    Passing of William Bickell

In death as in life it is often the unexpected that happens. The announcement early Sunday morning of the passing of Mr. William Bickell came as a shock to the community. Although confined to his couch for a decade with rheumatoid arthritis, he was always so cheerful and complained so little that the final call was not anticipated. For several days, however, Mr. Bickell had been quite ill and at 2 o'clock Sunday morning his spirit passed to the other world.

The deceased, who was in his 64th year, was born in Beverly and received his rudimentary education in the Valens Public School, finishing at Waterdown and afterwards taking a Normal school course at Ottawa. Having qualified for the profession of teaching, he at once entered upon his chosen calling, and from 1875 to 1890, with the exception of three years at Mountsberg, he was the principal of the Public school at Clyde. Later he taught at Branchton for three years, coming to Ayr in 1893, where he held the position of principal for two years. It was during this term that he was first afflicted with the trouble that finally assigned him to an invalid's couch.

In politics Mr. Bickell was a staunch Conservative and in religion a Presbyterian, being a member of Stanley-St. church, where he led the choir for two years. In 1910 he was made an honorary member of the Waterloo Teachers' Association. He was secretary of the public School Board for 11 years and auditor for the municipality of Ayr for about the same length of time - performing all his duties with credit to himself and with marked public acceptance. A man of wide knowledge and great breadth of view, he was a pleasing and entertaining conversationalist.

A wealth of floral offerings testified to the esteem in which the deceased was held. Among these tributes were wreathes from the Village Council and the Public School Board, and sprays from Stanley-St. choir and Sabbath School; also beautiful offerings from a number of personal friends. Mr. Bickell had married in 1878, his bride being Isabella McGain of Clyde, who, together with three daughters (Misses Nettie, May and Wilma) survives - an elder daughter (Gertrude) having passed on before.

The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon when interment was made in the beautiful Ayr cemetery, Rev. D. I. Ellison officiating. The pallbearers were Messrs. Wm. Manson, A. G. Watson, John g. Watson, J. L. Black, C. K. Morton and John Q. Reid.
