Rev. Ludwig Koch, "was born in Weinsberg, kingdom of Wurtenberg, Germany, July 19th, 1801. In 1819 he emigrated to America and in July of the same year he came to Chambersburg, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Here he was engaged in farming for three years, but not finding everything to his satisfaction he, in company with others, moved to Canada in spring of 1823. After being here for some time he formed an acquaintance with Barbara Reist to whom he was married in October, 1824. Shortly after their marriage they settled on lot No. 34, German Company's Tract, Woolwich Township, where they commenced in the bush. In a few years they had cleared a large part of their extensive forest farm and had erected thereon such buildings as were common in those days. Here they resided over sixty-five years. The farm is now owned by their son David. In July, 1845, Mr. Ludwig Koch was ordained to the ministry of the Mennonite denomination. His field of labor was Martins, Conestogo, and Elmira. He was sincere in his calling,and always directed the sinner to the cross where Christ suffered for him; and for the children of God he had words of consolation by reminding them of the Lord's words, "I am with you always", and "whatsoever ye shall ask in my name that I will I do". His kindness of heart and simplicity of manners endeared him to all classes who were acquainted with him. He died in September, 1889, and his wife who was born November 15th, 1801, died August 19th, 1890. To them was born a family of eight children"

DAVID KOCH.

His farm is near the outskirts of the village and is one of the oldest in the township, being known as the old Musselman farm, Mr. Koch was born. in Woolwich Township, on lot 34, German Company's Tract, in 1840. He comes down from good, old German stock, his father [Ludwig] being born in Weinsberg, Germany, in 1801. The latter came to the New World in 1819, and in 1824, after a matrimonial alliance with Barbara, daughter of John and Susannah Reist, commenced house- keeping in the wilds of Woolwich, on lot No. 34. Here the parent stem flourished, and for a period of some sixty odd years they diligently labored toward the advancement of civilization, and reared a family of eight children. The father was ordained as a minister of the Mennonite faith in 1845, and until his death in 1889, he was a faithful expounder of the doctrines of that denomination. He had reached the ripe age of eighty-eight years-full of honors when the last summons came. His wife, who was born in 1801, followed him to await the resurrection, at the remarkably advanced age of ninety years.

Koch. - David R. Koch was born Sept. 1, 1840; died Feb. 23, 1916; aged 75 y. 23 d. On Oct. 21, 1861, he was married to Elizabeth Reichert. To this union were born 12 children of whom 2 preceded him. He leaves a sorrowing widow, 6 sons, 4 daughters, a number of grandchildren, and many friends and acquaintances to mourn his departure. He united with the Mennonite Church early in life and remained faithful to the end. He was of a hopeful, cheerful disposition, and seemed to see the bright side of things. He always had a kindly smile for everybody, and his cheerful face will be missed in the home and in the church where he always attended regularly if health permitted. During the last few weeks of his life he suffered from a complication of diseases from which he patiently waited to be relieved, being ready and anxious to exchange mortal suffering for immortal glory. Funeral services Feb. 26, by Bishous Jonas Snider and Abr. Gingerich. Interment in Conestoga Cemetery.

The Funeral Will be held from his late residence in Conestogo on Saturday, Feb. 26th, 1916, at 1 o'clock p. m., from there to the St. Jacobs Mennonite church for service and thence to the Conestogo Mennonite Burial Ground on the Hawksville road for interment. The son David, and subject of this sketch, was not reared in the lap of luxury in his younger days, and as the common phrase goes, had to "hoe his own row." He was married to Elizabeth Reichert. They have been blessed with twelve children. Despite having to face sickness and other misfortunes in his pathway through life, Mr. Koch has succeeded in reaching the top rung in the ladder of agricultural pursuits, and to-day is the happy possessor of four hundred and sixty acres of as choice land as you will find in the County of Waterloo. He is a practical farmer in every sense of the term. Yet, while he has accummulated all these acres in the face of adversities, he has enjoyed the bright side of life, and has not denied those around him the comforts which go to make life worth the living. Being of a jovial, good-natured disposition whenever you meet him, either in his own domicile or in public, has made him a very popular citizen in his neighborhood. Those who have occasion to sojourn under his roof are always shown that generous hospitality so typical of the average Pennsylvania- Dutch home, where the stranger or visitor is made to feel that he is one of the family. Mr. Koch, being now in the 58th year of his age, is still able to perform a good day's work, and every day, excepting the Sabbath, he will be found busily engaged on some portion of his estate. He does not confine his farming exclusively to the raising of grain, but annually turns out quite a number of fat cattle for export. In his stables at the time of my visit, were a number of very choice animals, which have already been sold for shipment to the British market. Mr. Koch will chat for hours upon subjects pertaining to agriculture, and it may be said that many profitable pointers are to be ob tained by embyro farmers from his well-balanced mind. Not only is he thoroughly versed in farming, but is an intelligent conversationalist on questions foreign to his adopted vocation.

MRS. ELIZABETH ERNST

Mrs. Elizabeth Ernst, 84, died early Sunday at her residence, 53 King St., Elmira. She was the widow of Henry Ernst and a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Foell. Mrs. Ernst was a resident of Elmira for 20 years. She was a member of Gale Presbyterian Church and the Ladies Aid.

Surviving are a daughter, Matilda, at home; a sister, Mrs. Mary Ernst, Elmira, and five grandchildren. Two daughters predeceased her.

The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor where service was held Wednesday at 2: 30 p.m. with Rev. C. L. Mitchell officiating. Burial was in Elmira Cemetery.

MRS. MARY ERNST

Mrs. Mary Ernst, 82, of 28 Park Avenue, Elmira, died suddenly at her home Friday. Born in Wellesley Township April 9, 1870, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Foell. She attended Gale Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are thre daughters, Mrs. Irva Jefferson of Hamilton, Mrs. Albert (Minnie) Heiser of Kitchener and Mrs. Clarence (Elena) Strohm of Elmira; nine grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. Her husband George Ernst, died in 1947 and one son Irvin, predeceased her in 1945.

The funeral was held in the Dreisinger Funeral Chapel, Elmira, Monday at 3 p.m. with Rev. H. L. Simpson of Gale Presbyterian Church officiat- ing. Burial was in the Elmira Cemetery. The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor.

John Detweiler was born in Canada, October 1, 1857. He came to Michigan with his parents when 8 years old. He lived the greater part of his natural life near Caledonia. He married Martha Nogles. To this union were given seven children; of this number three survive: Ephraim of Grand Rapids, Freeman and Mrs. Harvey Shook of Caledonia, Michigan. His second marriage was with Sarah Warner, who with two brothers, three sisters, and six grandchildren,survive. The funeral services were conducted from the United Brethren Church in Caledonia. The body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Holy Corners. The Rev. C. L. Snyder officiated.

He was blessed with good health, never having required the services of a physician during his lifetime, until about 10 months ago his health began to fail and about 4 months ago, after a doctor's examination it was discovered that cancer had developed. When a young man he joined the Mennonite Church and was faithful to the end. In 1882 he married Elizabeth Leinbach. This union was blessed with 5 children. One son preceded him to death in 1911. There remain to mourn his passing his widow and 4 children (Amanda Wilson of Kingman, Alta.; Noah of Limon, Colo.; Aaron of New Paris, Ind.; Malinda Dettwiler at home); also 1 brother (Abraham, of St. Jacobs, Ont.), and 1 sister (Elizabeth of Goshen, Ind.), 15 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. Three sisters and 2 brothers preceded him in death. At the age of 3 he moved to Michigan with his parents and lived there until 1910, when he moved to Youngstown, Alta., with his family. In 1924 he moved to Kingman, Alta., at which place he lived until his death. He had a deep desire for spiritual things, always attending the place of worship whenever it was possible to do so. Funeral services were conducted in the home and at the Salem Mennonite Church, Nov. 12. Services in charge of Bros. M. D. Stutzman and J. B. Stauffer. Texts, Rev. 14: 15; Psa.36: 9. Burial in near-by cemetery.

Dettwiler, was born near Floradale, Ont., Oct. 20, 1862; died at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital, Kitchener, Ont., after a brief illness, May 4, 1949; aged 86 y. 6 m. 14 d. He spent some of his early years in Michigan, took up residence in St. Jacobs, Ont., in 1913 and lived there until his death. On March 12, 1893, he was united in marriage to Veronica Sauder, who preceded him in death nearly twelve years ago. To this union were born 8 children, 3 of whom died in infancy. Surviving are 3 daughters (Sevilla, St. Jacobs, Ont.; Mrs. Annie Ramer. Markham, Ont.; and Laura-Mrs. Eden Cressman, St. Jacobs), 2 sons (Enos, West Montrose, Ont.; and Reuben, Floradale, Ont.), one sister (Mrs. Elizabeth Culp, Wakarusa, Ind.), 16 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. He was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church from his youth. Funeral services were held at the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church on May 6, in charge of Roy S. Koch.

Meno L. Lippert

Menno L. Lippert of 90 Union Blvd. died Friday at K-W Hospital after a brief illness. He was 91.

A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lippert, he was born Dec. 22, 1876, at Hanover and lived in Kitchener for the past 35 years.

He retired in 1945? after being employed by Uniroyal for 43? years. Mr. Lippert was a member of Calvary United Church.

He was predeceased by his wife, the former Clara Weber, five brothers and one sister. Surviving are three daughters Mrs. Harold (Della) Smith of Kitchener, Mrs. Howard (Ruby) Ballantyne of St. Catharines, and Mrs. Grant (Marjorie) Norcress of St. Lambert, Que.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

The body is at Edward R. Good Funeral Home where service will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m., by Dr. J. V. Dolons? of Calvary United Church. Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery.

BOWMAN.-On Apr. 9th, 1902, at Berlin, Ont., Sister Barbara Koch beloved wife of Jonas L. Bowman, aged 39 Y., 1 M., and 26 D. She had been confined to her bed for several months with dropsy and for the last few weeks with a complication of diseases. Toward the last her sufferings were great. The last few days she sang with her friends of her departure, and when unable to sing she requested others to do so. At times she gave forth expressions of joy, praise and prayer. She leaves a sorrowing husband and four children. May there be a reuniting of them all with two children who have preceded her. Services at the house were conducted by Daniel Wismer, and at the United Brethren Church by E. S. Hallman, text, Psa. 23: 4, and by Noah Stauffer, text, Rev. 21: 4, 5. Her remains were interred in the C. Eby Mennonite cemetery.

Surviving are 5 sons and 1 daughter (Lincoln Koch, Conestoga; Earl, Lorner, Floyd, Walter, and Mrs. Lloyd Martin). Three brothers (Menno of Winterbourne, Charles of Conestoga, Norman of Kitchener), and 4 sisters (Mrs. Ben Musselman of Kitchener, Mrs. S. Stauffer of Glenallen, Mrs. Titus Hallman of Rochester, N. Y., and Mrs. George Reist of Rosedale) also survive. He was widely known in his community, and much used by his fellow citizens. It is to be appreciated, that at the end of a long life, he realized his need of a Savior, definitely received Jesus Christ, and was received into the fellowship of the Mennonite Church. SOLOMON KOCH was born in 1864, receiving his schooling at Conestogo. He is a farmer by occupation, and has for the past nine years de-voted his attention quite particularly to raising live stock. He has been a member of Woolwich Township Council for the past six years.

SOLOMON KOCH.

Here is quite an enterprising young farmer and one who takes a deep interest in whatever he undertakes on the farm. He is the eldest son of Daniel Koch, of whom be has the farm leased. It was on this farm that his grandfather, the Rev. Ludwig Koch, lived and died, and who cut down the first tree on the place. Mrs. Koch is a daughter of Jonas Snider, near Bloomingdale. They have now two interesting little children. The farm contains 156 acres and is one among the most fertile in this section and has abundance of pure spring water the year round. Last year Mr. Koch produced 2,800 bushels of grain and seventy loads of hay, and since January last sold thirty-four head fat hogs. In the latter line he makes a specialty, having on hand frequently as high as fifty or seventy five head. He has also turned out quite a number of splendid export cattle the past season. Last season be purchased a large engine and thresher of the latest improved type from the Waterloo Manufacturing Co, which is capable of threshing out six bushels. of grain per minute if a test is necessary. The dust eradication is one of its valuable features, which carries the dust out beyond the stack, leaving the interior of the barn almost entirely free from disagreeable effects in this respect. Mr. Koch is also an admirer of fine horses and when he undertakes. to fit up a team for the prize ring he usually succeeds in carrying off the first premium, as he has on several occasions taken a number of first prizes He is now fitting up a span of blacks, both splendid animals. It will be in the nature of a surprise to me if there is anything in this section that will beat them for a general carriage or hearse team. He has a Standone bred mare from Loraine that is a fine animal, and has also a pacer that is capable of covering a mile in less than three minutes. In looking over his stock I also noticed quite a number of Shropshire sheep. Mr. Koch is a member of the Farmers' Institute, and a director of the Elmira Agricultural Society. He will not be found in the background when encouragement is necessary for anything that may be introduced which has for its purpose the benefiting of the farmers and the and the community in general. A short chat with him will convince any one that he is deeply interested in everything pertaining to good farming.

Solomon Koch

CONESTOGO. Following a lengthy illness, Solomon Koch, R.R. 2, Waterloo, passed away Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital, the result of a stroke. Mr. Koch, who was born near Conestogo, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Koch, was in his 73rd year. He had farmed in this district for many years.

Surviving are five sons and one daughter, Lincoln Koch, Conestogo, Earl, Lorne, Floyd and Walter, all of Kitchener, and Mrs. Lloyd Martin, also of Kitchener. Three brothers, Menno Koch, Winterbourne, Charles of Conestogo, Nor- man of Kitchener, and four sisters, Mrs. Ben Musselman, Kitchener, Mrs. S. Stauffer, Glenallen, Mrs. Titus Hallman, Rochester, N.Y., and Mrs. George Reist, Rosedale, also survive. Mr. Koch was predeceased by his wife in March of 1927, and one daughter, Mrs. Noah Geil, Kitchener, in December, 1932.

The funeral was held on Monday.

CHARLES R. KOCH

Charles R. Koch, 77, of R.R. 2. Waterloo, died Saturday at the K-W Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Conestogo March 16, 1878, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Koch. Mr Koch farmed until 1941 when he retired. He was a member of St. Jacobs Mennonite Church.

In 1904 he married the former Menerva Swartz, who died in 1954. He was also predeceased by one son, Stanley, in 1941; six brothers and two sisters.

Surviving are six sons, Lester and Orton of New Hamburg: Phares of Kitchener, Oliver of Conestogo. Roy of St Jacobs and Charles of Listowel; three daughters, Mrs. Herbert (Mabel) Kufske of Kitchener, Mrs. Norman (Gladys) Martin of St. Jacobs and Mrs. Nelson (Vera) Snyder of R.R. 2, Waterloo; three sisters, Mrs. Leah Musselman of Kitchener, Mrs. George Reist of Rosedale and Mrs. Titus Hallman of Rochester; 40 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A private funeral was conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m., at the Nelson Snyder home, R.R. 2. Waterloo, followed by a public memorial service in St. Jacobs Mennonite Church. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery with Rev. Howard S. Bauman, Bishop Oliver Snider and Noah Hunsberger officiating.

The body was removed from the Dreisinger Funeral Par- lor, Elmira, Monday and taken to the Snyder home.

The body was at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until noon Monday when removal was made to St. Jacobs Mennonite Church for funeral service at 3 p. m. Rev. Glenn Brubacher officiated. Burial was in Si Jacobs Mennonite cemetery.

Flash from the Past: Waterloo trucking firm also sold ice from Silver Lake

For most of four decades, A. H. Foell & Co. was a major trucking firm in the north half of today's Waterloo Region. It also sold blocks of "clean, natural ice" that it cut from Silver Lake in Waterloo Park.

Last week's "mystery" photo, taken by Ernest Denton of Kitchener in 1930, shows part of the firm's Waterloo home base at 43-47 Avondale St. S., (then Victoria Street South) just west of the downtown. It also had a storefront office at 16 King St. N.

A half dozen readers phoned or sent emails identifying the site in the photo. Wilbert Sommers of Kitchener, who grew up nearby, said he was in the Foell garage several times as a boy. And Gerry Fischer of Waterloo knew the site because he long ago delivered Record newspapers on the street.

This is only the right side of Denton's photo. The complete image (there wasn't space to publish it all) shows an equal number of vehicles on the left side.

The big house in the picture (not a Foell property) is still there. But the old Foell garage on the left was long ago replaced by a small apartment building. You would never guess today that this residential street, from about 1919 to the late 1950s, held a trucking firm that at its peak had two dozen vehicles.

Addison Henry Foell, the founder, lived at 47 Avondale (Victoria) in a house that's still standing. According to his nephew, Don Foell, 81, of Waterloo, Addison got initial financing from his father, Samuel, who insisted that another son, Don's father, Alvin, help to manage the firm. A third brother, John, was also very involved.

Alvin's family lived at 44 Dunbar Rd. S. (then Charles Street South), which backed on to Addison's property on Avondale. Close by at 72 Dunbar (then Charles), Koch Transport, now based in Cambridge, was started by Wilfred and Elvina Koch in 1924.

Don Foell was just 11 months old when the Denton photo was taken, but A.H. Foell & Co. quickly became a big part of his life, as it was for many of his siblings and cousins.

"We were driving trucks when we were 10 years old," he recalled in an interview.

Laverne Foell of Huntsville, Ont., one of Addison's sons, sent an email describing his boyhood years.

""It was so exciting to grow up in that environment . . . There were so many exciting things happening every day, with primitive equipment breakdowns, tire blow outs, construction activity, horses, harvesting ice, accidents, mechanics fixing trucks, loading and unloading freight, moving household furniture, picking up mail for the post office, accompanying drivers on trips and listening to their adventures."

For years, A. H. Foell & Co. had the only PCV (public commercial vehicle) licences for hauling freight to London, Ont., and to Toronto, where it had a warehouse and two trucks. It also had the only permit for handling household moves to out-of-town sites. Plus one for carrying heavy equipment.

"In my day, there were trucks leaving Waterloo at least twice a day to Toronto and one going to London," Don Foell said.

There was no Highway 401 in those years and trucks weren't as durable as they are now. Foell recalled an Ottawa trip his father made in the firm's 1928 Gotfredson truck.

"He started with six tires and only one of them lasted for the entire trip."

In town, Foell drivers did everything from picking up mailbox contents for the Waterloo post office to delivering food orders from the York Trading Co. wholesale grocery at King and Madison streets in Kitchener. They carried loads for the Snyder's Furniture Co. and hauled machinery made at the Waterloo Manufacturing Co.

Don Foell recalled unloading flour from boxcars at the Waterloo train station on Regina Street (then Queen Street) and delivering it to Henderson's Bakery.

"We'd be as white as you could get when we were done, just covered in flour."

Some short trips were made by horse and wagon. One of the firm's horses, Pete, was an old Waterloo firehall horse, Don Foell said. If you were on the road and a fire alarm sounded, Pete would head for the firehall.

"You could not stop him."

At Silver Lake, A.H. Foell & Co. had a three-storey insulated building to store huge ice blocks cut from the lake with a mobile saw powered by an old Model T Ford. A second Model T powered a conveyor belt that lifted the blocks into the building.

"As kids we sometimes stood on those blocks of ice in the water and floated on them to the conveyor belt," said Don Foell, who still has a nine-metre pole with a steel hook that was used to move ice blocks.

Addison Foell was a man who enjoyed "any physical challenges he could find," Laverne Foell wrote.

"As my father got older he hired a manager to look after routine aspects of the business so he could spend more time with the heavy equipment challenges. He moved massive punch presses that required a lot of ingenuity to move and erect on site - often requiring the demolition of walls and innovative use of jacks and pulley systems. He also moved houses."

As time passed, A.H. Foell & Co. gradually sold its various licences to rival firms. The heavy equipment licence was the last to be sold. The firm ceased operations not long after Addison Foell's death in May 1954.

Don Foell remained in Waterloo. When he retired in 1988, he was superintendent of planning and construction for the Waterloo County Board of Education, now the Waterloo Region District School Board. Laverne Foell is now retired as a Toronto Dominion Bank manager in Huntsville.

Dettwiler, -- Reuben, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. A. K. Dettwiler, of St. Jacobs, Ont., was born in Brutus, Mich., July 6, 1901; passed away Jan. 16, 1951; aged 49 y. 6 m. 10 d. On Dec. 12, 1923, he was united in marriage to Ella Weber. He leaves to mourn his departure his loving companion, 3 children (Fern-Mrs. Osiah Horst, Manheim, Ont.; Leeta-Mrs. Melvin Horst, West Montrose, Ont.; and Gladys, at home), also 4 grandchildren, 1 brother (Enos, West Montrose), 3 sisters (Mrs. Annie Ramer, Markham, Ont.; Laura-Mrs. Eden Cresssman, and Sevilla, both of St. Jacobs.), and a wide circle of relatives and friends. His death was caused by an attack of pneumonia and a stroke caused by an attack of pneumonia and a stroke. He was ordained to the office of deacon at Elmira, Ont., Dec. 15, 1929; five years later Nov. 11, 1934, he was ordained a minister; May 11, 1947, he was ordained a bishop. The funeral was held Jan. 19 at Dreisinger's Funeral Chapel, conducted by Moses Roth, followed by a service at the Floradale Church with O. D. Snider and J. B. Martin in charge. Interment was made in the adjoining church.

Laura (Dettwiler) Cressman, in her 103rd year, of Chateau Gardens, Elmira, died peacefully on Friday, October 17, 2008. She has gone to join her dear husband, Eden Cressman (1975) and infant daughter, Beatrice (1934). She was the mother of Naomi and Milt Shoemaker of Elmira, Mary and Marshall Musselman of St. Jacobs, Violet Martin of Floradale, Calvin and Janice Cressman of Elmira. She was the proud grandmother to three generations of grandchildren. She is also survived by many of her extended family. Reuben Dettwiler; two sisters, Sevilla Dettwiler and Annie Ramer; three brothers in infancy; three great-grandchildren; and son-in-law, Lloyd Martin. CLAYTON J. REIST - son of George and Elizabeth (Koch) Reist of Rosendale, was born in the Conestoga area October 25, 1894. He was 10 years old when the family moved into the Bloomingdale-Rosendale area. He assisted with the market gardening and worked at various places until 1917 when he went to the Canadian North West on a harvest excursion and worked in the grain field s at Calgary, Alberta. From, there he went to Ocean Falls, B.C. where he was employed as a pipe fitter in a paper mill for seventeen years. He was a foreman here for twelve years and returned to Rosendale.....

KOCH, Ralph E. -- At St. Mary's Hospital, on Monday, Jan. 13, 1975, after a brief illness Ralph Edwin Koch, of 128 King St. N., Waterloo, age 79 years. Mr. Koch was born in Conestoga; a son of the late Menno Koch and the former Anna Ritter. Mr. Koch was a resident of the Twin City area all his life; he farmed near Winterbourne, operated a well drilling company and founded and operated Koch Milling Company located on Queen St. S. in Kitchener until it was sold and is now known as the Kissner Milling Company.

He was predeceased by his wife the former Eleanor Snyder in 1961; by two sisters, Mrs. Alberta Donnely and Erma Koch; surviving are four daughters, Mildred (Mrs. Howard Snyder), Shirley (Mrs. Roy Weber), both of Kitchener, Muriel (Mrs. Eric Misch) and Dorothy, Mrs. Robert Ruggle), both of Waterloo;

four sisters, Pearl (Mrs H.K. Kalbfleisch) of London, Ont., Clara (Mrs. Frank Moralt) of Elgin Ill, Mrs. Alma Bergman and Edna (Mrs. William Asmussen), both of Kitchener; by five brothers Wilfred of Waterloo, Fred of Hamilton, Marshal of Wasaga Beach, Kenneth of Kincardine and Hary of California; five grandchildren also survive, Elizabeth Snyder, Mrs. Susan Callan, Philip and Mark Weber, and Robbie Ruggie.

Koch. - Forrest Koch, son of David R. and Lovina Koch, was born near Conestoga, Ont., May 28, 1914; died at his home in Elmira, Ont., Aug. 19, 1934; aged 20 y. 2 m. 21 d. He is survived by his parents, 2 brothers (Elvin and Howard of Elmira), 3 sisters (Mrs. Henry Seiling of Elmira, Mrs. Noah Zeigler of West Montrose, and Lenora at home). One brother (Manly) predeceased him 7 years ago at the age of 15, now Forrest too at the age of 20 years has passed on to his eternal home. Just why two such promising young boys should be called from their loved ones so early in life we cannot understand now, but God knows best. Both were Christian young men; Bro. Forrest had accepted Christ 7 years ago and remained faithful until he was called home after an illness of 5 days, although he had not been in the best of health for some time. One of his last wishes was that he might soon be drinking from the fountain of living water in heaven.

I now from pain am free;
And in my Jesus' arms I rest
Where I have longed to be."

Funeral services were held Aug. 21, at Elmira Mennonite Church by Bros. Moses Brubacher and Elmer D. Snider. Interment in adjoining Cemetery.

STANLEY KOCH

The death occurred at the K-W hospital on Sunday morning, May 18, at 11 o'clock, of Mr. Stanley Koch, 36, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Koch of Conestogo. The departed underwent an appendicitis operation on Tuesday, May 6, and from this he failed to rally. He was born at Conestogo on the Koch homestead on Jan. 30, 1905. His wife, the former Ruth Kufske, and a daughter Mary survive as well as his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Koch, six brothers, three sisters, Lester of Kitchener, Phares, Orton, Oliver, Roy and Charles of Conestogo, Mabel, Mrs. Herb Kufske of Williamsburg, Gladys, Mrs. Norman Mar-tin of St. Jacobs, and Vera, Mrs. Nelson Snyder of near Conestogo. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon with a brief private service at the home of his parents at 2 o'clock, after which public services were held at the Mennonite church at St. Jacobs with burial in the Mennonite cemetery near Three Bridges. Rev. Oliver Snider was in charm of the service, while Bishop C. F. Derstine of Kitchener delivered the sermon. The remains rested at Dreisinger's Funeral chapel, Elmira, until Monday evening and then rested at the Letter and Dreisinger Funeral Home until Tuesday afternoon when they were brought to his parents' home.

KOCH, Oliver S. (1912-2008) - After a long and full life, Oliver died peacefully, on Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at Caressant Care, Fergus and is at Home in the presence of his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. His family takes great comfort in the knowledge that he is now enjoying the beauties of Heaven and being able to see his Saviour face-to-face. Oliver was predeceased by his beloved wife, Violet (Biehn) Koch in 2002, shortly after celebrating 62 years of marriage. He will be missed by his family, Glen and Phoebe Koch of Elmira and Marlene and Murray Losch of Alma. He especially had a heart for mission work among our native Indians in the North and was always available to help in any way he could. Dad and Mom together had an extended "family" in supporting children through World Vision. Dad very much enjoyed children and many will remember him for the entertainment he provided on their rides to and from school. He was also involved in sales both at Snyder Milling in Waterloo and B&M Farm Equipment, Elmira. Dad was a storehouse of quips and weather-related sayings. Farmers Almanac has now lost their competition! Oliver's family will welcome friends and relatives at the Dreisinger Funeral Home , Elmira on Thursday, January 31, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. On Friday at 11 a.m. transfer will be made to Countryside Mennonite Fellowship, Hawkesville, for funeral service at 1: 30 p.m. with Ron Shantz officiating, followed by interment in St. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery. In his memory, donations to Christian Aid Ministries or World Vision would be appreciated by the family as expressions of sympathy. We give our loved one back to God, and just as He first gave him to us and did not lose him in the giving, so we have not lost him in returning him to Him... for life is eternal and love is immortal.

Roy was born near St. Jacobs, Ontario, Sept. 6, 1913, to Charles and Minerva (Swartz) Koch. The seventh of 10 children he is survived by a sister Gladys Martin, Elmira, Ontario.

He married Martha Horst Aug. 8, 1942. She survives along with six children, Robert (Linda Epp) Koch, Colorado Springs, Arlene (Ken) Holdeman, Bloomington, Minn., Richard (Rhonda Peck) Koch, Goshen, Rodney Koch, Salem, Ore., Jane (Stanley) Oyer, Middlebury, Sheila (Millard) Graber, Goshen; 18 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six brothers; two sisters; and granddaughter, Joyce Graber.

A graduate of the University of Western Ontario, at Waterloo, and Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, he was a churchman all his adult life, ordained as a pastor in 1936, at age 23, and as a bishop in 1951. In addition to pastoring congregations for more than 34 years, he was a teacher, administrator, writer, editor and development officer. He preached well into his 90s.

In Ontario, he pastored St. Jacobs Mennonite Church from 1936 to 1957. From 1957 to 1970 he served at South Union Mennonite Church in West Liberty, Ohio. He also filled the bishop's role in Ontario and Ohio, overseeing and mentoring. While pastoring in Ontario, he also taught at the Ontario Mennonite Bible School and Institute in Kitchener during the '40s and '50s, serving as its principal from 1952 to 1957. He frequently travelled as a speaker, evangelist and story-teller, in Canada and the States. He wrote numerous articles for church and secular papers, served as editor of the "ministers' section" of the Builder, and of the Mennonite Renewal Services Newsletter. He wrote several pamphlets and edited the book-length "My Personal Pentecost" with his wife for Herald Press in 1977.

He filled many posts as administrator and committeeman while living in Ohio and, after 1970, in Indiana. He served as Moderator of the Ohio and Eastern Conference in the 1960s, and as Moderator of Mennonite General Conference from 1963-1965. He served on the Mennonite Church's Board of Missions, Board of Education and Commission for Christian Education. In the early 1970s, he was Indiana-Michigan Conference Minister, and then development director for Bethany Christian High School in Goshen. He was subsequently Executive Secretary of Mennonite Renewal Services well into the 1980s.

In his 70s, he did several stints as interim pastor, and graded Bible studies of prison inmates for Gospel Echoes Team in Goshen, into his 90s.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at East Goshen Mennonite Church, Goshen, where a 9: 30 a.m., funeral service will be held on Wednesday, with Pastor Steve Slagel officiating. MARTIN, Gladys (Koch) On June 20, 2010 in her 95th year her journey has ended in a glorious eternity. A resident of St. Jacobs for 70 years, she spent the last two years at Leisureworld in Elmira. On June 1, 1938 she married Norman B. Martin who predeceased her in 2001. Their six children are: Winston and Betty Ann of Stratford, Raymond and Elinor of Elmira, Isabel and Jim Bauman of Elmira, Bernice Brubacher (Richard 2000) of St. Jacobs, Elaine and Clair Stoltzfus of Paisley, and Edith and Mark Edmiston of Wiarton. The family will receive friends and relatives at the Dreisinger Funeral Home in Elmira on Tuesday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and on Wednesday at St. Jacobs Mennonite Church from 10 a.m. until the funeral service time of 11 a.m. with Pastors Mark Diller Harder and Kevin Derksen officiating.
