WEBER. - On Aug. 17, 1899, about one mile north of Waterloo, Waterloo Co., Ontario, Sister Mary Ann, beloved wife of Joseph S. Weber, and oldest daughter of Henry B. Shantz. Her age was 34 years, 8 months and 5 days. She died at the "Berlin-Waterloo Hospital" from the effects of an internal rupture. Signs of her departure manifested itself shortly before she died, time, however, being permitted for her children to come and give her good-bye. By her request her brother was also summoned from his occupation to meet her once more and she pointed him earnestly to Christ for the hope of a glorious hereafter. She arranged for the ministers to preach at her funeral, and gave instruction to warn the people of pride and vanity. She will be greatly missed by her nine children and loving husband, besides the Mennonite Church and neighborhood, where she was a willing helper. Funeral at Martin's M. H. was largely attended, the house being filled; the school house opposite the road also being filled. Service at the church by Bro. Jonas Snyder, (text, Luke 10: 42), and Bro. E. S. Hallman, Text, Phil. 1: 23. The service at the school house was held by the brethren, Samuel S. Bowman and Jacob Woolner, Jr.

Death was due to Bulbar Paralysis with which she was afflicted for a year or more. It affected her neck and throat to the extent that she could not speak, eat nor drink the last while. She made her wants known by writing. She accepted Christ as her Savior and united with the Mennonite Church in her youth, living a devoted, consistent life, and bore her suffering very patiently, looking forward to the time when she would be relieved from all distress, where sorrow and pain will not be known. She often expressed a desire to depart and be with Christ which was for her far better. Funeral services were held on Aug. 19, at the Waterloo Mennonite Church by the brethren, Oscar Burkholder, Jonas Snider, and Noah Hunsberger. She leaves to mourn her departure, a beloved husband, twelve children, two sisters, five brothers, and twenty-three grandchildren. May God bless and sustain them in their bereavement.

Reesor -- Lydia Ann Weber was born at Waterloo, Ont., May 11, 1891; died Dec. 29, 1938, at Markham, Ont.; aged 47 y. 7 m. 18 d. Sister Reesor was a daughter of Joseph S. and the late Mary Ann (Shantz) Weber of Waterloo. In 1905 during a revival held by Bro. A. D. Wenger, she confessed the Lord as her Saviour and the same year was baptized and became a member of the Mennonite Church at Waterloo. On Dec. 20, 1916, she was married to Bro. Joseph B. Reesor of Markham. To this union 9 children were born (Mary, Lewis, Martha, Annie, Eva, David, John, Esther, and Ruth). Seven of these have confessed Jesus as their Saviour and are members of the church. She also leaves an aged father (living in Saskatchewan), 7 brothers (Allan, Joseph, and Byron of Waterloo; Lewis S., missionary to Argentina, S. A.; Newton of Ft. Wayne, Ind., mission; Orphen of Baden, Orval of London), and 3 sisters Mrs. A. R. Burkholder of Markham, Mrs. Herbert Snyder of Waterloo, Mrs. Leonard Snyder, Waterloo, Mrs. Delton Schmitt of Waterloo). One sister (Mrs. Nelson Martin) died a number of years ago while they had charge of Toronto Mission. There also remains a sorrowing mother-in-law (Mrs. Tillman Reesor of Markham), who feels very keenly the loss of a loving daughter who kindly cared for her. The church at Markham, also the surrounding community, is grieved because of the loss of a Christian mother who was so much needed in the home, but we humbly yield as she also did before her passing and say with her, "The Lord's will be done." She had not been in good health for some time, and less than a week before her passing developed a slight attack of pneumonia. Having a weak heart, the two conditions proved too much for her and she triumphantly passed away. The same day she requested her family to sing for her at the bedside. She helped to sing the chorus of the Sweet Bye and Bye." The one comforting thought of the sorrowing husband, family, church circle, and the community is the knowledge that a loving mother has entered the courts above to be with her Lord. Funeral services were held Jan.1 at the home by Bro. A. D. Grove, Bro. Cockburn of the Congregational Church and Bro. Oscar Burkholder of Breslau who preached the sermon. Text, Jno. 11: 25, 26.

Martin. - Naomi (Weber) Martin was born in Waterloo, Ont., June 29, 1896; died at the Toronto Mission Home Friday evening, May 20, 1921; aged 24 y. 10 m. 22 d. She was united in marriage to Nelson B. Martin March 21, 1917. To this union were born twins who died in infancy. Sister Martin's illness was of very short duration. She had been visiting at her father's home for a few days. On Thursday morning, May 19, she complained of sore throat and felt that she had better go home to the Mission. On her arrival there at noon she took a few hours' rest after which she felt a good deal better. The physician said that there is nothing serious, only an attack of [tonsilitis]. The following day there was a turn for the worse and at 8 o'clock in the evening she went to be with her Lord. She confessed Christ at the early age of twelve and gave a brilliant testimony of absolute trust in Jesus until her hope was realized. Her labors at the Mission were greatly blessed among the children and the mothers. We think she will be greatly missed, yet are firmly convinced that this is God's will, and that His way is best. She leaves to mourn her sudden departure a loving husband, an aged grandmother, father, mother, five sisters and seven brothers, as well as a large circle of relatives and friends. A funeral service was held at the Mission on Sunday afternoon conducted by Bro. L. W. Hoover, Markham. On Monday morning the body was taken to her father's home, north of Waterloo, from whence the funeral was held in the afternoon. The funeral services in the Waterloo Church were conducted by the brethren Jonas Snider, S. F. Coffman, and Oscar Burkholder. Texts, I Tim. 6: 12; I Cor. 13: 13; Matt. 24: 44.

Erb Street (David Eby) Mennonite Church

Early services which began around 1837 were held in private homes. Land at the corner of Erb Street and Hallman Road, where the present-day cemetery is located, was donated by David Eby Sr. on July 14, 1851; a red brick church known as David Eby's Church was built in the same year. The first minister in the new church was Jacob M. Oberholtzer who served from 1852 to 1874. He was followed by Elias Schneider (1874-1889), Jonas Snider (1892-1900), Newton Weber (1921-1923), and Noah Hunsberger (1923-1929).
Due to a difference of opinion in the David Eby congregation, Sunday School classes were held at first in a private home, that of Levi Groff, beginning in 1887. The dissension which resulted culminated in a division in the church in 1889; the minister, Elias Schneider, and the deacon, Menno S. Shantz, left the church and joined with the Old Order Mennonites of Woolwich Township. The following year, 1890, saw the commencement of "Edification Meetings", which were held in the homes of members of the David Eby congregation. These meetings later became the Young People's Bible Meetings.
By the beginning of the twentieth century, it was recognized that the church building was either in need of repair or in need of complete replacement. Consideration was given to building a new church on the same site or on a site on King Street North. A decision was made to accept from Samuel S. Snider the donation of a parcel of land which was also on Erb Street, but nearer town. Excavation of the foundation for the new church began in the Spring of 1902. A dedication service was held on August 17, 1902. A parsonage was built in 1929 on land donated by Herbert Snider, the son of Samuel Snider. The church building was renovated and enlarged in 1949-1950; a dedication service was held on April 9, 1950. Further renovations were made in 1974..
