MRS. N. WILDFONG. Sr.

HESPELER, Aug. 29. Following an illness of twelve years, Mrs. Nathaniel Wildfong, Sr., died yesterday, at her home, in Wellington Township. Mrs. Wildfong, was born 80 years ago, in the district where she lived all her life. She was a member of the Tankard Brethren in Christ. Parents of the deceased were the late Mr. and Mrs. Amos Schantz. Surviving are her husband, in Wellington Township; four stepchildren and 20 grandchildren, together with a number of nieces and nephews. One sister, Melinda Schantz, Kitchener, also survives. The remains are resting at the Stager and Co. Funeral Home, Hespeler, until 11 a.m., Friday, when the body will be removed to Wanner's Mennonite Church, for funeral services, at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Wanner's Cemetery.

Amos Shantz

Kitchener - Funeral services were held here Wednesday afternoon for Amos Shantz, 74, of 61 Hohner Ave., who died Saturday afternoon at Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Shantz was born in Wilmot Township on April 29, 1865, and married Clara E. Giller on March 22, 1887, in Kitchener. He attended Zion Evangelical Church.

Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Leslie F. Shantz, at home, a brother, Jacob Shantz of Plattsville, two sisters, a twin, Mrs. Nathaniel Wildfong of Hespeler and Mrs. Melinda Shantz of Kitchener.

Ervin Rickert - Ervin Rickert, 83, formerly of Lancaster Street East, died Tuesday at the Avondale Nursing Home, Waterloo, after a brief illness. Born in Mannheim, Ont., a son of the last Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Rickert, he had lived in the Twin Cities for the last 57 years. He was employed by Kitchener Lumber Co. Ltd. for many years, retiring in 1951. He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, and of the Golden Age Fellowship at the church. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Matilda Schott, in Nov. 1964, and also by two sons on active service overseas during the Second World War, and by one sister. Surviving are one son, Clarence of Kitchener; two daughters, Mrs. Marvin (Eileen) Holtz and Mrs. Arthur (Gertrude) Schmetzer, both of Kitchener; four brothers, Addison, Harvey and Lloyd, all of Kitchener, and Sydney, of Windsor; and 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, where funeral service will be conducted at 3 pm Thursday by Rev. Dr. John Schmieder, of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Memory Gardens.

Addison Rickert

Addison Rickert of 247 Franklin Ave. N. died at home Saturday July 19, after a lengthy illness. He was 85.

Born in Mannheim March 30, 1884, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus B. Rickert, he farmed in the Mannheim area and later was employed by Ball Brothers Ltd. contractors.

Following his retirement he moved to New Dundee and later to Kitchener.

He was married to the former Edith Cressman, who predeceased him in 1953.

He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, New Dundee.

Survivors include three sons, Clare, Conestogo, Walter, New Dundee, and Ross, Waterloo; two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Beatrice) Jacob and Mrs. Elmer (Doris) Jacob, both of New Dundee; three brothers, Harvey and Lloyd, both of Kitchener, and Sidney, Windsor; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a brother and a sister.

The body was at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 11 a.m. Tuesday. Rev. Delton J. Glebe conducted the service at St. James Church, New Dundee at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Burial was in Union cemetery, New Dundee. Donations to the St. James Church building fund were accepted as expressions of sympathy.

Rickert, Harvey - At his home, 247 Franklin St. N., on Monday, Dec. 16, 1974, after a lengthy illness, Harvey Rickert, age 88 years. Mr. Rickert was born in Mannheim, a son of the late Cyrus Rickert and the former Lovina Shantz. He had resided in New York, Detroit and Chicago and returned to Kitchener in 1945, a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and formerly employed at the National Tubular Products Ltd. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose.

Surviving are a son Lorne Rickert of Salisbury, Md.; two daughters, Matilda (Mrs. Earl Litt) of Windsor and Elaine (Mrs. Ivan Mohr) of New Hamburg; two brothers Sydney of Windsor and Lloyd Rickert of Kitchener; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive; predeceased by two brothers Ervin and Addison and by one sister Mrs. Clara Woods.

Beloved husband of the former Lorraine Schneider; dear father of Marlene Brooke of Los Angeles, Calif., Lorne Ray of RR 2, Petersburg, Charles and Fred, both of Kitchener; grandfather of Dawn Bronte, Lorne, Jeffrey, Kevin and Tracey Shantz. Predeceased by three brothers,Abiah, Areeli, Abner.

He was born in Plattsville on March 16, 1905 a son of the late Jacob M. Shantz; and the former Mary Ann Bingeman, and had been a resident of Kitchener since 1925. He was Advertising and Public Relations Manager for J. M. Schneider Inc. at the time of his retirement in 1970.

He was elected to the Kitchener Public School Board in 1946, was Chairman of Physical Health and Safety Committee in 1947, Board Chairman from 1948 to 1949 and again in 1953. He originated Church and School Week in 1947, promoted the observance of Church and School Week throughout Ontario and later throughout Canada. He was president of the Ontario Association of Public School Trustees for two years and a director of the Ontario Urban and Rural Trustees Association. In 1959 he was elected to the Waterloo County Board of Education and was a member of the Building and Sites Committee from 1969 to 1981. He had a total of 36 years continuous service with the school board and his guiding principle in every decision he made was "Will the child benefit".

He was a member of the K-W Kiwanis Club since 1954 with 15 years of perfect attendance; a member of the Retired Business and Professional Men's Club for 10 years and a former moderator of the Senior Citizens Program on Grand River Cable TV for four years. He was also a member of Grand River Lodge 151, AF & AM.

VETERAN TRUSTEE LORNE SHANTZ DIES AT 76

Lorne Shantz, a Waterloo County Board of Education trustee for Kitchener for 36 years died Friday. Shantz of 30 Farmbrook Pl. was 76. He was the originator of the Church and School Week in 1947 and promoted it throughout the Province. It was a program in which teachers and visiting clergy helped recruit students for church and Sunday school.

Elected to the Kitchener Public School Board in 1946, he served as Chairman in 1948-49 and in 1953. He was president of the Ontario Association of Public School Trustees for a two year period and served as director of the Ontario Urban and Rural Trustees Association. In 1969, he was elected as Waterloo County Public School Board Trustee and was a member of the Board's Building and Sites Committee from 1969 to 1981.

During election campaigns in 1978 as a school trustee he said the Bible should be the first book in the school system and opposed bilingualism in the public schools. He worked for J. M. Schneider Inc. for 41 years, until he retired in 1970 as Advertising and Public Relations Manager. He was a member of the K-W Kiwanis Club since 1954, a member of the K-W Sales and Ad Club and the Retired Business and Professional Men's Club.

During his retirement he hosted a cable television program for senior citizens. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, a daughter and three sons. The funeral is to be held Monday

Obituary of Lorene Yanke Miller

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Lorene Yanke Miller (nee Shantz) on Sunday, May 6, 2018 with her daughters at her side, at Grand River Hospital in her 96th year.

Lovingly remembered by her daughters, Barbara Hahn (Brian) of Waterloo, Joan Sutton (Glenn) of Kincardine. Her grandchildren, Rob Carse, Rebecca Ramshaw (David), John Sutton (Aimee), Jennifer Rutter (Andrew), Graham Sutton (Shannon), Derek, Kaitlyn and Micah Yanke (Toronto and London). Great-grandchildren, Jackson, Tommy, Allison, Katie, Madison, Rachel, Harriet, and Liam.

Predeceased by her parents Morgan C. Shantz and Viola May Young, her husbands Robert Yanke (1985) and Wilbur Miller (2000); son Paul Yanke (2013); and sisters Verda Simpson and June Yates.

Lorene was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother. She always put her family first. Her church and her faith sustained her. Lorene treasured the years she worshipped at Zion United (EUB) Church followed by more than 40 years at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Kitchener.

In her senior years, Lorene enjoyed going to the symphony concerts and trips with Outings. Sewing, quilting and knitting were her long-time hobbies and she maintained her sense of style and fashion to the end.

Lorene enjoyed her time at Bankside Terrace where she enjoyed living for the past year.

Lorene's family will receive relatives and friends at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Saturday, May 12, 2018 from 1:00 \endash 1:45 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will follow in the Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 p.m. Immediately following the service, everyone is invited to a reception in the funeral home's Fireside Room.

JEAN SHANTZ was a beloved and superlative language teacher at several Ontario high schools, most notably in Kitchener where she taught Latin to a thousands of admiring students. She was a legend at Eastwood Collegiate Institute from 1956 until she retired in the mid 1970s.

Her pedagogy was impeccable and highly practical. She drilled students daily until they could recite declensions instinctively and recall with confidence advanced tenses such as the pluperfect indicative active. She assigned homework and expected it to be done.

Her facility in Latin was effortless and she delivered her lessons with precision, clarity and humour. She could say "nominative-genitive-dative-accusative-vocative-ablative" in one breathless and inspiring cadence.

She liked Catullus and agreed with Virgil that "...descensus Averno facilis est." A refined lady in mind and person, Miss Shantz nevertheless opined with Horace "...est modus in rebus..." and by example taught her students to be proud and modest, disciplined and demure.

She celebrated Roman history and culture and admired its luminaries. "Omnia Gallia in tres partes divsa est," pronounced Caesar and Miss Shantz passed this along to her students with a confidence that it would always be so.

She was an erudite teacher and outstanding role model for all of her students. Even those who pulled their hair out over Latin did not talk disparagingly behind her back. Her smile and her gentleness and thoughtfulness were unforgettable.

SHANTZ, Jean E.

At her residence, 140 Melrose Ave., Kitchener, on Monday, Feb. 22, 1988, after a lengthy illness. She was a member of Zion United Church., she graduated from the University of Western Ontario, in 1943 and taught secondary school in Kenora, Acton and Ingersoll, but the majority of her teaching years were spent in Kitchener. Sister of William (Bill) of Brantford, Betty (Mrs. William Woodruff) of Toronto. Also survived by two nephews, Roy Shantz and Mark Woodruff and one niece, Jean Shantz. She is predeceased by her parents. Friends may call at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. W., Kitchener, after 7 p.m., this evening (Tuesday), until noon on Thursday, when removal will be made to St. Andrew's Memorial Anglican Church, Mill Street, where the funeral service will be held, at 2: 30 p.m., with Rev. WOODRUFF, Elizabeth "Betty" (nee Shantz) - Passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at Toronto's St. Michael's Hospital Palliative Care Unit, after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 84. Beloved wife of the late William (Bill) Woodruff, loving mother of Mark (Mina) and gran to Sarah and Thomas. Betty lived a rich and cultured life, regularly attending the Theatre, the ROM and AGO. For over 30 years she attended continuing education courses at University of Toronto and George Brown. Her early education as a librarian (University of Toronto) made her a voracious reader and she kept an impressive life list. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. A private cremation will be held at Betty's request. Memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association or The Kidney Foundation, two of the charities she supported.

It is with loving hearts and cherished memories that we share the death of Ross (Carl Roswell) Rickert. He died two days after celebrating his 95th birthday.

Loving wife of Babe (Iona Brenneman). They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in July 2019.

Cherished uncle of his many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, including his godchildren: Christine Henhoeffer, Linda Boshart, the late Linda Pfaff (2019), Steven Bingeman, Lisa Paranyi, and Bradley Bierman. Brother-in-law of Delores Brenneman. Remembered by his supportive neighbours, Gary and Mary Rellinger.

Born in Mannheim, ON, he was the son of Addison Rickert and Era Edith Cressman. Ross was the last surviving member of his family. Predeceased by his siblings Clare and Eilleen Rickert, Beatrice and Donald Jacobs, Doris and Elmer Jacobs and Borge Nielson, Walter and Doris Rickert.

Also predeceased by his brother-in-law and sisters-in-law Earl and Agnes Brenneman, Pearl and Curtis Roth, Lavern Brenneman, Fern and Delton Zehr and Leona and Lawrence Bingeman.

Ross was a skilled carpenter, a Veteran of the Second World War, an avid bowler, fisherman, solo and cribbage player and a lifelong member of St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Conestogo.

Visitation will be held at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King Street S., Waterloo on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 from 6-9pm. Funeral Service will be held at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 131 Flaxmill Dr, Conestogo ON N0B 1N0 on Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at 2pm with Pastor Joanna Miller presiding. Burial will be held in the church cemetery. Reception to follow.

MANNHEIM, April 1. - A quiet wedding was solemnized at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Addison Rickert on Saturday evening March 28 when their youngest daughter Clara Doris became the bride of Elmer John Jacob, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. George Jacob of New Dun dee. Rev. G. R. Schultz officiated.

The bride was gowned in a powder blue crepe dress with accessories to match. She was at tended by her sister, Miss Beatrice Rickert, wearing a wine colored crepe dress with accessories to match. Mr. Donald Jacob, brother of the bridegroom, was the best man. After the ceremony a wedding supper was served. Only the immediate families were present.Pastor Dick Holm officiating. Cam resided in New Hamburg and was formerly of Plattsville. He was born 83 years ago on June 14, 1922 in Plattsville, a son of the late Abiah Bingeman Shantz and the former Myra Della Cressman. Cam was a member of Plattsville United Church and was active in the Plattsville Community. He had been the village Postmaster for 27 years and prior to that was employed as a Tinsmith with Harmer Bros. Cam had served with the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 532, New Hamburg. He had been the Past President of both the Canadian and Ontario Percheron Associations. He was a master breeder, showman and judge of Percheron horses. Cam was a talented artist enjoying both drawing and copper tooling. Survived by his wife Marjorie (Brown) Shantz who he married August 18, 1943. Loving father of Judith and Bob Kobe of Bracebridge and Jane and Ross Eichler of New Hamburg. Lovingly remembered by grandchildren Jill and Peter McNair, Todd and Erin Kobe, Tracy and Jeff McClenaghan and Amy and Gary Becker. There she met her future husband Clement Couture - one of her patients recovering from being shot in the leg overseas. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating Grace's life will be held in the chapel of the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home , 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Monday, August 8, 2016 at 1 p.m. with Rev. Beloved husband to the late Marjorie McLeod (nee Edgar). Loved dad to Bill (Tracy Gowland), Kathy McLeod (Steve Edwards), Dan (Barbara), Terry McLeod and Norm (Sylvia Kuepfer); cherished grandfather to Nathan, Oedyia, Lee, Clayt, and Julia; great-grandfather to five great-grandchildren. Sadly missed by his sister Naomi Swift (Marshall).

Predeceased by his parents Norman Grieve and Viola McLeod (nee Shantz), and grandson Kirt.

Bob was a member of Knox's Galt Presbyterian Church, and former director of the North Dumfries Ploughman's Association. Bob will also be sadly missed by all his friends at Heritage Meadows.

Friends may call at the Ayr Chapel, Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, 183 Northumberland St. Ayr, on Wednesday, September 4, 2019, from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A Funeral Service to celebrate Bob's life will be held in the funeral home chapel on Thursday at 11 AM. Interment Ayr Cemetery.
