    Notes:

Mr. Michael Weichel, has been a resident of Elmira since 1862. He came from Germany when 12 years of age. When 20 years of age he learned blacksmithing in Elmira. In 1868 he commenced a shop on his own account which he continued 12 years. In 1881 he bought the hardware business of Mr. Wachsmuth. He is a public spirited citizen and has done much towards the advancement of Elmira. He was the second Reeve of the Village of Elmira.

The Hardware Business of M. Weichel & Son has assumed large proportions. From a small beginning, it has grown to one of the largest enterprises of its kind in the County of Waterloo, comprising as it does, two large stores with immense stocks. From the beginning the firm has made it a practice to endeavor to please their customers and to supply them with anything they might want in hardware or kindred goods. They have constantly added new lines and are now handling apart from the ordinary class of hardware, coal, wood, binder twine, cement and other bulky goods. They have also a stove and tinware department in which they carry a heavy stock of stoves and furnaces of which they make a specialty. The tinsmithing department is under the management of a first-class experienced mechanic. In 1896 the firm started a store in Waterloo, on the same broad principles, which were responsible for their success in Elmira, with the result that they have now a very large and popular trade there.

    M. Weichel and Son Ltd., Hardware, Celebrates 75th Year of Business

A special sale marks the 75th anniversary of Elmira's oldest hardware store, M. Weichel and Son Ltd., this week. The store was founded in 1879 by Michael Weichel in a store leased from William Wachsmuth, on the site where the Dreisinger furniture store now stands. At that time two clerks were employed in the store, Mr. Weichel's 13 year-old son John and another man. In December 1885 the Weichels moved their stock, valued at $4000 into a store which stood on part of the ground now occupied by the E. S. Otto building. Mr. Weichel carried on business here for a year, meanwhile working on the building which was to become his permanent store.

When the Weichels had been in business in the permanent store for more than sixteen years fire destroyed the frame warehouse in back. 50 pounds of gunpowder were stored in the warehouse and the fire caused this to explode. This explosion brought the warehouse roof down on the fire and extinguished it. In those years the barter system was often used in dealings with farmers. Merchandise was exchanged for eggs and other foods. Sometimes as many as 200 dozen eggs were piled in the back of the store. Eggs brought ten cents a dozen then. In 1899 the Weichels bought the hardware store and stock of J. W. Fear, King street, south, Waterloo. At that time the company was formed with directors and shareholders. Mr. Weichel's brother, William G. Weichel, was the first manager of the Waterloo store. This store was sold in March, 1952 to William Schaefer, who had been its manager for 18 years.

For 35 years after the opening of the Elmira store coal and wood were sold there. This line of business was discontinued about the beginning of the first world war. At that time the price of coal was $6 a ton and wood sold at $5 a cord. Present management of the store is Oscar Ruppel, president; Harold Weichel, vice-president; H. (Lefty) Weichel, secretary-treasurer; Harold Ruppel, director. The store's shareholders are Mrs. Oscar Ruppel, Mr. H. O. Weichel, and Mrs. Ida Heimbecker. The five members of the store's staff are Philip Steenson, Louella Klinck, Wayne Pettie, Omer Bauman and Lawrence Frey.

Weichel's Hdwe [hardware] those earlier days handled coal & wood. They had their sheds down by the C.N.R. and old Adam Weichel emptied many a coal car and also sang while doing it. The older Mike Weichel Sr was always the first one at the store at 7 a.m. and he was an elderly man then. John Weichel then took over with Oscar Ruppel. Then big (Mike Henry) came back from the west. After that Lefty took over as it stands today. Young Mike Oscar worked there awhile and then left for the first world war.

    MICHAEL WEICHEL

Last Monday death removed from Elmira one of her oldest and most highly respected citizens, in the person of Mr. Michael Weichel, a well known hardware merchant, who by dint of industry and enterprise. had acquired a high standing in the business sphere of the district throughout which he was widely known and appreciated. As a citizen he was known as a man of principle and integrity, considerate of the rights of others, honourable and reliable, energetic and enterprising in business, always ready to undertake and foster any project which promised to he of public benefit, foremost in the support of church and school work, and withal a stanch and substantial resident such as are required to uphold the standing of .a community.

Mr. Weichel was born in Hessen, Germany, on September 26th, 1842. When 12 years of age he emigrated to Canada with his mother, settling in this township. For a period of eight years he was engaged in farm work on the farm of the late Win. Peterson, near Hawkesville. Then he came to Elmira, where he learned the blacksmithing trade with the late Adam Heller. Later he started a blacksmith shop at east Heidelberg where he remained but a short time, after which he return to Elmira, and in company with Robert Lochran, bought out Mr. Heller. For some time the firm operated the two then existing blacksmith shops in Elmira. Later deceased became sole owner, and after being sixteen years in this business, he sold out to Mr. H. Oppertshauser, and acquired the hardware business then conducted by the late Wm. Wachsmuth in the store now occupied by Mr. C. Dreisinger. The transfer occurred 38 years ago. From the beginning the business increased and prospered and soon it became necessary to acquire more room, A new site was purchased and one of the most up-to-date hardware stores of the period was erected. With the assistance of his sons, deceased built up a business which called for expansion. Twenty-one years ago (in 1897), a branch store was started in Waterloo under the management of Mr. W. G. Weichel (ex-M. P. for North Waterloo). This store also was greatly improved and enjoyed a prosperous and growing trade under the firm name of M. Weichel & Sons. Besides increasing their own business, the firm took active interest in the formation of manufacturing enterprises which were responsible, in a great degree, for the rapid and substantial growth of Elmira at a time when prospects were not promising. Two years ago the business of the firm was changed into a joint stock company of which deceased was president up to the time of his death.

In 1878, after the death of the late John Ratz, who died while holding the office of Reeve of Elmira, Mr. Welchel was elected Reeve by acclamation In the former's stead. He was passionately fond of music and helped to organize the first brass band In Elmira in which he played for 18 years. He was also a member of St. Paul's Church Choir for 35 Years, in which he held the position of leading tenor up to the age of 70 years.

Deceased leaves to mourn the lose of a kind husband and Indulgent father; a widow, three sons and two daughters, namely, John and Henry, of Elmira; William G., of Waterloo; Clara (Mrs. Oscar Ruppel), and Edith (Mrs. Henry Heimbecher), both of Elmira.

He had reached the age of 75 years, 9 months and 21 days. The funeral will take place this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o'clock, at his late residence. Service will be held in St,Paul's Lutheran Church I of which deceased was a consistent member for many years.

    M. WEICHEL & SON.

It is not an exaggeration to say that the above firm are the most extensive hardware dealers in Waterloo County. They have two mammoth establishments, one here and one at Waterloo. The Elmira branch would make a very creditable display in a city. Their business was established about eighteen years ago. The senior member of the firm has climbed from the ground up, first earning his daily bread as a humble blacksmith, and to-day there are none of our business men who evince more push, energy and enterprise. Mr. John Weichel, the junior member is, from a business point of view, "A Chip of the Old Block" He is the chief manager of the business here. The main store or salesroom is 20x87 feet in dimensions, and all the available space is occupied by every description of shelf and heavy hardware. They also occupy four flats and a cellar. To look over the immense collection of shelf hardware, one cannot help but arrive. at the conclusion that it would be impossible to fail in getting any article known to the hardware profession. The endless variety of useful and necessary articles so conveniently and neatly arranged, compels me to say that this is a model hardware store in the strictest sense of the term. This firm also deals extensively in coal, having a coal shed at the G.TR. depot, and they buy coal, coal oil and cement in carload lots. They make a specialty of binder twine and handled thirty- three tons of twine last year.

    Notes:

Mr. John S. Weichel, is one of the most energetic and enterprising business men of Elmira. He is partner and general manager of the constantly growing hardware business of M. Weichel & Son, Elmira and Waterloo. He attends strictly and promptly to business matters and may always be depended upon to do his part towards the welfare of the town. He has been a member of the Municipal Council, and is president of the Elmira Board of Trade.

Mr. Wm. G. Weichel is manager of the Waterloo store. Under his management the business, which comprises practically similar lines of goods as are kept in Elmira, is constantly increasing and gaining in favor. The large quantities of goods required by the firm, enables them to place their orders on the most advantageous terms.

    ________________

Weichel's Hdwe [hardware] those earlier days handled coal & wood. They had their sheds down by the C.N.R. and old Adam Weichel emptied many a coal car and also sang while doing it. The older Mike Weichel Sr was always the first one at the store at 7 a.m. and he was an elderly man then. John Weichel then took over with Oscar Ruppel. Then big (Mike Henry) came back from the west. After that Lefty took over as it stands today. Young Mike Oscar worked there awhile and then left for the first world war.

    _________________________

John S. Weichel, one of Elmira's prominent and well-known citizens, died early on Tuesday morning at the home of his son, Charles J. Weichel, Park St. Mr. Weichel had observed his 81st birthday on May 10, and had been in failing health for a short time. As one of the leading and oldest business men in this community, and a staunch and active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, his passing will be keenly felt by all who knew him.

He was born in 1866 near Heidelberg, a son of the late Michael and Margaret Weichel, who moved to Elmira when he was about three months old. He received his education in this town, and after leaving school was employed as a bank clerk here. Later he became a partner in his father's hardware business, remaining with it for about 65 years. He retired from active work n the local store in December, 1945, and as president of the M. Weichel & Son Co. in April 1946.

His interests in activities in the town have covered a wide varied field, in business, and social and church life. Mr. Weichel was one of the leading promoters of the Great West Felt Company Limited, and remained a director until only a few years ago. He also played an active part in municipal affairs as a young man, and was a member of the town council in the years when the first sidewalks were built, and the waterworks were established. He was a former member and one time president of the Board of Trade.

Music was one of his favorite interests and he had been a loyal member of the Elmira Musical Society for more than fifty years, and played with the band for a long time. For twenty years the choir of the church to which he belonged benefited by the faithful and capable leadership of Mr. Weichel.

For the past twenty years, since the death of his wife, formerly Ida Ruppel, he had resided at the home of his son, Charles. He was popular with young and old, and an interesting talker, and enjoyed the visits made by his numerous friends, particularly during the past two years when he was unable to be out very much.

He leaves to mourn their loss, four sons, Charles, Oscar, Hilbert and Harry, and one daughter, Mrs. Fred (Marie) Forwell; all of Elmira: one brother William, Waterloo; two sisters, Mrs. Oscar (Clara) Ruppel and Mrs. Edith Heimbecker, both of Elmira; 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. One brother, Henry, died four years ago.

The body will rest at the Dreisinger Funeral Home until this Thursday afternoon at 2: 30, when a brief service will be held there, followed by services at St. Paul's Lutheran church at 3 o'clock conducted by Rev. F. P. Malinsky. Interment will be made in Elmira Cemetery.

    Notes:

Waterloo businessman and politician Billy Weichel was known as the Old Warrior; his most memorable battle being the federal election of 1911 when he defeated William Lyon Mackenzie King. Weichel defeated King, who was the labour minister in the Liberal Laurier government, by 315 votes to win Waterloo North for the Conservatives. It was believed that Weichel won on the issue of free trade with the United States. Weichel's Conservatives opposed reciprocity at a time when Kitchener-Waterloo manufacturers and labourers feared an influx of cheap American goods

    Ex-Postmaster
    O. W. Weichel, Former MP, Dies

    O. W. (Mike) Weichel, former Waterloo North MP, died Friday at St. Mary's Hospital after an illness of three weeks. He was 74. Postmaster in Elmira for 35 years, Mr. Weichel resigned in 1958 to run as a Conservative candidate in the federal election of that year. He completed three terms before retiring in 1965. His election with a majority of 9,342 ended a Liberal reign in Waterloo North which extended back some 41 years. He was the first Conservative to serve the constituency since his uncle, the late W. G. Weichel, defeated Mackenzie King here in 1911. Mr. Weichel spearheaded the drive in the House of Commons which brought Canada its first national fitness plan. He was slated for a parliamentary secretaryship when the Diefenbaker government fell. Born in Elmira, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Weichel. He was educated in Elmira, schools and after the First World War at Shaw's Business College in Toronto. He was employed at his father's hardware firm, M. Weichel and Son, Elmira before enlisting at the age of 22 and going overseas in the First World War with the 118th Battalion. He won the Distinguished Conduct Medal for bravery in the field and lost a leg in action two months before the end of the war. He was later awarded the Queen's Coronation Medal for civilian service and the Medal of Merit by the Canadian legion. The loss of his leg ended what might have been a long sports career. Two weeks before he was wounded, he signed a professional baseball contract to play in the Michigan - Ontario League, and he had been promised a tryout with the team which later became the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL [National Hockey League]. He had played senior hockey with the Ontario Hockey Association before the war and was active in soccer, tennis and track and field, carrying off the 100-yard championship for his regiment. With his sports career at an end, he turned his sports interest to executive work. He was active in the OHA [Ontario Hockey Association] as a coach, manager or executive for more than 30 years. He served on the Ontario Minor Hockey Association executive for nearly 20 years, including two years as president, and was still an honorary executive member of the Toronto Hockey League. In the 1930s and 1940s he coached and managed Elmira hockey and baseball teams and was a past president of the Elmira Badminton Club. Several years ago he was honored by the Ontario Sports Writers Association which made him a guest of honor along with such sports personalities as Floyd Patterson, Tiny Thompson and Don Larsen at the Association's annual Sports Celebrities Dinner in Toronto. Mr. Weichel never lost his keen interest in baseball and hockey. He was looking forward to another trip to Florida, this month to watch the Boston Red Sox training sessions.

    Gained 150 Prizes

A past president of the Ontario Lawn Bowlers Association, he collected some 150 prizes in this sport. Active in veterans and miliary organizations, Mr. Weichel had been a member and trustee of Kitchener branch of the Royal Canadian Legion for nearly 30 years. He was also a member of the Waterloo, Polish and Elmira legion branches, the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans Association, the officers' and Sergeants' Messes of Victoria Street Armory, K-W Naval Veterans Association, and Wing 404, RCAF [Royal Canadian Air Force] Association. He was a past president of Elmira Community Service Club, former group chairman of the Elmira boy scouts for 15 years and a recruiting officer during the Second World War. At one time in the war he served on the executive of 23 organizations. Besides heading war bond and savings stamp drives, he helped promote and build Elmira's present arena. Next to sports, in which his connections are too numerous to fully catalogue, his favorite hobby was music. One of the finest tenors in this part of the country, he formed a concert troupe, the Happy Cousins, which played more than 1,200 concerts in Canada and the United States before an estimated 300,000 people. He taught singing for nearly 15 years in Elmira and at one time had his own orchestra. In 1928 he won a gold medal for Ontario tenors. He had been a bass drummer in Elmira and military bands, and also played the violin. Chairman of Elmira centennial activities, he was also a member of the board of governors of Waterloo County Hall of Fame, a life member of Waterloo County Historical Society, the K-W Big Brothers Association, the Retired Businessmen's Association and former president of Elmira Polar Kings, who won the OHA intermediate B championship. Since his retirement, he spearheaded a $30,000 fund-raising campaign for the Waterloo County Children's Aid Society. A Lutheran, he attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Elmira and was an elder of the church.

    Married in 1923
His wife, the former Olive Hughes of Toronto, predeceased him in 1966. They were married in Toronto in 1923. Surviving are two sons, A. Ross, city editor of The Record, and Earle H. of Oakville, former Kitchener alderman and manager of corporate public relations for the Ford Motor Co., of Canada, two brothers, Charles of Southampton and H. L. (Lefty) of Elmira; one sister, Mrs. F. C. Forwell, Elmira, and four grandchildren. One brother, Harry, predeceased him. The body will be at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until noon Monday when removal will be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Elmira, for service at 3 p.m. Rev. Dayton Fritz will officiate. Interment will be in Elmira cemetery.

Lefty and Gertrude Weichel to mark 50th jubilee
    By Record Staff Writer

Elmira - One of the area's colorful personalities, H. L. (Lefty) Weichel, and his wife, Gertrude, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday with a reception for 75 close relatives from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Galaxy Inn here. The couple were married June 29, 1921, at the little farm house of the bride's parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Schedewitz, in the Village of Yatton, four miles west of here. They left on a honeymoon in a Baby Grand Chevrolet roadster for London, Ont., Hamilton and Niagara Falls, but between Baden and New Hamburg they were caught in a thunder storm. By the time they got the top up on the car they were drenched. Then a tire went flat and they sought refuge in a farmer's shed to change it. "I told my bride, with such a poor start, things are bound to get better," Mr. Weichel said. The couple lived in Yatton for four years and then moved to Elmira where they have remained. Mr. Weichel began his business career as a salesman for Robin Hood Flour Mills of Calgary, and later spent 10 years in sales with Hall-Zrd Foundry Co. of Hespeler and Gilson Co. of Guelph. Mr. Weichel purchased a shoe store in Elmira's business section from Martin Shoemaker and operated it for 17 years. After the death of his uncle, Henry (Big Mike) Weichel, in 1943 he sold the shoe store and went into the hardware business with M. Weichel and Son Ltd. He is president and treasurer of the firm and at 75 the oldest active merchant in Elmira. The Weichels have been life-long members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church here. Mr. Weichel was a member of the board of finance for 15 years as well as serving as treasurer of the congregation. For 14 years he was a member of the board of governors of the Lutheran Laymen's League and treasurer of the Lutheran Hour radio program for which he collected donations and looked after 35 stations in Ontario and Eastern Canada. Mr. Weichel was a member of Elmira town council for 21 years, reeve for six years, mayor for 3 ½ years and warden of Waterloo County in 1954. In 1955-56 he was president of the Ontario Motor League's North Waterloo Automobile Club, and in 1963 was president of the Ontario Good Roads Association. He also served as president for two years of the Canadian Arthritis Society's Elmira zone. Since 1950 he has been Elmira justice of the peace. Currently he is a member of the board of governors of the Waterloo County Hall of Fame. Lefty Weichel's name became widely known when he was chairman of the Happy Cousins Concert Company which in 25 years entertained at 1,200 dinners, socials and garden parties across Ontario and centres in the United States. The company included Lefty's brothers, the late O. W. (Mike) Weichel, the Elmira postmaster who became Waterloo North MP; and the late Harry Weichel; as well as nephews and cousins Ross Weichel, Percy and Norman Ruppel, Murray Ruppel, Otto Klinck and others. Mrs. Weichel has been a convener [sic] of dressings for the Elmira branch of the North Waterloo Cancer Unit for 18 years and for the same period of time has been active with the Elmira-Woolwich Agricultural [should be Horticultural?] Society. An avid gardener, the many flower beds that surround the Weichel home at 84 Arthur St. are her work, as are many crafts in the home. The couple are in good health and spend every summer weekend at their cottage in Port Elgin. Their children are Mrs. Wayne (June) Pettie of Elmira; Mrs. G. J. (Gloria) Wegener of Lake Charles, La.; and Michael, 60 Gilmour Cres., Kitchener. The couple's first-born, Arthur, died in infancy. There are six grandchildren. Anniversary celebrations will continue in August when Mrs. Wegener and her family can join the other children for a family dinner here.
