Roth. Lavina (Hostetler) Roth died at her home in New Hamburg, Ont., on Sunday, April 24, 1927; aged 53 y. 8 m. 17 d., death being due to an attack of the heart. She seemed to be in her usual good health and had spent a pleasant afternoon with some friends who had called at her home. When about to prepare the evening meal, however, she very suddenly collapsed, becoming unconscious immediately, and in a few minutes her soul was in eternity. Her death came as a great shock to the family, and mother will be greatly missed. Her cheery face and her kindly counsels we can never forget, and we hope to meet her in heaven some day, where no farewell will ever be spoken. On March 15, 1892, she was united in marriage to Bro. Rudolph Roth. She leaves her sorrowing husband, four sons (Arthur, Harry, Moses, and Wilfrid) and two daughters (Elizabeth and Lavina), also four brothers, an aged step-mother and many other relatives and friends. The funeral services were conducted on April 28, at the home by Bro. Isaiah Cressman and at the Biehn Mennonite Church (of which she had been a loyal member for over twenty years) by Brethren Jonas Snider and Moses Shantz. Texts, Phil. 3: 20 and Psa. 116: 15. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

    Milo Shantz

    From The Waterloo Way Wiki

Milo Shantz was born in the New Hamburg, Ontario in 1932 and was raised by hard working, industrious Mennonite parents. From a young age, Shantz showed a entrepreneurial spirit and willingness to take risk. At the age of 13, he started buying and selling pigs, and at the age of 21, along with a partner, bought 500 commercial meat turkeys. By 1958, he had made it a family business with his father and brother, and involved employees as shareholders. Shantz' early involvement in the poultry business led to the development of Hybrid Turkeys in 1970, with which he was actively involved with until 1981 when the company was sold to British Petroleum. Today, the company is one of the two major turkey breeding companies worldwide with 14 farms, two hatcheries and affiliate operations in Brazil, Hungary and Ireland.

In 1975, Shantz had a local investment in Hoffman Meats Ltd., buying the Hog Processing company along with Don Martin and Mark Hoffman as partners. The company was later sold to Gainers Inc., a meat packing conglomerate.

Soon in 1981, Milo Shantz founded the Mercedes Corporation, while the village was in somewhat of a state of disrepair. Shantz' interest in the village of St. Jacobs began with the opening of the Stone Crock Restaurant which was a former Zehrs. In the following twenty-five years, Shantz' involvements, through various companies and shareholder groups, have been extensive. The most notable of these include the St. Jacobs and Waterloo Farmers' Markets, the Ontario Livestock Exchange, the St. Jacobs Outlet Mall, a number of rental properties, and six long-term care homes for the elderly. Shantz vision has put St. Jacobs on the international tourism map. People were streaming to St. Jacobs to learn about Old Order Mennonites and to learn more about their beliefs and theology. The more visitors who flocked in, the more opportunity there clearly was for re-adaptive use of old structures, redevelopment, and turning St. Jacobs into a countryside destination. By 1988, Mercedes Corporation and Stone Crock Inc., owned 17 of the 36 commercial properties in or around St. Jacobs. Mercedes with real estate assets of $27 million, had revenues of $16.4 million.

Then in 1997 Mercedes was sold to Consolidated Properties, a publicly-traded company on the Toronto Stock Exchange for $11.5 million. Milo Shantz served as chairman of Consolidated on the board of Directors to have control over the operations of Mercedes.
In 2001, Mercedes Holdings Corp., a newly-incorporated business owned by a group of investors that includes Milo Shantz and his brother Ross Shantz bought Mercedes Corporation for $10.2 million dollars and return the company to private ownership. Mercedes states this will put it in a better position to develop its tourist properties and nursing home business.

    Milo Shantz passes away

ST JACOBS - The man credited with converting St Jacobs into an international tourist destination has passed away.
Milo Shantz,76, who along with his brother Ross, spearheaded a number of developments in the village, was born in the New Hamburg area in 1932. The brothers worked together for decades, notably with Hybrid Turkeys, a Kitchener-based turkey breeding business that became a world leader by the time it was sold to Hendrix Genetics in 1981.

Shantz opened the Stone Crock restaurant in downtown St Jacobs in 1975 at a time when the area was in severe economic decline. Many credit that restaurant for starting a rebirth in St Jacobs.

Shantz started Mercedes Corp. in 1981. That company drove development in St. Jacobs and eventually acquired a number of properties in the area. It owns the St. Jacobs Farmers Market, Waterloo Farmers Market, Ontario Livestock Exchange, St. Jacobs Factory Outlet Mall, St. Jacobs stockyards as well as seven other rental and retail properties in the village. Mercedes also owns retirement homes in the region as well as several other cities.

An official with Mercedes confirmed that Shantz passed away, but did not offer any other details. Shantz had been battling cancer for some time, his friends said.

Although best known for his business successes, Shantz was also a large supporter of Habitat for Humanity. He played a key role in establishing the charity in Canada and was instrumental in arranging a visit where former U.S. President Jimmy Carter came to Canada to promote a local Habitat project in 1993.

Shantz, raised by Mennonite parents, was also known for his belief in sharing his successes with employees. He offered to allow his employees to buy into his businesses. He often said his goal in creating a destination in St. Jacobs was not meant to exploit area old order Mennonites but to create an attraction that promoted local artisans and merchants.
