Devenny, Julie Christine, Hon. B.Sc. (Kin), M.P.T.

Passed away in the arms of her family caring for her at home in Waterloo on Monday evening. Julie was 30 years of age. She had waged a long and inspiring battle against cancer for nearly five years. She brought the same stubbornness and determination to her health challenge that she exhibited in basketball. Beloved daughter of Frances (Stanyer) and Dr. Paul Devenny, and best friend to sister Lisa (Sav) of London. Julie was predeceased by her grandparents, Marion and Wally Devenny and Marg and Jack Stanyer. Her grandmothers were tenacious in their support of Julie at many a basketball court. She will be missed by Aunts and Uncles, Betty and Doug Devenny of Kitchener and Myra and Barry Garvin of Brockville, Cousins, Scott (Jenna) Devenny of Salem, Jason (Kim) Devenny of Kitchener, Kim (Mike) Houle of Portage la Prairie, Jon (Sarka) Garvin of Mississauga and Laurie Garvin of Brockville. Julie appreciated the support and love of many special friends including Caroline Mombourquette, Jenn MacSporran-Basler, Meghan Dobson and Gillian Herman. She held a special place in her heart for Simba, her cat, who helped her through her many trials. Julie graduated from Waterloo Collegiate Institute before proceeding to the University of Waterloo for her kinesiology degree. She finished her academic career with her Masters in physiotherapy from Western. She also had a special friendship with her "girls" from physio school. Julie had a passion and a skill for basketball, playing throughout her high school and university years and even at times during her illness. She was awarded the Rookie of the Year Award for Canada in 2001/02. Many friends were made on the court. She did practice as a sport physiotherapist at GRSM until unable to work. Thanks Kristina, Kristy, and Surinder. Special thanks go to Nadia Califeretti for her personal and compassionate care for Julie. Thanks for going above and beyond. The professionalism and friendship of the staff in the chemo suite and on the oncology floor was very appreciated. Many thanks. Family will be present for visitation at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St. Kitchener (519-749-8467) on Friday, March 23, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. The funeral service for Julie will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at 10am. Rev. Lynne Bandy officiating. A reception will follow. Memorial donations may be made to Hopespring or the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre.
