    Shantz.-On the 24th of July, 1906, in Waterloo Twp., Waterloo Co., Ont., suddenly of heart failure, Israel, son of John and Mary Shantz; aged 30 Y., 10 M., 24 D. He was cutting wheat in the evening at about six o'clock when he was seen to sit down by his brother who thought he was resting, but when the brother reached him he was dead. Funeral on the 27th from the parental home to the Berlin Mennonite M. H. Burial in the cemetery adjoining.

    Shantz, Norman S., son of John and Mary (Snyder) Shantz, was born near Kitchener, Ont., Dec. 5, 1876; died at the home of his son near Markham, Ont., Dec. 27, 1967; aged 91 y. 22 d. He was married to Elmina Weber, who died Sept. 12, 1930. Surviving are 4 children (Mahlon, Orval, Seleda-Mrs. Dan Steckle, and Elam), 19 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, one brother (Amsey) and one sister (Mrs. Mary Ann Martin). One daughter (Sylvia), 2 brothers, and 4 sisters preceded him in death. He was a member of the Preston Church, where funeral services were held Dec. 30, with Rufus Jutzi and Emerson McDowell officiating; interment in East End Church Cemetery, Kitchener.

He was married to Mary Ann Detweiler, who died in 1942. Later he was married to Abbie Detweiler. Surviving are 3 sons (Melvin F. , and E. Clare), one daughter (Anna - Mrs. Elton Cressman), 2 brothers (Norman and Amsey), and one sister (Mrs. Mary Ann Martin), and 4 grandchildren. One son died in infancy. He was a member of the First Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held Feb. 4, in charge of Robert Johnson.

    Amsy S. Shantz Amsy S. Shantz of Fairview Mennonite Home in Preston died in the South Waterloo Hospital in Galt Friday after a brief illness. He was 85.

    Born in Kitchener, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John C. Shantz, he had lived in Preston for the past two years. He formerly lived at RR 2, Hespeler, and farmed at RR 3, Kitchener. Mr. Shantz was a member of Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church.

    Surviving besides his wife, the former Luella Kinzie, whom he married in Breslau in 1915, are one son, J. Clifford of Salem; five daughters, Mrs. Amos (Vera) Kipfer of Manilla, N.Y., Nora of Waterloo,. Mrs. David H. (Alice) Bauman of Flora-dale, Mrs. Stanley (Myrtle) Stricker of Kitchener and Mrs. Russell (Mildred) Scheerer of RR 1, Hespeler and 12 grand-children.

    Mr. Shantz was the last surviving member of his family. He was predeceased by four sisters, three brothers and two sons. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home where Rev. Howard Schmitt of Wanner Mennonite Church will conduct the service on Monday at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery.

    Ivan Habermehl, 57, of 480 Ottawa St. S. died Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Waterloo Township, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Habermehl and was a resident of Kitchener for the past 27 years. He was employed for 27 years at Kitchener Dairies Ltd. where he was assistant superintendent. He was a member of Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church and the Independent Order of Foresters. Surviving beside his wife, the former Ruby Heintzman whom he married Nov. 12, 1938, in Kitchener, are two sons, Ronald of Kitchener and Brian, at home; a brother, Ephriam, Hespeler; two sisters, Saloma, Kitchener, and Mrs. Albert (Elvina) Fetter, Toronto, and two grandchildren. One brother, Norman, died in 1941. The body will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until 1 p.m. Friday when removal will be made to Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church for service at 3: 30 p.m., conducted by Rev. James R. Ruesser. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery. Donations to the church's organ fund will be accepted as expressions of sympathy.

    Clare was born on a farm where now are the Eastwood Collegiate and Sunnyside Home. With his parents \endash Titus and Mary Ann (Detweller) Shantz \endash he attended First Mennonite then Stirling Avenue churches and was fully involved in each as Sunday school teacher, song leader, in male quartets, the Literary Society, Young People's Bible meetings, etc. In the early 1940s, Clare attended Ontario Mennonite Bible School.

    Nora was cook there, making meals for an average of 125 \endash 150 students: three meals a day, seven days a week. They were married in July 1945 and in September that year Clare joined Nora as a member of Erb Street. He was chosen by lot and ordained as deacon in 1948, serving until 1980, then was deacon emeritus until his death.In the 1950s Clare fell from a ladder, while working as a carpenter for J C Hallman, and severed his spinal column. After months of adjustment and rehabilitation, he continued as service manager at J C Hallman's until retirement. Some of Clare's many achievements \endash despite being restricted to a wheelchair \endash were getting a ramp built at Erb Street Church, and building trailers designed for his special needs so that he and Nora could travel.Nora's birthplace was on the farm situated on the north west corner of Columbia and Philip Streets in Waterloo. Her parents were Mennonite and Hattie (Lichty) Burkhart and the family attended Erb Street Mennonite Church from about 1922. There was a time at Erb Street when Sunday school pupils could choose their teacher: Nora moved with one class of teenage girls for nine years. The Sunshine Band Committee (later Girls' Club), Junior Charity Circle, the Beacon's WMSA (later WMSC Circle) and librarian were other leadership roles Nora took.In 1958, 1959 and 1960 Nora underwent many operations and treatment for cancer: one operation removed one eye and half of her upper jaw. She was told she would probably not live for another year.

    Anna Mary went to be with her Lord on Monday, August 23, 2021 at the age of 99. She was born June 24, 1922 in Kitchener, daughter of Titus and Maryann (Dettweiler) Shantz.

    Surviving are two sons Maynard and Myron. Predeceased by her husband Elton on December 8, 1968 in a car accident.

    Anna lived with her parents on a farm near Kitchener until 1945, then worked in Kitchener for two years until her marriage in 1947. They moved to Preston for two years, then moved to Alma. Predeceased by brothers and their wives Melvin and Mildred Shantz, Clare and Nora Shantz, in-laws Leander and Marjorie Cressman, Ferman Cressman, Sim and Vera Weaver, Una Cressman, Mary Cressman, Cora Cressman, Pearl Cressman, Leona Cressman, Alfred and Olive High, Clayton and Mabel Shantz, Lloyd and Edith Woolner, Clifford and Gladys Cressman, Harold and Nelda Cressman, Clayton and Pauline Cressman; niece and nephews Charles, Florence and Robert Woolner.

    Visitation will take place on Thursday, August 26, 2021 from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Dreisinger Funeral Home, 62 Arthur St. S., Elmira. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 27, 2021, at the New Covenant Mennonite Fellowship, 7831 Third Line, RR 2, Wallenstein. Interment in Berea Mennonite Cemetery.     BAUMAN, Calvin D. - It is with sadness, the family of Calvin announce his passing on Saturday, November 17, 2007, at Duncan, B.C. Calvin David Bauman, age 57 years. Son of the late David H. and Alice (Shantz) Bauman of Floradale. Father of Erica-Louise Bauman of Kitchener. Brother of Malcolm and Joy Bauman, Doris Bauman all of Chilliwack, B.C., Charlie and Rachel Bauman of Floradale. Also survived by a number of nieces and nephews and many friends. Calvin spent time in England as a firefighter and police officer, returning to Canada, he lived in Moorefield then to B.C. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at the Elmira Pentecostal Assembly, 290 Arthur St. S., Elmira on Saturday, December 8th at 11 a.m. As expressions of sympathy donations to the Mennonite Central Committee would be appreciated by the family as expressions of sympathy.

Beloved wife of Leonard Albert Bechtel, with whom she would have celebrated 68 years of marriage on June 21, 2009. Nora was born 88 years ago in Waterloo Township, a daughter of the late Harvey and Edna (Eby) Brubacher. She had resided in New Hamburg and was formerly of Preston. Nora was an active member of Preston Mennonite Church and Nith Valley Mennonite Church. She was an avid quilter and pieced many quilts for family and friends. Nora enjoyed knitting, gardening and keeping up with her family's interests. Loving mother of David and Muriel Bechtel of Kitchener, Martha and John Wood of London, Norma and John Lichti of New Hamburg, Dorothy and Richard MacBride of Waterloo, Shirley and Darcy Snyder of New Hamburg.     Born in Waterloo township, Ont., in 1922, Ivan went to be with his Lord on November 20. 1995, following a brief illness. He died at his home in Colonia Aqua Azul, Paraguay, where he lived and farmed with his family for 24 years. He is lovingly remembered by his children, Rosalee and her husband James Rohrer, Paula and her husband Philip Riehl, both of Pennsylvania, Candace and her husband Santiago Arevalo of Paraguay, Timothy and his wife Diana, Isaac and his wife Alma, Albert and his wife Naomi, Oscar and his wife Rhoda, all of Ontario. He will also be remembered by 43 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He leaves four sisters, Nora and her husband Leonard Bechtel. Ella Woolner, Verna Staniek and Elaine and her husband Clifford Snider. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Marie in 1994; his parents, Harvey and Edna (Eby) Brubacher; his step-mother. Louise (Reier) Brubacher; an infant daughter, Ruth Edna; a son, John; five grandchildren and two brothers-in-law. Maurice Woolner and Frederick Staniek. Ivan will be missed by his many community friends and his church family at the Aqua Azul Mennonite Church. A funeral service was held there on November 21. Interment took place in the adjoining cemetery.

She will be lovingly remembered by her eight grandchildren, Lora Woolner and her husband Mark Schmidt, Aaron, Sara Fretz and her husband Tim Corlis, Greg Fretz, Ana Fretz and her fiance William Loewen, Joshua, Aislinn, and Angela and great-granddaughters Clara Corlis and Morgen Schmidt. Sister of Nora Bechtel and her husband Leonard of New Hamburg, Verna Staniek of Airdrie, Alberta, and Elaine Snider and her husband Clifford of Cambridge. Sister-in-law to Priscilla Szuck, Doreen Woolner and Elvina Woolner. She was predeceased by her parents, Harvey and Edna (Eby) Brubacher, an infant sister, Clarabelle, brother Ivan and his wife Marie, brothers-in-law Leonard Woolner, Walter Woolner, Royden and his wife Mildred, John Szuck, Fred Staniek, and an infant granddaughter, Lisa Andrea. Ella was a woman of strong faith and optimism and an active member of First Mennonite Church in Kitchener where she remained an active participant of the Women's Sewing Circle. She was also a very active member of the Eastwood Community where she resided. Ella could either be found around the quilting frames quilting, binding another comforter, or at the games table playing one of her favourite games. She was a true friend to many and befriended many with comforting words, food, and care. She will be deeply missed. Friends are invited to share their memories of Ella with her family at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home in Kitchener during visitation on Monday, October 3, 2005 from 7-9 p.m. and on Tuesday, October 4, 2005 from 12: 30-2 p.m. at First Mennonite Church, 800 King St. E. in Kitchener. A Funeral Service to celebrate Ella's life and faith will immediately follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Gary Knarr officiating. After the funeral service and interment, friends and relatives are invited to remain at the church for refreshments and a time to visit with the family.     Verna Staniek

    July 2, 1925 - September 27, 2016

    Verna Staniek of Crossfield, Alberta, beloved wife of the late Alfred Staniek, passed away in Calgary on Tuesday, September 27th, 2016 at the age of 91 years. Verna was born on July 2nd, 1925 in Kitchener, Ontario to Harvey and Edna Brubacher and grew up on the family farm near Kitchener. Verna studied to be a Nurse's Aide, graduating in 1953. Following graduation, Verna and a friend ventured to the Brooks area, where she began working in the Brooks Hospital as an LPN and then later at the Brooks Nursing Home. Verna met Alfred Staniek, while working in Brooks, and they were married in Duchess in 1954. They were happily married for 35 years, until Alfred's passing. Verna enjoyed quilting, gardening and playing the piano and organ. She was predeceased by her loving husband Alfred, daughter Mary Louise Staniek, brother Ivan Brubacher and sisters Nora Bechtel, Ella Woolner and Elaine Snider. Verna is survived by her children, William Staniek of Brooks and Elaine Reed and her husband Peter of Crossfield; grandchildren, Candice Staniek, Crystal Thibault and her husband Duane, Lance Staniek and his wife Shanon, Brenda Pool and her husband Stephen, Kimberly McLean and her husband Stuart; great grandchildren, Brandon, Kayla and Isaac Thibault, Madilyne and Carson McLean, Tate and Dylan Pool and many nieces, nephew and friends. Funeral services were held on Monday, October 3rd at 2:00 PM from Smith Memorial Chapel. Pastor Nathan Ramer officiated. Cremation followed at Smith Funeral Home Ltd. And Crematorium. In memory of Verna, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to either Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, Room 124, Professional Building, 430 \endash 6th Avenue S.E, Medicine Hat, Alberta T1A 2S8 or Kidney Foundation of Canada \endash Alberta Branch, Box 20143, Kensington Post Office, Medicine Hat, Alberta T1A 8M4.

    :SNIDER, Elaine (Brubacher) Passed away suddenly, at Trinity Village Nursing Home, Cambridge Memorial Hospital, on Saturday, October 29, 2011. Elaine was born January 5, 1927 south of Kitchener and was the daughter of the late Harvey and Edna (Eby) Brubacher and the step-daughter of the late Louisa (Reier) Brubacher. Beloved wife of the late Clifford Snider Sr. (2006). Elaine was blessed with a large step family. She is survived by children Clifford (Vivian) Snider Jr., John (Vera) Snider, Mary (Bernie) Shantz, and Barbra (John) Klaver. Also remembered by her sister Verna Staniek of Alberta and all of her dearly loved nieces and nephews. Elaine was blessed with 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grand-children and four great-great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her daughter and son-in-law Grace (David) Tomlinson, daughter-in-law Ethel (Stevanus) Snider and son-in-law Ervin Jewett. Also predeceased by sisters and brothers-in-law Nora (Leonard) Bechtel, Ella (Maurice) Woolner, brother and sister-in-law Ivan (Marie) Brubacher, brother-in-law Fred Staniek, a sister Clarabelle (in infancy) and several nieces and nephews. Elaine attended Rockway Mennonite High School - now Rockway Mennonite Collegiate Institute 1946-1950 and graduated from K-W Hospital School of Nursing in 1953, as a Registered Nurse. She worked two tours of Voluntary Service under the Mennonite Central Committee. From 1955-1958 she worked in Newfoundland as a District Nurse and from 1960-1962 she worked in the health field in Haiti. The remaining years were spent in local hospitals. She retired from Cambridge Memorial Hospital in 1986 to help Clifford with his passion of farming. Elaine was a member of First Mennonite Church from the age of 12 and resided many years in her home in Cambridge and since 1993 she resided at Fairview Mennonite Home. She loved playing Scrabble with her dear friend Dorothy Shantz, attending all the Sunday evening services at the Fairview Auditorium. The lunch bunch trips were enjoyable for Elaine as well was all other special events at Fairview Home. Elaine will be missed by all who knew and loved her. The family wishes to thank all the emergency doctors and nurses at Cambridge Memorial Hospital as well as all of the medical staff on the 5th floor for their care and support during her most recent stay. We especially want to thank Kate at Trinity Village for her compassion. There were also numerous CCAC and paramed workers that attended Elaine over the past few months at Fairview that we want to thank. Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Elaine's family on Monday, October 31, 2011 from 7-9 p.m. and on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 from 7-9 p.m. at the Henry Walser Funeral Home , 507 Frederick St., Kitchener (519-749-8467) and also from 2-4 p.m. on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at the Fairview Mennonite Home Auditorium 515 Langs Drive, Cambridge. The Funeral Service for Elaine will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 at First Mennonite Church, 800 King St. E. Kitchener followed by a reception. Pastor Gary Knarr officiating. Interment St. Agatha Mennonite Cemetery following the reception.     Peacefully, at the Sunnyside Home on Wednesday, December 12, 2018, in his 82nd year. Beloved husband of the late Mary (Rape) Eby. Dear father of Hazel Keating (Bruce) of Shelburne, Lois Sawyer (Mike) of Tottenham, Benjamin Eby of Wallaceburg, Daniel Eby (Lise) of Ottawa, Cindy Jackman of Brantford and Patricia Daniells (Mike) of Waterloo. Sadly missed by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Predeceased by one brother and two sisters. Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Sunnyside Home (Riverside Neighbourhood) for their wonderful care. The family will receive their friends for visitation from 2 - 3 p.m. (Saturday), at the Graham A. Giddy Funeral Homes-Waterloo Chapel, 617 King St. N. Waterloo (across from Home Depot). Memorial Service in the Chapel on Saturday, December 15th at 3: 00 p.m. Reception to follow. Cremation then Interment Wanner Mennonite Cemetery.
