Her death was a shock to the community, nevertheless we mourn not as those who have no hope. She was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church till death. The Floradale congregation, of which she was a member, will miss her greatly. Bro. Bauman and family need our sympathy and prayers. Funeral services were conducted on Mar. 9, at the Elmira Mennonite Church and her body was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. Bros. Abram Gingerich and Oliver Snider preached. Texts, Luke 13: 4; Isa. 3: 10.

    Notes:

"Eldon D. Weber, President of OGS, 1975-1977, died on 26 February 2004 at the age of 90. He was born in Berlin, Ontario, in 1913, the son of Ephraim Weber and Maria Steckle, and remained proud of his connection with both these pioneer Waterloo County families. He was a longtime member of the Pennsylvania-German Folklore Society, and was present at the PGFS meeting when OGS was founded. He became active provincially at an early stage, serving as a provincial director 1970-1971, and as vice-president before becoming president.

Among his undertakings at the provincial level was a projected series of county-wide gravestone readings, Monumental Transcriptions (1977). Unfortunately, only the first volume, concerning Simcoe County, was published. He chaired Seminar 1976, held in Waterloo. OGS awarded him an honorary life membership in 1984.

Throughout the 1970s he was also active locally, helping to found Waterloo-Wellington branch in 1973, editing its newsletter for many years and serving as chair 1978-1982. Access to two ledgers of 1870s Waterloo County births and deaths led him to publish them, many years before the Registrar-General officially released the information to the public.

As well as genealogies of the Weber and Steckle families, his greatest contribution to family history in Ontario was in the republication of Ezra Eby's Biographical History of Waterloo Township (1895) in 1971. He combined the original volumes and the 1931 supplement with maps and other new material and, most usefully, an every-name index. This publication, referred to locally simply as 'The Eby Book', is the first port of call for Waterloo County genealogists. It had become a rare book, but the Weber edition is available in libraries across North America.

His reputation in the community meant that many Mennonite families deposited copies of documents with him. His papers are now at Conrad Grebel College, University of Waterloo.

In addition to his genealogical work, Eldon was active in the United Church of Canada, both locally in Kitchener-Waterloo and at conference level. The KW Council of Churches named him Layman of the Year in 1969. He also served on the board of the KW Humane Society for almost forty years from 1944.

Following his retirement from active committee work, his second marriage to Helen Merner gave his old age a new outlook and much happiness."

Kitchener The man credited with helping to launch the first municipal blue box recycling program has died. Nyle Ludolph - known to many as the Father of the Blue Box - was 84.

In the early 1980s, the Kitchener man was working for Laidlaw Waste Systems, which was contracted to collect the city's garbage. A few years earlier, he'd been asked to speak to students about the need to recycle and reduce waste. But the words felt hollow - recycling and reducing waste wasn't his company's business. He left the talk feeling like a hypocrite, he'd later recall. And he pledged to do something about it. For a year, Ludolph did his best to reduce his own family's waste. For that year, they only put out six bags of trash. Ludolph convinced his employer to get into recycling. In 1981, Laidlaw launched a pilot project with Resource Integration Systems in the neighbourhood around the Kitchener Auditorium. Some of the homes received what would become a ubiquitous blue plastic box to place their recyclables in.

The blue box was a hit, and the program was rolled out city-wide in 1983. Ludolph would go on to champion the program around Ontario. "He was very proud of it," said Doug Ludolph, one of Nyle's three children. "He thought the world of recycling ... He never thought it would become as big as it is." From its humble beginnings, the blue box has found a home in countries around the world. "I think Nyle saw something in the future that many other people had overlooked, and that was the need to look after our planet and the environment," Kitchener Mayor Carl Zehr said. "He had the foresight to change people's way of living when it comes to recycling and dealing with waste."

The blue box program gave recycling credibility - and an efficiency - that it previously lacked, added Regional Chair Ken Seiling. "We became sort of a leader in terms of how to encourage people to recycle," he said. "It was visible … it was easy to do." Away from the world of recycling, Nyle Ludolph was a kind and generous man, his son said. He didn't hide the fact he battled a drinking problem in his younger days, and Nyle remained active in Alcoholics Anonymous for decades. "He'd go to meetings all the time, and anybody who needed help, he'd talk to," Doug said. "We miss him a lot and we love him," he said. "They're big shoes to fill." A memorial servicce will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Erb & Good funeral home on King Street South in Waterloo.
