SPALDING, William Alexander

Bill died, suddenly, at Cambridge Memorial Hospital Emergency, on Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998. He lived all of his 87 years in Preston, the last 47 at 632 Lowther Street. He was the last surviving of nine children born to Fire Chief Andy Spalding and Mary Magdalena (Soeder) Spalding. His beloved Arnold, Elmer, Carl, Leota, Howard, George, Dorothy and Ann are gone and now Bill is too. For 60 years, 53 of devoted marriage and seven of courtship, the love of Bill's life was Gwen (nee Hilling) and he'd deeply missed her since her death on February 8, 1993. He was the stalwart and caring father of one son, Roger of Toronto and one daughter, Angela, who sadly predeceased her parents on October 8, 1990. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Mrs. Kathleen Spalding of Cambridge and several nieces and nephews. In his early years, Bill worked for Herb McCormack's Butcher Shop and later for Archie Krieg's Grocery Store, both of which were on King Street in Preston. From 1944 until his retirement in 1975, he was employed by Canadian Pacific Express. In the 1950's he was also a driver for the Preston Fire Department. He was a devout member of St. Clement's Church where he and Gwen were daily participants in the morning masses for many years. Friends and relatives are invited to remember Bill's life at a memorial mass in St. Clement's RC Church, 745 Duke Street, Cambridge, on Saturday, February 7, 1998, at 10 a.m. and at a reception which will follow in the parish hall.
