'A fine, upstanding gentleman in all things'
Former Waterloo North MPP and founder of funeral home, Edward Good dies at 83.

Edward R. Good, the founder of a Waterloo funeral home and a former MPP, died Thursday. He was 83. Good was born and grew up in Kitchener. He attained the rank of second Lieutenant with the Royal Canadian Artillery during the second World War, began the Edward R. Good Funeral Home in 1946 and served as the Liberal MPP for Waterloo North from 1967 to 1977. "I thought the world of Ed Good," said former Ontario Liberal leader Robert Nixon. "He was a very effective spokesman on all provincial issues, and was very well respected by the people in all parties," said Nixon. "He was a pretty solid citizen, and I found him to be an outstanding man to work with And he was always a lot of fun - a very enjoyable man to be with." Good won three elections with relative ease, and was the Liberal critic on municipal affairs for most of his years in the opposition benches. Long-time friend, Jim Breithaupt, a former Kitchener Centre MPP, said Good made a strong, lasting impression on just about everyone he met. "Ed made himself an expert on municipal law. He started fresh and learned on the job, and he did an exceptionally fine job," said Breithaupt. "I was very impressed with his strength of conviction, and the impression he made on people. He was a fine, upstanding gentleman in all things, and a very effective MPP for Waterloo North." Good purchased and renovated the building at 171 King St. S in Waterloo and turned it into a funeral home - a business now run by his son, Paul Good and long-time business partner Jim Erb. "Whenever anybody asks about Ed, the thing that comes to mind first and foremost was his integrity," said Erb. "He was a gentleman through and through, in every aspect of his life, and in the way he greeted people, responded to people and respected people." Until about two years ago, Good retained an active interest in the business, and kept an office at the funeral home, he said. Through the years, Good was also president of the Waterloo Lions Club, president of the Central Ontario Funeral Directors Association, and a member of Branch 530 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Waterloo. Good was predeceased by his wife, Rhea, in 1997. He's survived by three sons, Paul, of Waterloo, David of Victoria, B.C. and John of Toronto, as well as five grandchildren.
