John M. Brubacher, "the eldest son of John W. Brubacher, was born April 10th, 1828. He is a farmer and resides in Wellesley Township, near Wallenstein P.O. He was first married to Barbara B. Brubacher, and after her death to Barbara Steiner. With the first wife there were seven children, namely: Elizabeth, Jacob, Catharine (dead) Abraham (dead), Levi, Magdalena, and Veronica; and with second wife there are eight children, namely: Nancy, Mary, David, Barbara, Amos (dead), Henry, Benjamin, and Lydia."

HAD MANY DESCENDANTS PIONEER LAID TO REST.

The funeral of the late John M. Brubacher of near St. Jacob, was beld on Monday and was very largely attended. It was held from the residence of the deceased's son-in-law, David Sauder, near Elmira.

The late Mr. Brubacher was 81 years old and is survived by 69 grand children and seven great grand children.

ST. JACOBS, Jan. 15. Mrs. Elizabeth Sauder, widow of the late August Sauder, formerly of St. Jacobs, died late last night at the home of her son Jacob, 1½ miles west of Hawkesville. She was 93 years of age on Jan. 4.

Surviving are two sons, Jacob and Benjamin of St. Jacobs; three daughters, Mrs. Ezra A. (Judith) Martin, Mrs. Emerson (Barbara) Martin and Elizabeth at home. Also surviving are five sisters and two brothers.

Funeral service will be held on Friday morning at nine o'clock from the residence to Conestogo Mennonite Church, near Three Bridges for service and interment.

MRS. NANCY MARTIN

Mrs. Nancy Martin, 85, died Wednesday, May 20, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Amos C. Martin, R.R. 3, Wallenstein.

Mrs. Martin was born October 25, 1867. near New Hamburg, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Brubacher. She was a member of Hawkesville Mennonite Church. Her husband, Menno. predeceased her 25 years ago.

Surviving are two sons, Enos and Menno, of near Elmira; four daughters, Mrs. Jessie (Rebecca) Bauman, Mrs. Amos (Lovina) Martin, Mrs. Norman (Lydia) Martin, all of near Elmira, and Mrs. Amos (Hannah) Martin of near Waterloo: two brothers, Ben and Henry. of near Elmira; three sisters, Mrs. Christian Frey, Wallenstein; Mrs. David Sauder, of near St. Jacobs and Mrs. Magdelina Snyder. Preston; 25 grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren. One son and three daughters predeceased her.

The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor until Friday at 9 a.m. when removal was made to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Amos C. Martin. The funeral was held there Saturday at 1:30 pm., thence to Hawkesville Mennonite Church for further service. Burial was in South Peel Mennonite Cemetery. Rev. Paul Martin officiated.

Henry S. Brubacher, 86 of Floradale, formerly of Elmira, died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry W. Bauman, after a lengthy illness.

Born in Wellesley Township, Nov. 30, 1876, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Brubacher. His wife, the former Hannah Shantz, to whom he was married Nov. 2, 1902, survives.

Also surviving are six sons, Amos of Minden, Tobias, Ira and Irvine, all of RR 2, Wallenstein and Elmer and Emerson, both of Elmira; three daughters Mrs. Henry W. (Rebecca) Bauman of Floradale, Mrs. Edwin (Sarah) Buehler of RR 1, Elmira, and Mrs. Thomas (Elvina) Martin of Copper Cliff; one sister, Mrs. Christian (Lydia) Frey of RR 1, Wallenstein; 34 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. One daughter, Lydian, predeceased him in 1916.

The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, Elmira, until Tuesday at 9 a.m. when removal was made to the home of his son, Emerson, for a service at 2 p.m. daylight saving time, then to Elmira Mennonite Meeting House for a funeral service. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

Mr. Benjamin B. (Ben) Brubacher age 82 died on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at the home of his daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ezra H. Frey, Hawkesville after a short illness. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Brubacher and was born in Wellesley, township, Aug. 9, 1879. He farmed near Elmira until he retired in 1956. His wife the former Anna Diefenbecker, predeceased him Nov. 7, 1957. He was a member of the Elmira Mennonite Church. Surviving are four daughters: Mrs. Noah (Emma) Martin RR 1, Wallenstein, Mrs. Ezra H. (Ada) Frey HawkesvIlle, Mrs. John M. (Melissa) Martin of Hawkesville, Mrs. Samuel G. MRS.EMERSON MARTIN

St. Jacobs Mrs. Emerson Martin died today at her home near St. Jacobs after a brief illness. She was 82. The former Barbara Sauder, she was born Feb. 5, 1888 in Wellesley Township, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. August Sauder. She was married in 1911 to Emerson Martin who predeceased her in 1961. She and her husband had operated a greenhouse and market garden near St. Jacobs for many years. She was predeceased by an infant son, and another son Edwin in 1965, also by four brothers and a sister. Surviving are five sons, Ivan of RR 1, Whitby, Howard of RR 1, Preston, Sylvester of Linwood, Aden of St. Jacobs, Henry of RR1 1, Waterloo; three daughters, Mrs. Enos (Elizabeth) Gingrich of RR 4, Elmira, Mrs. Norman (Lovina) Brubacher of RR 1, West Montrose, Mrs. Stanley (Ada) Valenta of RR 1, Waterloo; one brother Benjamin and a sister, Elizabeth, both of Elmira; 37 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. The body will be at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until Monday evening. A family service will be conducted Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the residence followed by a memorial service at Martin's Mennonite Meeting House, where she had been a member. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

On Wednesday, Aug. 13, 1980, at the home of her nephew, Mr. Enoch Sauder of 43 Spring St., St. Jacobs, aged 88 years.

She was the last surviving member of the late August Sauder family.

Surviving are a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by five brothers and two sisters.

Friends may call at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Sauder, after 4 p.m. today.

Funeral service on Friday, Aug. 15, from the home at 9 a.m. daylight savings time.

Removal will then be made to the Conestogo Mennonite Meeting House, for further service and burial in the adjoining cemetery.

He was a member of Elmira Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held on May 25, in charge of Vernon Leis and Simon Martin; interment in St. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery.

On Monday, May 22, 1978, at the home of his daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Wagler of Route 2, Atwood, in his 80^th year, of Elmira. Father of Wesley of St. Jacobs, Stanley of Kitchener, Harvey of Cambridge (H), Mrs. Alvin (Mariam) Wagler of Route 2, Atwood, Mrs. Delton (Joanna) Holst of Route 2, New Hamburg, Mahlon of Kincardine, Maurice of Route 2, Wellesley; grand children and six great-grandchildren, also survive. He married Rosanna Martin and she predeceased him in 1960. He married Susanna Martin and she predeceased him in 1971. Brother of Elizabeth Sauder of Elmira. He was the son of the late August Sauder and Elizabeth Brubacher. Mrs. Eli Bauman, age 56, died suddenly on Friday, April 28, at her home on the fourth concession of Peel. Deceased was born near Dorking.

Elmira - Mrs. Menno Reist, 41, died suddenly July 5 of pneumonia at the Ontario Hospital, Hamilton. She was born in Woolwich Township on Feb. 21, 1898, a daughter of Mrs. David Sauder and the late Mr. Sauder. She was married 14 years ago. Besides her husband there survive a daughter, Wilma, six brothers, Menno Sauder of R.R. 2, Elmira, Eli of St. Jacobs, David of Breslau, Henry of St. Jacobs, John of Hawkesville and Tilman Sauder, two sisters, Mrs. Enoch Martin of St. Jacobs and Mrs. Menno Bowman of Hawkesville. Three children predeceased her. The funeral services were held on Friday followed by services at St. James' Lutheran church. Burial in Three Bridges Mennonite Cemetery. Rev. L. H. Veronica Sauder, near St. Jacobs, died early this morning in the Elmira Private Hospital, after an illness of two years.

She was 33 years old.

Surviving are her mother, Mrs. David Sauder, near St. Jacobs, six brothers, John and Menno of Elmira, David of Bloomingdale, Eli of Three Bridges, Henry and Tillman at home, and three sisters, Mrs. Menno Bauman, Hawkesville, Mrs. Enoch Martin, Heidelberg, and Mrs. Menno Reist of Hamilton.

The funeral will be held Friday morning at nine o'clock from the family residence north of St. Jacobs to the Conestogo Mennonite church.

Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Rev. Jesse Bowman will officiate.

Martin.-John, son of Menno and Nancy Martin, was born near Elmira, Ont., Jan. 6, 1896; died Sept. 18, 1926; aged 30 y. 8 m. 12 d. On Dec. 14, 1921, he was united in marriage to Ida Bauman who survives him. Thus he leaves a loving companion, 2 brothers, 5 sisters, and a wide circle of relatives and friends to mourn his early departure. He was an employee of the Elmira Public Utilities Commission since Oct. 1922, and it was while engaged at this work, that he accidently came in contact with a live wire, which caused his immediate death. Little did he think that perhaps when he climbed the pole to make a few adjustments that in a few moments he would be let down by a rope, as one who made the change in the twinkling of an eye. One hand was severely burned and also three fingers of the other hand. The sad news came as a heartfelt shock to those who knew him best. He was well known throughout the whole community, and was possessed with a cheery disposition, always ready with a kind word and a smile. He was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church and was very much interested in the work of the Lord. It was his earnest desire to be a bright and shining light in this world. Funeral services were held on Sept. 22 at the Elmira Mennonite Church, and at the Old Order Mennonite Church which was nearby. Both houses being filled to their capacity. Services were conducted by Bro. A. B. Gingerinch and Bro. O. D. Snider at the one church, while at the same time Bro. Moses Brubaker and Bro. Jess B. MRS ENOCH WIDEMAN

Mrs. Enoch Wideman, 86, died at her residence In Hawkesville last Wednesday following a lengthy illness.

Born in 1870, she was the former Hanna Brubacher, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elias Brubacher. She was a member of South Peel Mennonite Church. Surviving are her husband, four sons, Josiah and Melvin, both of RR 3, Wallenstein, Ezra of RR 1, Waterloo; Owen of Hawkesville; three daughters, Mrs. Daniel (Amanda) Brubacher of Hawkesville, Mrs. Owen (Martha) Martin of RR 3, Wallenstein, Mrs. Moses (Barbara) Bauman of RR 1, Wallenstein, three brothers, five sisters and 42 grandchildren.

The body rested at Dreisinger Funeral Parlor until Thursday morning when removal was made to the residence where service was held Friday at 9 a.m. followed by a service at South Peel Mennonite meeting house. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery.

Auctioneer Brubacher dies at 80


A B Brubacher, a long-time auctioneer. died early today at his home at 32 Peltz Ave., Kitchener He was 80.

Born on a farm two miles west of St Jacobs, Brubacher still handled some auctions at the A B Brubacher Furniture Auction Centre 327 Breithaupt St.. at age 75. He sold the centre in the late 1960s.

He farmed north of Elmira and at Bridgeport until he was 44.

Brubacher handled auctions from Petrolia to Peterborough and as far north as Wiarton. Occasionally he sold livestock in New York and Pennsylvania.

BRUBACHER, A. B. (Abraham) - At his home. 32 Peltz Ave.. Kitchener, on Wednesday. April 19, 1978. suddenly following a heart attack, Abraham B. Brubacher. age 80 years.

Mr. Brubacher was born near Wallenstein, a son of the late Elias Brubacher and the former Mary Brubacher. A member of the Breslau Mennonite Church.

Mr. Brubacher founded Brubacher Brothers Limited Livestock Sales now operated by his sons, Angus (Mike) and Raymond. He was a member of the Holstein Friesen Association of Canada. He began his career as a Holstein exporter in 1928. He founded the Brubacher Auction Centre which began in the old market building in 1942. He continued until his retirement in 1975. He specialized in livestock, farm and household sales. The auction centre, still in operation, is now located on Breithaupt Street.

He is survived by his wife, the former Lizzie Brox, by his two daughters, Edna (Mrs. Robert McKeon) of Kitchener and Gladys (Mrs. Mervin Roth) of Waterloo and by his three sons, Irvin B., of Route 21, Cambridge (H), Angus (Mike) of Kitchener and Raymond of Route 7, Guelph; by his brother, Dilman of St. Jacobs and his three sisters, Veronica (Mrs. Isaiah Eby) of Elmira, Lydia, Mrs. Henry Sauder and Magdalena (Mrs. Israel Kraemer), both of St. Jacobs; 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive. He was predeceased by a daughter, Mrs. Alice Wilson, and by two sisters and two brothers. Friends may call at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. W., Kitchener, after noon on Thursday, until noon on Saturday, when removal will be made to Breslau Mennonite Church for service at 2:30 p.m., with Rev. Dennis Cressman officiating. Interment in the adjoining cemetery. Donations to the Mennonite Central Committee may be made as expressions of sympathy. Aaron B. Martin of 48 Church St., Elmira died last Thursday at K-W Hospital Kitchener after a lengthy illness. He was 70.

Born May 11, 1898 in Peel Township he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Elias Martin and had lived in Elmira for 40[?] years. He operated a machine shop and was a member of Elmira Mennonite Church. Mr. Martin was also a Sunday school teacher and deacon of the church for 35 years.

Surviving are his wife the former Ada Martin, three son, Clayton, Henry and Paul, all of Elmira, four daughters, Mrs. Lewis (Erma) Snider of St. Jacobs, Mrs. Harvey (Alice) Martin of Floradale, Mrs. Donald (Carol) Denstadt of Elmira and Mrs. Clare[?] (Sharon) Wideman of RR 2, Drayton, three brothers, Nathan of Kitchener, Jesse of Niagara Falls, N.Y. and Israel of Cincinnati, Ohio, three sisters, Mrs. Alvin (Elizabeth) Martin of RR 2, Drayton, Matilda Martin of Hamilton and Mrs. Urias (Susanna) Martin of Atwood and 18 grandchildren. He was predeceased by one brother and one sister.

The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor Elmira until removal was made on Saturday afternoon to Elmira Mennonite Church where Rev. Vernon Leis conducted the service. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery.

Frey in his 93rd year, formerly of St. Jacobs.Beloved husband of the late Selina (Martin) Frey (October 12, 2002). Loving and respected father of David and Cheryl Frey of St. Jacobs, Seleda and John Frey of Moorefield, Clare and Margaret Frey of RR 2, Elmira, Marvin and Ardith Frey of Kitchener, Aden and Sheryl Frey of Millbank, Miriam Frey of Waterloo, Barbara and Roy Draper of Elmira, Mary and Orval Martin of RR 2, Wallenstien. Lovingly remembered by his 21 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Dear brother of Henry and Mary Ann Frey of Mount Forest, Barbara Weber of Wallenstein, Magdalena Martin of St. Clements. Predeceased by his parents, Christian and Lydia (Brubacher) Frey, two daughters, Susannah and Irene; one son, Lorne; two granddaughters, Becky and Julie; five brothers, Amos, Isaac, Menno, David and Christian; two sisters, Sarah Martin and Nancy Wideman.Martin ran his own business, Frey's Hatchery, in St. Jacobs from its beginning in 1946 until he retired in 1978. He was involved in the church and community, serving on the local school board, teaching Singing School and serving with the Elmira and District Association for Community Living. After his retirement, he and his wife spent nine years as missionaries with Northern Light Gospel Mission (Now Impact North Ministries). Martin was a great outdoorsman and enjoyed his years at Stormer Lake.The family will receive their friends and relatives at the Floradale Mennonite Church, 22 Florapine Road, Floradale on Monday (today) from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at the Floradale Mennonite Church on Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Fred Redekop officiating. The casket will remain open in the church until 1: 45 p.m. Private interment in Floradale Mennonite Cemetery.In his memory, donations to Grand River Hospital Foundation (Dialysis Unit) would be appreciated by the family as expressions of sympathy. St. Jacobs - Noah F Sauder of St. Jacobs died at his home Monday after a brief illness. He was 63. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John B. Sauder, he was born in St. Jacobs, June 25, 1907. He was a life-long resident of St. Jacobs and was a member of the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church. He is survived by his wife, the former Hannah Lichty; two sons, Ronald and Richard, both of St. Jacobs; three daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Rita) Cressman of RR1, Waterloo, and Arlene and Pauline, both of St. Jacobs; two sisters, Mrs. Leander Lichty of Gorrie and Malinda of Elmira; one grandchild; his stepfather, Eli Gingrich of Floradale and one stepsister, Mrs. Urias B. Weber of RR 3, Wallenstein, He was predeceased by one daughter and three brothers. The body will be at the Dreisinger Fuenral Home, Elmira, until noon Thursday when removal will be made to St. Jacobs Mennonite Church where Rev. Of Gorrie, was born at St. Jacobs on January 14, 1910, passed away August 11 at Wingham and District Hospital, aged 65 years.

She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John B. Sauder.

She was married to Leander Lichty on January 22, 1935.

Also surviving besides her husband, one daughter Verna at home; three sons, Mervin, Route 1, Waterloo, Laverne of Elmira, Leonard of Fergus; five grandchildren; two sisters, Malinda of Elmira, Mrs. Urias Weber (Edna) of Wallenstein; predeceased by her parents, four brothers, one son and one daughter.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 13 at 1 p.m. at her home in Gorrie with further services to follow and burial at Peel Mennonite Church, Highway 86, Wallenstein.

Sauder. - Emanuel, son of John B. and Christina (Frey) Sauder, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Nov. 25, 1911; on Feb. 29, 1928 he accompanied a group of boys on a rabbit hunt, and accidently received a gunshot wound inflicted by his own gun of which one barrel missed fire. This was unknown to Him because of the report of the other guns. Having wounded his game, and thinking his gun empty he used the stock of his gun to bat his game in order to claim it. When in this act the gun discharged, lacerating the under side of his right arm from wrist to elbow. He was taken to Kitchener and Waterloo Hospital, where every possible attention was given. However, blood poison set in and lock-jaw developed, causing intense pain which He bore patiently to his end. He expressed his willingness to depart from this world. The end came on Mar. 11, 1928, at the age of 16 y. 3 m. 15 d. His mother preceded him three and one-half months, also twin brothers in 1915. He leaves to mourn his early departure, father, 1 brother, 2 sisters, 1 grandmother, 2 grandfathers and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted by Urias Martin and Israel Weber, at the house and at the Conestoga River Church. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

EMANUEL SAUDER

We are sorry to report the death of Emanuel, the second son of Mr. John B. Sauder, in the K-W Hospital on Sunday afternoon last, at the early age of 16 years.

He was admitted to the hospital about 2 weeks ago with a badly lacerated right arm the result of an unfortunate gun-shot wound, while with a party of rabbit hunters near Crosshill.

For a few days recovery seemed quite probable but tetanus, or lock-haw, developed and nothing could be done to check the progress of the malady.

He is survived by his father, one brother and two sisters.

His mother predeceased him about 3 months ago.

The funeral was held from his late home on Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock to Conestogo River church and cemetery for service and interment.

Mr. Sauder and family have the sympathy of the community and large circle of acquaintances in this their second bereavement in such a short time.

Henry S. Martin was born Feb 3, 1926, in St. Jacobs to Emerson and Barbara (Sauder) Martin and passed away peacefully at Barnswallow Place, Elmira, on Sunday, June 20, 2021.

He is dearly missed by Eileen (Diller Baker) his spouse of 12 plus years. He was predeceased by his former spouse Mary (Bauman 1928-2007) of 58 years.

Henry and Mary had seven children: Judith, Lois (John) Yutzy, Anne (Verton) Miller, Gerald (Verna), John (Ladina), Andy (Colleen) and Cam (Althea-Lisa) and two stepchildren, James (Irene) Baker and Stephen Baker. He will be missed by 22 grandchildren: Justin (Sandra) Yutzy, Jordan (Melody) Yutzy, June (Daryl) Swartzentruber, Jerald (Liana) Miller, James Miller, Caleb (Joanne) Miller, Bethany Miller, Kerry (Heidi), Devon (Julia), Shannon (Gavin) Shantz, Jessica (Rod) Bauman, Kenton (Tricia), Brianna, Janine (Jeremy) Stutzman, Jesse (Bessie), Jed (Sheri), Jerry (Amanda), Brendon, Janna, Sonya (Noah Steinmann), Tristan, Malia and two step-grandchildren, Angela (Corey) Hoffman and Laurah Baker along with 30 great-grandchildren.

Predeceased by his two grandchildren Sheila Martin and Jonathan Miller.

Survived by his sister Ada (Stan) Valenta and sister-in-law Joanne Bauman.

In 2006 Henry retired and moved to Elmira. He was widely known as "Greenhouse Henry" as the owner of a greenhouse and market gardening business in St. Jacobs for some 45 years on a second-generation farm. He was organically inclined and health conscious many years before it became mainstream. For some 27 years dad was a conscientious school bus driver around the region. Dad was a founding and committed member of (Heidelberg) Countryside Mennonite Fellowship and actively involved in song leading for decades.

A drive past visitation will take place on Thursday, June 24, 2021 from 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Countryside Mennonite Fellowship, 3745 Herrgott Rd, Hawkesville. Please remain in your vehicle and follow the directions of the attendant. A private family graveside service will be held at Hillside Cemetery on Friday, June 25, 2021.
