, was born April 27th, 1834, and was raised on the farm he still possesses. On March 17th, 1857, he was married to Elizabeth, the youngest daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Hoffman) Baumann. She was born in Waterloo Township, March 7th, 1838. Soon after their marriage they took possession of his father's farm where they still reside. During the year 1860 it was deemed necessary by the church officials of the Mennonite body to have a minister appointed to assist the aged brethren in the ministry. At the conference held the following spring it was decided that a minister should be appointed to give assistance to the brethren at the Martin, Conestogo, West Woolwich, Elmira, and other fields of labor. On September 1st, 1861, Bishop Joseph Hagey had the chosen parties for the ministry assembled at the Martin Mennonite Meeting House. The lot was cast and it fell on Abraham Martin who was then ordained by the worth Bishop Hagey as a minister of the Mennonite Church. This position he held with honor and credit until September 17th, 1867, when he was ordained bishop at the Christian Eby Meeting House by Bishop Hagey, which position he has held ever since. His preaching is altogether extemporaneous and as a rule has a good effect upon the large audience assembling wheresoever he preaches. He is not a sensational preacher but addresses the judgment of man as well as the feelings, and his sermons abound in arguments and reasonings, listened to with admiration by all who are willing to be spiritually instructed. His personal appearance is in his favor, being of medium height, well proportioned and rather fleshy, a square, even forehead and of a pleasing countenance. His deportment is easy and dignified. Of late he has suffered some from heart disease and rheumatism, so much so that he has been unable to attend to his ministerial duties. Let us all unite in wishing him a speedy recovery and that he may be spared for many years to come to administer to the spiritual wants of his followers. The bishop has a family of ten children"

Martin, Abraham W. (1834-1902)

Abraham Weber Martin: bishop and farmer; b. 27 April 1834 near St. Jacobs in Waterloo County, Ontario to John and Anna (Weber) Martin. He was the second son and third child in a family of three sons and nine daughters. On 17 March 1857 he married Elizabeth Bauman (1838-1902). Soon after their marriage they took possession of the farm on which Abraham was born and they lived there the rest of their lives. Abraham and Anna had three sons and seven daughters. Abraham died 8 February 1902. Elizabeth died 30 April of the same year.

Little is known of Abraham Martin's education, although it was certainly limited to the primary schools of the day. He was said to be of "medium height, well proportioned and rather fleshy," with a "pleasing countenance" and an easy and dignified bearing.

On 1 September 1861 Joseph Hagey ordained Abraham Martin as the minister for the congregations in the Woolwich Township area north of the village of Waterloo. On 17 September 1867 Hagey ordained Martin as the bishop for these congregations-one of three bishops in the Waterloo County Mennonite community.

Abraham Martin can be considered the father of the Old Order Mennonite movement in Ontario. He corresponded frequently with leaders of the earlier conservative movement in the United States, and he took traditional positions on most of the contentious issues. In the 1870s he called a meeting of ministers and deacons at his home to discuss disputed issues within the Mennonite Conference of Ontario. The conservatives indicated that they would drop their objections to protracted evening meetings and English-language preaching only if Sunday schools were not continued in the conference. Their objections to Sunday schools included the following: 1) Sunday schools promoted associations with other churches that were not nonresistant; 2) teaching was often done from books or materials other than the Bible, and 3) Sunday schools usurped the parental role of teaching their children. This effort at reconciliation ceased, and conservative opposition on all these issues continued. Evening meetings and English preaching also encouraged relationships beyond the Mennonite community, and the emerging Old Order group ultimately rejected these innovations as well.

In 1885 preachers Noah Stauffer and Solomon Gehmen held evening meetings in Woolwich Township, the geographic area in which Abraham Martin was bishop. Thirty persons requested baptism because of their experience in the meetings, but Martin refused to give them instruction or to baptize them because of the nature of these meetings. Bishop Elias Weber later baptized the group, but this quickly led to a more formal schism in 1889 when the two factions within the Mennonite Conference of Ontario held separate annual meetings with their ordained leaders.

Despite his conservative theology, Martin was not as rigid as other conservative leaders. In 1885 he decried the "inflexible" discipline of the Stauffer Mennonites in Pennsylvania.

As bishop of the largest group of Old Order Mennonites in Ontario, Abraham Martin had enormous influence on the first years of the group's development. He was not a flamboyant, charismatic leader, but he represented the theological views of a high percentage of those in congregations for which he was responsible.

Martin Meeting House

According to Isaac Horst, "Martins meeting house was the first of the Old Order places of worship to be built. A meeting house is reported to have been built in 1830; burial was begun in the adjoining cemetery in 1831. Martins was aptly named. The first three bishops of the area were Martins, all descended from the pioneer, Peter Martin. The land on which the house stands was formerly owned by Martins (1979: 376)." Peter Martin, Jr. purchased 220 acres of land from his brother, Henry Martin, on May 8, 1824. Apparently he set aside four acres for a meeting house and burying ground at that time. The first burial is reported to have been that of Peter Martin, Sr., who died March 2, 1831. The meeting house was enlarged in 1900.

John Weber was the first minister, followed by Abraham W. Martin, Samuel Weber, Paul Martin, Tobias Martin and Urias Martin. At one time surrounded by countryside, the meeting house and cemetery are now completely encircled by the commercial development brought about by the rapid expansion northward of the city of Waterloo.

MARTIN. - On the 8th of Feb., 1902, at his home four miles north-west of Waterloo, Ont., after a lingering illness, Abraham Martin, aged 67 years, 9 months, 12 days. He was the second son of John and Anna (Weber) Martin and was born on the farm where he lived and died. He was married to Elizabeth Bauman, March 17, 1857. Of their ten children eight are left with their mother to mourn his death. Deceased was ordained to the ministry in the Mennonite church by Bish. Joseph Hagey, at the Martin M. H. in Sept., 1861, and to the office of bishop at the C. Eby M. H., Berlin, in 1867, also by Bish. Hagey. In 1887, owing to some difference of opinion in the Canada conference as to the propriety of holding Sunday schools, evening services etc., he and some other ministers and members withdrew and formed their own conference, now locally known as the conference of the "Martin people," and which have since united in conference work with the ultra conservatives in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania.

CRESSMAN. - At the home of her son near New Hamburg, Ont., Annie (Martin) Cressman, widow of the late Bishop Amos Cressman. She was born on March 12, 1836; died Feb. 8, 1914; aged 77y. 10m. 27d. She leaves to mourn her departure 8 children, 31 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. She had been ill only a few days, but nothing serious. She was taking her dinner and when found by her daughter-in-law life was extinct. Her desire had been that she might go home and her request had been granted. She united with the Mennonite Church in her youth and lived an exemplary Christian life to the end. Funeral Feb. 11 from her son,s residence to Geiger,s Church for services. Buried in adjoining cemetery. Services by Bro. Moses H. Shantz and at the church by Bro. Jonas Snider in German (Text, Heb. 11: 13,14) and Bro. Manasseh Hallman in English (Text, Acts 20: 24). A large concourse of people had gathered to pay the last tribute of respect to the departed one^.

Mrs. Rebecca Gingrich

An esteemed and well known resident of Waterloo township passed away on Thursday, May 7th, in the person of Mrs. Rebecca Gingrich, at the home of her son, Menno M. Gingrich, two miles north of Waterloo, in her 85th. year. Her husband predeceased her three years. There survive two sons and two daughters, Mrs. Daniel Weber, Heidelberg, Mrs. Enoch M. Weber, Elmira, Enos M. Gingrich, Elmira, and Menno M. Gingrich, near Waterloo. One daughter, Mrs. George Martin, predeceased her nine years. The funeral was held Sunday at 9 a.m. from the resident of her son to Martin's Meeting House for service's and adjoining cemetery for interment. Many friends and relations attended the funeral.

On the 20th of March, in Waterloo township, Waterloo Co., MARY, wife of Enoch BAUMAN, aged one day less than 21 years. She was a Sister in the Mennonite Church. She was buried on the 22nd at Christian Eby's burying ground, where Moses Bauman and Jos Hege, by the help of God, preached to a large concourse of people from Matt. 24: 34, 44 and Is. 40: 8. She was not sick any time. In the evening she prepared supper and the next morning she was a corpse

Peter M. Weber was born Nov. 1, 1839, on the old Weber homestead which was then a farm but at the present time the Canadian Goodrich Tire factory is built where the old farmhouse stood. In 1860 he was married to Leah Schmitt who predeceased him some years ago. Two children were born to this union of whom one survives -Geo. S., with whom he had has home. Two children were adopted by them - Mrs. Leah Cressman and Mrs. Abram Wambold. He also leaves 1 brother, 4 sisters, 3 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. Bro. Weber was converted in his youth and joined the Mennonite Church, which faith he kept to the end. He died near Kitchener, June 13, 1925, at the ripe old age of 85 y. 8 m. 13 d. Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, June 16, Bros. Orphen Wismer and Manasseh Hallman conducting the services.

Weber. - Daniel Weber was born in Berlin, Ont., Sept. 11, 1843, and died at his home near German Mills, Ont. Aug. 26, 1920 after a short illness, aged 76 y. 11 m. 15 d. In his youth he was converted and joined the Mennonite Church and had been a member of that body ever since. At the age of 23 he was married to Elizabeth Histand, to which union 4 sons were born 3 of whom survive, who together with 10 grandchildren, also 3 brothers and 4 sisters mourn the loss of a kind parent and brother. His wife predeceased him over 3 years ago. The funeral was held on Aug. 29 at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, with Bro. U. K. Weber speaking in English and Bro. Jonas Snider in German. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Weber.-Levi Weber was born Mar. 14, 1850, on a farm where part of the city of Kitchener, Ont., now stands; died Oct. 24, 1923, at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital after about two days' illness with pneumonia; aged 73 y. 7 m. 10 d. He was married to Susannah Bowman who died a little over three years ago. Eleven children were born to this union of whom seven survive (Mrs. Moses Schmitt, Jeremiah, Abram, Burton, Mrs. Harvey Bricker, Mrs. Joseph Cressman, Mrs. S. S. Shantz). There are also a number of grandchildren, besides two brothers and four sisters to mourn his departure. He united with the Mennonite Church in his young years, lived a consistent life to the end, and also had the satisfaction of seeing all his children accept their Saviour. Funeral services Oct. 28 from the home of his son-in-law, Bro. Joseph Cressman, to the First Mennonite Church for services which were conducted by the brethren, U. K. Weber and Abram Gingrich.

After her death he was married to Rebecca, daughter of Abraham B. and Lydia (Shantz) Clemmer. The second marriage was blessed with a family of seven children, namely: VII Lydia Ann, VII Abraham, VII Elmina, VII Elam (dead), VII Adline, VII Menno (dead), and VII Elvin. After the decease of second wife which took place April 25th, 1885, he was married to Annie, daughter of Joseph and Magdalena (Martin) Kinzie. She was widow of Jonathan B. Snyder. There are no children of first and third marriages. Mr Weber resided on a beautiful farm being composed of part of lot No. 117, German Company's Tract, where he died of typhoid fever. His widow has her home with Christian B. Snyder three miles north of the town of Waterloo."

Shirk. - Mrs. Judith Shirk passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Shantz, at Pine Hill, Ont., April 9, 1942; aged 86 y. 9 m. 5 d. The deceased was a daughter of the late Abraham Weber and Judith Martin and was the last surviving member of a family of 16 children. She was born in Freeport, Ont., on July 4, 1855. She was united in marriage to Charles Krempien and resided near Centreville, Ont., until his death 48 years ago. In November 1896, she was again united in marriage, this time to Peter Shirk of Bridgeport, Ont., who predeceased her on Oct. 1, 1919. She was a lifelong adherent and member of the Mennonite Church, in which faith she passed away. She leaves to mourn her loss 1 son, Norman Krempien of Acadia Valley, Alta.; also 2 daughters, Mrs. Walter Snider of Bridgeport and Mrs. Walter Shantz of Pine Hill. One stepson, Noah Shirk of Bridgeport, and 7 stepdaughters -- Mrs. William Kraft, Bridgeport; Mrs. Gideon Bechtel, Baden; Mrs. Catherine Shantz, Kitchener; Mrs. Isaiah Cressman, Kitchener; Mrs. Addison D. Snyder, Bloomingdale; Mrs. Addison S. Snider, Bridgeport; and Mrs. Benjamin Drudge of Bridgeport, also survive. One daughter, Mrs. Charles Himburg of Edmonton, Alta., predeceased her two years ago. The funeral was held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Shantz, with services conducted by Bro. Moses N. Baer, and at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont., where the service was conducted by Bishop Manasseh Hallman. Interment in adjoining cemetery. Texts, Prov. 16: 31; Ps. 107: 30.

A few weeks before his death he began to get worse and gradually sank until death relieved him. His last days were happy days, praising God and anxiously waiting to depart. He leaves a widow, two sons and six daughters. What is their loss is his gain. Funeral services at Didsbury, Alta., by Pre. Israel R. Schantz and Pre. Finklebein. Interment at Didsbury cemetery. Weber. - Bro. Tilman M. Weber of Bridgeport, Ont., passed away suddenly, Nov. 6, 1940 as a result of a heart attack; aged 77 y. 1 m. 4 d. He was the son of the late Abraham C. and Judith (Martin) Weber. He was born on Nov. 2, 1863 on the Weber homestead at Freeport, Ont., the farm on which the Freeport Sanitarium is now located. He leaves 2 sons (Amos of Bridgeport, and Urias of Hawkeville), also 2 sisters (Mrs. Menno Horst of St. Jacobs and Mrs. Judith Shirk of Bridgeport). He was predeceased by his wife (the late Magdelena Sitler) 49 years ago, also 1 daughter (Marian) in 1929. He was a faithful and lifelong member of the Mennonite Church. He will long be remembered for his quiet, gracious Christian demeanor. His was an example of true Christian relationships with others in Church, city, and community. Services and interment at First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont., Bro. C. F. Derstine in charge. Theme: "A Hoary Head a Crown of Glory."

After a lengthy illness, Lydia M. Mrs. Abram Weber, died at the home of her brother Tilman M. Weber, at 10: 30 o'clock Saturday morning. Deceased who was in her 68^th year, suffered three strokes. Surviving are one brother, Tilman Weber, Bridgeport, and three sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Horst, St. Jacobs, Mrs. Peter Shirk, Bridgeport, and Mrs. Mary Weber, Bridgeport.

Mrs. Nathan Clemmer - Following a long illness Mrs. Nathan Clemmer passed away Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. David Bowman near Waterloo in her 68th year. Surviving are her husband; five sons, Manasseh and Onias of Peel township, Jonas and Nathan of Waterloo, and Abe of Kitchener; two daughters, Mrs. Allan Buehler of Preston and Mrs. David Bowman who resides on the old homestead, near Waterloo. Mrs. Israel Weber, of RR 1, St. Jacobs died Tuesday at the home of her son, Israel, after a lengthy illness. She was 92. Born in Woolwich Township, May 25, 1876, she was a daughter of the late Bishop Abraham and Mrs. Martin and had always lived in the township. Her husband predeceased her Aug. 7, 1952. Surviving are five sons, Henry and Josiah, both of RR 2, Waterloo, Mannasse, RR 1, Wallenstein; Israel, RR 1, St. Jacobs, and Amos of RR 1 Elmira; one daughter, Mrs. Tilman (Susanna) Frey of St. Jacobs, 26 grandchildren and 74 great-grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her family having been predeceased by three brothers and six sisters. The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until Thursday noon when removal was made to the home of her son Israel of RR II, St. Jacobs. A service was conducted at the home on Friday at 8: 30 a.m. and then to Conestogo Mennonite Meeting House for further service. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

Miss Mary Cressman

A lifelong and highly esteemed resident of this community passed away last Saturday evening in the person of Miss Barbara [should read Mary] Cressman at the age of 75 years, 8 months and 29 days. She had been ill for the past year and was confined to bed since last October.

The deceased was a daughter of the late Bishop and Mrs. Amos Cressman, being born on the homestead on the Southern outskirts of the village, now owned by her nephew, Joseph Cressman, and where she practically spent her whole life. The late Miss Cressman was a devoted member of Geiger's Mennonite Church and leaves a host of friends who regret her passing.

Three brothers and two sisters survive, Moses, Enos and Noah Grossman, all of Wilmot, Mrs. Eli Good, Bleam's Road, and Mrs. Christian Fretz, of Vineland. Two sisters predeceased her some years ago and one brother, Osias, with whom she made her home, died on April 2nd last.

The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon with services in Geiger's Church, followed by interment In the adjoining cemetery. A large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends attended to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed.

Cressman - Moses M., son the late Bishop Amos Cressman, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., March 19, 1859; after a brief illness he passed away at his home May 12, 1938, in his eightieth year. Nov. 29, 1881, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth, daughter of the late Joseph Y. Shantz with whom he lived in matrimony 56 years. At the age of 20 he accepted Christ and united with the Mennonite Church of which he remained a faithful member until death called him. In 1889 he was ordained to the office of deacon in Bean's congregation in which capacity he faithfully served. Surviving are his companion, 2 sons (Ivan of Wilmot, Addi on the homestead), 1 daughter (Effie, wife of Zenus Snider of Wilmot), 11 grandchildren, 1 brother, 2 sisters, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held May 14 from his home to the Bean's Mennonite Church. Officiating ministers were Brethren M.H. Roth, C.C. Cressman and M. Hallman. The body was laid the rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Good - Nancy, daughter of the late Bishop Amos and Anna Cressman, was born near New Hamburg, Ont., Feb. 23, 1862; died at her home near New Hamburg March 13, 1943; aged 81 y. 18 d. Oct. 9, 1883, she was united in marriage to Eli Good, who served as deacon of the Geiger congregation for 30 yrs. and was called to his reward Feb. 11, 1934. This union was blessed with 6 daughters and 7 sons, 5 of whom died in childhood and one daughter (Malinda, Mrs. Simon Brubacher) in July, 1933. Three grandchildren also preceded her. Surviving are 4 sons and 3 daughters (Amos, Jonas, and Moses near New Hamburg; Joseph and Elizabeth (Baer) of Plattsville; Mrs. Angus Eby of Drake, Sask.; Mrs. Angus Gingrich of Wilmot), 33 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 1 brother (Noah of Wilmot), 1 sister (Mrs. Chriss Fretz, of Vineland). Sister Good accepted Christ as her Saviour in her youth and was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church til death. She was a kind and devoted mother whose services cannot be estimated by earthly measures. Funeral services were held March 16 from the home to the Geiger Mennonite Church, in charge of bishops M.H. Roth and M. Hallman. The body was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.

Enos M., son of Bishop Amos and Ann (Martin) Cressman, was born Sept. 17, 1864; died Aug. 27, 1935; aged 70 y. 11 m. 10 d. On Feb. 1, 1887, he was united in marriage to Lovina Hallman who predeceased him Feb. 1, 1931. The Lord blessed their union with 9 children. One daughter (Clara) died in infancy. There remain 4 sons (Jacob of Petersburg, Manasseh of Strasburg, Edmund and Abner of the home community) and 4 daughters (Mrs Manasseh Shantz and Mrs. Eldon Hunsberger of Baden, Mrs. Aaron Bowman of New Hamburg and Mrs. Orphan Weber of Vineland), besides 41 grandchildren, 2 brothers (Moses and Noah) and 2 sisters (Mrs. Eli Good and Mrs. Chris Fretz). Bro Cressman had been a lifelong resident of the community around New Hamburg, Ont., and his passing removes from among us one who was widely known and respected. In his early twenties he accepted his Lord and united with the Mennonite Church, in which fellowship he lived until the Lord called him. Until about a year ago he enjoyed good health, having a strong constitution. During the last year of his life he endured periods of intense suffering through a complication of disorders and often expressed a desire to go to his reward. Although our brother keenly felt his own shortcomings, he assuringly [sic] pillowed his head in God's promises of a full and free salvation. Funeral services were held Aug. 30 at the home and at the Beihn Church. Burial in the adjoining cemetery. Brethren Moses Roth and Curtis C. Cressman had charge of the services.

Death of Enos Cressman.

Enos Cressman, well-known and highly successful farmer of this district, died on Tuesday morning at his home here following a lingering illness He was in his 71st year.

He is survived by eight children. His wife, Lavina Hallman, predeceased him four years ago.

The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon from his late residence at 2 p.m. to Bean's Mennonite Church for services, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Death of Mr. Osias Cressman

A well-known and highly esteemed resident of this community passed away at the Kitchener-Waterloo hospital early on Monday morning in the person of Osias Cressman at the age of 66 years. Mr. Cressman had been ill with stomach trouble and submitted to an operation at the hospital last Wednesday. Other complications set in which caused his unexpected demise. The deceased was a son of the late Bishop and Mrs. Amos Cressman, and was born on the homestead on the southern outskirts of this village where he spent his whole earthly career. He was a devout adherent of the Mennonite faith and for many years, and up to his death, was a preacher at Geiger's Church on Bleams road. He leaves in deep bereavement his widow and a family of two daughters and four sons, namely, Elmina at home Mrs. S. Shantz, Haysville, Joseph on the homestead, Amos, of East Zorra, Omar of Wilmot and Simeon in Waterloo. He is also survived by three brothers and three sisters, Moses, Noah and Menno Cressman, Mrs. Good of Wilmot, Mrs. Fretz of Vineland and Miss Mary Cressman on the homestead. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon to Geigers' Church and cemetery. .A large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends from near and far, assembled to attend the funeral service, which .was conducted by Bishop Manassah Hallman.

Cressman, Noah M., son of Amos and Anna (Martin) Cressman, passed to this reward Oct. 2, 1954, after a lingering illness; in his 85th year. He became a Christian in early maturity and served his Lord the rest of his days as a member of the Biehn congregation, New Hamburg, Ont. Surviving are 3 sons (Melvin ,Merriton, Ont.; Zenas and Elam, New Hamburg, Ont.). On Oct. 5 he was laid to rest in the Biehn Cemetery after services at the Biehn Church in charge of M. H. Roth and C. C. Cressman.

Noah M. Cressman By Record Correspondent

SOUTHWEST WILMOT-Noah M. Cressman, 84, died at his home, RR 1. New Hamburg, today. A native of Wilmot township, he was son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Amos Cressman. He had lived on the farm where he died for over 50 years. Mr. Cressman was a member of Biehn Mennonite Church and of SS No. 4 school board. His wife, the former Mary Anne Snyder, died in 1934.

Surviving are three sons, Elam on the home farm; Zenas, RR 1, New Hamburg, and Melvin, St. Catharines; one sister, Mrs. Christian Fretz. Vineland; 16 grandchildren and six great-grand- children. One son, Lloyd, predeceased him in 1942 and also one son in infancy.

The body will be at the Futher- Omand Funeral Home, New Hamburg, until 11 a.m. Sunday when removal will be made to the residence where a short service will be held Tuesday followed by memorial service in. Biehn Mennonite Church at 2:30 p.m. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. Curtis Cressman will be in charge of the service.

Cressman - Ezra, son of Menno and Lydia (Martin) Cressman, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Nov. 13, 1860; died very suddenly April 29, 1938; aged 77 y. 5 m. 16 d. On March 23, 1886 he was united in marriage to Louisa Shantz who survives him. This union was blessed with 3 sons, 2 having preceded him, namely, Leander and Howard. There survive him besides his companion, 1 son (Curtiss), on the homestead; also 12 grandchildren, 1 brother, and 2 sisters. As a young man he accepted Christ as his Saviour and united with the Mennonite Church, being a member of the Bean congregation. He was faithful to the end. He was loved and respected, always ready with his counsel. He will be missed in the home, in the Church, and in the community. Funeral services May 1, at the home by Bro. Moses H. Roth and at the Bean church by Moses H. Shantz, assisted by M. Hallman. Text, Psa. 90: 12. Burial in adjoining cemetery.

The funeral of the late Jonathan Cressman, who died at Trout Brook, N. Y., was to have taken place from his father's residence on Sunday afternoon at two o'clock, but owing to the train being blocked by the snow storm on Friday his father, Mr. Menno Cressman, did not arrive at Paris station until half past three on Sunday morning and had to hire a livery to drive to Wilmot, so that the funeral did not take place until Monday morning at Geiger's churchyard near Wilmot Centre. We sympathize with the relations of the young man who has been taken off in his prime far away from home and friends.

Cressman. --- Urias, youngest son of the late Menno and Lydia (Martin) Cressman, was born May 31, 1867; died March 11, 1940, in his 73rd year. In 1898, he was united in marriage to Melinda Martin, who predeceased him Dec. 25, 1922. This union was blessed with 3 children (Harvey, at home; Eden, of St. Jacobs; and Sylvia, who died in infancy). There also remain 3 grandchildren and 2 sisters (Mrs. James Moyer of Vineland, Ont.; and Mrs. Moses M. Brubacher of St. Jacobs, Ont.). He was born and resided continuously on the old homestead in Southwest Wilmot, Ont., his late home. Death came very suddenly. He was feeling slightly ill when he retired but was not considered serious. About midnight he seemed quite well, but before morning the spirit took its flight. As a young man he accepted Christ as his Saviour and united with the Mennonite Church, in which faith he died. Funeral services were held on March 13 at the home and at Bean's Mennonite Church by the Brethren Manasseh Hallman and Moses H. Roth. Text, Amos 4: 12-"Prepare to meet thy God." Burial in adjoining cemetery.

Rosenberger, Nancy, daughter of Menno and Lydia (Martin) Cressman, was born June 17, 1871, in Wilmot Twp., Waterloo Co., Ont.; died of coronary occlusion Jan. 3, 1960, at Preston, Ont.; Aged 88 y. 6 m. 17 d. On May 23, 1893, she was married to James Moyer, who died in 1942. In August, 1945, she was married to Isaiah Rosenberger, who died in 1949. Surviving are 3 children (Ida--Mrs. Leslie Graham, Vineland; Reta--Mrs. William Cornelius, Beamsville; and Menno C. Moyer, Blair), 12 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and one half sister (Mrs. Elizabeth Brubacher). She was a member of the First Mennonite Church, Vineland, where funeral services were held on Jan. 6, in charge of Wayne North.

BADEN. July 21—Mrs. Gideon Bechtel passed away at her home early this morning after a brief illness. Mrs. Bechtel was born at Bridgeport 71 years ago, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Shirk. She was member of the Wilmot Centre Evangelical Church. Surviving are her husband, Gideon Bechtel, three sons, Orton and Peter, Kitchener: Laroyd, Bridgeport; two daughters, Mrs. Harry Ashcroft, Owen Sound, Miss Edna Bechtel, R.N., Freeport, one brother, Noah Shirk, Bridgeport; seven sisters, Mrs. William Kraft, Bridgeport, Mrs. Catherine Shantz, Kitchener, Mrs. Addison S. Snider, Bridgeport, Mrs. Addison D. Snider, Bloomingdale, Mrs. Walter Shantz, Baden, Mrs. Benjamin Drudge, Bridgeport, Mrs. Magdalene Cressman, Kitchener. The remains are resting at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 9 a.m. Thursday, when removal will be made to the residence in Baden. Mrs. Catherine Shantz, 79, of Kitchener died at Elmira Private Hospital Monday. Born in Bridgeport, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Shirk. She was a member of Stirling Ave. Mennonite Church and of the Missionary Society. Surviving are three sons, Mervin of Alma, Edward of Kitchener and Frank of Kitchener; three daughters. Mrs. Marshall (Erma) Bingeman, Mrs. Maxwell (Florence) Becker and Mrs. Ewan (Anna) Cameron, all of Kitchener; one brother, Noah Shirk of Bridgeport: four sisters, Mrs. Addison D. Snyder of Bloomingdale, Mrs. Addison S. Snider, Mrs. Ben Drudge and Mrs. Walter Shantz, all of Bridgeport. Her husband, Allan B. Shantz, predeceasedher in 1931. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, until Friday noon, when removal will be made to Stirling Ave. Mennonite Church for the funeral at 2: 30 p.m., Rev. Wilfred Ulrich, assisted by Rev. U. K. BLOOMINGDALE, Mrs. Addison D. Snyder, 72, died suddenly, Wednesday, at her home. Born June 10, 1881, in Bridgeport, she was Maria Shirk, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Shirk. She was a member of the Snyder Mennonite Church, Bloomingdale. On June 1, 1904, she was married to Mr. Snyder in Waterloo. Surviving are a son, John W. S., of Bloomingdale; one brother, Noah Shirk of Bridgeport; one step-brother, Norman Krampien of Waterloo; one step-sister, Mrs. Walter Snider of Bridgeport; three sisters, Mrs. Addison S. Snider and Mrs. Benjamin Drudge of Bridgeport and Mrs. Walter Shantz of Baden. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel funeral home, Kitchener, until Friday, at 10 a.m., whenremoval will be made to the residence. Mrs. Isaac G. Martin, 65, died Tuesday night, April 26, after a lengthy illness at her home here, 32 Church street.

She was born in Woolwich Township, March 4, 1884.

Surviving, besides her husband, are three sons, Henry, Kitchener: Jacob. Ottawa; David, Heidelberg: two brothers, Osiah B. Martin, R.R. No. 1, Elmira; Cyrus B. Martin, R.R. 2, Elmira; one sister, Miss Susannah Martin, RR. 1, Waterloo.

The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor until 9:30 a.m. last Thursday.

The funeral was held Friday, at 2 p.m. A private service was conducted at the residence and public ser- vice in Elmira Mennonite Church. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery.

Mr. Ira Martin, Heidelberg, Succumbs While Attending Church Here

Mr. Ira Martin, aged 42, Heidelberg Road, died suddenly while attending the Sunday morning service in the Elmira Mennonite church. He had not been feeling well of late, being troubled with his heart and also with asthma. Just before entering the church for the service he is said to have stated to a group of friends with whom he was talking that he did not feel well that morning. When he appeared faint he was carried out of the church and passed away soon after outside. Surviving are his wife, five children: Isaiah, Elvina, Lucinda, Isaac, and Samuel, at home; his mother, two sisters, Mrs. Isaac Martin, Elmira; Susanna, at home and three brothers: Oziah Martin, Elmira; Anos, on the homestead, and Cyrus, of the Jerusalem section. Mr. Martin was born in the Heidelberg district and lived there all his life. The funeral was held on Wednesday morning. Interment was made in Martin's Cemetery, south of St. Jacobs.

WALLENSTEIN - Enoch Horst, 73, former Millbank farmer, died today at his home in Wallenstein. Born in Woolwich township, he had come to Wallenstein only about two months ago. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Eli Horst. His wife, the former Eliza Martin died 35 years ago.

Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Aaron (Levina) Lichty. Crosshill and Anna, Lydia Ann and Louise at home; five sons, Elam of Millbank; Enoch of Linwood; Isaiah and Elias at home and Henry of Newton; one brother, Eli of Alma; one sister, Sarah Horst of near Waterloo.
