He spent the last 20 years in Calgary. He gave his heart to God early in life and was faithful to the end, living a consistent and useful life. He always enjoyed conversing on things of God, ready always to lend a helping hand whenever opportunity afforded it. He was one of the charter members of the Mount View Mennonite congregation near Aldersyde. The last year of his life being mostly confined to his home, he expressed himself ready and anxious to go. Three daughters and 1 son preceded him in death (Martha, Mary, Clara, and Aaron). He leaves his beloved wife and daughter (Esther), 4 sons (Harvey and Archibald of Calgary, Edgar of Aldersyde, and John Henry of Arizona), 1 brother (Menno of Blackie, Alta.), 1 brother and sister of Elmira, Ont., and a large number of relatives and friends to mourn his departure. Bricker: Mennonite pioneer and church builder of the Mount View Mennonite Church near High River, was born 28 April 1853 at Hawksville, Ontario, and died in Calgary on 13 January 1939. He married Catharina Snyder (3 October 1854-19 February 1944) in 1874. They were the parents of five sons and four daughters.

The Brickers were among the first Mennonite settlers in what became the province of Alberta. Elias and his father first came west from Ontario on a homesteader's excursion sponsored by the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1889. The family moved in 1891, establishing their farmstead near the line of a new railway being built from Calgary south to Fort MacLeod, between Okotoks and High River. Other prospective Mennonite pioneers soon followed.

The Brickers were eager to see new Mennonite congregations organized among the new settlers. With Elias Bricker's encouragement, the Mennonite Conference of Ontario sent S. F. Coffman west in 1901. Coffman lived with the Brickers when meeting with the settlers in the High River area, and the Brickers became charter members and wholehearted supporters of the Mount View Mennonite Church when it was organized late in 1901.

Elias Bricker also served as one of the early local postmasters, but moved to Calgary in 1918. There he became active in distributing tracts and religious literature to the homes of Calgary residents, trying to contact every household in the city at least once.

During the last years of his life Elias Bricker suffered much as a result of ill health, and was mostly confined to his home. He died at the age of 85 years and is remembered as a pioneer homesteader/farmer and as a church builder and supporter.

    ______________________________

The sad intelligence of the death of Miss Clara Bricker on Monday last of typhoid pneumonia cast a pall over the town and among the people of Norma, where the young lady was well known, the news came as a shock. About a fortnight ago the deceased was stricken with typhoid pneumonia and from the outset the case was considered serious but it was fondly hoped that she would rally. She suffered greatly and on Monday at 1 o'clock her spirit passed beyond the shadows. The deceased was a bright young lady and had a large circle of admiring friends who sincerely mourn the departure of a good friend and companion. A sad circumstance in connection with her untimely and is the fact that arrangements had been made complete for her marriage in June next to Mr. Luther Hicks of this town, who is grief stricken at the loss of his affianced. She was the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Bricker of Norma, and was in her 26th year. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, from the home of Mr. Dewey to Mount Pleasant Cemetery and was followed to the grave by a large concourse of people, who paid the last respects to the dead. The sympathy of the people generally is extended to the bereaved parents and relatives in their sore bereavement
