George Eby, "the fourth son of George Eby and his wife, Barbara Sensenig, was born May 8th, 1776, and was married, April 1st, 1797, to Barbara Wenger who was born in the year 1780 and died in September, 1834. In 1804 they moved from Pennsylvania to Canada. They were accompanied by his elder brother, Samuel, and a few others. He took up part of lot No. 1, German Company's Tract, in the township and county of Waterloo. The farm is now owned by Jacob B. Shantz. They had a family of eleven children"

How More German Families Were Brought In

At that stage there was a further influx of German hand-workers. In the main they came from Hesse, with sprinklings from Baden, Saxony. Mecklenburg, and other States. Woodworkers predominated. The Dorf however boasted a weaver, wagonmaker, hatmaker. a tailor (John Nahrgang), two shoemakers, and several carpenters, while Anselm Wagner, potter, made shilling crocks and flowerpots for the Hausfrau. King Street , North Side

Frederick Street.

Bishop Benjamin Eby's farm came to the corner of King and Frederick Streets. Next to Frederick Street, Frederick and William Miller erected a frame building and used it as a general store. After the grading operations spoken of this building had to undergo the same process as the St. Nicholas Hotel. It was considered a fine building in its day with large windows on each side of the centre door. Henry Stroh finally bought the building and tore it down in 1868. Jacob Stroh has some of the window sash, shutters, stairway, etc., still in his possession. Later the building was occupied by Jacob Eckstein cigar maker and tobacco dealer. Mrs. Warren with a family lived on the second story for a number of years.

Vacant lot. Next a large brick building with double deck porch along the front, the Queen's Arms Hotel, built about 1840 and continued as a hotel until about 1860. A Mr. Butchard was the first landlord and later Levi Weber. From this hotel the first omnibus met the trains at the G.T.R. station in Berlin in 1856. Before that day it was a stopping place of stage coaches operating from Hamilton and Galt to Berlin and beyond. The old Queen's Arms long vacant and practically ruined as a building was sold finally and made room for the Market Building and Town Hall in 1869.*

Next we come to the John Roos house. This also had a double-deck veranda with heavy posts as was the style 1840-50. The building was later turned into a hotel known as the Market Hotel and kept by Casper Heller.

A lot with a log cabin in the rear, occupied by Jacob Sauer, who had come from Pennsylvania, father of Mrs. John Roat.

A harness shop occupied by John Roat, then by his son John and later by John Haugh, a son-in-law of John Roat.

A garden. A dwelling, 4 or 5 feet lower than the street which had been filled up, where lived the Susand family. Mrs. Susand had a reputation with juveniles for tarts and molasses taffy sold in lc. bars. Her children were in the habit of selling these wares to passengers at the G.T.R. station. After her husband's death about 1860, widow Susand moved her shop to Foundry Street North, and there continued until she died. Susand was an ex-slave. In 1857 at a nomination meeting for Council, he was nominated and stood a good chance of being elected, as a joke. However, the more thoughtful element among the voters prevailed.

A two story, frame building, lengthwise with King Street, built in the '30's. After street grading this had to be raised so that what had before been the ground floor became the cellar or basement.

A house occupied by Wm. Hawke,-known as Bill Hawke- a mason. A stout, easy-going man. His wife was in the habit of standing in the door way, with white lace cap, smoking a clay pipe. The east end of this building was occupied by Winters, a hatter, the first hat maker in Berlin. He made the old style, broad brim, Mennonite hats in fashion up to about 1845. At the corner of Scott stood a brick building of good size with gable toward King Street, used to stable the first fire teams for a number of years. Later John Wagner had a waggon shop above and George Ward a blacksmith shop underneath. Scott Street was, however, not opened until many years later.

A one and one-half story building rough cast, gable facing King St., occupied by H. W. Peterson, who began publishing the "Canada Museum", in 1835 and so continued until 1840 when he went to Guelph as first Registrar of the County of Wellington. This was the first newspaper published in Waterloo County.

Jacob Hailer's house, a one and one-half story, frame building with porch along the front partly enclosed by lattice work. In this house was born in 1834, Catherine Hailer, who married Louis Breithaupt. She is said to have been the first child born in Berlin of parents who came from Germany. Hailer's barn was some distance back from the street and next along on the street front was his shop where he manufactured spinning wheels, etc., and chairs which had a large distribution. Hailer was an expert wood turner. He had two foot-power lathes and a number of German assistants from time to time, continuing his shop for about 40 years.

A two story frame building lengthwise with King Street, erected by Dr. John Scott. He had a drug store with two good-sized windows at the front. On the east gable of the building was a sign, "Med. Hall" in large letters. The sign was legible long after Dr. Scott's death. The doctor pursued his practice on horseback for which he used three horses. He was the first medical practitioner in Berlin, coming in 1834, at the time of the cholera epidemic. For a few years before he was married he boarded at the Gaukel Hotel. His later house, after the one described, is still standing on Weber Street at the rear of the Kitchener Public Library.

The old Scott house on King Street was later occupied by Franz Martin who kept a saloon. Martin had a musical family, with the zither as their principal instrument, which all the children could play.

A one and one-half story, frame building, painted, occupied by Anslm Wagner, a potter.

A brick building 1 ½ story lengthwise with King Street, the west end of which was John Eby's drug store, the rest of the building being his dwelling. This was the first regular drug store in Berlin.

A brick building with a frame extension in the rear used by David Eby as a pump shop. Part of the brick building is still standing, the rest having been cut off for the opening of Eby Street North.

A one story hip roof brick cottage occupied by Geo. Eby, a Notary, who came to Canada in 1804. He died in this house. A considerable fish story is told of how he followed a sturgeon in the Conestoga River, part of Grand River, and finally speared it.

A one and one-half story building, probably rough cast, occupied by Hy. Wurm, a carpenter employed at the Simpson factory.

A handsome brick building, two story, with veranda along the front and ground floor considerably above the street level, with broad steps, the width of the building, leading to it, was built in 1850. Some time later it was occupied by Casper Heller and known as the Royal Exchange hotel. Following the old custom its swinging sign had "Last Chance" on the side toward the village and "First Chance" outward, referring to liquid refreshments. Heller kept a good hotel and had also a large shed and ham next east of the hotel.

On the corner a steam grist mill was erected, about 1860. Louis Seyler, a German, was the miller. The custom was for farmers to bring in their wheat to have it ground, getting in return flour, bran and middlings, the miller retaining his toll. Later Lehnen & Shelly operated this mill.

EBY.-On the 24th of March, in St. Jacobs, Waterloo county, Ontario, of old age, Peter Eby, aged 83 years. He was a member of the Mennonite church and was buried at Martin's Meeting-house on the 26 th., in the presence of many relatives and friends.

John Eby, "the third son of George Eby, was born In Pennsylvania, November 6th, 1803. He was probably 6 months old when he came to Canada. It is supposed that he started the first drug store in the town of Berlin, Ontario. He used to bring his goods from Buffalo, New York, by team. He resided in the town of Berlin for about 70 years, then he moved to Elmira where he lived for 12 years, and several years ago he moved to Port Elgin where some of his family reside. Here he died October 22nd, 1891. He was married twice, first to Veronica Weber who was born July 19th, 1808, and died December 10th, 1837, and after the decease of his first wife he was married to Philipina Fischer who was born March 14th, 1811, and died in Listowel with her daughter, Mrs. Joshua Bowman, January 17th, 1894. His family consisted of the following children"

Part I. Settlement - Early Villagers and BuildingsThe first settlers in Waterloo Township had large farms, four hundred acres and over, the lot sub-divisions of the German Company Tract. Joseph Schneider settled on Queen Street South, Bishop Benjamin Eby at the south-east side , Abram Weber on the corner of King and Wilmot Streets and David Weber in the neighborhood of the later Grand Trunk Railway station. After the railway was built David Weber moved to Weber Street, named after him, to a location opposite the present Zion Church. Samuel Schneider and Elias Schneider settled in Waterloo. John Brubacher arrived from Pennsylvania in 1816 and took up his lot of the German Company Tract which was in the district of the County House of Refuge.

Throughout the county here and there little settlements consisting of a few houses, a blacksmith shop, perhaps a tavern and probably a cooper shop and weaver shop, began to appear. Only those settlements which had possible water-powers had any hope of growing to villages or towns. Preston, Galt, Bridgeport and Waterloo were in this class.

For a long time the vicinity of Berlin was known as the sand-hills. In the locality where the hospital and Collegiate Institute now stand were hills over which loaded wagons could hardly be drawn. On a windy day the sand would form ridges. There was a troublesome sand-hill from Queen Street eastward on Church and another one at the corner of King and Frederick Streets. This latter was cut down about eight or nine feet to the level of the cellar floors, some time after the first buildings had been erected.

The easterly part of the settlement was known as Ben Eby's. Queen Street South was the Schneider road.

1830 the village centre was established by Phineas Varnum who, by permission of Joseph Schneider, started a blacksmith shop on the site of the present Walper House. A moderately sized house, 35' by 25', about 40' southwest of the blacksmith shop, was used as a tavern. In the same year the first store in the settlement was opened by William, David and Frederick Miller on the site of the present Post Office,

There were few houses in the hamlet until a number of immigrants arrived directly from Germany, after 1820. John Eby, druggist and chemist, who had his shop a little west of the present Eby Street, related that when immigrants arrived it was the custom, such was the scarcity of buildings, to form a "bee" including farmers and villagers, to erect log houses for the new-comers. A number of these primitive dwellings were in the locality of the present Post Office. It is related that after one of these bees, the company being assembled in Varnum's blacksmith shop or tavern, the proposal was made that the hamlet should be given a name and someone suggested Berlin in honor of the German immigrants. The suggestion was joyously received. Jacob Stroh's mother, adopted in 1827 by Abram Weber when she was three years old, often told Mr. Stroh of her remembrance of the day when Mr. Weber, who had assisted at the bee, came home and told how the little hamlet had that day received the name of Berlin. This occurred probably in 1833. Mr. Stroh has a document dated 1833 in which Berlin first appears as the name of the hamlet. H. W. Peterson, publisher of the "Canada Museum", the first newspaper in the county, from 1835-1840, is authority that in 1835 there were only 25 dwellings in the place.

King Street, Queen Street and Frederick Street, being the main entrances from the surrounding country, were from the beginning the principal streets of the village. These streets are not normal with points of the compass. King Street changes direction several times. At the C.N.R. crossing its direction is about northwest, at an angle with the railway of about 45 degrees. It keeps on turning and finally in the main part of Waterloo it runs due north and south. Queen Street and Frederick Street are approximately at right angles to King Street. Conventionally King Street is called east and west from Queen Street, and Queen Street north and south from King Street. Particulars of the buildings and occupants for these streets follow:

After the decease of his first wife he was again married, February 22nd, 1854, to Ann Robinson who was born September 28th, 1822, and died July 16th, 1855. After her decease he was married a third time, to Christina Hoffer who was born March 23rd, 1828. He resided in Berlin for many years, then he moved to Elmira, where he died.."

How More German Families Were Brought In

At that stage there was a further influx of German hand-workers. In the main they came from Hesse, with sprinklings from Baden, Saxony. Mecklenburg, and other States. Woodworkers predominated. The Dorf however boasted a weaver, wagonmaker, hatmaker. a tailor (John Nahrgang), two shoemakers, and several carpenters, while Anselm Wagner, potter, made shilling crocks and flowerpots for the Hausfrau. A Dr. Klinkert was the first doctor

King Street , North Side

Frederick Street.

Bishop Benjamin Eby's farm came to the corner of King and Frederick Streets. Next to Frederick Street, Frederick and William Miller erected a frame building and used it as a general store. After the grading operations spoken of this building had to undergo the same process as the St. Nicholas Hotel. It was considered a fine building in its day with large windows on each side of the centre door. Henry Stroh finally bought the building and tore it down in 1868. Jacob Stroh has some of the window sash, shutters, stairway, etc., still in his possession. Later the building was occupied by Jacob Eckstein cigar maker and tobacco dealer. Mrs. Warren with a family lived on the second story for a number of years.

Vacant lot. Next a large brick building with double deck porch along the front, the Queen's Arms Hotel, built about 1840 and continued as a hotel until about 1860. A Mr. Butchard was the first landlord and later Levi Weber. From this hotel the first omnibus met the trains at the G.T.R. station in Berlin in 1856. Before that day it was a stopping place of stage coaches operating from Hamilton and Galt to Berlin and beyond. The old Queen's Arms long vacant and practically ruined as a building was sold finally and made room for the Market Building and Town Hall in 1869.*

Next we come to the John Roos house. This also had a double-deck veranda with heavy posts as was the style 1840-50. The building was later turned into a hotel known as the Market Hotel and kept by Casper Heller.

A lot with a log cabin in the rear, occupied by Jacob Sauer, who had come from Pennsylvania, father of Mrs. John Roat.

A harness shop occupied by John Roat, then by his son John and later by John Haugh, a son-in-law of John Roat.

A garden. A dwelling, 4 or 5 feet lower than the street which had been filled up, where lived the Susand family. Mrs. Susand had a reputation with juveniles for tarts and molasses taffy sold in lc. bars. Her children were in the habit of selling these wares to passengers at the G.T.R. station. After her husband's death about 1860, widow Susand moved her shop to Foundry Street North, and there continued until she died. Susand was an ex-slave. In 1857 at a nomination meeting for Council, he was nominated and stood a good chance of being elected, as a joke. However, the more thoughtful element among the voters prevailed.

A two story, frame building, lengthwise with King Street, built in the '30's. After street grading this had to be raised so that what had before been the ground floor became the cellar or basement.

A house occupied by Wm. Hawke,-known as Bill Hawke- a mason. A stout, easy-going man. His wife was in the habit of standing in the door way, with white lace cap, smoking a clay pipe. The east end of this building was occupied by Winters, a hatter, the first hat maker in Berlin. He made the old style, broad brim, Mennonite hats in fashion up to about 1845. At the corner of Scott stood a brick building of good size with gable toward King Street, used to stable the first fire teams for a number of years. Later John Wagner had a waggon shop above and George Ward a blacksmith shop underneath. Scott Street was, however, not opened until many years later.

A one and one-half story building rough cast, gable facing King St., occupied by H. W. Peterson, who began publishing the "Canada Museum", in 1835 and so continued until 1840 when he went to Guelph as first Registrar of the County of Wellington. This was the first newspaper published in Waterloo County.

Jacob Hailer's house, a one and one-half story, frame building with porch along the front partly enclosed by lattice work. In this house was born in 1834, Catherine Hailer, who married Louis Breithaupt. She is said to have been the first child born in Berlin of parents who came from Germany. Hailer's barn was some distance back from the street and next along on the street front was his shop where he manufactured spinning wheels, etc., and chairs which had a large distribution. Hailer was an expert wood turner. He had two foot-power lathes and a number of German assistants from time to time, continuing his shop for about 40 years.

A two story frame building lengthwise with King Street, erected by Dr. John Scott. He had a drug store with two good-sized windows at the front. On the east gable of the building was a sign, "Med. Hall" in large letters. The sign was legible long after Dr. Scott's death. The doctor pursued his practice on horseback for which he used three horses. He was the first medical practitioner in Berlin, coming in 1834, at the time of the cholera epidemic. For a few years before he was married he boarded at the Gaukel Hotel. His later house, after the one described, is still standing on Weber Street at the rear of the Kitchener Public Library.

The old Scott house on King Street was later occupied by Franz Martin who kept a saloon. Martin had a musical family, with the zither as their principal instrument, which all the children could play.

A one and one-half story, frame building, painted, occupied by Anslm Wagner, a potter.

A brick building 1 ½ story lengthwise with King Street, the west end of which was John Eby's drug store, the rest of the building being his dwelling. This was the first regular drug store in Berlin.

A brick building with a frame extension in the rear used by David Eby as a pump shop. Part of the brick building is still standing, the rest having been cut off for the opening of Eby Street North.

A one story hip roof brick cottage occupied by Geo. Eby, a Notary, who came to Canada in 1804. He died in this house. A considerable fish story is told of how he followed a sturgeon in the Conestoga River, part of Grand River, and finally speared it.

A one and one-half story building, probably rough cast, occupied by Hy. Wurm, a carpenter employed at the Simpson factory.

A handsome brick building, two story, with veranda along the front and ground floor considerably above the street level, with broad steps, the width of the building, leading to it, was built in 1850. Some time later it was occupied by Casper Heller and known as the Royal Exchange hotel. Following the old custom its swinging sign had "Last Chance" on the side toward the village and "First Chance" outward, referring to liquid refreshments. Heller kept a good hotel and had also a large shed and ham next east of the hotel.

On the corner a steam grist mill was erected, about 1860. Louis Seyler, a German, was the miller. The custom was for farmers to bring in their wheat to have it ground, getting in return flour, bran and middlings, the miller retaining his toll. Later Lehnen & Shelly operated this mill.

Barbara Ann (Eby) Michels was born in Pennsylvania the daughter of George W. Eby and Elizabeth (Nafcher) Eby. She is the sister of Henry Eby born November 14, 1822, Elizabeth Eby born June 9, 1827, Martha Lena Eby born July 9, 1829, Sarah Eby born April 24, 1834, Harriet Eby born February 1, 1836, and George William Eby born December 12, 1839. Her father moved from Pennsylvania to Waterloo Township, Ontario, Canada with his parents in 1804 and he must have traveled back and forth as his children were born in Pennsylvania. While Barbara was born in Pennsylvania, she must have visited relatives in Canada as she married Mathias Michels there at age 16 and was living in Hay Township, Huron County, Ontario, Canada sometime before 1840 when their first son Absolom was born. They lived in Canada till sometime after their twins Harriet and Isabel were born 1859. They moved and immigrated to St Clair County, Michigan in 1859 and another child Mary was born there. Prior to 1862 they moved to Bangor, Geneva Township, Van Buren County, Michigan. They had 14 natural born children and one adopted child. Nine of the children were born in Canada, one in Lynn Township, St Clair County, Michigan, and three born and one adopted in Bangor, Geneva Township, Van Buren County, Michigan. They lived on a 40 acre farm in Geneva Township on the South Side. The Michels and Eby families were identified with the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Canada as Barbara's Grandfather was a Reverend there.

Weidman. -Barbara (Eby) Weidman was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., June 15, 1828; died Sept. 4, 1918; age 90 y. 2 m. 18 d. On Dec. 21, 1847 she was married to Henry Weidman. They lived in Woolwich township a number of years, then moved to Hay township, Huron Co., Ont., on a farm where they resided until the death of her husband in May, 1897. In the same year she moved to Huron Co., Mich., and had her home with her children. She is survived by six children (Elias, Moses, Menno, Mrs. Magadalena Reist, Henry and Mrs. Lydia Detweiler). One son preceded her in death. There are also living 30 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, one sister and four brothers. Her health was failing for the last six months. Her desire for the last few years was to go to Jesus. The funeral was conducted on Sept. 7 by Bro. Menno Eash. Buried in the Bern Mennonite Cemetery.

THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE

An interesting meeting took place the Saturday before last in the old log cabin in Waterloo Park.

This house was, of course, the first schoolhouse in this area and stood originally on the school-house square at the corner of King and Church Streets in Waterloo. It was built in 1820 and served its purpose until 1842, when it was torn down and a 1-storey stone house was constructed on the site. The dismantled log house was erected again in Greenbush and served as a residence for a long time for the coloured man, Mr. Carroll and his family. In the course of this year, the Waterloo Park Commissioners purchased the house, moved it to their park and furnished it again as it was when it was a school-house.

Mr. Burkholder gave an interesting talk about the history of the old school-house, and after him, Rev. J.A. MacLachlan, Rev. J. McNair, Mr. J.E. Baumann, M.P., and Mr. Jakob Ratz spoke about the old days which brought many things out of the past to mind again. School was, as a rule, only in session in winter and the costs were borne by the parents of the children. There were few subjects taught, namely: Reading, Writing and Sums. The children heard little about language, and geography; no child had more than 2 or 3 books. The predominant language was German. The pupils learned to read and write English, but didn't understand a word of it. Among the teachers in the old school-house from 1820-1842, with the exception of Mr. Burkholder, were the following whose names are still recognized: Jephtha DeKay, Joseph Guth, John Herringer, Peter Otto, John Dobbin, Elias Eby, Robert Barber, & Joseph Eby.

After those present, on hearing the various speeches felt themselves transported back to the past, the school was closed at four o'clock and the pupils were gathered together in front of the school and photographed as a group. On their return into the school, they found it had been transformed into a dining room with heavily-laden tables, which the old-timers thoroughly enjoyed. After everyone had chatted cordially for a while longer, the gathering broke up. The company will not meet again in complete numbers, nor in such a way.

Death of Mrs. Seibert - The death occurred on Thursday of Mrs. Elizabeth Seibert, relict of the late Jacob Seibert, who died several months ago. The deceased was in her 81st year and has been ill for some weeks. She has been residing with her son, Jacob S. Seibert, Albert Street. The funeral will take place on Saturday at 2 o'clock from her son's residence, Albert Street, to the Bridgeport Cemetery.

Henry F. Eby Died Monday

Served Term as Postmaster at Nappanee During Cleveland's Administration.

Henry F. Eby, aged 78 years 10 months and 6 days. One of the oldest and best known citizens of Nappanee, died Monday morning at 9: 15 o'clock at his home on E. Market Street, after a short illness.

Mr. Eby, who was born in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, on September 12, 1842 was brought to this country in 1857 by his parents, John W. and Veronica Eby, who settled in the Jones school house district near the southwest portion of Concord township. The parents, both natives of Pennsylvania, had spent a part of their career in Canada.

Mr. Eby in young manhood resided at Locke for some time, a town that was laid out in 1867 by his brother George Eby, and others, and he remained there some time after there was an exodus to Nappanee, following this town's establishment in 1875-6. However, he also became a resident of this growing community.

WAS FIRST FREIGHT AGENT.

Mr. Eby was the first B.&O. freight agent in Nappanee, when the Town was called Locke. His office was in an old freight car. He was afterwards engaged in the furniture and undertaking business for some time.

NAMED NAPPANEE.

With his brother, George Eby, he was instrumental in naming the town of Nappanee. Before a name was selected for this station by the B.&O. railroad, many wished to have the name of West Locke used. Mr. Eby and his brother had come from Nappanee, Canada, and they were influential in having this name chosen. This is a historical fact that will be of interest to many who have resided here but a few years and probably often wondered from where the town derived it name.

APPOINTED POSTMASTER BY CLEVELAND.

During Cleveland's administration he was appointed postmaster, a postion he filled very acceptably for three and one-half years.
Practically all the time since, until a short time before his death, he was employed by local industries as a cabinet maker and carver.
He was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Slabaugh, at Locke, in April 1865. She died about thirty-five years ago. Prior to her death they had moved to Nappanee. During his term as postmaster he was united in marriage with Mrs. Mary Helman. To this union were born three daughters, Eunice, Lula and Ethel. He is survivied by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. W. W. Kinney and Miss Lula; two step sons, Oliver and Charles E. Helman of Elkhart; also the family of a deceased step daughter, Mrs. Hugh Brevler; one sister, Mrs. Philip Cress of Philips, Wis., and one half brother, Moses Eby of Brampton, Ont., and many other relatives.
Early in life he became a member of the United Bretheren Church and about fifteen years ago untied with the St. John's Lutheren Church of Nappanee, in which he was a faithful worker until his death.
Funeral services were held from St. John's Lutheren Church, Tuesday afternoon at 3: 30 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Wm. Boatman. Interment was in the South Union Cemetery under the direction of undertaker A. E. Wright.

FORMER BERLIN BOY PASSES TO GREAT BEYOND
JOSEPH FISCHER EBY DIED IN TORONTO YESTERDAY.

His Father Conducted First Drugstore In The County, and Was Known As "Apothecary" John W. Eby.

A dispatch in the Toronto Mail aud Empire this morning has the following: "A leading figure in the wholesale grocery world of the city passed away today in the death of Mr. Joseph F. Eby, of the firm of Eby. Blain Company. Limited, who died of pneumonia at his residence. 35 Cluny Avenue.

Deceased was born in Berlin. Ont. in 1844. He engaged in the wholesale grocery business, first of all in the firm of Howland and Fitch. Later as a member of the firm of Fitch and Eby, and withdrew from that firm to commence operations with Mr. Hugh Blain in the firm which has existed up to the present for 35 years."

Mr. Allan Huber, at one time mayor of Berlin, who is now in the Berlin and Waterloo Hospital suffering with a sore foot, was seen this, morning in regard to the above dispatch, and he said. "Mr. Joseph Fischer Eby dead. Why I knew him as well as I knew my own father. His father was 'Apothecary John W. Eby, who kept the first drug store in Waterloo County, at a place called Bucks Hill. and Later in the city of Berlin. His mother was Miss Christina Fischer, a noble woman. the noted midwife and German doctor of her day.

For a while. Joseph served his time with Abram Tyson, in a grocery store near where the American Hotel now stands, Soon after, he entered the store of Mr. Wm. Spiers, where Metcalfe Bros, store now stands, and here he laid the foundation of his career.

He was here until, at about 20 years of a age, when he left for Toronto, and I am sorry to learn of his death.

Joseph was born, as near as I can recolleet, near where Eassys store now stands on East King street, not far from where Mr. Hallman's grocery store formerly stood. He was considered a model boy, and everyone liked li him for his kindly manner."

Mr. Joseph F. Eby.

The death of Mr. Joseph F. Eby removes one of the best-known men in the wholesale grocery trade of Toronto.

Mr. Eby was taken ill last Wednesday, but his ailment had not been thought serious until pneumonia set in towards the end of the week, and death came yesterday at his residence, 35 Cluny avenue. The funeral will take place to-morrow to Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Born in Berlin, Ont., in 1844, he commenced his business career in the retail grocery trade. Later he was engaged in the wholesale grocery business with the firm of Howland & Fitch. He was afterwards a member of the firm of Fitch & Eby, and withdrew from that firm to go into partnership with Mr. Hugh Blain, with whom he had remained for the last 34 years. In his long commercial life he enjoyed the respect and confidence not only of his associates, but of his competitors.

He was one of the earliest members. of the Toronto Board of Trade. "While he had always been one of those silent members," said Secretary F. G. Morley last night, "he never lost sight of the importance of many issues. He might be regarded as one of the original members. While he was offered official positions in the gift of the association, he always declined them, though offering to render whatever assistance he could."

Mr. Eby married Miss Emily Jane MeMurtry, of Bowmanville, who survives him, together with two sons. Mr. H. Douglas Eby and Mr. W. P. Eby, and two daughters, Mrs. J. H. Woods. Calgary, and Mrs. Wm. Find- lay. Ottawa.

Mr. Eby was an ardent Liberal, and a member of Old St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the National and Ontario Clubs, and president of the Fire Insurance Exchange.

"He was a faithful partner and a true friend," said Mr. Hugh Blain, "and I think everyone who knew him would say the same."

The Life of George Eby,
The man who named Nappanee, IN.

George Eby was born in Ohio, the year is unknown. He had two (2) brothers, Samuel and Henry and a sister who married and went to Wisconsin. When George was a young man he came to the small village that was to become Nappanee for a short time, then going to Goshen. From Goshen, he then moved to a small village, which he named after a man who had a small store, "Locke." George stayed in Locke and built a sawmill, with the help of a couple of partners. George's first wife had died by this time and left him with a daughter named Lydia. Lydia married and moved to Wisconsin and had two sons. She and her sons died in Wisconsin

Nappanee at this time was called Locke Station and wanting to change the name, George was asked to give it a name. George was unable to attend the meeting for naming the town, so he sent 4 men to the meeting with the name he had choosen, "Nappanee."

At about this time, he married Catherine Stull, They had one (1) son, George Henry Eby Jr. When George Jr. was about a year old, George Sr. wanted to sell his share of the sawmill to his partners and go west. George was was a speculator and saw a possibilty for making money out west. So George, leaving his wife and son, took his share of the money and went to Dodge City, Iowa, (it was said he named Dodge City also, but there is no proof of this). In Dodge City, he is said to have built a hotel. George had been sending money home to his wife and son on a regular basis, and had intended to send for them. Catherine stayed behind because of their baby. At some point he met a group of missionaries that were supposed to be going to Mexico to build a Church, so he sold his hotel and decided to go with them to Mexico. From here on, George was never heard from again.

When George Jr. grew up, he decided to go in search of his father. He went west and then to Mexico, but found no trace of his father any where, in the US or Mexico. George Jr. has since passed away, but there is a Grandson, George, living in Kalamzoo, MI.

Bowman.-- Catharine Eby, widow of the late Isaac Bowman, was born in Berlin, Ont., in 1830; died July 6, 1909; aged 79 y. 1 m. 2 d. She is survived by five sons and four daughters. She was a faithful sister in the Mennonite Church. Funeral services were conducted in the Berlin Mennonite Church, by Noah Stauffer and Simon Swartz. Text, Psa. 16: 11 and Mark 14: 8. Buried in cemetery near Hagy Church.

Brubacher.-Magdalena Eby Brubacher was born July 22, 1831, near Kitchener, Ont. Oct. 15, 1926, she peacefully passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Reuben Eby, St. Jacobs, Ont.; aged 95 y. 2 m. 23 d. She had been able to be up and around till nearly 17 months ago when she took her bed and since she was never able to be up. Sept. 28, 1856, she was married to Jacob M. Brubacher who preceded her in death Dec. 10, 1889. This union was blessed with 3 sons and 2 daughters, of whom 1 son preceded her in infancy and Martin 19 months ago. Those left to mourn her departure are: Mrs. Christian Schiefle, and Mrs. Reuben Eby, St. Jacobs, Ont.; William H., of Rodney, Ont.; also one step-sister, Mrs. Phillip Cress, Phillips, Wis.; 23 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Oct. 17, at the Old Order Mennonite Church, Conestoga, and at the Riverside cemetery for burial. Funeral services were conducted by Urias Martin ant the house and by Israel Weber and Ezra Martin at the Church. Texts, I Pet. 3: 4; I Thess. 4: 13.

Probably the best-known Mennonite potter of the region was William K. Eby. Eby, whose father Potter Sam taught the trade to him and his brother Cyrus, bought 10 acres of land with an existing pottery on it a half-mile south of Conestoga where he established the region's longest-running pottery business, Conestogo Pottery.

Death of William Eby - Mr. William Eby an aged and respected resident of the County passed away Thursday evening at 6:30 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Tobias Martin, near Waterloo, aged 80 years.

The funeral was held on Sunday morning at nine o'clock from the residence of Mr. Tobias Martin, 4 miles west of Waterloo, to Martin's meeting house for service and burial.

The late Mr. Eby, who is a brother of Mrs. Adam Klippert, Waterloo was born July 11th, 1831 and was married to Susannah Detweiler who survives. Until a few years ago he carried on a potter trade near Conestogo, when he retired and has since made his with his daughter, Mrs. Martin who survives. Of a family of nine children seven survive, viz: - Mary (Mrs. Owen B. Snyder); Amanda (Mrs. Tobias Martin); Henry, Cyrus, Susannah (Mrs. Menno B. Hoffman); Annie and William.

WILLIAM K. EBY.

Here is a familiar character in this section. He was born on the old Eby homestead (now the property of William Scheifle and where the latter lives), on July 31, 1831. He has lived in the vicinity of Conestogo all his life excepting two yeara that he was working at his trade in Markham. He learned the pottery trade with his father, the late Samuel Eby in Waterloo, years before he had reached maturity. At that time Waterloo contained only one store kept by Daniel Snider. He also recollects the time when not a building stood upon the present site of Conestogo. His father was familiarly known as "Potter Sam" to distinguish him from other relations of the same name. Another was called "Indian Sam," he being a popular trader among the Indians. The subject of my sketch was married, when twenty two years of age, in 1853, to Susinnah Detweiler, who was born August 8, 1832 They had nine children. He is of Swiss descent, his grandfather, the late George Eby, coming from Pennsylvania to Canada, where his father, Samuel M. Eby, was born in 1805. Mr. Eby has been a resident of Conestogo for about forty years. Here he has conducted his pottery and tilled his small farm of ten acres. He is an expert mechanic in his trade and can turn out almost anything in the pottery line, has now on hand quite a number of fine specimens of his handiwork, and disposes of a large amount of his work in the course of a year. His memory is remarkably keen and he is not averse to imparting information regarding the early days of this section to an interested listener.

Mrs. Wm. Echtnacher(sic), Pioneer of City, Dies at Chicago, Aged 77 Scarce three months after the death of her aged husband, who died here in January, Mrs. Elizabeth Echtnacher, a pioneer settler of Manitowoc, died at Chicago where she made her home with her children and the body was brought here today for burial at Evergreen Cemetery, the funeral being held from the Northwestern depot at 1:20. Mrs. Echtnacher was the widow of the late William Echtnacher and with her husband celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of their marriage at their home on Washington Street last fall. Mr. Echtnacher died in January and his wife removed to Chicago to make her home with a daughter where her death occurred. Mrs. Echtnacher had been a resident of Manitowoc for more than half a century and was widely known and her death will bring sorrow to many friends who knew her as a woman of kindly nature and a true friends. Seven children, five daughters and two sons survive to mourn her
demise.

Death of Mrs A. Klippert

The death occurred at 9 o'clock Saturday evening of Mrs. Klippert, wife of Mr. Adam Klippert, and one of the oldest residents of our town, aged 63 years, 2 months and 15 days. Deceased had been ill for several months with jaundice but her end came rather suddenly caused by hemmorage of the stomach. Mrs. Klippert, nee Leah Eby, was the daughter of Mr. Sam Eby and was born near Conestogo in 1839. She spent all her days in Berlin and Waterloo. She was married to Mr. Klippert in 1857. The fruits of this marriage were eight children, three of whom predeceased her. A sorrowing husband, four sons and one daughter are left to mourn her death. She was a consistent and faithful member of the Evangelical Association. Her death is the third in her fanily inside of three months, a sister and a brother having died recently. The funeral of the late Mrs. Klippert, held Tuesday afternoon, was attended by a large number of friends. The services were conducted by Rev. Mr. [the rest isn't legible]..

Rev. Solomon Eby, "the eldest in the family, was born May 15th, 1834. When a young man he joined the Old Mennonite Church, of which body, some years thereafter, he was ordained minister. Some twenty years ago, on account of some difference of opinion between him and the authorities of the church, he was separated from that body, and afterwards became one of the instruments in the organization of what is at present known as the church of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ, usually called New Mennonites, of which body he was the first Presiding Elder. He was re-elected as Presiding Elder for quite a number of years in succession, but at present he is stationed on the Bethel, Ontario, field of labor where he is doing a grand work for the Lord. As a minister he has few superiors, speaks in both languages, and his sermons are full of life and spirit, refreshing to souls craving for spiritual manna. Many have been brought from darkness unto light through his labors. May he prove faithful unto the end, and when done here receive that crown of glory promised to all who do the Lord's will. He is married to Catharine Shantz and has had a family of twelve children, of whom six are dead. Eby, Solomon (1834-1931)

Solomon Eby (15 May 1834-1931) was one of the founders of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church (now Evangelical Missionary Church), the son of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Cressman) Eby. He was born May 15, 1834 in Waterloo Co., ON, was raised on the farm, and attended public school. On June 17, 1855 he married Catharine Shantz, and they had 12 children. He moved to Port Elgin, ON.

In 1858 he was ordained to the ministry in the Mennonite Church, and served in that capacity for 14 years. According to his testimony, he was not converted until eleven years after his ordination (1869, Port Elgin, ON). Following his conversion he became a zealous advocate for a definite religious experience. Eventually he was expelled from the Mennonite Church, and in 1874 he and Daniel Brenneman of Indiana organized the Reformed Mennonites, a group that later became a part of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church (now the Evangelical Missionary Church).

For various terms totaling 18 years Eby was presiding elder in the Ontario Conference, and for 14 years he served as pastor, holding pastorates at Breslau, Elmwood, New Dundee, Markham, and Kitchener circuits. He was a member of the first six general conferences, and was chairman of the first one (Zionsville, PA, 1885). Eby retired from active work in 1906. A few years later he became interested in the Pentecostal movement, and in 1912 he transferred his membership to that organization. He died in 1931.

Wanner Mennonite Church
Begun: 1829

A small wooden meeting house was built in 1829 on a corner of the farm belonging to Samuel Bechtel which was located in the vicinity of the present-day regional headquarters of the Ministry of Natural Resources near the intersection of Highways 24 and 401. The site for this community meeting house, as well as a school and a burial ground, had been chosen on August 8, 1829. The land was donated by Samuel Bechtel and his wife Barbara (Baumann) on March 15, 1830. A new meeting house, of white brick, was built in 1837 on the east side of Henry Wanner's farm, somewhat north of the first meeting house. Meetings at first were held every eight weeks. The deed of land for the meeting house known as Wanner's was dated October 15, 1837. Early preachers were David Sherk, who had been ordained by Benjamin Eby in July 1837, Jacob Bretz, Jr., and Joseph Hagey.

Joseph Hagey was ordained bishop in 1851. During his time divisions occurred in the church by a surge of enthusiasm for a Methodist form of revivalism. Solomon Eby of Port Elgin, who announced his own conversion in December 1869, was leader of a group which believed that members could be converted through participation in revival meetings. John Baer of Wanner's became associated with Solomon Eby, and was compelled to leave the church in the spring of 1874, as were Eby and his other followers. The new church movement resulted in organization conferences which culminated in the conference on March 23, 1875 at Bloomingdale where New Mennonites and Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites joined together as United Mennonites. The United Mennonites favored revival meetings, Sunday Schools and prayer meetings, and were opposed to the use of alcohol and tobacco.

The date of construction of the meeting house which replaced the one built in 1837 is somewhat in doubt. It is possible that a new building was erected in the early 1870s; it is also possible that the 1837 building only underwent extensive renovations at that time. There is no doubt, however, that a new brown brick church was built in 1938. An education wing was added in 1969.

The earliest Mennonite Sunday School in North America was begun in 1842 and was held jointly by the Wanner and Hagey Meeting Houses. It was discontinued after a short time because of a division of opinion within the congregations. An attempt was made later, in the mid-1860s, to begin another Sunday School, but this, too, did not last long. Many years later, on June 10, 1896, a meeting was held to organize a Sunday School. Bloomingdale (Schneider or Snyder) Mennonite Church

Services began in 1824, and in 1826 a first meeting house, known as Schneider's or Snyder's, was built northwest of Bloomingdale, and east of the Grand River, on land (part Lot 7) donated by Jacob Schneider. Henry Weber was the first minister to this congregation, from 1824 until 1854. He was followed by Moses Erb who was ordained minister to the congregation on April 14, 1854. The church building was primarily used as a school in the beginning; the first teacher was John Bauman from Pennsylvania. Church services were held in homes. Dorothy Sauder, in her 1972 history of the church, states that "Prior to 1860, Schneider's was the only [Mennonite] place of worship on the Grand River and, until the 1889 Martin schism, it was one with the Martin congregation with ministers serving both groups" (Sauder 1972: 8). Services were held on a two-week schedule, at one meeting house and then at the other.

Snyder's was affected by division in the church in the early 1870s. The majority of the congregation joined the Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites, a group organized by Solomon Eby on May 15, 1874, and from 1875-1879 the meeting house was used almost exclusively by them. It was here that the conference was held on March 23, 1875 in which the New Mennonites and the Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites joined together as the United Mennonites. However, because the original deed to the church property had been lost or perhaps never duly executed, a new deed was drawn up on January 15, 1879, giving ownership of building and property to the group of more conservative Mennonites in the congregation.

The present church was built in 1878 on approximately the same site as the first meeting house. Renovations to the church building were carried out in 1951. One main entrance, to replace the two separate entrances, was part of the changes made. Further improvements were made in 1985. The name of the church is now Bloomingdale Mennonite Church.

Breslau Missionary Church

Meetings are reported to have been held in 1872 in a building at the corner of Woolwich Street and Mader Lane by a group who were followers of Solomon Eby. Conferences to consider reorganization of the church were held in 1874 and 1875, the most important of which was considered to have been the meeting at the Bloomingdale Mennonite Church on May 23, 1875. Members of the New Mennonites and the Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites joined together at that meeting as the United Mennonites. At a meeting in Blair in 1879 a union, called the Evangelical United Mennonites, was formed from the United Mennonites and the Evangelical Mennonites. Four years later, in 1883, the Ohio Brethren in Christ (Tunker) joined with the Evangelical United Mennonites to form the Mennonite Brethren in Christ.

Dedication services were held on Christmas Day, 1882, for the new Breslau Mennonite Church which had been built during the year. Henry Goudie was minister to the congregation from 1881-1884. He was followed by Peter Geiger (1884-1885) and Frank Moyer (1885-1886). Solomon Eby, a member of the congregation who was minister from 1886-1889, had been one of the organizers on May 15, 1874 of the Reforming Mennonites.

On May 6, 1959 a decision was made to construct an 1800 square foot addition to the church. The sanctuary was enlarged and new pews were installed in 1978; dedication was in September of that year. Rev. Leonard DeWitt, president of the Missionary Church was guest speaker on Sunday, November 21, 1982, when the church's 100th Anniversary service was held. Of interest: the sign eteched in the glass above the doors on the northwest side of the back section reads "United Missionary Church."

Pioneer Minister Dies At Kitchener

Another link with the pioneer history of Waterloo County was severed when Rev. Solomon Eby, one of the founders of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church, and Kitchener's oldest minister died in his 97th year. Death occurred after a comparatively short illness. Until a year ago deceased was able to read the finest print without glasses.

Rev. Mr. Eby was born in 1834, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Eby, who settled in Waterloo County in 1804, coming here from Pennsylvania. He was ordained a minister in 1858 at the age of 24. He continued as a preacher in the Old Mennonite church until 1872, when he was excommunicated because of the radically different doctrines which he was promulgating at that time. When this occurred he gathered others who were of the same belief and formed the Mennonite Brethren in Christ Church. He was a leader in this church for years, serving 18 years as presiding elder of the Ontario Conference and filling pastorates at Breslau, Elmwood, Bethel, Markham and Kitchener. In 1912 he withdrew from this denomination, having embraced the doctrines of the Pentecostal Assembly, of which he was a member at the time of his death. He was an ordained minister for 78 years, but was not an active preacher for the past 15 years, although he frequently delivered short sermons and exhortations up to a year ago.

He is survived by four children, Josiah and Jeremiah, two sons; Miss Lydia and Mrs. John Kimmel, all of Kitchener.

Solomon H. Eby

Friends in Elmira were grieved to hear on Friday last of the death at St. Thomas, Ont., of Solomon H. Eby, well-known musician and brother-in-law of the late Dr. A. S. Vogt of Toronto and of other members of the Vogt family in Elmira. The late Mr. Eby, who was a former well-known citizen of Elmira, passed away at Victoria Hospital, London, after some four weeks' illness.

Mr. Vogt was born in Kitchener 77 years ago and after residing in Elmira, Boston and Montreal moved to St. Thomas nearly half a century ago and where he had since resided.

He was a member of the Knights of Pythias, the Independent Order of Foresters and a prominent worker in First United Church in St. Thomas. His wife, formerly Laura Vogt of Elmira, one daughter, Mrs. C. H. Byrnes, 55 St. Anne's Place, St. Thomas, a son, Oscar Eby, 28 Scott street, St. Thomas, one sister, Miss Maggie Eby, Grand Rapids, and two brothers, Menno .Eby of Southampton and Ed-ward Eby of Detroit, survive. Mrs. Eby's sister, Mrs. George Ruppel of Elmira, passed away only a few weeks ago.

The funeral was held from his late residence, St. Thomas, on Monday to St. Thomas cemetery. Rev. Dr. Mar.. tin officiated.

DEATH OF PETER CRESS

Ater an illness of only ten days, one of our pioneer residents, Mr. Peter Cress, passed away on Wednesday morning, March 30th, at his late home, King street south, at the age of 74 years, 6 months. Mr. Cress, who had lived in this neighborhood the most of his life, was a highly respected citizen who had endeared himself to a large circle of friends by his quiet and sociable manner. Besides a widow he leaves behind to mourn his loss one brother,. George, of Grand Rapids, and four sisters; Mrs. M. David, of Port Elgin, Mrs. Wagner, of Hanover, Mrs. Bowman, of Caledonia, Mich.,. and Mrs. Puttock, of Preston.'s The funeral service was held in the Evangelical Church on Saturday, Rev. C. G. Kaatz and Bishop Snider officiating, and was largely attended, The bereaved widow and friends have the sympathy. of the entire community,

Rev. John Eby Bowers, "the first member of the above family, was born October 18th, 1839, in Waterloo County, Ontario (then called Upper Canada). He lived on the 'old farm', two miles south-west of the town of Berlin, until he was eighteen years of age, and then went 'to town' and and became a shop-boy, or clerk, in a general store. In the year 1860 he named the home of his boyhood, 'Sweet Briar Farm', and the place has been known by this name ever since. He was engaged in the mercantile business for about six years, part of the time in the village of Bridgeport, afterwards in Berlin, and in the year 1867 closed up his affairs and moved to the West. He resided with his family in the state of Missouri for about three years; and also in the state of Kansas for the same length of time, where he followed the avocation of a book-keeper. During two years he held the position of clerk in the office of the United States District Court, for the Western District of Missouri, located at Jefferson City, the capital of the state. But finding that sedentary employment did not agree with his health, he retired from his position, and began to prepare himself to enter the ministry. At the age of twenty-one years Mr. Bowers had become a member of the Church of the New Jerusalem, commonly know as 'Swedenborgian', being baptized into that faith by the pastor of that church at Berlin, namely, the Rev. F. W. Tuerk. In the year 1870 he was licensed to preach, and he continued his preparations by close application to the study of the doctrine of his Church, according to the Word of God, under the direction of the late Rev. J. P. Stuart, the President of the Missouri Association of the New Jerusalem. And on May 11th, 1873, he was ordained into the ministry by the minister just mentioned, at Jefferson City, Missouri. In the months of June, 1873, he returned to Canada. In August of the same year he went to Pennsylvania, spent a few weeks in Allentown, in that State, and arrived in the city of Philadelphia, September 1st, 1873. He accepted a call from the Frankford Society of the New Church, in Philadelphia, and at once entered upon his duties as pastor, in which capacity he served for a space of about four years. His relations were pleasant, and he enjoyed his residence with the kind and hospitable people of the 'City of Brotherly Love'. Circumstances, however, brought about a change; and, under the guidance of the Divine Providence, the subject of this sketch was led to go to Toronto, Ontario, where he received a call to become the pastor of the New Church Society, and began his ministry in the month of October, 1877. He filled this position for two years; and then in October, 1879, began his labors as a General Missionary, and has continued as such up to the time of the present writing. For five years he travelled most of the time in the United States, devoting most of his labors to the State of Pennsylvania. He has, however, also visited many places in all the Northern States, as far south as Maryland and Virginia in the east, and as far west as Illinois and Minnesota. He has preached and lectured in no less that one hundred and twenty-five different places; that is, in thirteen States of the American Union and in Canada. He has sold many thousands of volumes of books and has distributed vast numbers of religious tracts, all of which contained the heavenly doctrines of the Church of the New Jerusalem; for the spreading abroad of the edifying literature of the Church, is a legitimate part of the uses performed by a missionary. In the course of his labors, this missionary has travelled an aggregate distance equal to three tours around our globe. There are few who are personally acquainted with as many different people in as many different localities. During the past six years Mr. Bowers has been employed as the missionary of the Canada Association of the new Church. He is still filling his post; and in connection with his work he visits a number of places in Michigan, spending a few weeks, or a month in that State every fall and spring. His experiences in life have been of a varied character, and well adapted to expand the thoughts and affections of the mind, to cultivate and deepen the sympathies toward all mankind, and especially toward those who are of the household of a true and living faith in God. Mr. Bowers has also accomplished something as an author. Many of his written sermons, in both the English and German languages, have been published in the Church periodicals; and in January, 1889, there was published, as the product of his pen, a neat volume of 185 pages, entitled: 'Missionary Talks on Subjects of New Church Doctrine'. The book has been well received and is being widely circulated in England, the United States and Canada. Mr. Bowers is married to Mary Seiler and resides in Toronto, Ontario. They have a family of four children".

After having acquired a fair common school education at home, he entered the Toronto University, choosing the Arts Course, from which in due course of time, he graduated with honors, the faculty conferring upon him the degree of B. A. He afterwards entered the Michigan University, at Ann Arbor, choosing the Medical Course. After his graduation from Michigan University, at which he stood a very creditable examination, he located at St. Peter, Minnesota, having been appointed Superintendent of the Insane Asylum at that place. From here he went to St. Paul, Minnesota, where he enjoyed a very lucrative practice. From here, after the decease of his father-in-law, Mr. Walbank, he moved to Duluth, Minnesota, where he is having an extensive practice in his profession. He is married to Kate Walbank and has had a family of two children, both of which died in infancy."

THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE

An interesting meeting took place the Saturday before last in the old log cabin in Waterloo Park.

This house was, of course, the first schoolhouse in this area and stood originally on the school-house square at the corner of King and Church Streets in Waterloo. It was built in 1820 and served its purpose until 1842, when it was torn down and a 1-storey stone house was constructed on the site. The dismantled log house was erected again in Greenbush and served as a residence for a long time for the coloured man, Mr. Carroll and his family. In the course of this year, the Waterloo Park Commissioners purchased the house, moved it to their park and furnished it again as it was when it was a school-house.

At this gathering, in addition to many other ladies and gentlemen, the following (male and female) former pupils attended, took their places on the benches, and were called to order by the 82-year-old teacher, Benjamin Burkholder, who held the scepter, or rather, the switch, from 1831 to 1842 in the old log-house: Joel Guth, 80 years old; Abraham Scherk, Blair, 79; Jakob Bricker, Waterloo, 77; Sarah Burkholder, nee Erb, Bridgeport, 75; Amos Weber, Berlin, 73; John C, Bricker, Hawksville, 71; Maria Erb, nee Quickfall, Norwich 69; David B. Mr. Burkholder gave an interesting talk about the history of the old school-house, and after him, Rev. J.A. MacLachlan, Rev. J. McNair, Mr. J.E. Baumann, M.P., and Mr. Jakob Ratz spoke about the old days which brought many things out of the past to mind again. School was, as a rule, only in session in winter and the costs were borne by the parents of the children. There were few subjects taught, namely: Reading, Writing and Sums. The children heard little about language, and geography; no child had more than 2 or 3 books. The predominant language was German. The pupils learned to read and write English, but didn't understand a word of it. Among the teachers in the old school-house from 1820-1842, with the exception of Mr. Burkholder, were the following whose names are still recognized: Jephtha DeKay, Joseph Guth, John Herringer, Peter Otto, John Dobbin, Elias Eby, Robert Barber, & Joseph Eby.

After those present, on hearing the various speeches felt themselves transported back to the past, the school was closed at four o'clock and the pupils were gathered together in front of the school and photographed as a group. On their return into the school, they found it had been transformed into a dining room with heavily-laden tables, which the old-timers thoroughly enjoyed. After everyone had chatted cordially for a while longer, the gathering broke up. The company will not meet again in complete numbers, nor in such a way.

Foundry Street (now Ontario Street).

Jacob and John Hoffman, brothers, who came from Pennsylvania, erected a furniture factory on the corner about 1840. It was a two story frame building extending along King St., had 25 to 30 employees and a 15 h.p. engine brought from Buffalo.

Eby's history gives John Hoffman as having come from Pennsylvania in 1825; Jacob, almost two years older, seems to have come before. They both worked at carpentry, etc., for a number of years before starting the factory in which enterprise they were assisted by Benjamin Eby. On the ridge of the factory roof there was a belfry with the only larger bell in Berlin. This bell served not only the factory but the village as well, pinging at 7 in the morning, at 12, at 1 and at 6 o'clock in the evening. It was used also as a fire bell and was tolled for funerals.

By some prank or spite the bell was stolen in 1850 before there was a night watchman at the factory, and disappeared for two or three years. Eventually it was found in a well at the comer of Duke and College Streets, put back in place on the Hoffman factory and later was taken to a belfry on the Simpson factory spoken of, where it was used until this factory was discontinued. It was then taken to the pavilion in Victoria Park and was melted down when the pavilion was destroyed by fire.

Behind the Hoffman factory there was a pond, about three feet deep, fed by a spring, the water being used for the factory boiler, etc. About 1860 a frame building, used by the firm for a warehouse, covered the site of the spring. Further back there was a saw mill, also a planing mill, the first of its kind in Berlin. A two story frame building extending along Foundry Street was later added to the factory and used as a turning shop. At the rear of this building was the factory boiler house.

Next to the factory on King Street there was a three story brick building. The ground floor was used as a store, called the Berlin Warehouse. Jacob Hoffman, who by this time was alone in the business, John having gone to Waterloo, announced himself as dealer in dry goods, groceries, hardware, china, glassware, crockery, and paint and oils and manufacturer of all kinds of furniture, also sash doors, etc., selling low for cash. An overhead passage way on a bridge connected the second stories of the factory and brick building. Over the store was the paint shop and in the rear a warehouse. Hoffman's store was later occupied by William Schmidt, son of Rev. Wm. Schmidt, an early minister of the Evangelical Church. Schmidt had a dry goods store only, known as the Golden Lion store because of a large gilt lion over the entrance. Isaac Hoffman, son of Jacob, carried on the factory and store for several years; later John S. Anthes was in possession while Hoffman went to Waterloo and continued the furniture business there with Adam Klippert and Martin Wegenast as partners. Jacob and John Hoffman erected a number of houses in Berlin.

Jacob Hoffman was very stout, weighing over 300 pounds. He was a member of the Evangelical Church. For a time he served on the village council. He resided on Foundry Street in the rear of the Canadian Block in a square, hip roof, two story, frame house, until it was destroyed by fire, when he moved to the west side of Foundry Street, south, where now is the Robe & Clothing Co. building. Here he had a one and one-half story frame house with a large two story addition at the rear where were lodged apprentices and other factory employees. There was a small portico over the front door and a porch extending along the northerly side of the house.

Next to the Hoffman warehouse there was a saloon and restaurant occupied by a Mr. Unger. He served, among other things, oysters which came in small wooden, 1-gal. kegs. Adjoining Hoffman's store there was the tailor shop of H. J. Nahrgang, later occupied by Henry Glebe, an early band master; next a store differently occupied at various times and next the shoe store of Wm. Niehaus. A three story brick building occupied by Wm. Young as a grocery. Mr. Young eventually went to the Canadian Block and the store was used for various purposes, among them auction sales in the evening. Here there was sold the first white crockery offered in Berlin. Later the building was occupied by the Berliner Journal.

A one and one-half story frame building with gable toward King St. and a veranda, occupied by Mr. Fuchs, a tailor and shoemaker, whose wife assisted her husband as expert in repairing clocks. The family lived in the building. About 1865 the frame building was moved to the rear and Fuchs' block erected on the street. The ground floor had three stores, the west one occupied by Mr. Fuchs, the middle by John Kayser, dry goods merchant, and the third one by Tindall Simpson and Sons, shoemakers and tailors. The first building on part of the Fuchs' block site was a rough frame structure used by one Susand, colored, who was the first barber in Berlin.

A two story brick building with gable facing King Street, occupied by Christian Garman, harness maker, who later moved to New Hamburg and started a tannery. This building was later occupied by Levi Gaukel, son of Frederick Gaukel, after his father's death. He had a small hotel known as The Red Lion. In 1860 Urban Prinzer succeeded Gaukel and continued the hotel for a short time.

A two and one-half story brick building with gable facing King St. was occupied by Levi Gaukel, as a butcher shop after he gave up the hotel next door. Jacob Gaukel was associated with Levi. Later George Debus occupied this shop.

On the corner of King and Queen Streets there was first a driving shed for the Gaukel hotel opposite, until the Bowman block was erected in 1860. This was a three story brick building lengthwise with King Street. Joseph Bowman the noted violinist occupied the third floor of this building. Half of the ground floor of the building was occupied by Henry B. Bowman with a partner Heins as general dry goods store. This was on the corner. The other half was a brick store occupied by Cole and Graf, druggists, and later by Wm. Bowman in the same business. On the site of the Bowman block is the handsome Bank building built by the Merchants Bank and now occupied by the Bank of Montreal.

Isaac Eby

Death came suddenly to a native of Waterloo County in the person of Isaac Eby who died at the home of his daughter. Mrs. Milton Cober, Bingeman street. Kitchener, on July 15, following a heart attack. Deceased was born in Waterloo County but later moved to Hanover, where he spent 30 years, returning to Kitchener five years ago. He was In his 82nd year.

There survive besides his wife, nee Elizabeth Bergey of Plattsville, to whom he was married 61 years ago. 5 son, and two daughters. Stephen Eby of Woodstock. Ill. Herbert of Hanover. Bertrum of Chesley, Edmond of Kitchener and Hugh of Pingree, North Dakota, Mrs. Edgar Schlimm of Listowel predeceased him last year. One brother. Mr. Moses Eby of Aurora. Ill. also survives. Also 21 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon from the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Parlors to Woodland cemetery for interment. Rev. N. H. Schwalm pastor of the Breslau M. B. C. Church was In charge of the Service.

McDONALD WOMAN DIES

Mrs. Caroline Krogel, 66, died Monday at her home near McDonald, after an illness of several years. She was born in Bangor, June 20, 1870, and spent her life in that community. Surviving her are her husband, Gottlieb Krogel, four sons, five daughters, 25 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral rites for her will be held Thursday morning, at 10 at Sherrod's chapel in Bangor, with burial in Arlington Hill cemetery.
