BOWMAN.-On the 22d of December, near Mannheim, Waterloo Co., Ont., Anna Cressman, widow of the late Pre. Moses Bowman. She was born near Freeport, Ont., Aug. 7, 1828, and reached the age of 74 Y., 4 M., 15 D. Buried on the 25th at Mannheim, followed to her last earthly resting place by a host of relatives and friends. She was beloved and respected and we mourn not as those who have no hope.

Noah Cressman, was born in Waterloo twp., in 1837. When he was 3, his father died. Five years later, his mother married Jacob Allbright, Niagara District, and the family moved there. At age 15, he left home, and soon obtained employement as a teacher. Later, he opened a telegraph office and drug establishment in Waterloo, with a branch in Stratford. In July 1862, he married the youngest daughter of Rev. M. Whiting. he died in Waterloo Village, Sept 5, 1864; survived by his wife and an infant.

Cressman.-Cyrus Cressman was born June 13, 1845; died at the home of his son, Isaiah, near Kitchener, Ont., on Feb. 9, 1928; aged 82 y. 7 m. 27 d. On Dec. 24, 1871, he was married to Mary Horst, who predeceased him 19 years. To this union were born 7 sons and 4 daughters, 2 sons, David and Cyrus, having preceded him in death. There remain to mourn his departure 5 sons (Isaiah, of Kitchener; Noah, Levi, and John of Breslau; Allan of Alberta), 4 daughters, (Mrs. Enoch Bauman, Elmira; Mrs. Lloyd Shantz, Maggie of Alberta; Mrs. Jacob Cressman, of Breslau), and one sister, Mrs. Mary Clemens, Breslau. Before his marriage he united with the Mennonite Church in which communion he spent his closing years. He left a testimony of peace with God, and a desire to depart this life and be with Him. Funeral services were held on Feb. 13 at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, with the brethren C.F. Derstine and Oscar Burkholder in charge of the services. Text, II Kings 20: 1. Interment in the adjoining cemetery.

Clemens. - Mary Cressman Clemens was born Feb. 20, 1847; died Jan. 6, 1929; aged 81 y. 10 m. 19 d. In 1866 she was married to Christian Clemens who predeceased her 26 years ago. They had one daughter, Hannah, who died about 4 years ago, since which time Sister Clemens had her home with her nephew, Bro. and Sister Noah Cressman of Breslau. Sister Clemens was stricken with blindness for a number of years and expressed her desire to depart and be with Jesus. Bergey, Louisa, eldest daughter of Pre. Moses S. and Anna Cressman Bowman and beloved wife of deacon David Bergey, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Nov.28, 1845; died at her home near New Dundee,Ont., Jan.11, 1931; aged 85 y. 1. m 14d. On Dec.31, 1872, she was married to David Bergey. This union was blessed with 4 sons and 3 daughters. Two preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, 2 daughters (Amelia and Ida ), 3 sons ( Gilbert, Milton, and Herbert), 10 grandchildren,4 sisters,4 brothers. At the age of 25 she confessed Christ and united with the Mennonite Church of which she was a faithful member to death. She was a regular attendant at church services, seldom missing a service. She was a real help to her husband in his work as deacon in the Church. She enjoyed good health all her life and bore her brief illness with patience; looking forward in happy anticipation for the triumphal entry into the Glory World. Her last desire was to be "where there is fullness of joy and pleasure forever-more." Funeral services were held Jan.14, at the home and at Blenheim Mennonite Church near New Dundee,Ont., by Bros. M.H. Shantz and S.F. Coffman. Text, II Cor.5: 9. Interment in cemetery nearby.

Mrs. Henry Baer Dies in 91st Year

In Good Health Until Ten Days Ago When She Fell and Fractured Her Hip.

Death claimed the third oldest resident of this community in the person of Mrs Henry Baer who passed away at the home of her son, Mr Moses Baer and Mrs. Baer, one and one-half miles west of the village on Friday The late Mrs Baer had been in good health until the preceding Sunday when she fell and fractured her hip. Mrs. Baer whose maiden name was Leah Bowman, was born at Mannheim on May 16, 1847, a daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Moses Bowman. She was married to Mr. Henry Baer in 1868 and they engaged in farming near Zurich and Petersburg for many years. Her husband predeceased her in 1928 and Mrs. Baer has resided with her son Mr Moses Baer for the last number of years The late Mrs. Bauer was a member of the Latschar Mennonite Church at Mannheim. She is survived by nine of her fourteen children four daughters and five sons. namely Mrs. Daniel Eby of Petersburg, Mrs. William Bachert of Kitchener Mrs Ervin Shantz of Freeport, Mrs John Francis of Kitchener, Moses Baer of New Dundee. Ephraim of Haysville Simon of Mannheim, Josiah of Wainwright, Alta, and Norman of Rosebank: fifty-three grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren, two sisters. Mrs. Susannah Shantz of Kitchener and Mrs. John Berry of Langley Prairie, B.C.; and three brothers Aaron Bowman of Mannheim, Noah of Guernsey, Sask, and Ezra of Lynn Mo

The funeral in charge of Bishop M. Hallman of Mannheim was held at the Latschar Mennonite Church on Monday afternoon following a brief service at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Moses Baer. Interment was made in the adjoining remetery.

Shantz. - Anna Bowman, beloved wife of W. E. Shantz, Berlin, Ont., died Aug. 15, 1916; aged 65 y. 6 m. 19 d. She was the third eldest daughter of the late Pre. Moses Bowman of Manheim. She leaves to mourn their loss a loving husband, 4 daughters, and 3 sons, besides relatives and friends.The funeral services were held Aug. 22 at the Berlin Mennonite Church, conducted by Bros. U. K. Weber and S. F. Coffman, Psa. 23 was read and the text chosen was II Cor. 5: 1: " For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."Sister Shantz was a faithful Christian and member of the Mennonite Church since her youth. She also had the pleasure of seeing all her family brought into the fold of Christ. Her presence in the community and at services will be greatly missed for she was of a kind and loving disposition always ready and anxious to help those in need; and the hungry stranger who came to her door was fed and sheltered. " As ye have done it unto one of the least of these, ye did it unto me." She suffered from a complication of diseases for about 18 months, being cared for by her daughters, who deemed it a great privilege to minister to her every need. Her sufferings at times were very intense, but she never murmured or complained, bearing all with Christian fortitude and patience. The end came unexpectedly as a result of heart failure, but she always testified that she was ready to meet her Savior and the family need not mourn as those having no hope, for " Though she be dead, yet she liveth."

Bowman - The sunset hours of Friday, April 28, saw the passing of Bro. Moses C. Bowman of Kitchener, one of the older and respected citizens of the community. On Thursday he suffered a slight stroke, was unconscious for three hours, but rallied to such a remarkable extent that his recovery seemed probable, when suddenly, after conversing with friends, with no premonition, his spirit slipped away.Bro. Bowman was born on Jan. 1, 1855, at Mannheim, Ont. He was the son of Pre. Moses S. Bowman. He was married the first time to Lydia Shantz, Feb. 5, 1878, who predeceased him in 1899. He was later married to Susanna E. Shantz, Oct. 25, 1900.He is survived by his wife, and 5 children, from his first wife (Alvah S. and Edwin S. of Guernsey, Sask.; Henry S. of Waterloo, Malinda S. of Kitchener, and Moses S. of Mannheim), 16 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Henry Baer, Mannheim, Mrs. David Shuh and Mrs. Menno Shantz, both of Kitchener; Aaron of Mannheim; Noah of Guernsey, Sask.; Mrs. John Berry, Langley, British Columbia; and Ezra of Freedom, Mo.Bro. Bowman was a widely and well known, both as a man and a minister of the Gospel for 44 years. As such he was a consistent Christian, a staunch churchman, and a vigorous minister, whose services were widely used. Besides being one of the pastors of the Mannheim Mennonite Church, he served outlying places such as Zurich, South Cayuga, Sherkston, Bothwell, and Rainham, in his earlier days, he also labored among the local churches. His counsel in Conference work was valuable in many directions, and often sought after by other workers. He was a versatile and apt conversationalist, ready with wisdom and wholesome philosophy, which unraveled many difficult problems. He was a lover of good men, well informed, an interested citizen, a pleasant neighbor, who radiated a good deal of cheer by his remarkable fund of illustrations gathered during his long life, and kept ready by a well trained memory.He was one of the men who kept his faith strong by a constant devotion to the living God. Many men allow the experiences of life and much constant distress to crush them. Bro. Bowman seemed to have learned the art of making such stepping stones to a higher life and greater conquest.The funeral was held Wednesday at the home and at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, and interment at the Latschar Mennonite Cemetery at Mannheim. The services were in charge of Bro. C.F. Derstine, assisted by the other bishops in Ontario, M. Hallman, Jonas Snyder, Moses Brubaker, and S.F. Coffman. Texts, Acts. 13: 36. "(New Dundee) Stricken with a heart attack, Aaron C. Bowman, 79, a lifelong resident of the Mannheim district, died suddenly Monday at his home. Born July 23, 1861, he was son the late Mr. and Mrs. Moses Bowman and had lived his entire life on the farm where he died. He celebrated his golden wedding anniversary several years ago. Mr. Bowman was an active member of Latschar Mennonite church.

Surviving are his wife, Sarah Bricker, a son Walter of Twenty Nine Palms, Calif., four daughters, Mrs. George Milne of Mannheim, Miss Sylvia of Detroit, Mrs. Leslie Musselman of Preston and Mrs. Eldon Musselman of Detroit, a brother Ezra of Linn, Mo., two sisters, Mrs. Susannah Shantz of Kitchener and Mrs. John Berry of Longly Prairie, B.C., and 9 grandchildren....Latschar Mennonite Cemetery...."

Cressman, -- Noah H., Breslau, Ont., eldest son of Cyrus and Mary (Horst) Cressman, was born Jan. 24, 1873, and departed this life July 20, 1953; aged 80 y. 5 m. 25 d. On Oct. 23, 1900, he was united in marriage to Catherine Brubacher who predeceased him on June 23, 1945. He was born at Natchez, near Kitchener, Ont., where he resided until after his marriage, then farmed near Breslau, Ont., from 1908 to 1920, when he and the family moved to the village of Breslau. Here he operated a flour mill and served as postmaster. He accepted Christ in his youth during the early days of evangelistic fervor in Ontario, and was a member of the Cressman Mennonite Church, Breslau, Ont. Bro. Cressman was well and active until a few days before his death which took place at the home of his daughter Ruby, New Hamburg, Ont., where he had resided for the last 5 months. Surviving are 3 sons (Aylmer, Toronto, Ont.; Eben, Preston, Ont.; and Cecil, Kitchener, Ont.), 2 daughters (Ella, Kitchener, Ont.; and Ruby;Mrs. Oliver Shantz, New Hamburg, Ont.), one brother (Allan, Guernsey, Sask.), one sister (Maryann;Mrs. Lloyd Shantz, Didsbury, Alta.), and 7 grandchildren. He was predeceased by two infant sons and by a son (Mervin), who died in 1933, also by 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Funeral services were conducted at the Cressman Mennonite Church by Oscar Burkholder, assisted by Carl Rudy. Interment took place in the First Mennonite Cemetery, Kitchener, Ont.

Levi, son of the late Cyrus and Mary (Horst) Cressman, was born in Waterloo Twp., Ont., June 15, 1874; died at the Braeside Home, Preston, Ont., April 26, 1947; aged 72 y. 10 m. 11 d. On Jan. 12, 1910 he was united in marriage to Elmina Woolner, who survives. Also surviving are one son (Earl, Champion, Alta.), 5 daughters (Luanna-Mrs. Henry Wismer, Galt, Ont.; Naomi, Waterloo, Ont.; Erma, Kitchener, Ont.; Aleda-Mrs. Kenneth Cassel, of Preston; Ruth-Mrs. David Currie, of Galt), 9 grandchildren, 2 brothers (Noah, Breslau, Ont.; Allen, Guernsey, Sask.), and 2 sisters (Mrs. Enoch Bowman, of Waterloo; and Mrs. Lloyd Shantz, Didsbury, Alta.). Two brothers and two sisters predeceased him. He was a member of the Cressman Mennonite Church, Breslau. Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, April 29, in charge of C. F. Derstine and Oscar Burkholder.

Isiah son of the late Cyrus B. amd Mary (Horst) Cressman, died at his home near Kitchener, Dec. 19, 1942; aged 66 y. 8 m. 17 d. He was born on the "Cressman homestead" on which farm he resided practically his entire lifetime. March 14, 1900, he was united in marriage to Magdalena Shirk. He is survived by his wife, 7 daughters (Vera of Kitchener, Una a missionary in the Argentine Republic of South America, Cora of Kitchener, Leona at home, Mrs. Alfred High of Vineland, Mabel and Edith of Kitchener), and 6 sons (Leander of Pierre Point, N. Y.; Ferman at home; Clifford of Vancouver Island; Harold of New Hamburg; Elton of Kitchener; and Clayton at home). Two sisters and 3 brothers also survive (Mrs. Enoch Bauman of Drayton; Mrs. Lloyd Shantz of Carstairs, Alta.; Noah of Breslau; Levi of Preston; and Allan of Guernsey, Sask.). He was predeceased by 2 daughters (Mary and Pearl), also 2 sisters and 1 brother (Magdalena in December, 1939, Mrs. Jacob Cressman in November, 1937, and John Cressman in April, 1941). Bro. Cressman united with the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Jan. 1, 1900. For many years he served in the capacity of the local director of Mennonite Fire Aid Association and rendered good service. Services and burial were conducted at First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, in charge of Bro. C. F. Derstine. Bros. Merle Shantz and S. F. Coffman assisted in the services. Cressman. - Magdalena Cressman passed away at the Kitchener and Waterloo Hospital, on Sunday evening, Dec. 10, 1939, after a brief illness; aged 61 y. 10 m. 14 d. She was a daughter of the late Cyrus Cressman and Mary Horst, born at Nachez Jan. 26 1878, and was well known in her home community as a practical nurse. She united with the First Mennonite Church in her youth and remained a faithful member of the Church until her death. She is survived by 2 sisters (Mrs. Enoch Bauman of Winfield and Mrs. Lloyd Shantz of Carstairs, Alta.), also 5 brothers (Noah, Levi, and John Cressman of Breslau, Isaiah of Kitchener, and Allen of Guernsey, Sask.). One sister (Mrs. Jacob Cressman of Breslau) predeceased her Nov. 7, 1937. Funeral services were held in First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont., in charge of R. K. Weber and J. B. Martin. Bauman. -- Susannah Bauman was born in Waterloo Twp., Ont., Oct. 4, 1879; died at the K. W. Hospital, Kitchener, Ont., Dec. 7, 1948; aged 69 y. 2 m. 3 d. Death resulted suddenly from a heart attack following a stroke. On March 17, 1907, she was united in marriage to Enoch M. Bauman, who survives. Also surviving are 5 children (Irene, Hamilton, Ont.; Viola - Mrs. Edwin Bowman, Yatton, Ont.; Melvin, Heidelberg, Ont.; Alson, Kitchener, Ont.; Salome - Mrs. Elmer Brubacher, Wallenstein, Ont.), 9 grandchildren, 2 brothers (Noah Cressman, Breslau, Ont.; and Allen Cressman, Guernsey, Sask.), and one sister (Maryann - Mrs. Lloyd Shantz, Didsbury, Alta.). An infant son (Enoch) predeceased her in 1916 and a twenty-year-old daughter (Salinda) in 1935. In her youth she joined the Mennonite Church, of which she was a member at the time of her death. She was a faithful wife and a kind mother. Funeral services were held Dec. 9 in the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery. Reuben Dettweiler and Oscar Burkholder officiated. Text: Ruth 1: 16,17.

CRESSMAN - John Cressman was born in Waterloo Twp., Ont., on Sept. 12, 1881, and died at his late home near Breslau, Ont., on April 28, 1941; aged 59 y. 7 mo. 16 d. On June 10, 1908. He was married to Elmeda Becker who, with 1 son, Ray, and 1 daughter, Mrs. Geo. Clayton, 4 brothers, Noah and Levi of Breslau, Isaiah of Kitchener, Allen of Guernsey, Sask., 2 sisters Mrs. Enoch Bauman of Wallenstien (sic) and Mrs. Lloyd Shantz of Didsbury, Alta., and 1 grandchild, survives him. Two sisters, Magdalena of Kitchener, and Mrs. Jacob Cressman of Breslau, predeceased him a few years ago. Bro. Cressman united with the Mennonite Church, and the Cressman congregation at Breslau during Bro. S. G. Shetler's meetings in Feb. 1908. Shantz.- Mary Ann, was born at Kitchener, Ont., Apr. 17, 1887; died at the Didsbury (Alta.) Hospital, Oct 8, 1969; aged 82 y. 5 m. 20 d. On Dec 20, 1917, she was married to Lloyd Shantz, who survives Also surviving are one son (Royden), one daughter (Gladys-Mrs. Joe Diller), one brother (Allan Cressman), and 7 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one grandson, 6 brothers, and 3 sisters. Funeral services were held at the West Zion Church, with Gordon Buschert and Stanley Shantz officiating.

There remain to mourn her early departure, her loving husband, 3 daughters (Verda, wife of Gordon Lichty, Eral and Florence), 3 sons (Willard, Leonard, and Donald), besides a large relationship and many friends. Sister Cressman was converted in her 19th year and united with the Mennonite Church in which communion she remained a faithful loyal member until she was called home. Weber, Cyrus C., son of Mr. and Mrs. Abraham Weber, was born April 5, 1869; died after a long illness, April 23, 1961, at Kitchener, Ont.; aged 92 y. 18 d. His first wife Susannah, died in 1897. On March 20, 1900, he was married to Maria Shantz, who survives. Also surviving are 2 sons (Clarence and Lloyd), 5 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. He was a member of the First Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held April 25, in charge of C. F. Derstine and Edgar Metzler.

Nahrgang.-Amelia Bergey, beloved wife of Menno Nahrgang, passed away at her home near New Hamburg, Ont., on Sunday morning, April 19, 1936, after an illness of only a few months. Death was due to a heart attack. She was born in Wilmot Tp., Sept. 20, 1873, the daughter of the late David and Louisa (Bowman) Bergey. At the age of 18 she accepted Christ as her Savior and united with the Mennonite Church, of which she remained an active and faithful member to the end. As a young woman Sister Nahrgang followed the teaching profession for a period of ten years. She was a former student of Elkhart Institute and Goshen College. In 1909 she was married to Menno Nahrgang, and since her marriage has resided on the farm near New Hamburg. In the Sunday school she served as a teacher for many years. With the beginning of the women's missionary organization in Ontario she was appointed president, which office she held until her death, besides being the president of the local organization during that entire period. Surviving are her husband, 1 daughter (Alice), and 2 adopted sons (Fred and Philip Richardson) ; also 1 sister (Mrs. Fred B. Miller of Kitchener) and 3 brothers (Gilbert of New Dundee, Milton of Toronto, and Herbert of New Hamburg). A sister (Eva) and a brother (Ezra) predeceased her. In her passing, her home will miss her as a kind and loving mother and companion, the church has lost one who sought to carry forward her program at the cost of sacrifice, and in the community she will be missed as one who was always ready to lend a helping hand. Funeral services were held April 22 from her late home, followed by public services at the Biehn Church and burial in the adjoining cemetery. Services conducted by the brethren, M. Hallman, S. F. Coffman, and C. C. Cressman.

Bergey. - Eva, daughter of David and Louisa Bergey, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Sept. 12, 1875. Failing somewhat in health for a few years, she finally succumbed to an attack of septicaemia and heart failure, on June 12, 1914. Sister Eva was patient in her suffering and resigned to the will of God. She was always active and earnest in her work and desirous of doing all the good she could for others. [Note: begin p. 208] her place in the home, in the community, and Church will be greatly missed. She was converted to God in 1892, and has since that time been an interested and active worker in the Church. The large concourse of relatives and friends who met at the funeral services on the 15th bears witness to the esteem in which she was held and to the sympathy extended to the family in their bereavement. Bergey, Gilbert (1877-1950)

"Gilbert Bergey, church leader and dairy farmer; b.13 September, 1877 in Waterloo County, Ontario to David and Louisa (Bowman) Bergey . He was the eldest son in a family of four sons and three daughters. On 8 October 1902 he married Angeline (Angie) Martin (19 November 1877-27 February 1942) in Elmira. They were members of the Blenheim Mennonite Church near New Dundee and took up residence on the Bergey dairy farm. They had one son, David. Gilbert Bergey died 16 January 1950 and was buried at the Blenheim Mennonite Church.

Both Gilbert and Angie taught Sunday School classes. As a young man, Gilbert taught the Young Ladies' Class; his next assignment was the Mothers' Class. Angie found her niche in teaching the Beginners' Class. Gilbert led congregational singing using a "tuning fork" to get the pitch; he was never known to falter when the music was written in "shaped notes".

In 1921, Gilbert's father, David Bergey, the aged deacon at Blenheim asked to step back from active service. When the voice of the congregation was sought and the lot was cast, it fell on Gilbert who succeeded his father as deacon on 17 July 1921 . He also followed his father as secretary of the Mennonite Conference of Ontario from 1922-1940. He also served on the conference Welfare Board organized to assist indigent widows and orphans and to counsel persons in financial difficulty within the Ontario conference constituency.
In his vocation as a dairy farmer, Gilbert processed most of his milk supply into cheese which he sold at a nearby Farmers Market. He also sent a small quantity of milk to the local New Dundee Co-Operative Creamery. This led to a call on his counseling skills by non-Mennonite neighbors. In the mid 1930s a sharp controversy arose between the co-operative's directors and its patrons. Due to Gilbert Bergey's reputation in as a skillful mediator, he was elected as a director. It was a demanding request to which he responded with hesitation but served with integrity.

Gilbert Bergey has a quiet and cheerful nature. He was sought by many for his wise counsel; he was a stable voice in the Ontario Mennonite community in the decades prior to World War II."

Ezra had been teaching school at New Dundee until Apr. 1, when he had to resign on account of failing health. He went to a health resort in Muskoka, Ont., and seemed to make rapid improvement, but while there contracted a cold and left for home. Pneumonia set in and he died very unexpectedly. He was a faithful member of the Mennonite Church for nearly three years, took an active part in church work and was superintendent of the Blenheim Sunday school. By a Cousin.

MILLAR, Mrs. Frederick B. (Ida Bergey) -- At Cambridge Country Manor, Route 31, Cambridge (P), on Saturday, April 29, 1978, Ida Bergey, formerly of 54 Marshall St., waterloo, age 92 years. Mrs. Millar was born in New Dundee, a daughter of the late David Bergey and the former Louisa Bowman. A member of Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church; a member and past president of the Women's Missionary Association of the church. A charter member and past presiden tof New Dundee Women's Institute and a member of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick B. Millar, in 1955 and by four brothers and two sisters. Surviving ar five sons, Douglas and Donald of Kitchener, Rev. Robert Millar of Oklahoma and twins, Roderick of Cambridge (G) and Frederick of Kitchener and two daughters, Louisa Miller and Bertha (Mrs. Robert Landers), both of Waterloo; 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren also survive. A private family committal service was held at Woodland cemetery today. The family will be receiving friends and relatives at Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church chapel on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with Rev. Martha Smith and Rev. Ron Rempel officiating. Donations to the memorial find of the WMA, the Mennonite Central Committee or the CNIB may be made as expressions of sympathy, and may be made at the church or the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home.

"Ida was the sixth of David and Louisa (Bowman) Bergey's seven children. She was born the year her family moved to New Dundee. At the age of 22 Ida became a charter member of the New Dundee Women's Institute and was elected their first president in 1907. Her involvement in the Institute provided a stepping stone to develop her creative writing. In later years she became a correspondent for the Kitchener-Waterloo Record.

After her marriage to Fred Millar they purchased a little 13 acre farm two miles west of Kitchener. Fred worked in Kitchener during the 1920s but was unemployed during the depression in the 1930s. The income from the farm was not sufficient to support their growing family of seven children. Twin sons born in 1931 completed the family circle. One of thet wins at the age of two required surgery and was hospitalized for a year in the Toronto Sick Children's Hospital. (This was before the Ontario Hospital Insurance Plan was in effect.)

At this point Ida recalled the cheese making skills she learned from her mother. A small vat, a cheese press and a few utensils were brought fromt he Bergey home farm near New Dundee. Ida made the traditional Bowman Farmes Mild Cheese. Medium and Old Cheddar was purchased from various cheese factories and sold at several markets. Their first market stand was at the Kitchener Farmers' Market where her brother Herb and her UncleAaron Bowman's family also sold cheese.

In 1936 and 1937 the family sold cheese at four markets each Saturday. Fred dropped off Ida and son Donald at Kitchener, then with Douglas proceeded on to Preston. That market was over by 9 a.m., then on to Hamilton, another 35 miles east. At noon Ida and Donald left the Kitchener market for the Waterloo market with a farmer who also attended both markets.

Kitchener/Waterloo are Twin Cities. The distance between the two markets was a little over three miles. The Waterloo Market did not open for business until exactly 1 p.m. when the Market Clerk would ring a bell. Those who had already made a selection (and sometimes paid for it) wouldr ush to pick up their merchandise and leave.
The market was over in a couple of hours so Ida had to wait until sometime between four and five o'clock when Fred would arrive from Hamilton to take the family and empty cheese boxes home.

They made a specialty of aging their cheddar to a degree of ripeness that was popular with many who appreciated the sharp tang. Some cheddars were much superior to others, depending on the month it was made, the factory that produced it, humidity, temperature and other factors. Visits were made to the five or six factories that produced cheddar and testing made from a tubular sample drawn from the 80-90 lb. block was standard practice.

One amusing incident remains in memory. A little cheese factory located in the Fryfogel Inn between New Hamburg and Stratford had a supply of quarter-pound bars of Limburger cheese considerably past their prime. Limburger has a relatively short life and unless refrigerated it will ripen to a soft, runny mass, almost like honey, but it certainly does not smell sweet. The manager offered them for five cents each. Could they be sold? 'Well, take them anyway and if you sell them you can pay me, if not, throw them out.'

They were offered at 15 cents each and only one or two were sold. The next week a sign announced 'Specially aged limburger - 35 cents'. We sold them all that Saturday and for weeks people would return and ask for that' good'? old limburger." (compiled by D. Douglas Millar)

:"Ida Bergey, at the age of nineteen or twenty, probably had thedistinction of being the youngest president of any Women's Institute in Ontario. Hers was a life-long involvement in community and church activities. In her eighties, she was still visiting 'senior's.

YOUTH AND ADVENTURE

Ida Bergey was born on June 16, 1885 to David and Louisa (Bowman) Bergey. The Bergey family attended the Blenheim Mennonite Church, where David was ordained deacon in 1889.

Although Ida's father was a teacher in the public schools, an education beyond grade school was not considered necessary for girls. Ida's older sister Amelia, whose story is also told in this book, worked her own way through higher education when she was old enough to leave home. Ida's educational pursuits seem to be limited to a term in the Bible Studyclass (forerunner of Ontario Mennonite Bible School) of 1907 and a course at a business college.

Ida, however, did not lack for educational stimulation in the home. Her father's library contained most of the classics of the time. The room which contained this library was Ida's favourite.

When the New Dundee Women's Institute was organized in the early 1900s, Ida joined, and it was not long until her name was proposed for the office of president. When she asked her father what she should do, he advised, 'You have to make up your own mind. But if you can't take criticism, don't accept.'

Frequently one hears stories of young men going west for a bit of adventure, but in the Bergey family it was the women. Ida, her sister, Eva, and a family friend decided to go to California. The three of them found employment in a millionnaire's home. One of them was cook, one was the upstairs maid, the other the downstairs maid. These women learned a great deal about refined housekeeping during that year, and Ida continued to set an attractive table whenever she entertained.

On her return from California, Ida went to Toronto to find work. While there, she became acquainted with Frederick Millar. Since Ida was under church discipline for failing to abide by the prescribed dress regulations and Fred was not a member of the Mennonite Church, they were married at a Baptist church in 1917. They eventually bought a little farm just west of Kitchener.

CHURCH AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

When Stirling Avenue Mennonite church was organized in 1924, the Millars still had no church affiliation. This congregation was open to receiving members, disciplined in their own congregations for breach of the dress code. In spite of, or perhaps because of, his being drafted into the army, the Mennonite stand on peace and non-violence appealed to Fred, and the Millars joined the Stirling Church.

Ida soon became involved in the Women's Missionary Society. In 1930 after the death of Mary Snider, Ida was appointed as Cradle Roll superintendent. (The Cradle Roll was sponsored by the WMS). In 1941 she was elected secretary of the Society, in 1944 as vice-pres., and in 1946 as president. According to the minutes she frequently volunteered to pack relief goods or mend at the Mennonite Central Committee depot. One fall, in lieu of making so many quilts, Ida organized a comforter-knotting bee for the young people. The youth knotted a lot of comforters, but the women spent another day redoing much of the work!

The church camping program also received Ida's support. Her family does not know how she had the time and energy to volunteer to cook and serve as 'camp mother', but she was there.

Probably in order to get away from the constant emphasis on quilting in the regular women's meetings, Ida and one of her Sunday school classes began the 'Friendly Circle'. This group was more socially oriented and not as highly organized as the WMS, kept no records, but did take on some projects and always had devotions at the meetings.

Living on the highway and relatively close to the road made the Millar house very accessible to the transients who walked from city to city. Especially during the Depression, men would walk the roads in search of employment, and failing to find that, had to seek a free meal and lodging, wherever they could. The Millars never turned anyone away - well, only once! One day Ida was especially busy and actually turned one away. As soon as he was on his way, she was filled with remorse. She went to the telephone and called her neighbour up the road, who promised to take care of the problem. She made a sandwich and met the man at the end of her lane.

On another occasion, a very discouraged man spent a few days at the Millar home. Unknown to them, he was contemplating suicide. After receiving the Millar family's hospitality - and even a little counsel, he went back to Chicago with renewed hope. He later wrote to them, telling them they had saved his life.

It was also during the depression years that the Millar family hosted children from the orphanage during the summer months. Ida would have liked to adopt one particular little girl, but her church friends counselled against it. They reasoned that by the time the girl would be a teenager, Ida would be an old woman. Her friends probably had the welfare of the child in mind and, no doubt, also felt that Ida, with her family of seven, had enough children of her own.

Although Ida was not much interested in quilting, she did learn to sew and kept her family well-clothed. The family recalls that a neighbour came one day with some worn out pants and asked Ida for patches. Seeing the state of the pants, Ida gave her a pair which one of her sons had outgrown. The next Sunday at church, Lena Weber came to Ida and said she had found some good pant material on sale. She had thought of Ida and all her boys; so she bought some material and made each of them a pair of pants. Ida came home beaming, 'If you give away your old pants, the Lord will give you a set of new ones!'

One cold Sunday morning in winter, the whole Millar family was sick, and everyone stayed in bed. Before long the neighbour from across the road and up the hill was knocking at the door. Fred went to answer in his night shirt. The man wondered what was wrong, and Fred wondered how he knew something was wrong. 'Well', said the caller. 'If at this hour on a Sunday morning there is no smoke coming from your chimney, there is something wrong'. He built a fire in the stove and went for his wife, who came and made a kettle full of hot soup. The outcome of that incident was that a friendship developed, and this couple - first the wife, then the husband - became members of the Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church.

When Ida joined the Women's Institute in her youth, it provided a stepping stone to develop her creative writing. As a correspondent for the Kitchener-Waterloo Record, she received a free subscription. This was particularly significant since it coincided with the depression years. She wrote a column of local news, calling herself the 'Elmdale Correspondent'. She wrote her reports by lamp light after the children were in bed. That was also the time she did most of her reading.

Ida exercised her literary skills throughout her life - writing pieces and poetry for the Women's Institute or for various family and church celebrations. One of her last poems accompanied the plates she distributed to her daughters and daughter-in-law one Christmas. She died on April 29, 1978 after a long, active life, passing on a legacy of faith, conviction, optimism and strength as well as plates."

Born July 9, 1887 at New Dundee, he was a s/o the late Mr./Mrs. David Bergey and had farmed in the New Hamburg district since 1921. He retired 10 years ago. He was a member of Zion Evangelical United Brethren Church, the church choir and the board of trustees. He had been a Sunday school teacher and was the church representative on the cemetery board. He was also a board member of the Wilmot Municipal Telephone System.

Mrs. Daniel Eby - By Record Correspondent - New Dundee, April 20

Mrs. Daniel Eby passed away at her home, RR 2, Petersburg, yesterday, after a lingering illness. She was in her 73rd year. Mrs. Eby was born in Waterloo Township on July 7th, 1869, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Baer. After her marriage to Mr. Eby, they took up residence in Wilmot Township where she lived until the time of her death. She was a member of the Latschar Mennonite Church. Her husband, two sons, Edwin on the home farm, Gordon of Breslau, and daughter Ellen at home; three sisters, Elvina, (Mrs. William Bachert) of Kitchener, Louisa (Mrs. Irvin Shantz) of Preston, Eva (Mrs. John Francis of Kitchener; five brothers Moses of New Dundee, Ephraim of New Hamburg, Simon of Petersburg, Josiah of Wainwright, Alberta, Norman of Petersburg also survive. The funeral will take place on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock from the family residence to the Latschar Mennonite Church with interment in the adjoining cemetery. Bishop M. Hallman and Rev. Lorne Schmidt will be in charge of the service.

Mrs. Daniel Eby

Mrs. Daniel Eby passed away at her home, Bleam's Road, east of Wilmot Centre, on Sunday after a lingering illness. She was in her 73rd year.

Mrs. Eby was born in Waterloo township on July 7th, 1869, the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hy. Baer. After her marriage to Mr. Eby, they took up residence in Wilmot Township, where she lived until the time of her death. She was a member of the Latschar Mennonite Church.

Her husband, two sons, Edwin, on the home farm, Gordon, of Breslau, and daughter, Ellen, at home, three sisters, Elvina, (Mrs. Wm. Bachert), Kitchener, Louisa, (Mrs. Irvin Shantz), Preston, Eva, (Mrs. John Francis), Kitchener, five brothers, Moses, New Dundee, Ephraim, New Hamburg, Simon, Petersburg, Josiah, Wainwright, Alta., and Norman, of Petersburg, survive.

The funeral took place Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock from the family residence to the Latschar Mennonite Church with interment in the adjoining cemetery. Bishop M. Hallman and Rev. Lorne Schmidt were in charge of the services.

Bachert, Elvina, daughter of the late Henry and Leah (Bowman) Baer, was born in Waterloo Twp., Ont., on March 12, 1871; passed away at the Kitchener and Waterloo Hospital on Jan. 6, 1952; aged 80 y. 9 m. 24 d.
In February, 1897, she was united in marriage to William Bachert.
Mrs. Bachert was a faithful member of the First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont. She is survived by her husband, 2 sons (Clayton, Grand Rapids, Mich., and Wilfred, Chicago, Ill.), 2 daughters (Eva-Mrs. Elmer Shantz, Kitchener, Ont.; and Alice, Colombia, South America), 5 brothers (Moses, New Dundee, Ont., Ephraim, Haysville, Ont.; Simon and Josiah, Kitchener, Ont.; and Norman, Baden, Ont.), 2 sisters (Mrs. Irvin Shantz, Freeport, Ont., and Mrs. Jack Frances, Kitchener, Ont.), 14 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
One son (Ivan) died in 1946.
Funeral services were held at the Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church in charge of J. H. Hess with Wilfred Ulrich and U. K. Weber assisting. Burial was made at First Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Baer, Ephraim, son of the late Henry and Leah (Bowman) Baer, was born in Zurich, Ont., Jan. 24, 1877; passed away suddenly at his home Dec. 8, 1953; aged 76 y. 11 m. 15 d. In 1904 he married Lovina Nahrgang, who survives. Also surviving are 7 sons and 7 daughters (Oscar and Mervin, of New Dundee; Sylvester, of Manitoba; Moses, Jeremiah and Martin, of Bright; Allan, of North Dakota; Zelma, of Elmira; Leah and Mary, at home; Vinetta, of India; Barbara-Mrs. Gordon Bindernagle, of Kitchener; Martha, of Toronto; and Viola-Mrs. Roderick McKenzie, of Galt). From his youth he was a faithful member of the Biehn Mennonite Church. We praise God for calling him home without suffering, for he fell asleep to awaken with Jesus. Baer.- Simon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Baer, was born near Zurich, Ont., Dec. 22, 1878; died at the South Waterloo Hospital, Galt, Ont., after a brief illness, June 15, 1969; aged 90 y. 5 m. 23 d. He was married to Luanna Shantz, who died in 1953. His second wife, Lydia Shantz, survives. Also surviving are 3 sons (Arthur, Raymond, and Manasseh), 4 daughters (Verna-Mrs. Omar Rudy, Grace-Mrs. Mervin Weber, Lillian-Mrs. Ronald Snider, and Florence-Mrs. Vernice Smith), 18 grandchildren, 35 greatgrandchildren, one brother (Norman), and one sister (Eva-Mrs. John Francis). He was preceded in death by one daughter (Edith, in 1943) and 2 infant sons. He was a member of the First Mennonite Church, where funeral services were held June 18, with Robert Johnson and Rufus Jutzi officiating^.

SAD ACCIDENT

On Good Friday, the 31st of March, several of the sons of Bro. Henry Baer near Manheim, Waterloo Co., Ontario, were engaged in boiling maple sap in the woods, the rest of the family having gone to meeting. While the oldest of them went home for a short time on some business, his brother Noah, about eight and a half years old, accidently fell into the pan of boiling sap, and was scalded so badly that he died at about 10 o'clock the same evening. Buried at Latschar's cemetery on Monday April 3d, where a large number of people were assembled to sympathize with the sorrowing family in their sad bereavement. Bro. Menno Cressman spoke in German from Matt. 22: 12 and Bro. N. Stauffer in English from Mark 10: 14, 15, 17.

Francis.- Eva, daughter of Henry and Leah (Bowman) Baer, was born in Mannheim, Ont., May 15, 1886; died at K-W Hospital, Kitchener, Ont., Aug. 23, 1984; aged 98 y. She was married to John Francis, who survives. Also surviving are 2 daughters (Violet-Mrs. Cecil Cressman and Grace-Mrs. Carl Cressman), 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. Baer.-Ezra, youngest son of Deacon Henry and Leah Baer, was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Nov. 30, 1890; died at the Kitchener-Waterloo hospital) following an operation for appendicitis on Jan. 2, 1936; aged 45 y. 1 m 3 d. His illness was only of a few days' duration and therefore his death came as a distinct shock. At the age of 12 he confessed Christ as his personal Savior and united with the Mennonite Church. His testimony a few days before his death was, "I am ready to go." On Sept. 9, 1919, he was united in marriage with Elizabeth Good of New Hamburg, Ont. This union was blest with 5 sons and 1 daughter. He leaves his wife, 5 sons, 1 daughter, his aged mother, 5 brothers and 4 sisters. Funeral services were held Jan. 5, by M. H. Shantz at the home and M. Hallman and J. W. Witmer at the Latschar Mennonite church. Text, II Cor. 4: 17, 15. A large concourse of people had gathered to pay the last tribute of respect. Isaiah Bowman was born in Waterloo County of Pennsylvania German parents, who moved to Michigan when he was a small child.

His great scholastic achievements won for him distinction in many fields and he became known as one of the world's foremost geographers. A graduate of Harvard and Yale Universities, he became a professor at Yale. He led expeditions to South America in 1907 and 1913 and served as geographer and geologist on a Peruvian expedition in 1911.

He was President of Johns Hopkins University from 1935 to 1948.

Dr. Bowman accompanied the American delegation to the Peace Conference following World War I and was adviser to Presidents Wilson and Roosevelt. He also took part in the World Security Conference in Dunbarton Oaks in 1944.

In honour of his memory and in recognition of his many accomplishments, the University of Waterloo named its Social Science Building, "The Isaiah Bowman Building

University of Waterloo quietly removes plaque, portrait of anti-Semite
American scholar calls on UW to publicly explain why it was wrong to name a building after 'lifelong eugenicist, anti-Semite, and racist'

WATERLOO REGION - The University of Waterloo has quietly removed a portrait and plaque from a campus building dedicated to a noted scholar and administrator who was also a notorious anti-Semite.

When it was built in the late 1960s, the Environment 1 building \emdash known as EV-1 \emdash was named after Isaiah Bowman, a pre-eminent geographer and adviser to Franklin Roosevelt who was born in Waterloo County in the late 1800s.

But an American researcher says Bowman was a virulent anti-Semite, a racist and strong supporter of eugenics.

Sandford Jacoby, a Distinguished Research Professor in history, management and public policy at the University of California Los Angeles, raised a red flag earlier this month about Waterloo's Bowman connection after he learned about Bowman's history of anti-Semitism, racism and support for eugenics.

"After a short delay due to the pandemic, we removed the material this year," said university spokesperson Nick Manning.

The university is committed to address systemic racism in all its forms, he said.

Naming the building after Bowman does not reflect the values of the university today, Manning said.

The name was officially changed to Environment 1 in 2008, and the university just got around to removing the portrait and plaque.

Jacoby came across Bowman's University of Waterloo connection while researching U.S. immigration policy before and during the Second World War.

Knowing he had at least one family member, an uncle, who was murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust, Jacoby started researching what happened to his relatives under the Nazis.

That's how he learned of Bowman's work and influence and discovered online a publication called "The First 50 Years: A History of the University of Waterloo Environmental Studies Faculty," written by Robert Shipley, a retired school of urban planning professor in time for the faculty's anniversary in May 2019.

Jacoby was outraged after learning the University of Waterloo had named a building after Bowman and has never publicly explained why that was wrong.

Bowman was born in 1875 into a Mennonite family near Linwood, in what was then Waterloo County. The family soon moved, joining a Mennonite colony in Michigan.

He left Michigan to attend Harvard University, and eventually became a professor of geography at Yale. He became a Presbyterian and married the daughter of a Harvard professor.

He left Yale to become president of the American Geographical Society. In 1918, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson asked Bowman and the society to help redraw the borders of Europe after the First World War.

"It launched his career as a Washington insider," said Jacoby. "In 1938 he became an adviser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt on refugee affairs."

Bowman successfully supported very low quotas on Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazis. Instead of allowing Jews into the U.S., Bowman said they should be settled in places with few whites, so as not to "antagonize" them, such as Guyana, Kenya and the Philippines.

"Bowman was complicit in efforts to make it difficult for Jewish refugees to escape to the U.S. during the Nazi period," said Jacoby.

Bowman played a minor role in the 1945 San Francisco peace conference that led to the creation of the United Nations. During his time as president of Johns Hopkins University \emdash from 1935 to 1948 \emdash Bowman discriminated against African-American students and Jewish professors, said Jacoby.

Jacoby knew all this when he read the history of Waterloo's environment faculty and learned the university had named a building after Bowman. Jacoby immediately contacted Shipley with a bunch of questions.

That was on April 11 \emdash almost three years after Shipley's departmental history was first published.

Shipley said he emailed Jean Andrey, the dean of the environment faculty, to let her know Jacoby would be getting in touch with some questions about Bowman and the university.

Within days Bowman's photo and plaque were quietly removed.

The University of Waterloo is going about the situation all wrong, said Jacoby.

"Transparency regarding its removal of the Bowman plaque is vital," said Jacoby.

"The university ought to be proud, not secretive about what it's done \emdash students must learn about the past so that it will never be repeated."

Bowman's ideas can still be seen in headlines today.

"Just the other day Britain announced a plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda, stooping to racist, anti-immigrant sentiments of pro-Brexit voters," said Jacoby. "It's eerily reminiscent of Bowman's approach."

Mr. Bowman was born in Mannheim, a son of the late Rev. Moses C. Bowman and the former Lydia Shantz, Mr. Bowman, along with his wife, farmed at Guernsey, Sask., for many years; retired and returned to Kitchener in 1948; a member of First Mennonite Church. Roseville Mennonite Church (Detweiler Meeting House)

Services began in homes in the area with the arrival of the first settlers around 1822. A first meeting house was built about 1830 approximately a half-mile west of Roseville, on the south side of the road. One acre of land on the northeast corner of Lot 37, Concession 11, North Dumfries Township, was transferred from Samuel C. Snyder. The deed for the property was dated 1830, but it was not registered until August 1842. A stone meeting house was built in 1855 just slightly east of the old log meeting house; the church was dedicated on November 25, 1855 by the congregation's first minister, Jacob F. Detweiler. Henry Shantz, Enoch Detweiler and Solomon Gehman were the ministers who followed Jacob F. Detweiler.

Sunday School began in 1924 and in 1933 Young People's Bible Meetings were organized. The latter meetings were held in conjunction with those of the Blenheim Mennonite Church. A Sunday School classroom was added to the Detweiler church in 1956.

Moses Bowman, a layman from First Mennonite Church in Kitchener, was ordained minister to Detweiler Mennonite Church in 1938 where he continued to serve until the time of his death in 1964. The small congregation was served by visiting ministers until it disbanded in January 1966. Some of the remaining families are reported to have joined with Blenheim Mennonite Church at that time.

Bowman, Moses S., son of Moses C. and Lydia (Shantz) Bowman, was born at Mannheim, Ont., March 12, 1899; died at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital, Aug. 14, 1964; aged 65 y. 5 m. 2 d. On March 4, 1926, he was married to Mildred Schisler, who survives. Also surviving are 2 sons and one daughter (Harold, Stuart, and Enid-Mrs. Alex Crowley), 8 grandchildren, one brother and one sister (Edwin and Melinda). In 1939 he was ordained as minister at the First Mennonite Church of Kitchener. He served 25 years at Roseville and 3 years at Blenheim. He was a member of the Roseville Church. Funeral services were held at the First Mennonite Church , Kitchener, Aug. 17, in charge of Vernon Leis and C. F. Derstine; interment in Roseville Cemetery.

Hoover. --- Osborne, son of Anna Moyer and Moses Hoover, was born in Rainham Twp., near Selkirk, Ont., April 9, 1878; passed from this life at the Ontario Hospital, Hamilton, Sept. 22, 1950; aged 72 y. 5 m. 13 d. About two years ago he suffered a stroke, and his health was gradually failing. In 1913 he was converted; he served his Master in the Mennonite Church, where he was an efficient song leader, being a great lover of the hymns of the church. Twenty-two years ago he married Lavina Shuh, of Kitchener, Ont., who predeceased him April 19, 1947. He lived all his life on the home farm, near the church, until his health began to fail. Although no children were born to this marriage, his going is felt keenly, by the church, relatives, and neighbors. Funeral services were held Sept. 24 at the Rainham Mennonite Church, conducted by A. L. Fretz and S. F. Coffman. Interment was made in the South Cayuga Cemetery.

Shuh - Benjamin Bowman Shuh was born March 14, 1880, in Perth Co., Ont., near Listowel; passed away July 4, 1949; aged 69 y. 3 m. 20 d. In 1890 he moved with his parents to Kitchener, Ont. (then Berlin, Ont.). In 1898 he accepted the Lord and was a faithful member of the church until death. In the pioneer days of 1905 he homesteaded in Guernsey, Sask., on the land on which he still lived at the time of his passing. On Feb. 26, 1908, he was married to Elizabeth Betzner, who survives. Also surviving are 3 daughters (Mrs. Fred Bowman, Mrs. Merle Baker, both of Guernsey, Sask.; and Mrs. Jules Verbeck, Toronto, Ont.), one brother (Melvin, Kitchener, Ont.), and one sister (Mrs. Jean Lang, Preston, Ont.). Two children predeceased him in childhood. His passing was unexpected, occurring while he was attending conference sessions at Tofield, Alta., after a severe heart attack and a few hours' illness, at the home of J. B. Stauffer. He was a faithful worker in Sunday-school and church activities, having taught a young men's class in the early days and later an old men's class. Funeral services were held at the Sharon Mennonite church, Guernsey, Sask., on July 8 by Dan Schlabach and Stanley Shantz. Text: Jno. 11: 28b, Ps. 23. Interment was trade in the adjoining cemetery.

"Melvin L. Shuh, 66, of258 Sheldon Ave. North, died today in KW Hospital after a brief illness.

Born Sept. 29, 1889 in Kitchener, he was a s/o the late Mr. and Mrs.David Shuh. He was a well known dairy farmer in Waterloo Tp. for many years.

A member of Bethany United Missionary Church, he was active as a Sunday school worker.

His marriage to the former Grace Cressman took place June 24, 1914 in Kitchener.

Surviving are six sons, Earl, Robert, William and Frederick of Kitchener,Ward of Waterloo and Edward of Prescott; two daughters, Mrs. Raymond (Ruth) Barr and Miss Myrtle Shuh, both of Kitchener; a sister, Mrs.Eugene Langs of Preston and 11 grandchildren.

He had been a sufferer for a number of years, and had lately been confined to his bed for several months, but he bore his sufferings with Christian fortitude. He was resigned to remain if needful or depart this world if it were the Lord's will. He was a member of the Mennonite Church about four years. His remains were laid to rest in the Cressman burying ground. At the house the services were conducted by Jacob S. Woolner, and at the church by Joseph Nahogang, text Rev. 14: 13, and E.S. Hallman, text Job. 14: 14. At the close of the services they hymn was sung "Parted hands shall clasp again."

Shantz, Elven (1893-1984)

Elven Shantz (1893-1984) was the son of Menno and Susannah (Bowman) Shantz. He was born in Breslau, ON. In 1920 he married Mabel Weber, a sister of Urias K. Weber , then minister at Eby's Mennonite Church (later known as First Mennonite Church in Kitchener). Elven and Mabel Shantz returned from homesteading in Saskatchewan and joined the Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church , Kitchener, in 1929. Shantz became an active lay leader in that congregation. He was always considered a "liberal" Mennonite but had a great rapport with all Mennonites.

He served as secretary of the Military Problems Committee of the Conference of Historic Peace Churches , 1943-64. Shantz organized the Ontario unit of Mennonite Disaster Service in 1958 and was interim secretary of Mennonite Central Committee Ontario in the 1960s.
As a result of these activities, his farm background, his ability to speak the Pennsylvania German dialect and his fine rapport with the Old Order, Amish , and Conservative Mennonites, Shantz was asked to be their spokesman to government in their requests for exemption from government health insurance, Family Allowance, Old Age Security, Workmen's Compensation, and the Canada Pension Plan, and in gaining recognition of their right to establish private Christian schools. Shantz was active in the founding of Conrad Grebel College in 1961, the Mennonite Historical Society of Ontario, and the Ontario Mennonite relief sale in 1966. The members of many branches of Mennonites who attended and participated at his funeral attested to his commitment and service to Mennonite unity.

BURNABY, B.C. - Coralee Haist, veteran missionary to China and Hong Kong, was called to higher service on October 20, after a lengthy illness.

Miss Haist was born in August, 1889, near Drumbo, Ontario. Called to missionary service in China, she sailed in October 1917 and spent over fifty years ministering God's message to the people of that land, remaining in China during the war. She moved to Hong Kong in 1952 and opened two schools and a church in Chai Wan, a resettlement area for refugees from China.

While on furlough in Canada Miss Haist, who was fluent in the Cantonese language, assisted in the Chinese Church in Vancouver, where her ministry was greatly appreciated.

Her book "How Great Oh God Thou Art" recounts some of her harrowing experiences during the tumultuous years in China and how God's hand was always upon her.

She returned to Canada permanently in 1973 only when illness made it necessary. She developed pneumonia in October 1976, and the Lord saw fit to call His faithful servant home. Coralee is survived by one brother Oscar, Daytona Beach, Fla.; four sisters, Amray, Laura, Idella all of Burnaby, and Dorothy Witty of Bolton, Ont.; one adopted daughter Helen and her husband Francis, of Hong Kong; and three grandchildren, Coralee, Gordon and Pauline.

Rev. James House, B.C. District Superintendent, was in charge of the funeral service, assisted by Rev. George R. Upton, and Rev. John Ehrhardt.

Norman Alva Haist, retired Washington chicken rancher, died yesterday at his Scotts Valley home. He was 69. Haist moved to Scotts Valley four years ago from Auburn, Wash. He made has home at 900 Bethany drive. Haist was a native of Canada.

Survivors include his wife, Louella, Scotts Valley; two brothers, Amary Haist, Florida, and Oscar Haist, Detroit; four sisters, Cora Lee Haist, Hong Kong; Laura Haist, Vancouver, B.C., Idella Haist, North Burnaby, B.C., and Mrs. Dorothy Witty, Bolton, Ontario.

Final rites will be Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at the Irvin M. Smith and Sons chapel with Rev. L. T. Holdcroft officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Memorial park.
