The house was a storey and a half but seemed to extend a long distance at the rear. How that large family was stowed away it is hard for us to guess, but there was always room for one more. There must have been Grandmother and Grandfather, four sons some of the time, several daughters not married yet, and two of Grandmother's sisters, and a niece came from Scotland -these were "Aunt Betsy" and "Aunt Steele" and Jennie Doak whose exact relationship I do not know.. Perhaps she was a cousin, rather than a niece of Grandmother whose mother's name had been Doak. Added to these came Sidney Smith who moved in with his little daughter Maria for a while when his wife Elizabeth Goldie (John's eldest daughter) died soon after the birth of this child who was brought up by the grandparents (and was later to marry James Anderson)

John was twenty-two when his famous Scottish botanist father, John Goldie, brought his family to Greenfield, near Ayr in 1844. In 1859, he and his business partner, Hugh McCulloch, purchased the Crombie Factory located in Galt, and renamed the factory Goldie-McCulloch Limited. As the business flourished, factory operations included the manufacturing of boilers, engines, flour, sawmill and wood-working machinery, safes and vaults.

Goldie served as the vice-president of the Hospital Trust, and he and McCulloch were able to provide the land and money needed to build the first hospital in Galt

John Goldie was born in Ayrshire and sent to school Kilroy near his home, but when young he apprenticed to James McNab a millwright. When he was 22 he emigrated to Canada with his family settling on Greenfield a farm near Ayr. He worked for George Baird a local contractor for over a year, then moved to Montreal where he worked for a 1 and half as a pattern maker. He returned to set up a small machine shop at his father's flour mill. He operated a saw mill in Esquesing Township for a number of years while doing work for James Crombie's Dumfries Foundry in Galt. He in 1859 purchased Crombie's mill in partnership with Hugh McCulloch. They formed Goldie-McCulloch Co. Ltd. which became one of the most successful manufacturers in Canada. He maintained is own observatory and member of the Astronomical Society of Ontario. Also he was involved with the Galt Mechanics Institute and vice-president of the Galt Hospital Trust.

The Goldie & McCulloch Co., Limited

There is no better known manufacturing establishment in the Dominion than that of the Goldie & McCulloch Co, Limited, of Galt. This business was originally established by Messrs. James Crombie & Co. in 1844, who were succeeded in 1859 by Messrs. Goldie & McCulloch. In 1891 a joint stock company with a capital stock of $700,000 was organized, the officers of the company being: Hugh McCulloch Sr., President; John Goldie, Manager; and Hugh McCulloch, Jr., Secretary-Treasurer. The buildings and plant of this extensive concern cover four and a half acres, and from three to four hundred men (according to requirements) are employed in the various departments of the works, whose earnings (paid every two weeks) mostly find their way into the coffers of the different traders of the town, adding not a little to the well-known general stability of the merchants of Galt. The general lines of machinery manufactured by The Goldie & McCulloch Co. are summarized thus: The Wheelock improved automatic slow speed engine and "Ideal" high speed engine, which they claim are unsurpassed by any other steam engines in use; Steam engines of various styles, adapted for every class of work; boilers and all modern appliances in connection therewith; wood-working machinery; flour, oatmeal and buckwheat machinery; wool machinery; saw-mill, shingle and stave machinery; turbine water wheels, all of the latest designs; fire-proof safes, bankers' safes, vault doors, etc., of every size. Circulars and particulars furnished on application.

The gentlemen who own and control this extensive establishment are personally so well known throughout the Dominion that little need to be said here respecting them. We may state, however, that Mr. Hugh McCulloch, and the late Mr. John Goldie, were both leading employees of Messrs. Crombie & Co., but Mr. McCulloch was the first to reach Galt in 1850. Since they assumed control of the business in 1859 their record has been one of continued success and progress, the result of their ability, energy and intelligent application to business, in conjunction with a fortunate combination of facilities adapted to specific fields of action. Nor have they given their attention wholly to personal affairs. Both gentlemen named have always taken an active interest in everything relating to the welfare of the community. In concluding this sketch, we would state that the relations between the proprietors and employed of the Dumfries Foundry have been almost invariably of the most pleasant and satisfactory character. All the members of the company are active and enterprising business men, liberal in their dealings with their employees and as members of society highly esteemed.

    Notes:

James Goldie, one of the leading flour manufacturers and dealers in Ontario, and president of the Ontario Millers' Association, is a son of John and Margaret (Smith) Goldie, and was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, November 6, 1824. His father is a famous botanist, known on both continents, and now living in Ayr, County of Waterloo, in this Province, being in his 88th year. He visited Canada and several of the States, more than sixty years ago, studying the flora in this western world; was at one time employed by the Czar of Russia to make botanical explorations, and to supply trees, plants and shrubs for the public gardens of St. Petersburg; wrote for thirty or forty years for botanical magazines, and had extensive correspondence with scientific men in Europe and America.

The maternal grandfather of our subject was also a botanist of Ayrshire, a student in his earlier years of Sir Joseph Banks.

James had a plain English education, with a smattering of the classics; was a nurseryman gardener and florist, in his younger years; in 1842 came to America, and was for several years in various kinds of business in New York and New Jersey. For awhile he was a florist in New York; subsequently had the management of the estate and large manufactories of R. L. Colt, deceased, of Patterson. N. J., and a little later was engaged in the lumber and flour traffic in Utica, N. Y.

In 1860, Mr. Goldie settled in Guelph, built a mill and commenced the manufacture of flour; sold that mill a few years afterwards, and rebuilt on another site, on a larger scale, and is now manufacturing about 75,000 or 80,000 barrels per annum. He also handles as much more, not of his own manufacture, finding a ready market mainly in the Maritime Provinces, and Great Britain. No better brands of flour are sent from Ontario, than are manufactured at his mills in Guelph. The Herald of this city thus speaks of this mill:

"Goldie's Mill is one of the important factors of Guelph's manufacturing and commercial prosperity, consuming immense quantities of wheat and disbursing large sums annually to our farmers for their grain; in the mill itself, in the cooper shops, and in the various departments of the business employing a large force of work men, it fills a sphere of usefulness and wields a power that accomplishes good to all classes.

"Over and over again it has been characterized as the model flouring mill of Canada, a verdict that facts abundantly sanction.

"Of machinery now in place, the best that the millwright's art could produce, has been purchased. Six run of stone are busily at work. Three double chests of bolts are performing their duties. Middlings purifiers, coolers, grain cleaning machinery, packing apparatus all the component parts of a first-class mill are to be seen.

Mr. Goldie is president of the Ontario Millers' Association, and he is well known among flour manufacturers in Great Britain and the United States, as well as throughout the Dominion of Canada.

He was in the council in the days when Guelph was a town; is one of the license commissioners for the south riding of Wellington, and a director of insurance companies in Guelph and Galt.

He is a Liberal Conservative, and in. 1876, and again in 1878, was the candidate of his party to represent the south riding of Wellington in the House of Commons, but the district is strongly Reform and he was defeated both times.

Mr. Goldie is a member and deacon of the Congregational church; a liberal contributor to church building funds of his own denomination and others, and to religious and charitable institutions generally.

In March, 1848, he married in New York, Miss Frances Owen, a native of Montgomery-shire, Wales, and of eight children, the fruit of this union, five, all sons, are living. Thomas, the eldest, has a family; the others are single. The three oldest are with their father in the milling business.

She was a sister of the late David Goldie of Ayr, Ont., and was a frequent visitor here, having, with her daughters, spent the entire summer in this village only a few years ago. Although a very active church worker, she was of a quiet and unassuming disposition, devoting most of her time to her family. She was the mother of ten children, six of whom - three sons and three daughters - are still living. They are Dr. James, Dr. W.F. and Dr. John Caven of Toronto, while her daughters are Mrs. W.A. Wilson, Mary and Jean. Mrs. Wilson is the wife of a Presbyterian missionary who, for many years, has been laboring in India. The funeral, which was private, took place on Monday from her late residence, 53 Farnham Ave., to Mount pleasant Cemetery, and was attended by several of the friends in Ayr.

    Notes:

There was no bank nearer than Galt in this early pioneer period. Highwaymen wandered the roads ready to rob such business men as David Goldie who had to drive 10 miles on lonely roads to deposit his cash from the mill. He refused to carry a gun but on one occasion a fearful neighbour handed him one for protection against the notorious Lou Mudge whose robber band worked out of his Black Horse Tavern at the corner where the Roseville Road was intersected by the Black Horse Road, now Highway 97. The presence of the gun on the seat beside him made his trip so miserable that he threw it in the bushes by the roadside on his return journey. But Father had nothing to fear as Lou Mudge assured him later when they met in the United States where Lou was vacationing from the law under an assumed name. When they were alone in the smoking car Lou thanked him for sending food to his mother whenever he abandoned her.

"About grandfather's leg she is not quite sure, but has understood he had an ulcer on his leg and complications developed when he spend so much time in the water when the raceway was built for the mill. We do not know when the leg was amputated, but it was done at Greenfield House before The Gore was built -1893 or earlier.

The story mother (aunt Anne Cleland) told me was that the operation was done on the kitchen table, and that grannie was given the leg and she threw it out the kitchen door, and Henry Elliot buried it.

Grandfather Goldie died of cancer of the stomach.

    Historic Building:
    Saying good-bye to The Gore

In 1883, David Goldie, his wife Isabella and their family, which eventually grew to nine children, decided to move from their home in Greenfield, to a property on the north limits of Ayr, purchased from James Robson. The next year a house was built for $18-20,000 dollars, from blueprints drawn up by William Welish. The mansion built had twenty-one rooms on three storeys and a widow's walk around the roof. The rooms consisted of a drawing room, front hall, back hall, dining room, kitchen, breakfast room, pantry, scullery, library (all on the first floor) and thirteen bedrooms.

David Goldie died in 1894, and his wife Isabella continued to care for the large house, until it was passed down to Esther Goldie Kilgour in 1937. It was then that the top two stories of the house were removed, reducing it to a cottage. The house has been owned in recent years by the late Don and Dorothy Engel, and most recently by their daughter, Susan and her husband John McDonald.

In the photo taken last Tuesday, as the house was being demolished, siding which covered the white brick walls has been removed, exposing the ornate concrete pieces at the top of each window and concrete pillars which support the brickwork around the windows. These pieces were gently removed and saved, as was some of the wooden flooring inside the structure.

The huge pine logs were harvested from the lands of the estate, originally planted under the supervision of David Goldie's father, John Goldie, a well respected florist and botanist of his era, who had arrived in Greenfield in 1844.

    SODA SCONES

Into two cups of flour and a pinch of salt rub a piece of butter the size of a walnut, one teaspoonful soda, and one and one-half cream of tartar if the milk is sweet, and if sour use very little cream of tartar. After all is well mixed put in enough milk to make a stiff dough, stiff enough not to require any more flour but just what will keep it from sticking to the board. Bake on a moderately hot griddle. When done set on edge in a dish and roll in a damp cloth.

    ______________

    OAT CAKE

Wet a cupful of fine oatmeal in a small tablespoonful of roast beef dripping (dripping is better than butter for it makes them crisp) and a very little soda with boiling until quite stiff. Roll out quickly til very thin then dust with meal, sweep the meal off again and put on a very hot griddle. Bake on one side only, then rub over with meal again and sweep it off and toast before the fire the side which was not on the griddle. Keep in a dry place and when going to use put in the oven for a few minutes to make them crisp, then set ion the edge to let the steam escape. They are much better done on the griddle than in the oven.
