Emmanuel Hamacher

A lifelong resident of Wilmot Township passed away on Thursday, June 29th, in the person of Mr. Emmanuel Hamacher at the age of 83 years. The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Hamacher, early pioneers and was born on the homestead at Wilmot Centre where he spent the whole of his long life. He had been ill only a short time.

The deceased was married to Lavina Hostetler, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Moses Hostetler on May 8th, 1888. His widow, two sons, Roy and Wilfred, both of Wilmot Centre and two daughters, Mrs. R. Meisel of Preston, and Miss Vera Hamacher at home are left to mourn his demise. He is also survived by one brother, Gideon, of near Haysville, and three sisters, Mrs. Amanda Toman of New Dundee, Mrs. Jack Bolton of Dundas and Mrs. Lavina Lennis of Millcreek, Indiana, besides five grandchildren.

The funeral was held on Sunday will service in the Evangelical Church at Wilmot Centre, of which the deceased had been a lifelong adherent. Internment took place in the adjoining cemetery. Rev. N. H. Dahms, the pastor conducted the funeral service and a large assemblage of relative and friends attended.

Whitehorse Photographer- Ephraim Hamacher

Hamacher was born in Wilmot Township in 1857. In the summer of 1900, he arrived in Whitehorse following in the footsteps of the Gold Rush photographer, E.A. Hegg. Hamacher never left the Yukon and his photographs have become priceless treasures from a by-gone era. He will always be known as the "Whitehorse Photographer."

In October 1906, the Whitehorse Star reported that: "Photographer E.J. Hamacher returned Sunday evening on the steamer White Horse from a professional trip along the river. He obtained some excellent views of the wreck of the steamer Columbian."

We are in receipt of a letter from Mr. E. J. Hamacher of White Horse, Yukon, in which he states that he is now on his way to Agua Caliente, Arizona, where he intends to spend the winter, returning to the Yukon again in the spring. Mr. Hamacher has been a subscriber to the Independent for many years and enjoys reading the news from the old town. He will be remembered by many of the older people in town having conducted ia photo studio here in the eighties. He has been in the Yukon for many years.

In a letter received from Mr. E. J. Hamacher from Agua Caliente, Arizona, he informs us that he is leaving again for his home in White Horse, Yukon Territory. He spent the past few winters in Arizona and writes us that there they have summer all the year around with temperature at 95 on the day of leaving and butterflies fluttering around. He states that the past winter was the pleasantest weather he ever experienced. Mr. Hamacher wishes to be remembered to all his old New Hamburg friends.

Died in Yukon.

Word has been received by relatives here of the death of Mr. E. J. Hamacher, of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, which occurred on October 29th. The deceased was a son of the late Jacob Hamacher and was born in Wilmot Township 78 years ago. He learned the photograph art with Peter
Reichert in New Hamburg and left for the Coast States about fifty years ago. A few years after the 1898 gold rush to the Yukon he went north and had since been located at Whitehorse where he carried on a photograph business and general store for years and for some years also conducted a ferry line across Whitehorse Lake. For several years the late Mr. Hamacher came South and spent the winter at Agua Caliente, Arizona. During all the years since he left here the deceased was a constant subscriber to the Independent. Gideon Hamacher Died in His 94th year.

Gideon Hamacher of RR 2, Petersburg, one of the oldest native Wilmot Township residents, died on Monday at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital in his 94th year, following a short illness. He was born March 5th, 1864, in Wilmot Centre, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Hamacher, and lived nearly all his life in Wilmot township. Before his retirement he carried on a lumber business. His wife, the former, Louisa Pfohl predeceased him five years ago. Surviving are three sons, Gordon. of New Dundee; Russell, of Windsor; and Clifford, Petersburg; three daughters, Mrs. Emery, (Alrneta) Strome, Waterloo; Mrs. Willard (Ruby) Haas, Petersburg; and Mrs. Roy (Myrtle) Diefenbaker, of Elmira. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. One son, Quinn, and a daughter, Verge, predeceased him. The funeral was held on Wednesday with service at the Ratz-Bechtel funeral home, Kitchener, and burial in Union Cemetery, New Dundee. Rev. Glenn Strome, a grandson of Mr. Hamacher, conducted the funeral service.

According to an article in the 1984 newspaper, The Advertiser, this red brick house was built by Gideon Hamacher in 1910, and was uniquely built with winding stair cases, up to three layers of brick, exterior verandas and lots of bay windows. This is a Victorian-style house, with a white roof and trim.
The Red Lion Tavern was formerly located on this site, but it burned down in the early 1900's, and the house was built on this site. Former owners of the land include James Hope and Austin Bricker, who was the roads superintendent for the Township of North Dumfries in 1939.

There passed away at his home near Petersburg on Thursday, Feb. 6th, Mr. John Hamacher, after several years illness with cancer. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon from his late home to the

He was a faithful lifetime member of Wilmot Centre Missionary Church. Wilfrid was a son of the late Emmanuel Hamacher and the former Lovina Hostettler.

He is lovingly remembered by a sister-in-law, Ruth (Mrs. Roy Hamacher) of New Hamburg; one nephew, Richard Hamacher of Kitchener and three nieces, Doris Shadbolt of Burnaby, B.C., Grace Wilke of Kitchener, Ruth Meyer of Cambridge. Wilfrid was predeceased by one brother, Roy and two sisters, Annie (Mrs. Rufus Meisel) and Vera Hamacher.

Friends and relatives may call at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg, on Friday from 7-9 p.m. On Saturday, transfer will be made to Wilmot Centre Missionary Church for visitation from 12 noon until the time of service at 2 p.m. with Pastor Don Mills officiating. Beloved wife of Harry Hostetler who predeceased her in 1950. Mrs. George A. Guthrie Passes At Greenfield

The death occurred on Tuesday night at the home of her son, James W. Guthrie, Greenfield, of Mrs. George A. Guthrie, in her 60th year. She had been ill for a lengthy period.

Mrs. Guthrie was born near New Dundee, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Toman. Her maiden name was Alberta Toman. She was a member of Knox United Church, Ayr, and was highly esteemed by a host of friends.

Surviving are three sons, William and Hugh, Blenheim township, and James W., Greenfield. Her husband predeceased her six years ago. Also surviving are three brothers and five sisters, as follows: Ira H. Elgin Toman passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, July 23, 1994 at K-W Hospital, Kitchener. He was in his 81st year. Beloved brother of Ludena Sararas of Nithview Home, New Hamburg, Wallace Toman of Kitchener and Grace Holm of Roseville. Born in New Dundee, he was a son of the late Ira Toman and Ethel Kriesel. Predeceased by brothers Ralph, Ross and Pte. Burkle Toman who was killed in action overseas, and sister Rudene Bowman. Survived by a dear friend Brenda Wagler of New Hamburg, brother-in-law Howard Bowman , as well as several nieces and nephews. Elgin was employed at Clefthaven Farms for 35 years, and over so many years became good friends of Orville and Ruth Fried and families. Elgin continued to enjoy horseshoe pitching achieving the honour of becoming Canadian Horseshoe Pitching Champion. While a longtime resident of Nithview Home, New Hamburg, Elgin enjoyed many hours persuing his favourite sport of shooting pool. He was a member of St. James' Lutheran Church, New Dundee. The family received friends at the Westmount Funeral Chapel, Kitchener, where funeral services were held in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, July 26th. Rev. Gerald Schwartzentruber and Rev. James W. Guthrie - James Wade Guthrie of Greenfield passed away at his home on Thursday, May 3rd. He was in his 75th year. Born in Blenheim Township, near New Dundee, he was a son of the late George A. Guthrie and Alberta Toman. In 1925, at the age of seven, he moved with his parents to the farm at Greenfield purchased from the Goldie family. He resided and farmed there the rest of his life. Mr. Guthrie was a member of Knox United Church, Ayr. Surviving are his wife, the former Doretha (Dee) Sherwood; three sons John of Kitchener, Robert of Edmonton and David of Woodstock; a daughter Mrs. Lyle (Myrna) MacCharles of Kingston; also four grandchildren. Predeceased by brothers Hugh and Will and sisters Estelle and Barbara. Rested at the Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, Paris, where funeral service was conducted by Rev. George Saunders of Knox United Church, Ayr. Cremation. Interment Ayr Cemetery.

Douglas Earl Mitchell, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. David Mitchell, R. R. No. 4, Bright, passed away Monday morning at the home of his parents. He was in his 12th year and had been ill only one week. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Mitchell, and three brothers, George, William and Robert. The funeral will take place from the family residence this (Wednesday) afternoon at 2.30 o'clock. Interment will be in Ayr Cemetery.

NEW DUNDEE.\emdash Douglas Earl Mitchell, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. David Mitchell, passed away at the home of his parents, south of here on Monday morning after an illness of one week. The deceased was born on Feb. 4th, 1930 and was in his 12th year. Surviving are: his parents, and three brothers, George, Billy and Bob. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon from the family residence to the Ayr cemetery for interrment |

George Mitchell - Lifelong, RR 3, Ayr resident, George Lewis Mitchell died suddenly at his home on Friday, October 22, 2004. He was in his 73rd year. Born at the family farm where he farmed his whole life, George was the son of Wayne (Toman) and David Brown Mitchell. He was a long standing member of the Ayr Curling Club, Knox United Church, Ayr and a member of the Hayseeds/ Tartans Band. George competed in local and international plowing matches for fifty years, and was a former Director and Past President of the North Dumfries Plowing Match. George was also an avid deer and moose hunter. Surviving is his wife Shirley Douglas; his three daughters Brenda Mitchell of Paris, Pat and her husband John Elliott of Ayr, and Carol and her husband Mark Monaghan of Bermuda; his seven grandchildren Lindsay, Jesse, Tayler, Turner, Dawson, Jack and Sydney; his brother William Mitchell and his wife Dorothy of Ayr; his sisters-in-law Janis Mitchell of RR 4, Bright and Marilyn and her husband Bill Scott of RR 2, Drumbo; and his several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, George was also predeceased by two brothers Douglas and Robert Mitchell. Reverend Fred Hagle of Knox United Church, Ayr conducted funeral services at the Ayr Chapel, Wm. Kipp Funeral Home on Monday, October 25. Interment was in Ayr Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bruce Mitchell, Brad Mitchell, Ron Cochrane, Brett Butcher, George Ronald and David Dance.

Robert T. Mitchell

Robert Toman Mitchell passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on August 1st, 1998. Born on November 4th, 1937, he was in his 61st year. Bob was born and lived his entire life on the Mitchell home farm at RR 4, Bright. He was predeceased by his parents Wayne (Toman) and David Mitchell. Bob enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, curling and horseshoes. His greatest love was his family and his special gift of music. He will be greatly missed by his wife and best friend Janis (Lehman) who he married on October 5th, 1957; his children Kim and her husband Dan Michiels of RR 3, Bright, Brad of RR 4, Bright, Robin and her husband Mike Ward of RR 1, Ayr, Trisha and her husband Mark Robb of RR 1, Drumbo and Sandra and her husband Brad Lennox of Keg Lane, Paris; his grandchildren Danielle and Kristin Michiels, Ashley and Russell Mitchell, Bethany and Justin Ward, Mitchell and Miranda Robb, Carter, Baylee and Rylee Lennox; and his brothers George and his wife Shirley and Bill and his wife Dorothy, all of Ayr. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his brother Douglas. Private family funeral service was held at the Ayr Chapel, Wm. Kipp Funeral Home. Interment was in Ayr Cemetery.
