Funeral services were conducted by Oscar Burkholder, on Dec. 29, burial taking place in the Breslau cemetery. Text II Tim. 4: 7.

Barn destroyed by fire sat on site of 1954 plowing match

BRESLAU - The region is set to lose the barn on a farm property that hosted one of the most tumultuous events in the region's history - the 1954 International Plowing Match.

The John Randall barn, located just outside of Breslau across from Belgian Nurseries on Highway 7, fell victim to two fires apparently set by vandals, and will be torn down at some point this week. The farmhouse has already been demolished.

The 1954 plowing match, a farm exhibit show, was dogged by rain on its first two days, and on Oct. 15 it was struck by the full force of the infamous hurricane Hazel, which killed 81 people in Ontario and left 1,868 families homeless.

At the plowing match, strong winds blew over much of the tent city that had risen on the farms of Randall and neighbours. More than 100 tents were destroyed, which cost exhibitors about $500,000 in damages.

Helga Hartman, the current membership chair of the Waterloo Historical Society, was in Grade 7 when the plowing match took place. She remembers travelling to the event with the senior grades from Lexington Public School the day before the hurricane struck.

"It had been raining for more than a week and everything was saturated," she said.

"I remember how gooey the mud was. A lot of people lost their shoes and boots," she added with a laugh.

She also remembers the hurricane, calling it a "major event," and said the levelling of the tent city was a "disaster."

As for the barn, Hartman will be sad to see it go.

"It was a beautiful, white barn," she said. "Once it's gone, there will be nothing to mark the event which took place."

While there are usually plaques placed at the sites of international plowing matches, there is none at the Randall farm. Hartman said she is going to raise the issue with the Waterloo Historical Society.

"It was something that was really big at the time, and it will be wiped off the surface of the earth."

    ______________

    PAIR WED 50 YEARS

    Small Farmer Said 'Doomed'

Mr. and Mrs. Jacob C. Randall who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary today, believe that today a successful farmer must operate on a big scale.

And the celebrants ought to know. They have been farming all their married days at RR 1, Preston.

"Like the supermarkets have replaced the corner store, so the big farmer is outdoing the small man", Mr. Randall said. "Fifty years ago the little farmer could make a good living off the land- today he has to have an education, a big farm and plenty of capital since machinery is so expensive".

When the Randalls started farming, they had 80 acres of land and everything from pigs and chickens to cows and horses. Now they have a modest seven acres having sold 70 to the Wellington-Waterloo Airport in 1948 and three acres to a son Lloyd, who built a house next door.
And hard work never killed anyone, the couple agree. They managed the chores themselves with their four sons helping out.

"We never had any hired help, and I even helped load grain, milk cows, and clean the stables when things got piled up." Mrs. Randall said.
Mr. and Mrs. Randall were wed at the home of the bride's parents, RR 1, Preston, where the couple have lived since their marriage.
She is the former Ida May Schiedel, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Menno Schiedel, RR 1, Preston. Mr. Randall, 78, is a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Randall of Woolwich Township.

Their attendants were Mr. Randall's brother, the late Amos Randall, and Mrs. Randall's cousin, the late Mrs. Gerry Keffer. The late Bishop Jonas Snider of Waterloo officiated.

"Farming is not the only thing that has changed a great deal. The standard of living is about ten times as high," Mr. Randall said.
The couple, who have seven children, said it costs them as much for groceries today for just the two of them as it did years ago for the entire family.

"And a honeymoon then was as uncommon as no honeymoon today," he added. He recalled the day after their marriage which entailed a trip to Berlin (Kitchener) to have photos taken; voting in the Dominion election when Sir Wilfred Laurier and his liberal government wre defeated and later in the week in which they travelled by horse and buggy to visit Mrs. Randall's aunt at Puslinch Lake. Monday they were back to farming again.

The Randalls have four married sons, Layton of Baden, John of Kitchener, Lloyd, RR 1, Preston, and Elton, RR 2, Preston. Their daughters are Eileen of Preston, Mrs. Robert (Nora) Hammond of Galt, and Alice of Kitchener. They have 13 grandchildren adn one great-grandchild.
Two of their sons are still engaged in farming-John was host at his farm for the International Plowing Match in 1954, the year hurrican (sic) Hazel whipped through the area.

Members of Breslau Mennonite Church, the couple enjoy good health. In their spare time, Mr. Randall enjoys a simple stroll through the woods, while Mrs. Randall devotes her free hours to piecing quilts for relief.

Tonight the couple will be entertained at a dinner party at Zehr's restaurant with immedate families and close relatives present.
Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., the couple will hold open house. They expect more than 200 friends will help them celebrate their golden wedding anniversary.

    Obituary of Lydian Frey

On Friday, January 1st 2021, at 7:26 in the evening, Lydian Frey age 90, of Steinbach, Manitoba passed away peacefully at her residence surrounded by her family. She is survived by her four sons, Paul (Rhoda) Frey, Larry (LaVonne) Frey, Steven (Theresa) Frey, Calvin Frey, her daughter Ruthann (partner Bill) Snyder, fifteen grandchildren, and twenty seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Amos Martin and his wife Lorna, of Elmira, Ontario.

She was predeceased by her devoted husband of sixty five years, Alvin Frey, and by her parents Elias and Anne (Brox) Martin, and by four brothers and three sisters.

Lydian Frey was born in the Wellesley Township of southern Ontario on March 1, 1930 and she grew up on a small market garden farm surrounded by eight siblings and a loving community. She attended public school in Heidelberg, Ontario and she spoke often of walking the two miles to school and home again in all kinds of weather with her siblings and friends. She also spoke affectionately about helping her parents on the farm and going to market with them to sell their produce. As a young woman Lydian worked in a candy factory making chocolate covered maraschino cherries - a delicacy that she could not eat for the remainder of her days because of the overindulging in the "culls" that she did while on the quality control line at work.

At the age of seventeen she met a dashing young man by the name of Alvin Frey who swept her off her feet. Since her parents insisted that she not get married until she turned nineteen, Lydian waited for almost one seemingly-unending month after her nineteenth birthday before marrying Alvin in March of 1949. After their wedding, Lydian began housekeeping in the home of her new in-laws in the small village of Wallenstein, Ontario. About a year after moving with Alvin into his parents' home their first son, Paul, was born. In the year immediately following the birth of their son, they converted the upper story of an adjacent chicken barn into a cozy little residence for their growing family. They lived happily in this newly refurbished home until their second son, Larry, was born. At this point they purchased the house directly around the corner, and here they continued to live until the summer of 1960. Their third son, Steven, was born during this time.

Lydian and her husband Alvin and their young family were very involved in the small Mennonite church in Hawkesville. Although by this time Alvin had sampled various careers, including beginning a farm drainage company with his dad and his brothers and being part-owner of a small baby shoe manufacturing factory, he and Lydian always sensed a greater call on their lives to become more directly involved in the Lord's work. In 1959, during a summer trip with their children to visit Northern Light Gospel Mission in northwestern Ontario, Alvin and Lydian discovered that the calling that was to occupy much of their future life would be serving as missionaries among the Oji-Cree people north of Red Lake. Upon returning to Wallenstein they sold their house and belongings, and in 1960 they moved their young family to the small, isolated community of Deer Lake, Ontario.

Although this new life was completely different from anything that Lydian had ever lived, she always continued to maintain a secure and loving environment for her family and to provide a refuge for anyone in need. Many times her home became a place where sick babies, needy seniors or injured animals were nursed back to health. She also became adept at preparing gourmet meals using locally accessible moose, beaver, rabbit and muskrat, garnishing them with macaroni noodles, canned tomatoes, and other available "delicacies". Of necessity she became an expert at long-term meal planning and improvisation because many times during the freeze-up and breakup seasons new food supplies could only be obtained on a bi-monthly basis.

After spending twenty years in northwestern Ontario, and after the addition of an adopted daughter, Ruthann, and a fourth-born son, Calvin, Lydian returned with her husband and two youngest children to southern Ontario. Here she joined her husband in their ministry of founding and pastoring churches in Atwood and Listowel, Ontario. It was also during this happy time in Lydian's life that she and her husband welcomed an infant granddaughter, Tanya (Carlon) Yoder, into their home, raising her as one of their own children.

In 1987 Lydian and Alvin moved to Landmark, Manitoba, which became the home base from which her husband's trans-local church planting ministry took place. This work occupied their lives until their retirement and beyond. Here, as in every place that she lived, she participated fully in life and ministry by continuing to offer gracious hospitality to everyone - the trademark of her life. She was always able to cheerfully rise to the occasion and provide meals and lodging for unexpected guests, even when they arrived at inconvenient times the day or night.

Although Lydian's life was filled with ministry and service, she also always seemed to find time for a good hobby or two. Her loves included gardening, quilting and embroidering and other handwork. Her large, homemade quilting frame was almost permanently set up in the house at one location or other, and garden-fresh vegetables graced many a summer meal. She also loved experimenting with different recipes and foods. She often spoke with great nostalgia of a trip which she and Alvin made to Israel; one of the highlights of which was being able to sample various, random foods from the street vendors. She also spent many happy times in Mexico with her son, Steven, where she was always up for almost anything, including novel culinary adventures.

Shortly after her husband passed away in 2013 she moved into an apartment at Woodhaven Manor where she spent her final days. Her days there, as she became increasingly unable to walk easily, were spent praying for her family and acquaintances, reading numerous books and enjoying visits from family and friends. As her health failed, heaven became an ever-more real and tangible place where she desired to go with an increasing passion. And it is to that eternal place of endless joy and glory that her family has released her now.

We wish to express our deepest gratitude to the wonderful ladies of Home Care who so tenderly and lovingly served our Mom during their numerous visits to care for her. We are also very grateful for the products which Home Care provided, making it possible for the family to be involved with her care in her own residence until her final passing.

We also want to thank the Haven Group for enabling our family to provide care for our Mom within their facility in these most unusual times. We can't thank you enough.

A come & go viewing for Lydian will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. at Birchwood Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, MB. Please remain in your vehicle until instructed by the funeral home staff.

A private interment will be held.

Donations in memory of Lydian may be made to Voice in the Wilderness Ministries. Please contact the family for further details.

    Notes:

ST. CLAIR A light has gone out among us with the passing of Florence Elizabeth (Brox) Brenner, who died February 2, 2006 in St. Clair, Michigan with her children by her bedside. She was just turning 87. Florence was a great mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. We will miss her. She was born on March 9, 1919 in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada to a Mennonite couple Henry Brox and Dorothy Oppertshauser Brox. Her Mennonite background would serve her well during the Depression of 1929 and years of gardening, canning and self sufficiency. Named after Florence Nightingale, the British nurse who dedicated her life to caring for the sick and war wounded, Florence was always ready and willing to help those in need. In 1928, nine year old Florence and her family moved to Melvindale, Michigan when her father, a skilled cast iron worker accepted a job to help build Model T cars at the Ford Motor Company. They lived with a distant aunt until her father purchased a lot and built a house about three miles from his work. At the time, she could only speak German. Florence attended Daesher Elementary School in Melvindale where she learned English and settled in as a new immigrant American. She attended and graduated from Melvindale High School in 1937. After graduation, she worked for several attorneys in the Penobscot Building in Detroit. When she became overly stressed worrying about the mothers and children in divorce proceedings, her father made her quit this $10 a week job. She went to work in a local C.J. Smith grocery store where they shopped. Florence loved this job, and her math skills and love for people made her a popular employee. Here she earned $12 a week. In 1939 she met her future husband, Chuck Brenner. They married in February 1940 and moved to Detroit. They were together for 58 years until Chuck died in 1998. During their long marriage, they gave the world seven children who in turn produced over two dozen grandchildren and over two dozen great-grandchildren. Chuck, Florence and their kids moved to St. Clair County in 1953. After a year renting a farmhouse at the corner of Division (now Fred Moore Hwy) and Mitchell (now Wadhams Road), they bought 40 acres on Trumble Road and built a house. In 1975, they bought another 40 acres on Allington Road and moved from Trumble Road to a new custom-built house. Here they lived until 1998. During her life, Florence worked as a secretary, grocery store clerk, school bus driver, school cafeteria employee, grocery store manager, Girl Scout leader and even mailing clerk at the St. Clair County Press. Florence loved tennis, gardening, crocheting, quilting, cooking, baking and children of all ages. She is most remembered as a loving and wonderful mother and grandmother. Of over 200 photos that were displayed at her life graduation celebration at Immanuel Lutheran Church following burial, many photos showed her holding babies and young children. She was born as WWI was ending, and she lived through WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and the Gulf War. During her 87 years, she saw the U.S. Postage Stamp go from .01 to .39 and income taxes go from 2% to their present high level. She lived during the administrations of 16 presidents and saw the introduction of hundreds of new innovations, including television, the copy machine, instant cameras, digital cameras, computers, fluorescent lights and the automatic dishwasher. She is survived by seven children, Dr. Rev. Donald (Judy) Brenner of San Diego, Retired Lieutenant Commander, Robert (Carol) Brenner of San Diego, Jack Brenner of Wadhams, Tom (Janyce) Brenner of St. Clair, Susan (Joe) Hohman of Smiths Creek, Richard (Tracy) Brenner of St. Clair and Barbara (John) Jowett of St. Clair; 28 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Joey Hohman. Florence will be fondly remembered as a person who cared. She was honest, she was devoted to her family, and she was a loving member of our community. A devout Christian she is now enjoying eternal life with her husband, Chuck. We are all better off because she lived among us. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Clair and her remains will be buried next to Chuck at Hillside Cemetery. Visiting hours are 6 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Young Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, China Twp. and Monday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

REGION COUNCILLOR IRVIN BRUBACHER DIES AT AGE 57

Breslau --Irvin Brubacher, a Waterloo regional and Woolwich township councillor for the past 3 1/2 years died Monday of a heart attack, he was 57. Brubacher a Breslau area farmer who was acclaimed to his second term of office in 1978, served on a number of committees at both levels. He was also a member of the Waterloo-Wellington Airport commission and active in area recreation. Brubaker was found on the floor of his barn Monday afternoon and taken to Cambridge Memoral Hospital. He was pronounced dead and an autopsy was performed. Funeral services will be held Thursday at Breslau Mennonite Church and burial will be at Bloomingdale cemetery. Edward R. Good funeral home in Waterloo is in charge of arrangements. Brubacher is survived by his wife Helen, four daughters, five grandchildren, his mother, two brothers and two sisters. He was predeceased by one son. "He will certainly be missed on council." Woolwich Township Mayor Ken Seiling said Monday. Seiling said Brubacher's Ward 3 - which includes Breslau, Bloomingdale and Maryhill areas of the township - will either be represented by someone appointed by council or will remain without representation until the November municipal election, since there are only about three months remaining in Brubacher's two year term. Seiling said council will consider its options when it meets next week. But Seiling said Brubacher's regional seat "will be filled immediately" Regional solicitor Elmer Moore said that while Township council has the option of not selecting a replacement this late in the term, a regional council seat cannot remain vacant. Traditional, Woolwich has selected one member from each of its three wards to serve on region council. "but it is in council's power to send anyone. It isnot bound to send someone from ward 3, but it has been a tradition," said Seiling, who reprsents Ward 1. Howard Ziegler, a former township mayer, represents Ward 2 and is the township's other regional councillor. Brubacher was vice-chairman of two regional committees, health and social services and personnel. He also served as the township's finance committee chairman and a member of the township recreation committee. Born in Elmira and a lifetime resident of the Township, Brubacher was a charter member and past president of the Bridgeport Lions club. He was also active in a number of farm organizations.
