Beloved wife of Harry Hostetler who predeceased her in 1950. Mrs. George A. Guthrie Passes At Greenfield

The death occurred on Tuesday night at the home of her son, James W. Guthrie, Greenfield, of Mrs. George A. Guthrie, in her 60th year. She had been ill for a lengthy period.

Mrs. Guthrie was born near New Dundee, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Toman. Her maiden name was Alberta Toman. She was a member of Knox United Church, Ayr, and was highly esteemed by a host of friends.

Surviving are three sons, William and Hugh, Blenheim township, and James W., Greenfield. Her husband predeceased her six years ago. Also surviving are three brothers and five sisters, as follows: Ira H. PRESTON, Charles Toman, 70, of RR 1, Preston, died Tuesday, at his home. Mr. Toman was born in Waterloo Township and had lived at RR 1, Preston, since 1916. He was the last survivor of the immediate family of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Toman. He had been employed for 50 years at Clare Brothers Limited, Preston. He was a member of Bethany United Missionary Church, Kitchener. Surviving are his wife, the former Cora Kinzie, and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, Earl, in 1958. The body is at the Barthel-Stager Funeral Home until Friday noon, when removal will be made to Bethany United Missionary Church, where the service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Interment will be in Park Lawn Cemetery, Preston.

Cherished grandma of Chris (Erica), Nathan (Andrea), Gina (Joel), Jaime (Andrew), Samantha (James), Jenelle (Chris), Aaron, Daniel, Rachel, Faith, James, Micah and Jonathan. Reta was born in New Dundee on January 15, 1928, and attended New Dundee Public and Continuation School before going to Kitchener Collegiate Institute and Stratford Normal School. She taught at S.S.#9, Lower Tenth, S.S.#7, Washington in Blenheim Township, and S.S.#6 Green's School in Wilmot Township, which were all one-room country schools. After her marriage, she continued teaching part-time and volunteered as an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher for a number of years. In her later years, she helped home-school some of her grandchildren. Together with her husband Frank, they founded a plumbing and electric business in 1952, where she assisted in the office until their retirement in 1998. She was also a founding member of Wilmot Senior's Woodworking and Craft Shop where she was Treasurer for 15 years. A member of Bethel Evangelical Missionary Church for 78 years, Reta used her God-given talents as treasurer, Sunday School teacher, pianist, organist, prayer and Bible Study group leader, as well as a Women's Ministry participant. She was also influential in setting up the church's archive system. Her circle of friends also included many International students from the local universities who were entertained in their home in the 1970s, many of whom she maintained contact. Because of this, they often travelled to visit these students in countries such as Liberia, Egypt, India, Mexico, Taiwan and countries in between. As a lasting legacy, and because of an interest in genealogy, she complied a family history in 2007 and a church history in 2008. She also enjoyed hiking, reading, sewing and quilting. Visitation was held at Bethel Missionary Church, 1531 Bridge St., New Dundee, on Tuesday, March 24, 2015. The service was held on Wednesday, March 25, 2015 at Bethel Missionary Church. Pastor Graham Burkhart officiated. Committal service has taken place at Union Cemetery, New Dundee. As expressions of sympathy, donations can be made to "Priscilla's Children," (an orphanage in Liberia with special significance to Reta) or The Gideons. Elgin Toman passed away after a brief illness on Saturday, July 23, 1994 at K-W Hospital, Kitchener. He was in his 81st year. Beloved brother of Ludena Sararas of Nithview Home, New Hamburg, Wallace Toman of Kitchener and Grace Holm of Roseville. Born in New Dundee, he was a son of the late Ira Toman and Ethel Kriesel. Predeceased by brothers Ralph, Ross and Pte. Burkle Toman who was killed in action overseas, and sister Rudene Bowman. Survived by a dear friend Brenda Wagler of New Hamburg, brother-in-law Howard Bowman , as well as several nieces and nephews. Elgin was employed at Clefthaven Farms for 35 years, and over so many years became good friends of Orville and Ruth Fried and families. Elgin continued to enjoy horseshoe pitching achieving the honour of becoming Canadian Horseshoe Pitching Champion. While a longtime resident of Nithview Home, New Hamburg, Elgin enjoyed many hours persuing his favourite sport of shooting pool. He was a member of St. James' Lutheran Church, New Dundee. The family received friends at the Westmount Funeral Chapel, Kitchener, where funeral services were held in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday, July 26th. Rev. Gerald Schwartzentruber and Rev. Jim Slack officiated. Interment New Dundee Union Cemetery.

He worked 47 years as an electrician and plumber, partnering with his brothers in Frank Toman Plumbing and Electric. Walter was a member of the New Dundee Board of Trade, the Property Committee of Camp Hermosa, Gideons International, and a volunteer with SOWERS. He loved spending time with his family and also enjoyed travelling, reading and more recently curling and lawn bowling.Beloved wife of Tina (nee Loewen) whom he married July 17, 1965. A son of the late George Guthrie and Alberta Toman, he was born in Blenheim Township. For many years he farmed on the 11th concession, west of Greenfield. Mr. Guthrie was a member of Knox United Church, Ayr. James W. Guthrie - James Wade Guthrie of Greenfield passed away at his home on Thursday, May 3rd. He was in his 75th year. Born in Blenheim Township, near New Dundee, he was a son of the late George A. Guthrie and Alberta Toman. In 1925, at the age of seven, he moved with his parents to the farm at Greenfield purchased from the Goldie family. He resided and farmed there the rest of his life. Mr. Guthrie was a member of Knox United Church, Ayr. Surviving are his wife, the former Doretha (Dee) Sherwood; three sons John of Kitchener, Robert of Edmonton and David of Woodstock; a daughter Mrs. Lyle (Myrna) MacCharles of Kingston; also four grandchildren. Douglas Earl Mitchell, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. David Mitchell, R. R. No. 4, Bright, passed away Monday morning at the home of his parents. He was in his 12th year and had been ill only one week. George Mitchell - Lifelong, RR 3, Ayr resident, George Lewis Mitchell died suddenly at his home on Friday, October 22, 2004. He was in his 73rd year. Born at the family farm where he farmed his whole life, George was the son of Wayne (Toman) and David Brown Mitchell. He was a long standing member of the Ayr Curling Club, Knox United Church, Ayr and a member of the Hayseeds/ Tartans Band. George competed in local and international plowing matches for fifty years, and was a former Director and Past President of the North Dumfries Plowing Match. George was also an avid deer and moose hunter. Surviving is his wife Shirley Douglas; his three daughters Brenda Mitchell of Paris, Pat and her husband John Elliott of Ayr, and Carol and her husband Mark Monaghan of Bermuda; his seven grandchildren Lindsay, Jesse, Tayler, Turner, Dawson, Jack and Sydney; his brother William Mitchell and his wife Dorothy of Ayr; his sisters-in-law Janis Mitchell of RR 4, Bright and Marilyn and her husband Bill Scott of RR 2, Drumbo; and his several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, George was also predeceased by two brothers Douglas and Robert Mitchell. Reverend Fred Hagle of Knox United Church, Ayr conducted funeral services at the Ayr Chapel, Wm. Kipp Funeral Home on Monday, October 25. Interment was in Ayr Cemetery. Pallbearers were Bruce Mitchell, Brad Mitchell, Ron Cochrane, Brett Butcher, George Ronald and David Dance.

Robert Toman Mitchell passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer on August 1st, 1998. Born on November 4th, 1937, he was in his 61st year. Bob was born and lived his entire life on the Mitchell home farm at RR 4, Bright. He was predeceased by his parents Wayne (Toman) and David Mitchell. Bob enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing, curling and horseshoes. His greatest love was his family and his special gift of music. He will be greatly missed by his wife and best friend Janis (Lehman) who he married on October 5th, 1957; his children Kim and her husband Dan Michiels of RR 3, Bright, Brad of RR 4, Bright, Robin and her husband Mike Ward of RR 1, Ayr, Trisha and her husband Mark Robb of RR 1, Drumbo and Sandra and her husband Brad Lennox of Keg Lane, Paris; his grandchildren Danielle and Kristin Michiels, Ashley and Russell Mitchell, Bethany and Justin Ward, Mitchell and Miranda Robb, Carter, Baylee and Rylee Lennox; and his brothers George and his wife Shirley and Bill and his wife Dorothy, all of Ayr.
