Dynamite Fumes Kill Brothers At Well Bottom

Fumes from a dynamite blast set off during the morning took the lives of Enos and Israel M. Weber on Tuesday afternoon when they descended to work at the bottom of a 21-foot well on a cottage property at the Three Bridges.

Dr. Le Roy Wagner of Elmira, coroner who was called to the scene of the tragedy, said Wednesday morning that blood tests showed that....... poisoning.

The men, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Israel G. Weber of R.R. 2, Waterloo. were staying at the home of a brother. Amzy, while digging a well for a nearby summer cottage. They had set off a charge of dynamite during the morning and returned to the job about 1:00 p.m.

When they failed to show up for supper at 6:00 p.m.. a hired girl was sent to ask them to return. She discovered the bodies at the bottom of the well

Dr. Wagner said he was told the men had tried to clear the shaft of fumes by using an umbrella as an air scoop. The brother, Amzy had gone down to the bottom but had not stayed there long enough to be affected by the deadly gas.

Dr. Wagner pointed out that monoxide is invisible, odorless and tasteless and that great care must be taken whenever its presence is suspected.
