    Magdalena Snyder, "was born December 8th, 1845. On October 20th, 1867, she was married to Jacob B. Schmitt, a farmer. They resided in Wilmot Township, at the Schmitt Mennonite Meeting House, on his father's old homestead, where she died July 25th, 1885, leaving a family of nine children".

    Shantz.-Sarah Ann, beloved wife of Herman Shantz and eldest daughter of the late Jacob B. Schmitt, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Jan. 12, 1870; was married to Herman Shantz Jan. 1, 1891. This union was blessed with 3 sons and 6 daughters. She was the first of her family to answer the death summons from on high. Disease gripped her body and for 18 months her health gradually failed and she fell peacefully asleep on the morning of Feb. 1,1937; aged 67 y. 20 d. She leaves her deeply bereaved husband, 3 sons, 6 daughters, 19 grandchildren, 3 brothers, 3 sisters,. and many relatives and friends. May God comfort the bereaved family. As a mother in the home, she tried to lead her family into the fold of Christ. May God reward her labors. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; yea, saith the Spirit. That they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them." Funeral services were conducted Feb. 1 by Bros. Orphen Wismer and Manassah Hallman at the Shantz Church near Baden. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

    Schmitt. - Ephraim, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob B. Schmitt, was born in Wilmot Twp., Ont., Oct. 20, 1873; died at his home, in Baden, Ont. Aug. 13, 1947; aged 73 y. 9 m. 24 d. On Feb. 26, 1908 he was married to Ella Shantz, who survives. Also surviving are 4 sons (Weston, Lowville, N.Y.; Elvin and Wilfred, Kitchener, Ont.; Elroy, Preston, Ont.), 3 daughters (Winifred - Mrs. Morgan Witzel, and Mary, Baden, Ont.; and Leona - Mrs. Camley Harbridge, Gravenhurst, Ont.), one brother (Emmanuel, Petersburg, Ont.), and 3 sisters (Mrs. Jeremiah Good, New Hamburg, Ont.; Mrs. David Shantz, of Baden; and Mrs. John Boshart, Watertown, N.Y.). He was a member of the Shantz Mennonite Church, Baden, Ont., from the time of his youth. Funeral services were held Aug. 16 at the home and at the Shantz Church, in charge of L. H. Witmer and C. C. Cressman. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery

    Schmitt, Emanuel S., son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Schmitt, was born Dec. 22, 1875; died Feb. 12, 1957; aged 81 y. 1 m. 21 d. He accepted Christ in his youth and continued a faithful member of Shantz Church, Baden, Ont., all his life. In 1901 he was married to Elmina Cressman, who predeceased him in 1941. In 1944 he married Mrs. Lavina Schiedel, who survives. Also surviving are 2 sons (Jacob, Baden, Ont.; Daniel, Kitchener, Ont.), one daughter (Vera-Mrs. Herbert Witmer, Baden), 4 stepsons (Harold Wilfred, Carl and John Schiedel), 3 stepdaughters (Edna-Mrs. Edward Knarr, Mary and Dorothy-Mrs. George McKee), and 2 sisters (Mrs. David Shantz and Mrs. John Boshart). Funeral services were conducted at the Shantz Church on Feb. 14, by Curtis Cressm and L. H. Witmer, with burial in the Shantz Mennonite Cemetery.

    Good.--Angeline, daughter of the late Jacob and Madeline Schmitt, was born in Wilmot Twp., Ont., Nov. 18, 1877; passed away after a year's illness, July 17, 1948; aged 70 y. 7 m. 29 d. At the age of eighteen she accepted Christ and united with the Mennonite Church, of which she remained a member until death. On Dec. 13, 1898, she was married to Jeremiah Good, who survives. Also surviving are 3 daughters (Ida - Mrs. Russel Peters and Verna - Mrs. Melvin Hunsberger, New Hamburg, Ont.; and Reta - Mrs. Phares Koch, Kitchener, Ont.), 10 grandchildren, 2 sisters and one brother. Two brothers and one sister predeceased her. She cheerfully performed her duties as a deacon's wife and was active in sewing circle and other charitable work. Her kindly smile and helpfulness will be missed by a large circle. Funeral services were held at the home and at the Biehn Mennonite Church, New Hamburg, July 20, in charge of Moses H. Roth, assisted by Manasseh Hallman. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery.

    Shantz, Saloma, daughter of Jacob B. and Saloma [should read Magdalena] Schmidt, was born in Waterloo, Ont., June 23, 1882; died at Nithview Home, New Hamburg, Ont., Aug. 2, 1972; aged 90 y. 1 m. 10 d. On May 17, 1905, she was married to David Shantz, who survives. Also surviving are 2 sons (Lorne and Stanley), one daughter (Eileen--Mrs. Gordon Burkhardt), 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. One son (Walter) preceded her in death. She was a member of the Shantz Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held Aug. 6, in charge of J. Lester Kehl and Leslie H. Witmer; interment in Shantz Cemetery.

    Mrs. Arthur H. Roth of New Hamburg, died on Monday at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, at the age of 76.

    The former Alfretta Shantz, she was born Sept. 24, 1892, in Wilmot Township, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Herman S. Shantz and had been a life-long resident of New Hamburg. She was a member of Zion United Church, New Hamburg.

    Surviving besides her husband, are one son, Marshall W. of Kitchener; five sisters, Mrs. Jacob (Selina) Cressman of Preston; Olive Shantz of Louville, N.Y.; Mrs. Clinton (Edna) Habel of Kitchener; Mrs. Clarence (Lyla) Roth of Waterloo, and Mrs. Noah (Violet) Herner of Petersburg; three brothers, Lincoln Shantz of Alberta; Russell and Lloyd Shantz, both of Waterloo; and three grandchildren.

    The body will be at the Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home until Wednesday noon when removal will be made to Zion United Church for service at 3 p.m. Rev. J.B. Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery.

Born February 29, 1912, Elroy only officially celebrated 23 leap year birthdays. Elroy was a founding member and Trustee of Faith Evangelical Missionary Church where he belonged to the Silver Set. He was employed at Schneider Foods for over 30 years. He enjoyed meeting and talking to people especially those he crossed paths with while selling Watkins products from his home and at the Waterloo Farmers Market. As a member of the Victoria School Senior Citizens Centre he enjoyed shuffleboard and lawn bowling. Having grown up on a farm, Elroy loved gardening and puttering in his yard and tool shed. Friends are invited to share their memories of Elroy with his family at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King Street South, Waterloo on Thursday (today), May 19, 2005 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service to celebrate Elroy's life will be held at Faith Evangelical Missionary Church, 3849 King Street East, Kitchener on Friday, May 20, 2005 at 11 a.m. with the Rev.     FORSTER, Mary Magdalena (nee Schmitt) Passed away peacefully in Perth, Ontario, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer, on February 11, 2010, in her 85th year. Beloved wife of the late Howard Forster (1999). Loving mother of Brian (Elizabeth) of Barrie, Ontario, Rick (Frances) of Napanee, Ontario and Jill (Roy Lewis) of Smiths Falls. Cherished grandmother of Lorraine and Nathan Forster; Mary, Linda and John Forster and Jason, Chris and Lindsay Lewis. Adored great-grandmother of Teagan, Iziah, Cassidy, Maizie and Taiven. Survived by her sister Winnie Witzel and sister-in-law Elsie Gingerich, both of Kitchener, Ontario. Predeceased by her parents Ephraim and Ella Schmitt, brothers Weston, Elvin (Nora), Elroy (Pearl) and Wilfred (Clara) and sister Leona (Camley Harbridge) and brothers-in-law Morgan Witzel and Oliver Gingerich. Mary was a graduate of the K/W Hospital School of Nursing (Class of 1947). She was proud to be a nurse and enjoyed her profession. Her last position was as a nursing supervisor at the Rideau Regional Centre in Smiths Falls. She was devoted to family living and was an active, loving, and enthusiastic person overall. In keeping with Mary's wishes, cremation has taken place, and there will be no visitation. A memorial service to celebrate Mary's life will be held on February 20th at 1: 00 p.m. at the Bridgeport United Church in Kitchener. Friends desiring may make a memorial contribution to the Canadian Cancer Society. The family of Mary Forster would like to thank Dr. Robin Kennie and the 2nd Floor nursing staff at the Perth and Smiths Falls District Hospital, Perth Unit.

    Mrs. Herbert Wismer of 424 Grandview Ave., New Hamburg, died on Saturday at St. Mary s Hospital, Kitchener, at the age of 64.

    Mrs. Wismer, the former Vera Schmitt, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Schmitt had resided in New Hamburg for eight years. She was a member of Shantz Mennonite Church.

    She was predeceased by her husband, Herbert in 1964 and by a brother.

    She is survived by a brother, Daniel of Kitchener.

    Funeral services were held Monday at Shantz Mennonite Church, Rev. Leslie Witmer officiating.

    Interment was in the church cemetery.

    The Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

    Baden man dies in crash

    BADEN (Staff)- A Baden man is dead and his wife in stable condition after a car-pickup truck accident on Highway 7 Wednesday afternoon.

    Lorne Shantz, 85, died at the scene of the crash, police said.

    His wife, Ada, 82, who was a passenger in his car is in stable condition at K-W Hospital.

    Cambridge OPP said Shantz was southbound on Wilmot Township Road 16 and he had stopped for the stop sign at Highway 7.

    He then proceeded on to the highway into the path of a westbound pickup truck driven by Charles Miles, 36, of Tavistock. Miles received minor injuries. Highway 7 was closed for 2 ½ hours.

    Shantz was the father of two girls and three boys, including Ralph Shantz, the former mayor of Wilmot Township, said Wilmot Coun. Harold Schmidt.

    Shantz was a trustee of the Shantz Mennonite Church in Baden, a former school trustee and one-time director of the Baden and District Chamber of Commerce, Schmidt said.

She worked for many years at J.M. Schneiders and was a member of First Mennonite Church, Kitchener and the WMSC. In her retirement years she was actively involved in the lives of her grand- children. Ilene enjoyed travelling with her friends, flower gardening and in her later years, she attended the Kitchener Downtown Seniors Program. The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 9, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Henry Walser Funeral Home , 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467.     Passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 19, 2021at Innisfree Hospice, Kitchener. Jim was born 86 years ago on February 15, 1935 in Baden, Ontario, and was a long time resident of Wilmot Township.

    Jim will be forever remembered by his beloved wife Shirley (Knechtel) Shantz whom he married on June 18, 1955. Cherished father of Kim Trottier (Michael), Greg (Michele) and Dean (Pat). Loving grandfather to Jill Drader, Josh (Dara) Martin, Emily Shantz (Kevin) and Matthew Shantz. Super Gramps to great-grandchildren Jake and Cooper Drader, Mason, Theo and Hana Martin. Loved by his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; Janet & Jim, Marlene, Brian and Kathy and by his many nieces and nephews. Predeceased and now reunited with his father and mother; Lloyd and Alice (Wismer) Shantz, father-in-law and mother-in-law Clifford and Reta Knechtel, brother and sister-in-law Delford and Laurene Shantz and brother-in-law Doug Knechtel.

    Jim was a faithful member of the Zion United Church in New Hamburg. He was a man of integrity and loyalty as demonstrated throughout his careers in Industrial Relations and most recently as a Realtor with CB Peter Benninger Realty. As an avid sports fan, his loyalty was challenged at times but he stuck with his Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays.

    The family wishes to express sincere thanks to all of Jim's personal care team, especially Cindy, Simon and Sandy. We would also like to thank the amazing staff at Innisfree Hospice for the compassion, dignity and professional care shown to our family as you walked this journey besIde all of us these past few weeks.
