    Eby.-Jacob W. Eby was born Oct. 16, 1851, in Canada. In his early youth he came to St. Joseph Co., Ind., with his parents who settled on the farm which has since then been his home. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Wenger Sept. 16, 1872. She preceded him in death Feb. 21, 1896. To this union were born three daughters and five sons. He is survived by two daughters,(Mrs. John Eby and Mrs. Sam Hunsberger), and 5 sons (Walter, Jacob, Mervyn, Ralph, and Ira). All of them are living within a few miles of the old home place. He also had two brothers living. He had many other relatives besides a host of friends. In the winter of 1910 he confessed Christ and united with the Mennonite Church and the Olive congregation. During the last year or more he was afflicted in such a way that at times he was robbed of his mental powers. Sometimes his affliction was much worse than at others and during one of these periods he took his own life, Sept. 14, 1918; age 66 y. 10 m. 28 d. Funeral at the Olive Church, Sept. 16, conducted by C. A. Shank and D. A. Yoder.

    Jacob B. Eby, Osceola, Ind. Our subject is one of the solid and prosperous farmers of Penn township a good citizen and a descendant of good old Pennsylvania Dutch stock (see sketch of Jacob Eby). He was born on his father's farm, near Waterloo, Canada, October 12, 1851, was brought up on the farm and came with his father to St. Joseph county in 1861, on the 4th of March, being then ten years of age. He attended the common schools of the district and married, September 16, 1872. Elizabeth Wenger, born July 5, 1857, daughter of Henry and Margaret (Wanner) Wenger. Henry Wenger was born in Lancaster county, Penn., was a Mennonite in religion and the father of twelve children, as follows: Samuel, Maria (who died young), Ann, Elizabeth, Susannah, Daniel, Henry, Abraham, David, Mattie, Mary and Margaret. Mr. Wenger settled in Ohio at an early day, in Stark county, none of his children, except Samuel, having been born in Pennsylvania. Later he removed to Franklin county and then to Seneca county, but about 1866 he removed to Elkhart county, Ind., and settled in Olive township on a good farm of eighty acres. He was an upright, industrious man, respected by all. He was a devoted Christian and an honored citizen. In his political faith he was a Republican. His son Samuel married Lydia Topper, is a thresher, lives in Penn township and has six children; Ann married Cyrus Eby, a farmer of Penn township, and has seven children; Elizabeth married Jacob B. Eby, a farmer of Penn township, and has eight children (Cyrus and Jacob B. Eby being brothers); Susan married Joseph Hann, a farmer of Madison township, and has five children; Daniel married Annie Holderman, is a farmer of Olive township in Elkhart county, and has three children; Henry married Elizabeth Schrock, is a farmer of Olive township and has one child: Abraham married Alice Holderman, sister to Daniel's wife, and he is a farmer of Elkhart county and has two children; David married Eva S. Loncks, is a farmer of Olive township and has one child; Mattie, yet single; Mary married Jacob H. Loncks, brother to David's wife, who is a farmer of Olive township and has two children; and Margaret married Martin Bloucker, a farmer of Olive township, and has one child. After marriage Jacob B. Eby settled on the old Eby homestead, where his father settled after he removed from Canada. Eight children of Mr. and Mrs. Eby are as follows: Mary, born December 2,1873; Margaret, born March 29, 1876; Annas, bom November 22, 1877; Walter, born June 26, 1880; Jacob W., born December 28, 1882; Mervin, born March 9, 1886; Ralph, bom August 29, 1889, and Ira Eby, born October 13, 1892. Mr. Eby is a practical farmer, who, by industry and perseverance has acquired 120 acres of land, with excellent improvements. In 1890 he built a substantial and tasteful two-story brick residence finished in hardwood, everything handy and in good style. Mr. Eby is a self-made man and has made his own way, and his accumulations are the result of honest endeavor and hard labor. Politically he is a Republican, is a man of intelligence, takes the newspapers and keeps up to the times, being well informed on the leading subjects of the day. His daughter Mary married, December 6, 1890, John W. Eby, a farmer of Madison township, and they have one son, Walter J. Eby, who was born April 28, 1891. All of the children of our subject received good educations in the district schools and Margaret attended the normal school at Valparaiso, Ind. Mr. Eby had an experience while hunting with his brothers, Seth and Cyrus, and Ensign Hummel. "They came across a doe, five miles south and one mile west of his present home. Jacob and his brother Seth raised their rifles simultaneonsly and both balls struck him and the doe fell dead. This was the last deer killed in this vicinity.

    Eby, -- Walter, son of the late Jacob and Elizabeth (Wenger) Eby, was born in St. Joseph Co., Ind., June 26, 1880; died of apoplexy on Feb. 23, 1955, after an illness of one week; aged 74 y. 8 m. 28 d. He was twice married, first to Emma J. Pletcher on Oct. 19, 1901, who died on Feb. 27, 1920; and second to Ellen Drake on Nov. 17, 1921. Four children were born to each union (Edna M., --the late Mrs. Warren Risser; Grace J.,--Mrs. Lowell Holmes of Mishawaka, Ind.; Earl L., Glenn W., and Gladys B-.-Mrs. Howard Miller, all of near Elkhart, Ind.; Arlene F., deceased; and Loren J., at home.). He is survived by his wife, 3 sons, 2 daughters, 25 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 4 brothers, and one sister (Mrs. Mary Eby, Elkhart; Jacob, Osceola, Ind.; Mervin and Ira, of Elkhart; and Ralph, Wakarusa, Ind.). Two sisters and 3 daughters preceded him in death. About the year 1927 he accepted Christ as his personal Saviour and was received into the fellowship of the Olive Mennonite Church where he was a faithful member until death. It was a time of weary waiting for him until his youngest son could complete his two years of I-W service and return home to farm the home place. After Loren was released, he took ill and passed away after only a week's sickness. Funeral services were conducted at the Olive Church by J. C. Wenger, Elno Steiner, and C. A. Shank, with burial in the South Olive Cemetery.

    Eby, Mervin, son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Wenger) Eby, was born in St. Joseph Co., Ind., Mar. 9, 1886; died at the Elkhart Nursing Home, Elkhart, Ind., Mar. 4, 1971; aged 84 y. 11 m. 23 d. On Dec. 9, 1905, he was married to Goldie Bemiller, who survives. Also surviving are 3 daughters (Vada - Mrs. Harvey Fink, Esther - Mrs. Russel Wenger, and Helen - Mrs. Irvin Grabill), 3 sons (Everett, Wayne, and Russel), 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 3 brothers (Ira, Ralph, and Jacob). He was a member of the Olive Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held Mar. 7, in charge of Richard Hostetler and Ivan Weaver; interment in the Olive Cemetery

    Eby, Ralph, was born in St. Joseph Co., Ind., Aug. 29, 1889; died at Fountainview Place Nursing Home, Elkhart, Ind., Jan. 10, 1975; aged 85 y. In 1910, he was married to Ruth Palmer, who preceded him in death in Jan. 1958. In June 1959, he was married to Florence Hartranft, who died on Dec. 4, 1974. Surviving are 2 sons (Floyd and Carl), 2 stepdaughters (Helen - Mrs. Galen Cripe, and Mary Jane - Mrs. Forrest Yoder), one stepson (Jack Hartranft), 5 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, 7 stepgrandchildren, and 3 stepgreat-grandchildren. He was a member of Olive Mennonite Church. Funeral services were held at Leinharts Funeral Home on Jan. 14, in charge of Ivan Weaver and Kent Borgaard; interment in Olive Cemetery
