    Notes:

    Edward Joseph KUBU

KUBU, Edward Joseph On April 25, 2018 we lost a father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Edward Joseph Kubu. He has gone to join our mother Mae (nee Oswald) where they no doubt are enjoying a good meal, a bottle of wine and a game of cribbage. Ed was born on August 12, 1918 amidst the Spanish Flu pandemic to Frank and Maude Kubu in St. Thomas, Ontario. The first of six children, he is pre-deceased by his brother Francis (Bud) and sisters Helen, Irene, Margaret and Dorothy. His early years are a subject of great speculation. He shared snippets of stories that did not always include totally legal pursuits; it was the Depression and you had to be creative. Dad and mom met at the Waterloo band shell just before Ed went overseas. His years of memorizing the army eye chart had finally paid off. He served with the 7th Field Company RCE primarily in Holland and Belgium, until the war ended. Dad held various jobs post military and his last was as owner/operator of a pre-cast concrete company - United Step and Metal in Hamilton. His wife Mae was the office manager. Upon retirement he and Mae moved to Winona Ontario where their vast gardens fed the neighbourhood. Mom died in 2013 and this forced Ed to learn how to cook. His culinary skills up to this point were limited to campfires and Coleman stoves during canoe, fishing and camping trips. He also bought a pool table and at 95 laughed when he was told it had a lifetime warranty. He drove until he was 96 and retired his license when he moved to the Orchards in Vineland. Our father loved verse and would recite stanzas from Wordsworth, Robert Service and his favourite "The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam." Despite enticing his daughters with the promise of $5 to memorize this tome, we declined. Ed leaves behind his daughters Anne (Bruce Krushelnicki) and Mary (Ralf Himmrich) as well as grandchildren Rachel (Peter Dyakowski), Joe Krushelnicki, Riley and Curtis Himmrich and great-granddaughter Louise Dyakowski. Special thank you to the staff at West Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Grimsby for their compassion during Dad's last days. To honour our father's wishes, cremation has taken place and no funeral is planned. Donations can be made to Friends of Killarney Park or the Bruce Trail Conservancy in Ed's memory. Ed Kubu lived a long and interesting life and we were proud to call him Dad.
