Daniel Eby, "was born January, 1773, and in 1807 he, in company with others, emigrated to Canada and had his home with his cousin, Benjamin Eby. In 1809 he was married to Catharine Brech who died in 1815, leaving two daughters, namely: Susannah, and Rebecca who was married to Abraham Rosenberger. In October, 1817, he left Canada and went to western Pennsylvania where he formed an acquaintance with Delilah Moxley, a widow residing in McClellandtown, near Pittsburg, to whom he was married in January, 1818, and soon thereafter moved to what is now the township and county of Waterloo, Ontario. They took up land a little north of the town of Waterloo, the farm being now known as the "Huber" or "Mrs. Sittler Farm". Here he resided but a short time, and then went back to Pennsylvania where he took sick and died November 28th, 1820. His wife remained in Canada, and died June 25th, 1842. they were blessed with one son"

Joseph Eby, "the second son of John Eby, was born December 13th, 1777, and came to Canada, from Pennsylvania, in 1818. He spent most of his time with his cousin, Bishop Benjamin Eby, and Christian Burkholder who resided one mile north of the town of Waterloo, on the place now known as the "Huether Farm". When at Christian Burkholder's "Josey" (or "der kla Joe Avy" as he was called), spent his leisure time in making shoes for the primitive settlers. The shoes were made without the use of a last, and when done had more the resemblance of a leather bag than of a shoe. He used no pegs, the shoe being made complete by sewing. He lived a very conscientious life, and was strongly opposed to the use of intoxicating liquors, obscene language, card playing and all kinds of gambling so common in those days. He was never married, and in the latter years of his life was much troubled with a severe cough. He died in the year 1855 at the residence of Lemuel Eby, his nephew, in Bridgeport, Ontario."

Rebecca Eby, "the eldest daughter of John Eby, was born April 14th, 1781, and was married to Samuel Bricker who was born July 25th, 1776, and died November 15th, 1868. In 1802 they moved from Pennsylvania to near Freeport, Ontario, Canada, where they settled on the farm now in possession of Mr. Souder. Here she died November 4th, 1861, leaving a family of eight children."

Samuel Eby, "("Saddler Sam") the youngest son of John Eby, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, June 27th, 1790. He was one of the original settlers of Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada. In the year 1817 he, with other relatives and friends from his native state, settled in Berlin, Ontario. He soon afterwards made his home on a farm near Preston, Ontario, where he remained until 1844, when he returned to Berlin and worked at his trade of harness-making. In 1850 he moved to Colborne, Huron County, Ontario, where he occupied a farm until 1856, and then moved to Conestogo, Ontario, where his wife died in 1862. By this time he was getting up in years, and soon after went to live with his eldest son, Jonas, in Elora, Ontario, where he remained until 1865, then he made his home with his third son, John, at Wyandot, Ontario. Here he remained until the time of his death, which occurred August 8th, 1878. He attained to the mature age of 88 years. On July 27th, 1813, he was married to Elizabeth Brigel, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. They had a family of eight children"

After the death of his wife he left Berlin, Ontario, and went to Stratford, Ontario, thence to Hamilton, Ontario. From Hamilton he went to Wheeling, West Virginia, where, January 18th, 1848, he married a second time. His second wife's name was Susan Watkins, born June 29th, 1829, in Guernsey County, Ohio, and died March 7th, 1885. They had a family of eight children, namely: Sarah C. (dead), Leander, (dead), Charles H. (dead), Annie (dead), Benjamin F. (dead), Alice E. (dead), Charles O.(dead), and Lee Hampton who resides in Wheeling. All the named children, with the exception of Sarah Cordelia who was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, were born in Louisville, Kentucky. Benjamin Franklin Eby, the third son of the family, was married to Mary Della Townsend, and at his death left a family of three children, namely: Daisy Adams, Robert Lee, and Irene."

TOMAN.-Mary Toman (maiden name Bricker), widow of the late Abraham Toman, was born in Waterloo township, Waterloo Co., Ont., November 3, 1806, and died in the township of Wilmot, December 26, 1893, aged 87 years, 1 month and 23 days. She survived her husband for over 26 years. She leaves a posterity of 9 children, 65 grandchildren, 79 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Funeral on Dec 29th, 1893, on which occasion M.S. Bowman preached in German from John 14: 3, and Noah Stauffer in English from Isaiah 28: 29. Buried in Blenheim cemetery. Her end was peace.

Peter Bricker," the eldest son of old Samuel and Rebecca (Erb) Bricker, was born at Chicopee, Ontario, May 16th, 1808. On June 10th, 1834, he married to Susannah, daughter of Peter and Susannah (Bomberger) Erb. She was born November 27th, 1816, and died February 23rd, 1892. On June 12, 1834, they moved on their farm, being composed of lots Nos. 6 and 7, 14th concession, Blenheim Township, Oxford County, about two miles south-east of New Dundee, Ontario, where they resides forty years, then they moved to Berlin where they had their home for seventeen year. The last of their earthly pilgrimage were spent with their son-in-law, Mr. Henry B. Cassel, who resides two miles west of Haysville, Ontario. Here they died. His death took place June 8th, 1892. To them were born seven children..: "

Toman. - Samuel Toman was born in the County of Waterloo, Ont., on March 28, 1833; died in the County of Oxford, Ont., on Oct. 29, 1922; aged 89 y. 7 m. 1 d. He was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church for sixty years or more, and it is confidently hoped by his many friends that he fell asleep in Jesus. He was the father of 16 children of whom 12 survive him. There are also 44 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and 1 sister to mourn his loss. Funeral services largely attended at the Blenheim Mennonite Church on Nov. 1, 1922, conducted by the brethren M. H. Shantz and M. Hallman from Heb. 4: 9. Interred in the cemetery adjoining.

KNECHTEL. Sussannah, widow of the late Daniel L. Knechtel of Kitchener, Ont., died at her home Nov 13, 1935. She suffered considerably in her time, being at death's door a number of times. However, she bore all with the finest of Christian fortitude. Her perennial cheerfulness was one of her marked traits. Her steady faith in the Lord carried her through a multitude of hard experiences. She was the second oldest member of the First Mennonite Church of Kitchener. She was a faithful and highly esteemed member. Though frail, old, and her back bent to well nigh the thighs, she was loved and respected by the young, whose interests were always upon her heart. She will be greatly missed by pastor and members. She is survived by 4 sons and 1 daughter (Albert, Allen, and William, all of Kitchener; Jacob of Mannheim, and Mrs Albert Huffman of Kitchener); also 28 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren survive. Two services were held - one at her home church (Kitchener), the other at her church of earlier days (Mannheim). She was buried at the latter cemetery. The following brethren were in charge: C. F. Derstine, S. F. Coffman, and Manasses Hallman.

Bricker. - Isaac Bricker was born in Oxford, Co. Ont., Sept. 24, 1835; died at the home of his daughter near Kitchener, Ont., Apr. 21, 1926; aged 90 y. 6 m. 28 d. On July 8, 1856, he was married to Lydia Snider who died in Mar. 5, 1904. He leaves 6 sons, 4 daughters, 34 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. One son predeceased him. Bro. Bricker had been a member of the Mennonite Church for many years and took an active interest in the work. His place at service was seldom vacant until old age would not permit him to attend. Funeral on April 24, 1926, with service at the home by Bro. J. W. Witmer and at the Blenheim Mennonite Church by Bro. M. H. Shantz. Texts, Amos 4: 12 and Acts 3: 19. Buried in adjoining cemetery.

ISAAC BRICKER

The traveller who wanders over much of Blenheim township has his attention considerably taken up by the numerous handsome residences he sees on every hand. Mr. Bricker's residence on the fourteenth concession is one that particularly attracts his attention for its dimensions and elegant appearance. Some time ago the writer, who having had occasion to a tarry a short time beneath its roof, was astonished at the remarkably convenient arrangement of the interior. In fact it is the best equipped in this respect of any farm residence he ever entered. It contains sixteen rooms, eight down stairs and a like number upstairs, in addition to the basement, which is partitioned off into six rooms. In the latter is a fine large furnace. From the furnace lead hot air pipes which convey hot air to every room in the house if desired and the entire interior made comfortably warm in a few minutes. There is no danger whatever from fire, as the floor consists of solid portland cement, brick walls and other fire proof material There are seven hot air registers and five for cold air. In the various departments the vegetables, canned fruits, etc, are stored. Two of these are such connected with a dumb waiter, in the kitchen above is combined with a cupboard. By this means the tired housewife is saved the trouble of daily climbing and descending the stairway with a full of eatables, etc.

The residence, it will be observed, is double structure, one not being occupied by Mr. Bricker and wife, and the other half occupied by son, Isaiah, and family. As you enter the front doorway you find spacious hallway and a splendid open stairway which is divided by a banister. The apartments occupied by the parents are duplicated in that portion occupied by the son. Beautiful stained glass in the front, lends attractiveness to the interior of the hall. The wood work is neatly carved black ash finished in oil. In the basement is a large furnace with boiler for heating water for washing clothes, butchering, etc., and adjoining which is a large brick woodshed On top of the roof of the main dwelling is a square space surrounded by a handsome iron railing. From this space a magnificent view of the country for a radius of from five to six miles can be obtained, and the blue capped environments of Woodstock, at least twenty miles to the southwest are plainly visible. This residence can be seen from quite a distance ere you reach it. On the left hand side of the lane as you enter is a new hedge of Norway spruce, Scotch pine and Canadian cedar intermingled. To the right is a row of maples and basswood. The residence is certainly one of consider able architectural beauty and is principally of Mr. Bricker's own design.

Mr. Bricker was born on lot 6, 14 h concession, in 1835, on the old homestead hewed out of the wilderness back in the thirties by his father, the late Peter Bricker. The latter was born near Chicopee in 1808. The mother, formerly Susanna Erb, was born near Bridgeport, Waterloo County, in 1816

She died at the age of seventy-six years, and she was followed by the father in 1892, aged 84 years. They were for many years prominently identified with this section and endured their share of the hardships incident to the early settlement of Blenheim township. They moved to lot 6 in 1834 at a time when the Asiatic cholera was raging in this section. The mother was taken down with the deadly terror, but she fortunately survived and was spared to her husband and family. They had lived on the 15 h concession forty years, and subsequently in Berlin for seventeen years. After that they moved to the home occupied by Henry Cassell near Haysville, where they lived about a year when they died.

Isaac the subject of this sketch, received a very limited education, his only chances for acquiring knowledge, being during the winter months in the primitive school. He being the oldest child in the family his services were therefore naturally in greater demand by the father. He faithfully remained subject to parental authority on the old homestead until he was twenty-one years of age. At about that time he formed a matrimonial alliance with Lydia, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Detweiler) Snider. The mother is now in her sixty-sixth year. The result of this union is a family of eleven children, distributed now as follows:

Oliver, the oldest child and son, is in Manitoba; David is farming near Doon; Benjamin and Peter are twins, Peter working on the farm of Joe Bower's and Ben cultivating tobacco in Essex county; Sarah is the wife of Aaron Bowman near Mannheim; Mary is the wife of Noah Bowman of Roland, Man; Isaiah, wife and child living at the home place; Isaac is employed with Mrs. Hall, near Plattsville; Lydia is the wife of Jacob Bergey in Manitoba; Melinda is the wife of Aaron Bergey of Bellerue on the Allegheny, Pa; Anson is still living at home.

Mr and Mrs Bricker did not come to this their first home as man and wife on a bed of roses. It was in sad contrast to the elegant home they can now call their own and live in peace and comfort during the remaining years of their life. An old frame house was then their abode, and the premises were sparsely provided with the necessary conveniences. But harmoniously they went to work, gradually making improvements, tilled their land and reared their large family, finally accomplishing the results I have just described. While they are now not actively engaged in farming they strive to keep their minds occupied in a minor way. A garden, several cows, a few hogs and chickens being about the extent of their farming at present is the chicken coop they take consider able pride and well they may, for one must go many miles before he finds as fine a lot of fowl. Among the lot I noticed some splendid specimens of the partridge cochin, light Brabmas, black Langshans and Plymouth Rocks. In the barnyard will be found a number of fine porkers of the Tamworth and Berkshire variety.

Mr. and Mrs. Bricker are both members of the Mennonite church with which they have been connected for a period covering nearly forty years. The former has been trustee of his school section for quite a number of years and is always favorable to anything that tends to promote the best welfare of our public schools.

During the earlier years of the married life Mr. and Mrs. Bricker seldom travelled any distance from home. But of late years they have seen considerable of the country, having visited their children in Manitoba and some years ago went on an excursion to the Niagara Falls.

They are now enjoying life to life fullest extent in a quiet christian way, being well entitled to the fruits of many years of toll and well spent life.

Isaiah, the son, has charge of the farm and is having good success. In his stables are several find roadsters. In ….. particularly taken with the way is arranged for convenience Jacob's Ladder, as the old men calls in is to its idea of his own. It is a stationary affair in the centre of the barn reaching from the floor to the roof. In 1876 this bar was struck by lightninage and totally destroyed. It was a set back and quite serious loss to the father at the time

DIED STAFFORD - At Port Elgin, on Feb. 29th, Rebecca Bricker, relict of the late William Stafford, aged 66 years.

Port Elgin Times: The news of the death of Mrs. William Stafford came as a shock to many on Sunday morning. She had been in her usual health up till Saturday but passed away during the night after a few hours of severe suffering. Mrs. Stafford was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Bricker and lived in this community nearly all her life. She was a careful, industrious woman, an indulgent mother and kind neighbor. Her husband died a little more than a year ago. She leaves a family of six, four daughters and two sons. The daughters are Mrs. T. Rankin and Mrs. Fair of Port Elgin, Mrs. H. C. Baker, Paisley, and Mrs. R. Marrs of Manitoba. The sons are Hiram in Manitoba and Dilman in Bruce. The funeral took place to Port Elgin cemetery on Tuesday afternoon and was attended by many old friends and acquaintances. Rev. H.E. Allen, assisted by Rev. A. Mahaffy, conducted the funeral services. Mr. Allen will conduct a memorial services in the Baptist church next Sunday evening

Ernst.-Rebecca Hagey was born Feb. 19, 1842, departed this life Oct. 15, 1926; at the ripe age of 84 y. 7 m. 27 d. 64 years ago she was married to Jacob Ernst who predeceased her in October, 1904. To this union were born 5 children, of whom one, Mary Ann, has passed on to the great beyond. There remain to mourn a loving Christian mother, 2 sons, 3 daughters, 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Sister Ernst united with the Mennonite Church at the age of 17, and for 67 years she was a faithful member. As God gave her a long, useful life may He now grant her an eternal peace. Funeral services were held form the home of her son David, Preston, Ont., on Oct. 18, thence to the Shantz church, near Baden, Ont. where her body was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. Bros. U. K. Weber, Orphen Wismer, and Oscar Burkholder had charge of the services. Text, 1 Cor. 13: 13.

HAGEY - Joseph B. Hagey was born Oct. 4, 1848; died Oct. 1, 1924, just three days before his 76th birthday. He was a son of Bishop Joseph Hagey, who served the Mennonite Church a generation ago, and he spent his entire life on the old homestead. On Sept. 11, 1877, he was married to Rebecca Snyder. To this union were born six children (Edith, Irvin, Elsie, Lora, Walter, and Samuel). Samuel died in infancy, Walter at the age of 5, and Elsie, wife of Dr. Sauder, in 1918. He left a sorrowing companion, one son, two daughters, two brothers, one sister and 11 grandchildren. The funeral was held on his 76th birthday from his late home to the Cressman Mennonite Church for services and adjoining cemetery for burial. Services conducted by Brethren Whitham and Oscar Burkholder. Text, Romans 14: 10.

March 14-One of the oldest residents of this district, Joseph Hoffman died at his home near Heidelberg yesterday. Mr. Hoffman was in his 93^rd year. Born in Pennsylvania, he had been engaged in farming until his retirement.
The funeral will be held Wednesday from the residence at 9 a.m. Interment will take place at the Conestogo Mennonite Cemetery.

Queen Street North, East Side.

Huber and Ahrens occupied the corner as a store and had a warehouse at the rear. The first section of the American Block was built in 1862. It contained a hotel with entrance on Queen Street and stores on the King Street front.

A meat shop occupied by one Schaefer and later by Crozier. This building was later occupied by Von Ebenau, a German toy dealer. He also built some sidewalks for the village in 1857.

A long two story frame building originally used by C. Ahrens as a barn and later by John Jacob Woelfle, a plough maker, who had a shop at one end and lived in the rest of the building. He had worked in the foundry on Foundry St. and after this shut down started his own shop. The building was later occupied by Rev. Jacob Wagner, who died there.

In 1858 a two story frame building was erected by Louis Breithaupt as his office and leather store. This was the first building on this site.

A 1 1/2 story dwelling with veranda lengthwise with Queen St. occupied by jailer Walden. Dr. Whiting later lived in this building for a time.

A small house occupied by Mrs. Harbin, (widow of Rev. Harbin who was Swedenborgian minister in Berlin) and her sister, Mrs. Wheeler.

A garden owned by Thomas Sparrow, with balsam trees along the street, adjoining the Sparrow's two story house with gable toward Queen St. and long veranda. Sparrow later moved to Galt.

A two story plaster building painted red with ground floor considerably above the sidewalk level and steps leading up to it, occupied by the Commercial Bank.

St. Peter's Church, formerly a vacant lot belonging to Mrs. Krug. The lot extended to Weber St. and to Mrs. Krug's house on Frederick St. This site was at one time favorably considered for the Central School, but it was decided that the ground would not be large enough. The present parsonage of St. Peter's Church was built by Dr. Eby, a native of Berlin, who had been living in Sebringville. He was the oldest son of John Eby spoken of as on Frederick Street. He married a daughter of Cyrus Bowers.

One and a half story frame building painted red, the dwelling of Charles Roos, a cabinet maker in Hoffman's factory.

A brick yard operated by Nicholas Zieger who made puddled brick by hand. Later the brick yard belonged to John Dauberger whose house, a red frame building, was on the corner of Ellen and Queen.

Eby, AARON was a native son. Ezra Eby's Biographical History of Waterloo Township says that he was the eldest son of John Eby (who resided on the Poor House Farm, Berlin), was born August 14, 1838 and was married to Matilda Bowers, a daughter of Cyrus Bowers of Berlin.

He was a graduate of the medical faculty of the University of Toronto, 1864. Following his graduation his locations were reported as follows:

May 12, 1864 - Sebastapol. February 2, 1865 to April 5, 1866. New Hamburg, where his office was near the Mill.

From there to Sebringville until September 3, 1874 when he moved to Berlin where his office was over the Journal Printery. His card of January 7, 1875 showed an association between Eby and J. A. Whiting but by April 22 his card mentions his name alone. An item appeared in the Dumfries Reformer July 21, 1875 which said:

"Dr. Eby, of Berlin, Ont. has patented a very useful and ingenious machine for collecting potato-bugs from the growing vine."

On December 2, 1875 his last card appeared, and on December 23rd. was an article regarding the purchase of Die Glocke of Walkerton by Eby and John A. Rittinger. After June 13, 1878 Eby published the Walkerton Telescope, while Rittinger published Die Glocke.

In 1881 he returned to Sebringville to practise. After developing palsy following a severe nervous disease in 1885, he gave up his practice, and ran a drug store until shortly before leaving Sebringville. In 1896 he returned to Berlin where he died at his residence on Maynard St. at the corner of Margaret Avenue.

His obituary in the Berlin Telegraph on July 13, 1899 referred to him as one of the finest types of a generation. . „He was a man of culture, a voluminous reader of good intellect, who always took a deep interest in current events and a lifelong Reformer."

In addition to his widow he was survived by six children, most of whom were in the United States.

Mrs. Martin Dunham

Another link with the early days in Kitchener and Waterloo county was broken in the death at the K.-W. Hospital Tuesday morning of Mrs. Magdalena Eby Dunham. relict of the late Martin Dunham in her 78th year. Mrs. Dunham enjoyed good health until about two months ago when she was removed to the hospital.

A daughter of the late John Eby Mrs. Dunham was born on the Eby homestead, Frederick street farm at one time comprising of the house of refuge property a tending to the Five Points. Her father built the Eby homestead and brought Rebecca Bricker there bride in 1837. Mrs. Dunham was born in 1851 and at five years of age was a pupil in the first class at the opening of the old Central school in 1856. Both grandparents came to Waterloo county from Pennsylvania in the first decade of the last century. Samuel Eby settling near the head of Queen street on the road to Bridgeport Bridgeport and Samuel Bricker, who took a dramatic part in trek from Pennsylvania at Chicopee. Miss Susannah Eby

One of the County's oldest citizens Susannah Eby, aged 80, descendant of Samuel Eby, passed away on Tuesday afternoon at her home, 178 Frederick St., Kitchener. The late Miss Eby was the youngest and only surviving member of the John and Rebecca Eby family and was born at the Eby homestead, built in 1837, now 362 Frederick Street. In her youth the farm included what is now the House of Refuge property. When stricken with blindness, her father sold his farm to the county for the House of Refuge, reserving the house and five acres of land. This was sold later to his son-in-law, Martin Dunham. Her grandparents were pioneers who came to Waterloo County from Pennsylvania in the early years of the 19th century. Her grandfather, Samuel Eby, was one of the six original settlers of this community. Her mother's father was Samuel Bricker, who played a dramatic role in the mortgage episode of 1802-1805. Deceased was a member of the Trinity United Church and for many years taught a young women's Bible class and for 36 years acted as treasurer of the Sunday School. A private funeral service is being held at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home today (Friday) at 2 p.m., followed by public service at 2.30 in Trinity United Church. Rev. W. E. Pescott of Toronto, a former pastor, will be in charge. Interment in First Mennonite Cemetery.

Trim Services Ltd., as it is currently known, was established in 1901 under the name of S. Groff & Son. It operated as a manufacturers agent, servicing the garment industry in Western Canada. In its early years, the company was the Western Canada representative for Canadian Buttons Ltd., one of the largest button producers in the British Empire. They also represented many other companies in the needle trade, selling zippers, cotton trimming, pant bindings, buckles and, of interest, ivory and wooden buttons. The company opened an office in Vancouver in 1948
.
Bob Groff, the current owner, noted in 2001 that as impressive as it might be to survive 100 years in business, his family has roots in the garment industry dating back to the late 1600s. Hans Groff, one of his first ancestors to come to North America, landed in Grofftown, Pennsylvania and ran a successful business as a middleman handling furs between the aboriginal and expatriate European populations.

When Samuel Groff stepped off the train at Winnipeg on a spring day in 1901, he brought with him two things from his home in Waterloo County: a sample grip of buttons, and a deep desire to start a successful business in the West. In an article written in the mid-1950s, the company was described as having progressed from one man's pioneering effort to the combined services of 20 employees. It has always been a family business with as many as four nephews involved at one time.

The present business of Trim Services Ltd. was started by Allan B. Groff in 1972 as an outgrowth of Groff Agencies, continuing to provide services in the trimming needs of the needle trade. The company was purchased by the current owner, Bob Groff, in 1980 from his father. Bob, following in the long tradition of his family, had started out as a 19-year-old button cleaner in 1978. He continues to run a family-based business, supplying buttons, zippers, fabric, thread, and hangers to the garment manufacturers. Their business was conducted in the Exchange District of downtown Winnipeg, once inhabited by more than 100 garment-industry firms.

The business moved out of its downtown location in 2001 and today, Bob and his wife Lisa continue to operate Trim Services out of their home as a team with no employees. They continue to service some of the heavyweights in Winnipeg's garment industry, including Nygaard International, Standard Knitting, and Western Glove, generating over one million dollars in sales annually for the companies that they represent.

SAMUEL GROFF. PRESIDENT NORTH WEST BUTTON CO.

Mr. Samuel Groff, though not a native born Berliner, still is a son of the fine old County of which Berlin is the chief town. He comes of Pennsylvania German stock. His grand father was Andrew Groff who learned the trade of Miller in his home state - Pennsylvania. In 1822 he came to Waterloo and after a few years spent there and at Galt, he acquired a large tract of land near Preston, where he carried on farming, saw-milling, a grist mill, store, hotel and distillery and became one of the wealthiest men in the county. His eldest son, Isaac, was the father of the subject of this sketch, who was born near Freeport in 1847. He early entered mercantile life in the late J. Hoffman's store and was one of the earlier merchants in Berlin. He was head of the firm Groff and Hymmen for many years, a house that was among the largest in the county. Several years ago, he went to Winnipeg and at present he is president of the North West Button Co.

Charles S. Eby, fourth son of the late Jonas Eby, was born at Goderich, Ontario, November 3rd, 1845. The early years of his boyhood were spent in Elora where his parents moved before he had completed his second year. When only eleven years of age he was converted to God while attending a camp meeting on the old Peel circuit. He soon after joined the Wesleyan Methodist Church, and has always remained loyal and true to God and the church of his choice.

When about fifteen years old he was apprenticed to a saddle and harness maker in Guelph, but his heart was not in his work; he took more interest in his Latin grammar which he kept tacked before him while at work at the bench. He remained there nearly two years; then thought there was no use spending any more time in a harness-maker's shop, as the ambition of his life was to study for the ministry, to which he felt called. He taught school for some time, a few miles from Guelph, and at the age of eighteen began to preach. The late Rev. Dr. Carroll, then chairman of the Guelph District, recommended him to the Conference, and he spent one year (the first year of his probation), on the Peel circuit. In the fall of 1865 he went to Victoria University, Cobourg, with the determination to go through a college course, and to work his own way along.

Something seemed to draw him to the German work, and when he had been two years at Cobourg, Providence opened up a way for him to go to Germany to perfect himself in the German language. He attended the Theological University at Halle, and spent two years and a half there and in other parts of Europe. He made good use of the time in preparing himself for the mission work that lay before him. Before leaving Europe he preached in both German and French. In the latter part of 1870 he returned to Canada, much stronger in body and enjoying far better health than ever before.

He again went to Cobourg to continue his studies, and the following May graduated with honors, and received the degree of B. A. In June he was ordained and received into full connection by the conference. The same month he was married to Miss Nellie Keppel, of Brooklyn, New York, and settled down at Preston, Ontario, as superintendent of the German Mission in connection with the Methodist Church. He spent five years in the German work, - three in Preston and two in Hamilton, Ontario. Then came a change. God had other work for him, and a great future lay before him in a far distant land. Just at this time (in 1876), a call came for two more men for the foreign mission--Japan. Consecrated, whole-hearted men were wanted. Bro. Eby was one of the men the conference chose for that important work.

Always ready to obey the Saviour's command, and willing to go anywhere for Christ, he at once responded to the call. Preparations for the journey were immediately made, and in August of the same year he bade a long good-bye to friends, home and native land, and with his wife and two little children sailed for the islands of Japan. He threw his whole soul into his new work. It was not easy work. The Japanese language had to be learned, and many other difficulties overcome. His powers for learning languages are wonderful, and it was not long before he had mastered the Japanese, and could preach in that language as freely as in English. For several years he remained, doing a noble work for God, then his health failed and he was obliged to leave for a time and return to Canada.

Early in the spring of 1885 he left Japan and did not return for nearly two years. He and his family were welcomed by their many friends in Canada and the United States. His visit and the change were of great benefit to him and, through the blessing of God, he soon regained his health. During his stay here the degree of D. D. was bestowed upon him by the Victoria University, Cobourg. He lectured and gave missionary addresses from one end of the Dominion to the other, and in some places in the United States.

He was ready when the time came for him to return to Japan, and was anxious to get once more at the work he loved so well. Since his return his heart has been more than ever in the work. God is crowning his labors with success, and he is looking forward to a long term of usefulness in the Empire of Japan. He is a minister of superior ability, with strong mental powers and decided convictions. He is a master of his subject, and he pours out his heart with fervent eloquence, holding his audience with intense and absorbing interest. His rhetorical ability and literary skill will obtain him a hearing anywhere. He possesses a master mind, and his hearers feel that more than an ordinary man is addressing them. He has chosen a field where his superior powers will find ample scope in delivering and enforcing that gospel which has done so much for himself."

EBY, CHARLES SAMUEL, Methodist missionary, author, and publisher; b. 3 Nov. 1845 in Goderich, Upper Canada, son of Jonas Eby and Hannah Fessant; m. 15 June 1871 Ellie (Nellie) Keppel in Brooklyn (New York City), and they had three daughters and three sons; d. 20 Dec. 1925 in Saskatoon.

Descended from Pennsylvania German stock, Charles Eby was converted when he was 11 at a camp meeting in Elora, Upper Canada, where his family had moved. At about 15 he began a two-year apprenticeship with a saddle and harness maker in Guelph while expanding his education. He then earned a teaching certificate, taught for a year near Guelph, and served as an exhorter in the local Wesleyan church.
At age 19 Eby began preaching, and in 1865 the annual conference of the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Canada permitted him to attend Victoria College in Cobourg as part of his probation for the ministry. After two years he travelled to Europe, where he studied German, French, and theology. He returned to Victoria in 1870 and graduated the following spring (dd 1886). Shortly thereafter he was ordained and married Ellie Keppel.

Eby served the Methodist German missions at Preston (Cambridge) and Paris, Ont., from 1871 to 1874 and those in Hamilton from 1874 to 1876. He visited all the German missions in Ontario, and lectured widely on his European travels in order to raise money for this work. Considered an excellent lecturer and a rousing preacher, he staunchly supported traditional evangelism. He began publishing the biweekly Der Canadische Evangelist [Canadian Evangelist] (Preston) in 1872 and personally maintained the journal until 1875 despite financial losses. The magazine was never well received, however, and his financial and propaganda campaigns outside the regular mission channels disturbed many itinerants.

In 1876 Eby was appointed to Japan, where the church had begun work in 1873 [see George Cochran*]. The mission authorities believed that his ardent zeal would spark a revival there as well as reawaken the Christian spirit in Canada. After learning basic Japanese, Eby opened a mission in K?fu in 1878. Although conversions were initially rare, he attracted large crowds through his sermons and his lectures on Western religion and culture. He also helped to train a native Japanese ministry in Tokyo.

Strongly committed to evangelization, Eby considered that the real hindrance to Christian civilization came from the scepticism and secularism inherent in modern Western science and philosophy. For him, the best hope of success lay in attracting the brighter members of the samurai class by presenting Christianity as a logical ethical and moral system as well as a spiritual experience. In 1881-83 he published the Chrysanthemum (Yokohama), a monthly aimed at the Japanese intelligentsia but read mostly by the missionary community.
In early 1883 Eby delivered in Tokyo a popular series of lectures on Western theology and philosophy which was published in both English (Christianity and humanity) and Japanese. He credited these lectures with increased tolerance of Christianity by the Japanese authorities, and also with helping to promote a spiritual revival and making the K?fu mission financially self-supporting. Another lecture in early 1884 appeared as The immediate Christianization of Japan: prospects, plans, results. On furlough in 1885-86, Eby undertook an exhausting North American tour to promote Methodist missions. In 1886 he presented an important lecture, published in Toronto as Methodism and the missionary problem, on the need to devote greater resources to overseas work. Before leaving Canada, he began a campaign for two projects that would dominate his remaining years in Japan.

Eby believed that the best way to convert Japan was to establish a large educational and social-relief mission near the Tokyo Imperial University where special lectures on Christianity could be presented. After modifications to accommodate traditional evangelism, regular church services, and a greater role for native Japanese workers, the Central Tabernacle opened in January 1891. In addition to running it, Eby published Japan for Christ, a journal outlining its work. In his second undertaking Eby, recognizing that the Board of Missions in Canada could not afford new recruits, called for "a supplementary force of self-supporting missionaries who, would work in harmony with the mission, and teach to pay expenses." Fifteen men and one women were to work in Japan as part of this "light brigade" of Christian soldiers before it ceased operations in the early 1890s.

Most of Eby's campaigns led to disputes. The Central Tabernacle spent more than one-eighth of the Japan mission budget, yet had little impact on the Japanese intelligentsia. Moreover, Eby proved to be a poor administrator, and his independent financial campaigns embarrassed the Board of Missions. Similarly, the board had no authority over the Self-Support Band, but feared it would have to pay the group's expenses if anything went wrong. Eby had little regard for the wishes of others, and his relations with the Canadian Methodist authorities and the highly nationalistic native Japanese church were often strained. After his return to Canada in 1893 because of exhaustion, the controversies surrounding the Japan mission that he and his supporters had aggravated reached a climax. In late 1895 Eby and others were removed from the work there.

In 1896 Eby accepted an invitation to Homer Street Methodist Church in Vancouver, an institution with an active Japanese and Chinese membership. Three years later he moved to the similarly diverse Agnes Street Church in Toronto. Subsequently he held a variety of appointments, including Bracebridge (1903-5) and Kingston (1905-7). He then laboured for a year as secretary for eastern Asia of the International Reform Bureau, which opposed prostitution and the use of alcohol and opium. In 1908 he accepted a call from Zion Congregational Church in Toronto, and a year later he opened the People's Institute, a socialist church advocating brotherhood, social action, and peace. After his wife's death in 1912 he lived with a daughter in Saskatoon.

Eby was a man of rare talents, undoubted skills, and restless energy. He had a profound impact on the founding and early progress of the Methodist mission in Japan and did much to encourage Canadian support for mission work. He also strongly promoted ecumenism in church affairs, and strove to have Japan recognized as an equal member of the community of nations. As his obituary noted, he was a refined scholar, an impassioned preacher, and a courageous missionary.
