BLAIR SUPPLIED PRESTON WITH HYDRO, ELECTRIC POWER

James Fenwick owned and operated the first electric light plant in Preston in 1891. Records in the Town Treasurer's office show that the first account in Preston's books was registered in 1891 when they paid $407,00 for street lighting. There were power shortages and the burden fell on the shoulders of the owner. Mr. Fenwick first operated his steam plant and dynamo in Harry Hamacher's Carriage Shop on King Street. The street lights were turned off at twelve o 'clock. I believe that on moonlight nights they did not come on.

A steam plant was expensive and waterpower was much cheaper so the plant was moved to Blair on the property of Charles Beck. There was a big stone building on this property which had first been a tannery, run by Bechtels, then a distillery owned by Thomas Reed.

Even in those days there were dry speels, and the water power had to be supplemented with steam generated power.

In winter storms raged bringing down poles and wires. A Privately owned plant had lots of trouble. Collections were made from customers every Monday morning. While in Blair an opposition plant was started by John Shearer, chiefly supplying light for homes.

After a number of years Mr. Fenwick moved back to Preston, renting a room and steam power from Clare Bros. In 1910 Preston built a municipal plant and agreed to take 600 horsepower from Hydro, Community" dances were blacked out at midnight unless arrangements were made to have the power left on, then a fee of a dollar an hour was charged.

This gentleman commenced business in 1883, having since built up a splendid trade, which is constantly increasing, and that is the best recommendation that can be given of the class of good s turned out, being really of a first-class character, none but skillful and experienced workmen being employed. Mr . Hamacher manufactures all kinds of carriages, making a specialty of light work, such as pleasure sleighs, Surrey waggons, Gladstone waggons, phaetons, and piano box buggies. The goods are all hand-made, and in design, finish and general workmanship are unsurpassed. Mr. Hamacher is himself a practical and experienced carriage builder, and gives his perso nal attention to his industry. He is widely known in Preston and surrounding country, and is highly respected. Mr. Wm. Nafe has the general supervision of the works, and through his untiring energy and executive ability the works have obtained their present proportions.

David H. Boettger

David H. Boettger, 85, of RR 1 Waterloo, died Wednesday at K-W Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born in Kitchener, a son of the late M. and Mrs. Charles Boettger. Except for eight years at Port Dalhousie, he had spent his entire life in the Twin city area.

Before retirement in 1947, Mr. Boettger was employed at the footwear division of Dominion Rubber Company Limited for more than 30 years.

A member of Emmanuel EUB church, Bridgeport, he formerly served as Sunday school superintendent for 25 years and as a trustee and chairman of the board for many years. He was chairman of the building committee when the present church was built. He sang in the choir and served as a lay member of the Canada Conference of the Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Mr. Boettger was the first trustee of Bridgeport when it became a police village.

His wife, the former Leah Lachman, predeceased him in 1960.

Surviving are five sons, Harvey of Eugenia Fall, Ont., Carl of Rummelhart, Warren and Donald of Lexington, and Earl of Kitchener; seven daughters, Mrs. Stuart (Grace) Kuhn of Baden, Mrs. carl (Ruth) Featherstone of Bridgeport, Mrs. Frank (Pearl)( Beynon Jr. of Meaford, Mrs. Marvin (Winnifred) Hexamer of Brantford, and Mrs. Milton (Kathryn) Schwindt, Mrs. Arthur (Lenore) Plomske and Mrs. Ralph (Dorothy) Musselman, all of Lexington, and one sister, Mrs. George (Hattie) Egerton of Galt. Forty-one grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren also survive. Four brothers and two sisters predeceased him.

The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel funeral Home until noon Saturday when removal will be made to Emmanuel EUB Church, Bridgeport, for service at 3 pm, Rev. E.F. Dorsch, minister of the church, will officiate, assisted by Rev. G.F. Barthel. Interment will be in Bridgeport Memorial Cemetery.

A charter member of First Baptist Church, Waterloo and a band master for five years of the K-W Air Cadets. Son of the late Francis and Elizabeth Hamacher. She was pre-deceased by her husband Stuart in 1974 and by her daughter Nancy (Brenner) in 2006. Also predeceased by eight brothers and four sisters. Grace was happy to be a Charter Member of Nith Valley Chapter, No. 285, New Hamburg, Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a faithful member at Livingston Presbyterian Church for many years. John Daniel (Jack) Boettger passed away peacefully February 18, 2022, surrounded by family. Left to celebrate his life and missing his amazing hugs are his wife of 73 years, Ruby (Decher), his children Susan Rivers (Keith), Allan Boettger, Kathy Duncan, Tom Boettger (Kate), Karen Boettger and Cindy Fish (Dave), as well as his grandchildren Angela Boettger (Paul Basarke), Paul Boettger, Adam Kasper (Shannan), Andrew Rivers (Kelly), Gillian Dyck (Dan), Stephanie Bezaire (Phil), Geoffrey Rivers (Kourtney), Scott Boettger (Melissa), Trevor Smith, Aaron Duncan (Jessica), Isabella Wideman (Ben), Courtney Fish, Jena Fish and 17 great grandchildren.

Jack was predeceased by sister Shirley Hoch and brothers Ken Boettger and Harold Boettger, son-in-law Kevin Duncan and daughter-in-law Laura Smith. He was a Canadian Navy veteran of World War II, a lifetime member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Kitchener and past president of KW Project Woodwork.
Jack's greatest loves, after Ruby, were family, golf and the Blue Jays. He never missed an opportunity to play with his 30 grand and great grand children. They all share fond memories of time spent together. He was always ready to tee off for a round on the links with friends and family, claiming two aces and shooting his age in the process. He and Ruby followed the Jays to spring training, as well as on road trip bus tours during their time in retirement.

Jack raised his family with great work ethic, unconditional love, grace and humility. He demonstrated the importance and strength of faith and family. We are doing our best to live and pass on his legacy.

We are proud to be the house that Jack built.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Village of Winston Park for their care of Jack during his time with them.

Jack's family will receive relatives and friends from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM on Wednesday, February 23rd, 2022 at Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener. Boettger, Ken - Passed away, peacefully, with his family by his side, at St. Mary's General Hospital, Kitchener, on Thursday, February 22, 2007, at the age of 81. Beloved husband of the late Audrey (Buss) Boettger (1997). Loving father of Pat and Ralph Dekker, Craig and Bev Boettger, Cheryl and Randy Kredler, Gary and Cheryl Boettger, Grant and Marilyn Boettger, Wendy and Larry Pinkerton and Christine Boettger and Warren Koskey.
