When war was declared in 1914, he was among the first Ayr men to enlist, leaving in the first month of the war for overseas, where he served with the Royal Canadian Engineers. Some 10 years later he went to work for the Department of Highways in Chatham, where he remained for 30 years. Notes:

Mrs. Elsie Maud Cornford - Mrs. Elsie Maud Cornford, one of Ayr's most respected citizens, passed away at her St. Andrew Street home on Saturday, December 21st. She was in her 85th year. Born in England, Elsie came to Canada and Ayr as an 11-year-old with her step-mother and brother. They departed England just three days after the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Over the years, Elsie took an active interest in Ayr and its people. She always had time for a chat with young and old. These chats were marked with her dry, English humour, a wink and smile. She had a simple philosophy which helped her through trying times - "Everybody's life is full of sunshine and shadows - just take it and live through it. Every day is a fresh beginning and if you allow it, every day is full of nice surprises". Elsie's Anglican commitment held steadfast throughout her life. She once told the News that she "trusts in the Lord" and then "lives dangerously one day at a time". In addition to her work with the church, she was a valued member of Ayr Women's Institute, Ayr Horticultural Society, a founding director of the Ayr Senior Citizens and for many years took an active interest in the work of the Ayr Guides and Brownies. A love of her community was demonstrated in many ways over the years but probably best expressed at an Ontario Municipal Board hearing held to review objections and support for a water and sewage system installation in Ayr. Elsie rose
at the hearing and told the presiding judge that while she was a senior on pension she fully supported the installation of the services for the betterment of Ayr, despite the financial strain it might place on her. These comments were duly noted and no doubt had a strong bearing on the judge's ruling that installation of services proceed. Predeceased by her husband Harold in 1968; survived by two daughters, Mrs. Reginald (Marian) Walker of Kitchener and Mrs. Ian (Kathleen) McRae of Ayr; a son John of Ayr; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be held today (Monday) at 2 p.m. at the Wm. Kipp Funeral Home, Paris. Rev Robert Birtch of Trinity Anglican Church, Galt, will officiate. Interment in Ayr Cemetery.
