Relates Danger Of Collision by Planes at Target

A veteran of 34 operational trips over German territory, WO. John Zarzycki, son of Mrs. Annie Zarzycki 88 Strange St., has returned to his Kitchener home "mighty glad it is all over."

The young airman, who also served as an air gunner with an R.A.F. squadron, modestly relates that he had several close calls, but that "I belonged to one of those plane crews which managed to come back from every operation on four engines."

WO. Zarzycki explained what he thought was his "narrowest escape" last February during the Canadian attack on Cleve, near the German- Holland border. He said that his squadron was bombing at 4,000 feet in support of the Canadian 1st Army attack.
"I was mid-upper gunner on a Lancaster on that trip, when a piece of flak came through the side of the turret and up through the top, missing me by a matter of inches, I don't mind admitting I was plenty scared," he said.

The air gunner made known the fact that the one of the most dangerous of all hazards for bombing planes over a target, is the risk of running into each other.

"The aircraft just crowd in on the target and the rest of the crew constantly keep telling the 'skipper' just how close other planes of our own come. The pilot keeps diving and maneouvring to escape collision at such times," he continued.

WO. Zarzycki said he didn't get an opportunity to be on a Berlin bombing mission, stating that while his squadron was hitting targets in the Ruhr the German capital was the focal point for Mosquito bomber attacks.

He said that the Ruhr industrial targets of Essen, Dortmund, Cologne, Duesseldorf and others were heavily defended by anti-aircraft fire and that on one occasion his aircraft came home with 17 flak holes. One of these saw a piece of flak enter the pilot's compartment, narrowly missing the "skipper" as it came through the floor.

Among his operational trips were three to Dresden and Stettin, each of these journeys requiring ten hours for the round trip.

WO Zarzycki is unsure what his future plans will be at the expiration of 30 days leave. His leave has been made more enjoyable by the arrival of his brother, Pte. William, from Western Canada, for a family reunion.
