Car Hit Broadside By Truck - By Brian Moore
A 19-year-old bride of three months was killed Tuesday night when a transport truck struck her car broadside at King Street and Montgomery Road. Mrs. Bernard Hodgson, 207 Fifth Ave., was dead on arrival at St. Mary's Hospital. She was alone in the car. Mrs. Hodgson was the former Sharon Rose Hagey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hagey. She and her husband moved to Kitchener from Ayr at the time of their marriage in December. The body is at the Barthel-Stager Funeral Home, Preston. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. It was the Conestoga Parkway's second traffic death since the opening last year of the Fairway-Montgomery Road section - the first link to be completed. Kitchener's road toll in 1968 now stands at five deaths, compared with 14 deaths for all of 1967. The truck, driven by 23-year-old Alan Whitlam, RR 5, Galt, was coming into Kitchener along King Street when it collided with Mrs. Hodgson's 1967 sedan, southbound on Montgomery Road. Mr. Whitlam was un-injured. The impact sent both vehicles over the curb of a traffic island, where they skidded to a stop. The car grazed a 60-foot high concrete light pole. Deep ruts were gouged in the soft earth of the island by the wheels of the truck cab. Damage to the truck, owned by Beaney Transport, Toronto, was $4,000. The auto was demolished. The crash happened in clear weather shortly before 9 p.m. The parkway's only other fatality occurred last Aug. 7 at the same intersection. An 81-year-old Kitchener women died when the care in which she was riding turned left from King Street onto Dixon Street (the continuation of Montgomery Road south of King) and collided with an eastbound car. There were 33 other accidents at the intersection in 1967, most of them involving vehicles making left turns from Montgomery to King or from King to Montgomery. John Webster, Kitchener's traffic engineer, said the intersection has been a problem one, but the reason remains a mystery. He said there may be problems, because the intersection has the first light on the parkway coming in from Highway 401, but added there is a speed transition from 50 to 35 miles an hour just before the light. Traffic should be slowing down in any case, he said. Visibility is excellent from all approaches. Shortly after Christmas, the light at Montgomery Road was changed to an advanced green to allow traffic making left turns to clear the intersection, Mr. Webster said. Since then there have been 10 accidents. Mr. Webster said it is far too early to make changes at the intersection because of Tuesday's accident. He said police must first report exactly what happened. Only after city traffic engineers have this information can they decide what to do to avoid a repetition, he said.
