Called Home

An old resident of Berlin, Mrs Eva Maria Selhaefer, was called over the river, on Monday afternoon, after a short illness Deceased was 86 years old, and had been in her usual health until Saturday last, when La Grippe set in, caused by a cold, and this illness took her away. Mrs Schaefer was born in Germany, and after immigrating to Canada, lived for a long time in Wilmot Centre. After the death of her husband, some seven years ago, she took up her residence with her son, Mr John Schaefer, Park St, Berlin, where she remained till her death. She leaves a family of four sons: William, Petersburg road; George, Plattsville; Daniel, May City, Iowa, and John, of Berlin, and one daughter, Mrs John Jacobs, Sebringville. The funeral will be held on Wednesday morning, from the residence of Mr J Schaefer, Park street, to the German Methodist church, and thenee to the Wilmot cemetery for interment.

I William Rebscher of the Village of Waterloo, Beer Brewer, (1^st) I will and desire that all my just debts, funeral and testamentary expenses be paid…

(2^nd) I give and devise unto my beloved wife Elizabeth all and as much of my house and kitchen furniture as she requires for her own use, and one cow out of my stock of her own choice which she my beloved wife shall have to herself.

(3^rd) And I give and devise to my beloved wife Elizabeth as long as she remains my widow the three northern rooms in the first story and the two northern rooms in the second story of the house I now occupy and reside in, also as much room in the washhouse cellar and stable as she requires, and a piece of ground for a garden which is not to exceed one tenth of an acre situate and being on lots number nine and ten in the west side of King Streets in the said Village of Waterloo.

(7^th) My will is that my Real Estate shall remain in the hands of my Executors, if nothing occurs that it will be necessary for them to sell sooner, until my youngest child obtains the age of twenty one years, and after youngest child has attained the said ago, and sooner if necessary, my Executors shall sell the same to the best advantage as they see fit and proper.

(8^th) My will is that my beloved children shall have the first chance to lease or purchase my real estate, and if there is any money to let my children are also to have the first chance to borrow it…

Queen to Benton Street

A few feet back of King Street and about 15 feet from South Queen Street was a vaulted cellar built of field stone by Peter Rebscher [William?] in 1838-39. In 1855 Sheriff Davidson [George Davison] bought this cellar from Paul Schmidt [Paul Schmitt 1808-1862]. He erected a frame building extending from the corner, partly using material brought from a former building at New Aberdeen, a village about five and one-half miles southwest of Berlin, where he had also a store business. Jacob Stroh helped to lath the building, receiving 75c as a day's wage. The new building was called The California Block and contained several stores. George Davidson, son of the Sheriff, occupied the corner store as a Grocery and Dry Goods business. Next there was a shed with outside stairway leading to a dance hall above it. The shed was used by the guests of Schmidt's Tavern known as the banners Inn. In the rear of the shed there was a brewery operated William Rebscher, who started to brew about 1830. The process of the Rebscher brewery was to soak the grain for 24 hours, then spread it on the cellar floor and shift it around until it commenced to sprout, after which it was carried upstairs again and put into a dry-kiln about 20 x 20 feet in size, the grain being on screens exposed to the heat coming from below. The dry malt was crushed and ground between iron rollers turned by hand. Later on a steam engine supplied the required power. Mr. Rebscher had this brewery until about 1855, when he moved to Frederick Street on Spetz Street.

Sheriff Davidson bought the shed and converted it into two stores. One of these was occupied by Conrad Schmidt who sold wines, liquors, groceries and hardware. Yost Kimmel had a meat shop under the stores.

Next came an open space and a well and next to that a building which was used 1830 to 1835 as a church by a body known as Mifferites whose main article of belief was that the world was coming to an end in 1835. Many of the Millerites, faithful to their belief, sold their properties and household effects. The building was about 1840 occupied by Paul Schmidt, as the Farmer's Inn already spoken of.

Next came an alleyway and next to that William Moore's general store. Mr. Moore's residence was next to his store. Later on it had a clock factory on the second floor for a short time Next came a three-story building erected in 1860 and next to that no building for a long time until the Boehmer Block was erected. This had a clock factory on the second floor for a short time. Next came a building occupied by Mr. Hymmen, erected between 1850 and 1855. The building was painted a buff color and occupied as a bakery. In 1860, E. R. Hayne had a bakery and confectionery store in the Hymmen building. Next came a two-story frame building located on the site of the westerly half of the present Post Office and occupied by William, David and Frederick Miller as the first general store in Berlin. The location was opposite the end of Frederick Street. J. F. Kannengieser had a tailor shop and was also dealer in fancy goods in this building at one time. In 1860 Mr. and Mrs. John Albright occupied part of the building as a dressmaking and millinery shop. Later on Mr. Rooke had a lock and gunsmith shop on the street floor while his family lived above. There was a high board fence on the Benton Street line with balsam trees planted along the inside.

Misfortune:
Body was stolen by Dr. Frederick Christ to be used as a medical display.

A few days after the burial of Eby's child, Dr. Christ came into Schnarr's Tavern in Waterloo Village, and made the remark that the bodies of William Rebscher, John Nahrgang, and Zoeger were not in their graves. Afterwards, Dr. Christ offered to bet with witness that Abram Eby's child was not in his grave. Christ said that he would not go and bring the bodies himself, but that he could get plenty at an outlay of ten dollars.

Business:
The Spetz family purchased the Rebescher Brewery which was located near the corner of Frederick and Weber Street in Kitchener. Spetz Street was named in their honour where the brewery was located.

On the 1875 is it mislabelled as J. H. S. Pitz's Brewery and should read J. H. Spetz's Brewery

Frederick Street, West Side.

On the site in front of the present Fire Hall, on the street line next to the St. Nicholas hotel, an unpainted frame shed, with an enclosed part at one end where the fireman's hook and ladder truck was kept. In case of fire this truck was generally rushed out by hand, a long rope attached to the pole and a double line of men. After the fire was out they would hire a team to draw the truck back.

An open space.

A small dark yellow frame school building erected in 1834 and later used to store the fire engine.

A wood shed later used as a two-cell lock-up for the village, 1857-60, and probably a little later.

Behind the school house stood an undenominational church erected in 1842. The church had a steeple with a railing around it. About ten years later the building was used for a school room, called the Advanced School. In 1856 it was used for the village council and known as the Town Hall. In 1874 it was used as an engine house, and so continued until the building known as the Market House was built in 1869. After 1874 it was again used as an engine house until the present Fire Hall was built on its site.

A two-story brick building with gable toward Frederick Street and a second story porch along the front erected by Justus Werner about 1850, or 51, still standing. Werner had a waggon shop on the first floor and lived with his family on the second. Later a Mr. Foreman bought the building and had a shoe shop on the first floor for a number of years.

A brick house later occupied by Dr. Mylius when he moved there from his King Street house.

A frame building the house of Henry Knell, the jeweller, later occupied by Mathias Riener, a tailor, who came from Vienna, Austria, and moved here from Breslau.

one-story red frame building a little back of the street line with gable toward Frederick Street, erected about 1838, occupied by Peter Rebscher Senior, the brewer's father.

A one and one-half story frame building, not painted, lengthwise with Frederick Street with ground floor a few steps above the sidewalk, occupied by Mrs. Krug, a widow, and next to it her barn.

A vacant space to Weber Street. The Court House was built in 1852, the registry office later, and still later the present Judge's chambers. Vacant space on Ahrens Street.

On the northerly corner of Ahrens a 1 ½ story brick dwelling parallel with Frederick Street built and occupied by Philip Reichert, a carpenter. His father was a pedler, vending tinware and china, rags and produce. A 1 1/2 story frame building with a small veranda over the front door, the dwelling of Otto Fleischauer, still standing and now on the corner of Otto Street.

Intersection of Lancaster, Frederick and Ellen Sts., long known as the five points. Next, on Frederick Street a double, white frame weather board dwelling, half occupied by Henry Otterbein, the other half by Balzar Schmalz.

Next, the farm house of John Eby with his dwelling directly opposite the House of Refuge. The county bought most of Eby's farm for this latter institution.

Frederick Street, East Side.

On the corner Millar's store and at its rear a warehouse belonging to it, a two story building with gable toward Frederick Street.

A vacant lot, site of the present Market Building, surrounded by a six foot hoard fence, customary in those days to keep out cattle, which had the freedom of the streets. A one and one-half story frame building with porch in front occupied by Mr. Yeck who died of being bled by a layman when he was Dr. Scott's patient. A man Geiger married the widow and lived in the building.

A small frame building occupied by Geo. Schmidt.

A small frame building occupied by Wm. Stein.

A two story frame building with a small portico painted white over the front door, the house occupied by Thomas Pierce, then Principal of the Central School and later by Herman Rathman.

On the corner, now occupied by Dr. Honsberger's residence, a two story brick building for some time the residence of Sheriff Davidson. Before that, 1840-1860, Jacob Kramer occupied the building as a tavern. Kramer was known as Strumpf Weber (stocking weaver) from a former occupation in a shop on Oueen Street S.

Weber Street. On the corner a large brick building erected by Christian Enslin about 1855 with veranda along the entire Frederick Street front and on it a narrow gallery at the second floor. The building is still in use for stores with the veranda removed. At one time it was occupied as a tavern.

A one and one-half story frame building lengthwise with Frederick St. On the easterly corner of what is now Spetz St., a two story brick building, set back somewhat from the street, the house of Peter Rebscher. It had a large sign, "Peter Rebscher Brewer"; in the rear was the brewery, a two story frame building, and a large barn. A later brewer was Jacob Summer and after him, in 1862, Joseph Spetz had the house and brewery until he died.

A vacant lot belonging to John Roth and later to Simon Roy who used it as a nursery for shrubs and rare trees.

The old Central School and grounds, the school now remodelled and greatly enlarged to the present handsome Suddaby School. The Central School building had a belfry on top with at first a small bell and later a larger one. Jacob Stroh rang this bell as long as he attended the Central School, later W. H. Breithaupt had this charge for a time.

A frame building occupied by Yost Kimmel, a carpenter.

After a long illness our respected fellow-citizen Adam B. Schaefer was released from earthly life on Wednesday of last week. The deceased came to this country from Germany over fifty years ago and had lived as a resident of of St. Jacobs for fifty years. Until a short time before the death of his wife, three years ago, he was actively engaged in the carpentering and building trade. He was a life-long member of the Lutheran congregation here and held at different times the offices of deacon, S. S. teacher, etc. In politics he was a staunch Liberal. He leaves behind three sons and three daughters. The funeral was held on Friday when a large number of relatives and friends paid a last tribute of respect to the deceased by their presence. Rev. Mr. Liuke officiated. The bereaved children have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends.

A few later particulars regarding the late A. B. Schaefer: He was born Feb. 17, 1831 in Hessen-Darmstadt Germany, came to this country in 1852, came to Canada and took up his trade with his brother-in-law at Bridgeport. He was married in 1854 to Magdalena Winkler and settled in St. Jacobs in 1855. About three years ago he suffered a paralytic stroke and since that he had several more which gradually rendered him helpless. The funeral text was 1's. 121 v. 1 and 2.

Mr. Wm. Shafer Answers Last Call
Was A Former Member of Township and Town Councils

The county has lost a citizen of sterling worth and character, by the death of M. William Shafer, which occurred on Wednesday evening at his home at 2.30 South Queen Street, following an affliction of about a year's duration.

Mr. Shafer was widely known in this district. Both in private life and in the municipal field his name was familiar to not a few, who were admirers of his friendliness, geniality and fair dealings. He was born in this town in the year 1838 and had reached the advanced age of 79 years, 6 months and 24 days, but was reared in the Township of Wilmot. For forty years he farmed on his property on the Petersburg Road, a mile and a half from this city, which a few years ago was sold to a syndicate and put on the market. Sixteen years ago he retired from his farming pursuits and removed to this town, his home being the handsome property at 230 South Queen Street.

Mr. Shafer besides devoting his attention to farming found time to serve the public as a municipal legislator. For about eight years he served, on the WaterlooTownship Council and for some years he also was a member of the local Town Council. His services as Councillor were valuable and ware so recognized by those in touch with public affairs.

His wife predeceased him about twenty years ago. Surviving him are the following children John, on the old homestead Alexander of the Petersburg Road Jacob, Guersney, Sask., who is here at present Ezra, of Marian, Kansas, George, of London, and one daughter, Veronica, at home.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. next Monday at the residence and later Zion Evangelical Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

ELMIRA, March 8, - Mrs. Henry W. Schneider, age 91, died at her home here yesterday. Deceased was born in Kitchener on Sept. 13, 1848. She was married to Henry Schneider who died 14 years ago. Shortly after their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Schneider moved from Waterloo to a farm on the third line of Maryborough township, where they lived for 40 years. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Schneider moved to Elmira. She was a member of the Lutheran church. Surviving are three children, William H. of Elmira, Mrs. Jacob Hoffer of Floradale and Mrs. E. C. Knoblauch, Hesson, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral will be held Sunday afternoon with a short service at the residence at two o'clock, followed by service at St. James Lutheran Church. Burial will be in St. James cemetery. Rev. L. H. Kalbfleisch will officiate. Remains will rest at Dreisinger's funeral Chapel until 10 a.m. Saturday.

SUDDEN DEATH OF D. SCHAEFER

Well Known Resident Passes Away at his Home in his 52nd Year

David Schaefer, a well known resident of the city died suddenly his home, 203 Breithaupt street at 11 o'clock on Saturday night. He had been in ill health for some time but the immediate cause of his death was an attack of elipsy. Mr. Schaefer was in his 52d year. His sudden demise came as a great shock to members of the family, friends and relatives.

The deceased was a native of Waterloo County having been born in St. Jacobs. He had made Berlin his home for about seven vears and was engaged in the painting business. He leaves a sorrowing widow, who was formerly Eliza Stroh, and three children living at home, viz; Anne, Willian, and Viola. There are two brothers Alfred Schaefer of Berlin, and Edward Schaefer of Hespeler, and four sisters, Mrs. J. Cress, St. Jacobs, Mrs. Sydney Schelly, Waterloo, Mrs. Henry Gillis and Mrs. William Heller of St. Jacobs.

Mr. Schaefer was a highly respected citizen and was a good father and husband.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 1.30 from the home to St. Peter's Lutheran church, thence to St. Jacobs where interment will take place.

MRS. ALLEN STAHL

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan, 5 from the Concordial Lutheran church in Lake Park for Mrs. Allen Stahl, 90, of Worthington, Minn. She died at a nursing home on Sunday, Jan. 2, The Rev. August C. Roessler officiated.

Mrs. Stahl nee Louise Schafer was born on June 29, 1881 in Willette County [Waterloo County], Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Daniel and Gertrude Thaler Schafer, She received her schooling in Canada and at the age of seventeen she moved with her parents and family to rural May City.

She was united in marriage with Allen L. Stahl on Dec. 20, 1904 at Sibley, la. They farmed south of Harris, then in Dodge County, Minn, and then moved back to a farm in Osceola County and lived there until 1943, when they decided to retire from farming and moved into Lake Park.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ray Ihnen (Gertrude) of Lake Park, five grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and one great great grandson. Two sisters (twins) also survive, Mrs. Henry Ihnen, Lamberton, Minn. and Mrs. Harvey Donnenwerth of May City,. Ia. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, one grandson, one brother and four sisters.

Burial was in Silver Lake cemetery at Lake Park, Pallbearers were Theron Stahl, Dale Stahl, Donald Ihnen, Delbert Wiese, John Voss and Bernard Voss.

Passing of Edward Soehner - by the death on Thursday, May 16, of Edward Soehner, the community loses an esteemed citizen and the family a kind husband and loving father. The deceased, who was in his 34th year, had been ill for some time, and despite all efforts to regain his health was cut off in the prime of life. He came to Ayr just after attaining his manhood and was employed for a number of years as a moulder in the foundry. Later he engaged in business as a butcher, but was obliged to give up on account of continued ill-health. About ten years ago he married Miss Euphemia Grigg, who, together with a son and daughter - Earl and Marion - survive to mourn their loss. Mr. Soehner was a member of Court Forest of Lebranch, C.O.F., No. 75, Ayr, the members of which order, to the number of about 35, attended the funeral on Sunday in a body, interment being made in the Ayr Cemetery. The pallbearers were also foresters, those acting in that capacity being Bros. H. Griffin, A. Melvin, Chisholm Scott, Chris. Leiska, Robert Taylor and J. Urquhart. The services at both house and grave were conducted by Bro. Rev. W. E. S. James, pastor of the Methodist church. Mr. Soehner's mother and several brothers and sisters were among the mourners. The relatives from a distance who attended the obsequies included Mr. Walter Willison, sr., Mr. and Mrs. Walter Willison, jr., Wm. Willison, James Willison, B. Brown, Miss Jean Willison and Charles Soehner, Hamilton; Mrs. A. A. WILLIAM HENRY SCHNEIDER

The death of William Henry Schneider occurred Tuesday morning at the K-W Hospital after a short illness.

Mr Schneider suffered a stroke December 24 and was then taken to the hospital.

Mr. Schneider purchased a coal business from E. Knoblauch about 36 years ago in Elmira and operated until his recent illness.

Born September 18, 1868 in Waterloo, Mr. Schneider was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry William Schneider. He married the former Edith Miller 33 years ago in Elmira and has been a resident of the town ever since.

Mr. Schneider was an active member of St, James' Lutheran Church and served on the church board for a number of years.

Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Donald (Audrey) Shirk of Elmira, and one sister, Mrs. Jacob Hoffer of Floradale.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2:30 p.m. from St. James Lutheran Church. Burial will be made in St. James' Lutheran Cemetery. Rev. L. H. Kalbfleisch will officiate.

The body will be at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor until Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. when removal will be made to the church. Friends are requested to pay their respects prior to the service at 2:30 p.m.
