    Death of Mrs. Arthur White

    Died, in Ayr, on Thursday, Oct. 28th, 1920, at 12: 20 a.m., Sarah Eleanor, beloved wife of Arthur White, in her 52nd year. The deceased had been in her usual state of health and going about her duties up to within a couple of hours of her demise and the sudden call came as a surprise, the immediate cause being acute indigestion. Mrs. White was born at Hutton, Essex, England, and was married in 1895, coming to Canada in 1907. She resided in Oshawa for a short time, thence to Ayr, where she lived for upwards of 13 years. When Christ Church (Episcopalian) was organized she became one of its first members, and was also a prominent member of the Women's Guild. The members of her family comprise three daughters, Mrs. Thos. Hawes, Ayr, and Addie and Eliza at home. One sister, Mrs. Wm. Manley, also resides here, and four other sisters and one brother live in England. Mr. White also survives. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon to the Ayr cemetery, Rev. E. L. Roberts conducting the service. The pallbearers were Messrs. Harry Marshall, Percy Carter, Harold Cornford, W. Watkins, and Jacob and Arthur Undeerwood.

    Mrs. Thomas Hawes

    Mrs. Thomas Hawes of Piper Street, Ayr, passed away in St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener on Saturday, March 21st, 1981. She was 85. The former Dorothy Lillian White, she was born in England, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Arthur White. As a young girl she moved with her family to Canada, living in the Toronto area for a time before settling in Ayr. Mrs. Hawes was a valued member of Christ Anglican Church, Ayr; director of the Altar Guild and past president of the Ladies Guild. Predeceased by her husband; survived by sons, Thomas of Toronto, Arthur of Cambridge and Jack of Burlington; daughters Mrs. Robert (Lillian) Todd and Mrs. Gilbert (Anne) Gemmell, both of Ayr. Also survived by a sister Mrs. Howard (Betty) Dolphin of Weston, 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held from the Kipp Funeral Home, Paris on Monday, March 23rd. Rev. Bren de Vries of Christ Church officiated. Interment in Ayr Cemetery.

    A long-time resident of Ayr Mrs. Arthur Underwood, passed away at K-W Hospital on Saturday, August 2nd. The former Adelaide White, she was in her 81st year. Mrs. Underwood was born in London, England coming to Canada as a young lady. She was a member of Christ Anglican Church, Ayr. Predeceased by her husband Arthur Underwood in 1971. Dear mother of William of Ayr and Edward of Kitchener; three grandchildren and two great-granddaughters; dear sister of Mrs. Lillian Hawes of Ayr and Mrs. Howard (Betty) Dolphin of Weston. Private funeral services were held at the William Kipp Funeral Home, Paris, Ontario, on Monday at 2 p.m. Rev. D. E. Willis officiated. Interment in Ayr cemetery.

    Eliza (Betty) Dolphin

    Ayr native Eliza Dolphin, died at the Willett Hospital, Paris on Tuesday, January 25, 2000. Mrs. Dolphin had recently resided at Telfer Place, Paris and was formerly of Weston. She was in her 93rd year. She was a daughter of the late Sarah Eleanor Matthews and Arthur White. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband Howard Dolphin and by sisters Lillian Hawes and Adelaide Underwood and is survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held at the Ayr Chapel, Wm. Kipp Funeral Home on Friday, January 28 at 3:30 p.m. Rev. Bob Schroeder of St. James' Anglican Church, Paris, officiated with Rev. Lynne Calhoun of Christ Anglican Church assisting. Interment will be in the Ayr Cemetery.

    Thomas Daniel Hawes

    A former Ayr resident. Thomas Daniel Hawes of Toronto passed away in Toronto General Hospital on Saturday. October 24th. He was in his 69th year. Born in Toronto, he was a son of the late Thomas E. Hawes and the former Lillian White. He received his schooling in Ayr and gained his trade as a stationary engineer at John Watson Mfg. Mr. Hawes enlisted with the Canadian Army and saw action overseas during World War II. Following the war he joined Manufacturers Life in Toronto as a stationary engineer, retiring three years ago. Surviving are his wife Ida, a daughter Mrs. Victor (Pat) Nash of Toronto; two sisters Mrs. Robert (Lil) Todd and Mrs. Gilbert (Ann) Gemmell, both of Ayr: two brothers, Jack of Burlington and Art of Galt: also four grandchildren. Funeral service and burial took place in Toronto on Tuesday.

The former Lillian Mary Hawes, she was born in Ayr January 13,1915, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hawes. Mrs. Todd was a valued member of Christ Anglican Church, Ayr; member of the church's Ladies Aid; former member of Rebekah Lodge, Home and School Association of Ayr Public School, local association of Guides and Brownies; and a member of Ayr Senior Citizens. Beloved wife of A. Robert Todd and dear mother of Rose Anne (Mrs. Fred Cromwell) of West Bridge, B.C., Dorthey (Mrs. John W. King) of Cambridge, Suzane (Mrs. Keith Hall) of Guelph. Dear sister of Art Hawes of Southampton, Jack Hawes of Burlington, Ann (Mrs. Gilbert Gemmell) of Ayr. Also survived by seven grandchildren. Mrs. Todd was predeceased by a brother Thomas. Rested at Coutts and Son Funeral Home, Galt, where funeral and committal services were held on Monday. Interment in Ayr Cemetery.

    William Underwood

    A popular lifelong resident of Ayr in the person of William Underwood passed away at Hamilton General Hospital on Friday, December 12, 2003.

    Born in Ayr, he was a son of the late Arthur Underwood and Adelaide White.

    Bill received his schooling in Ayr and then enlisted with the Canadian Army during World War II. He served overseas for three years.

    Following the war, he joined the John Watson Manufacturing Co. Ltd. where he was employed for over 50 years as a machinist. After retirement, Bill spent the early hours each morning helping prepare coffee and the daily papers for customers of the Little Short Stop, Ayr.

    An accomplished athlete, Bill and his late brother Ted starred as catcher and pitcher for the provincial championship Ayr Vets softball team in the 1950's. He later was the first coach of the present Ayr Vics team which reorganized in the early 1980's. He was an avid horseshoe player and former member of Ayr Curling Club.

    Bill was always a quiet supporter of his community and in this regard had served a term on Ayr Council in 1952.

    Surviving are his wife, Isabell, nephew Ross and Dianne Howell and their family of Guelph and sister-in-law Helen Underwood of Kitchener.

    Predeceased by brother Edward.

    A private family funeral service was held at the Ayr Chapel, Wm. Kipp Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 16. Reverend France Ouimet-Wilson of Christ Church officiated. Interment in Ayr Cemetery.

    Ted Underwood, Ayr's Former Sporting Great, Passes

    Edward Gordon Underwood, known to many as Ayr's top athlete of the century, passed away in University Hospital, London on Monday, November 2nd. He was 55.

    Mr. Underwood took ill suddenly on the weekend and was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to an aneurism.

    Born in Ayr, he was a son of the late Arthur Underwood and Adelaide White. He attended public and continuation school in the village. During World War II he served with the Royal Canadian Navy. In 1954 Mr. Underwood joined the Kitchener police force. He was promoted to the rank of corporal in 1963 and three years later made the rank of sergeant. With the establishment of regional government in 1973, he became a member of the Waterloo Region Police Force, receiving the rank of staff sergeant in 1974. On February 12, 1978, Sgt. Underwood was placed in charge of the force's Cambridge detective branch.

    During the late 1940's and 1950's, Mr. Underwood had an outstanding athletic career in Ayr. A pitcher, he led the Ayr Vets bail team to the only three O.R.S.A. Intermediate "A." provincial men's championships that have come to Ayr. He was also a hockey player of note, playing on championship Ayr hockey teams during the same period. In later years he enjoyed the sport of golfing at which he excelled.

    Surviving are his wife, the former Helen Granton; a son Gordon of Kitchener; two daughters Mrs. John (Mary) Haight of Wawa and Mrs. Norm (Christine) Thompson of Georgetown; two granddaughters Meghan and Amy Haight; a brother Bill of Ayr; and an aunt Mrs. Pat (Betty) Dolphin of Weston.

    Resting at the Schreiter-Sandrock Funeral Home, 51 Benton Street, Kitchener this afternoon and evening (Wed.). Funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home by Rev. Harry Janke on Thursday at 2 p.m. Interment in Ayr Cemetery.

Loving husband and best friend of Laurie. Step-father of Shawn Gesinghaus. Lovingly remembered by his parents, Mrs. Helen Underwood and the late Edward Underwood, two sisters, Mary and her husband Kelly Culhane and Chris and her husband Norm Thompson. Survived by his parents-in-law, Gloria and George Gesinghaus; brothers-in-law, Brad Gesinghaus and his wife Laurie and Daniel Gesinghaus and Karen Daum; and sister-in-law Cindy and her husband Ron Morrissey and Lisa Nyusa. Sadly missed by his nieces and nephews, Megan, Amy and Courtney, Brett and Brandon, Nicole and Amanda, Brandon, Trevor and Christopher. Visitation was held at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, Kitchener, on Tuesday, Oct. 28. Complete funeral service was conducted in the Ratz-Bechtel Chapel on Wed. (today), at I p.m. Rev.
