Death of Jacob B. Roth

Another of the old pioneers of this district was called to his eternal rest when Mr. Jacob B. Roth passed away very suddenly at his home on Jacob Street on Tuesday noon, June 2^nd. He was up and around as usual, but he was suddenly stricken with paralysis shortly before noon and passed away about one o'clock. In his death there is removed from this sphere a man of outstanding virtues, having lived a life of true Christianity. Endeared to a very large circle of friends through his pleasant, kind and unselfish ways, his many deeds of neighborly kindness will never be forgotten and his memory will be revered. The deceased was a faithful adherent of the Amish-Mennonite Church and a constant attendant at the church services. For many years he farmed on Bleams Road, but for the past nine years lived retired in town. The late Mr. Roth was born near Baden on April 2^nd, 1852, and thus reached the age of 79 years and 2 months. He was thrice married. On May 2^nd, 1875, he entered into the holy bonds of matrimony with Catharine Gordner, who died eight years later. On January 12^th, 1884 he entered his second matrimony with Magdalena Eiman. This union was blessed with one child which died in infancy. After the death of his second wife in 1892 he married a third time on September 19^th, 1893, Veronica Streicher. To them were born four sons. One son, William, was accidently killed by a falling tree while cutting wood in the bush. His sorrowing widow and three sons are left to mourn his demise. The children are, Samuel S., near Baden, Rudy and Moses on the homestead. He also leaves ten grandchildren, one brother, David B. Roth, and one sister, Mrs. Jacob Gordner, both residing in Baden. The funeral will take place from his late home this Friday morning to Steinmann's Church for service followed by interment in the church cemetery.

Baden, Dec. 7 - David B. Roth, 83, well-known resident of Baden, died today as a result of injuries sustained when he was knocked from a load of hay by a swinging barn door one month ago. The deceased was engaged in unloading a wagon load of hay, assisted by his wife, when a sudden gust of wind caught the door and knocked him to the ground.

The last Mr. Roth, a life-long resident of this district, was born near Baden in 1853. He was a son of the late Mr. John and Katie Roth. A member of Steinman's Amish Mennonite church, Mr. Roth won distinction during his younger life when he used oxen to cultivate his farm instead of horses. Mr. Roth is also the owner of a valuable collection of Indian relics as well as several oxen yokes he made himself.

Surviving are his widow, three sons, Samuel, owner of Roth's Garage n Baden, Noah of Tavistock, and Daniel of Baden, two daughters, Mrs. S. Ruby of Kitchener, and Mrs. P. Steinman of Baden, one sister, Mrs. Jacob Gardner of Baden. One son and one daughter predeceased him.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1.30 o'clock from the residence to
Steinman Amish Mennonite church with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Mrs. Rachel Gordner

The death of Mrs. Rachel Gordner occurred here on Thursday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nancy Zimmerman, with whom she had been staying for the past two years. She had been ill for over a year. The deceased, who was 85 years of age, was born in Baden, a daughter of the late John Roth. After her marriage to Jacob Gordner she resided for many years on a farm there. Her husband, one son and one daughter predeceased her. Surviving are 2 sons and 2 daughters, Mrs. Kate Schultz and Mr. Noah Gordner, Baden, and Mrs. Nancy Zimmerman and Mr. Moses Gordner of New Hamburg. The funeral will be held on Sunday afternoon with private service at the home of Mrs, Zimmerman at 2 o'clock followed by public service in the Baden Mission and interment in the Shantz Cemetery, Erb's Road.

John R. Litwiller

As a result of a heart attack, Mr. John R. Litwiller passed away last Friday night, April 10, at his home in Petersburg at the age of 70 years, 5 months and 18 days. The deceased was a lifelong resident of Wilmot Township and was well known and highly esteemed. He was a faithful member of the St. Agatha Amish-Mennonite Church. The deceased farmed for about 36 years and two years ago retired and moved to Petersburg.

The deceased was married to Magdalena Schwartzentruber, who survives him, besides two sons, Herbert of Waterloo and Clayton, of Southwest Wilmot and three daughters, (Gertrude) Mrs. Ben Herner, at home, (Ida) Mrs. Norman Gascho, Petersburg, and (Alice) Mrs. Reuben Bender, of New Hamburg. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Aaron Wagler, Baden, and Miss Katie Litwiller, St. Agatha, and eleven grandchildren.

The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon from his late home to the St. Agatha A.-M. Church for service, followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery. The services were conducted by Rev. Peter Nafziger of St. Agatha and Rev. Moses O. Jantzi of Baden. A large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives attended the funeral.

She was a kind and loving wife and mother, always willing to help others. We feel our loss sadly, but we know that our Father doeth all things well. Death of Christian Litwiller

Death came very suddenly to an esteemed resident of New Hamburg late on Monday evening, when Mr. Christian R. Litwiller passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Milton Leis, near Mannheim. Mr. Litwiller had been working at Wellesley during the day and went to his daughter's home for the night. He had his supper and retired about 10 o'clock apparently in his usual robust health but shortly thereafter was seized with a heart attack and passed away before medical aid could be summoned. The deceased was born near St. Agatha and spent his whole life in this community. For the past twelve years he was a resident of this town. He was aged 56 years, 9 months and 13 days. He leaves his wife, who before her marriage was Katharine Kropf of St. Agatha, besides his daughter, Mrs. Leis and four sons, Edward of New Hamburg, Ivan of Hamilton, and Rudy and John of Lancaster, N.Y. He is also survived by one brother, John Litwiller of Wilmot, and two sisters, Mrs. Aaron Wagler, of Baden, and Miss Catharine Litwiller, of St. Agatha. The funeral was held from his late home here yesterday forenoon with service in the Amish-Mennonite Church, near Baden, followed by interment in the A.-M. Cemetery. The funeral service was conducted by Bishop Daniel Steinman and was attended by a large circle of relatives and friends.

Moses M. Roth died after a two weeks' illness on Tuesday at his home near St. Agatha at the age of 48 years, 2 months and 22 days. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. David B. Roth and lived in Wilmot all his life. He had a large circle of friends who were shocked at his death. He was married to Katie Bast, who survives him with a family of eight. He also leaves his parents, 3 brothers and 1 sister namely, Noah M. Roth, East Zorra, Dan, near St. Agatha, Samuel M., of Baden, and Mrs. Peter Steinman, near New Hamburg. The funeral will take place from his late home this forenoon to the St. Agatha Amish-Mennonite Church of which he was a faithful member. Interment will take place in the adjoining cemetery.

A member of St. Agatha Mennonite Church, and a lifelong resident of the K-W area.

Son of the late Abraham Herner and Catherine Roth; husband of the late Elizabeth Everatt; father of Kenneth of Kitchener and Earl of Route 1, Breslau; brother of Annie Kropf and Noah of Waterloo. Also survived by four grandchildren and three great grand children. Predeceased by two brothers, Christian and Benjamin.

Friends may call at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, 621 King St. W., Kitchener, after 7 p.m. this evening until noon Friday when removal will be made to St. Agatha Mennonite Church for funeral service at 2 p.m. with Rev. WELLESLEY-Elmer Roth, 50, of Wellesley died suddenly Tuesday.

He was born in Wilmot Township April 8, 1911, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. David K. Roth and Barbara Jantzi.

He was a member of Maple View Mennonite Church and worked at the Jantzi Feed Mill, Wellesley.

Surviving are his wife, the former Esther Leis, whom he married April 29, 1952 in Wellesley; six brothers, Alvin of London, Ont., Michael and David of Wellesley, John of Ailsa Craig, Milton of Toronto and Ernst of RR 1, Wellesley, and two sisters, Mrs. Ernst (Nancy) Bast of Wellesley and Mrs. Nelson (Barbara) Zehr of RR 1, St. Agatha.

The body is at the home where a short service will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m., followed by a memorial service at Maple View Mennonite Church at 2 o'clock. Bishop Christian Streicher will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Milton, our father, on September 30, 2016 at the Emerson Care Home in Manitoba. Milton was born in Wellesley, Ontario on May 29, 1923. He married Clara Ropp in 1945 and with their four daughters they moved to Scarborough, Ontario. He worked for many years at Suburban Metal Industries designing and selling straps and tie down equipment for the transportation industry. He is survived by his daughters: Diane (John) Macintyre (Tammie, Fiona, Connie and Glen) of Milton, Donna (Tony) Klassen, (Clarise, Nathan, Nevin, Juanita, Nadine and Vernon) of Gretna, Manitoba, Sharon (Allan) Gilbert (Colin, Wesley, Stuart) of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Sandy Schaaf (Candice, Hayley) of Barrie, Ontario and by many great grandchildren. Milton is survived by his sister, Barbara Zehr and brother, David Roth. Passed away, peacefully, in the presence of family, on Thursday, March 2, 2006 at her residence, Nithview Home, New Hamburg. Melinda was formerly of RR2 Petersburg. She was born 91 years ago in Wilmot Township a daughter of the late Abraham and Leah (Roth) Gingerich. Melinda was a member of Steinmann Mennonite Church, Baden where she had been involved with the W.M.S.C. and had taught adult Sunday school. Melinda had volunteered at Guelph Correctional Centre in the M2W2 program, with her husband, for many years and enjoyed sewing and knotting comforters for relief, gardening, flowers and time spent with her family. Beloved wife of the late Harold Hofstetter, who predeceased her April 5, 1996. Loving mother of Ken and his wife Anna Mae Hofstetter of Kitchener, Nyle and his wife Kathleen Hofstetter, and Laurene and her husband Doug Ferguson, all of Baden. Sadly missed by grandchildren Kevin Hofstetter, Patricia Hofstetter and partner Doug Lambert. Tammy Harnum, Larry Hofstetter. Brian Hofstetter, Marvin Hofstetter, Suzanne and husband Paul Brears. Sherry and husband Larry Dubue, Michael Ferguson and friend Zoe Chen and Andrew Ferguson and by great-grandchildren Hunter Lambert, Austin Harnum, MacKenzie and Madison Hofstetter, Emma, Erin and Lee Brears, Christine, Joseph, Jacob and Jessica Dubue. Dear sister-in-law of Edna Gingerich of Baden, as well as Hofstetter brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews. Melinda was predeceased by two great-grandsons, Lawrence and Jonathon Dubue and was the last surviving member of her family having been predeceased by brothers and sisters, Reuben and Fanny Gingerich, Adeline and Ezra Gerber, Sarah and Allen Wagler, Almeda and Eldon Wagler and Rudy Gingerich. FINED $25 FOR FAILING TO STOP AFTER ACCIDENT

In the Kitchener police court on Thursday last, Ruddy Litwiller, Glasgow Lane, Kitchener, was found guilty of failing to return to the scene of an accident after hitting a horse and buggy and was fined $25 and costs or 19 days in jail. Although Litwiller produced eight witnesses to support his claim that he was not out of the house at the time of the accident, the prosecution produced a bill for gasoline which Litwiller purchased at a local gasoline station, the clerk at the gasoline station swearing that he sold several gallons of gas to Litwiller on the night of the accident. Litwiller claimed to have bought no gas on Dec. 24th but on Dec. 23rd, the night before the accident. The magistrate said he believed the witnesses who gave evidence on behalf of Litwiller were mistaken and he accordingly imposed the above fine, the witnesses also disagreeing in their evidence to some extent. Litwiller asked for an adjournment until Wednesday as he wished to enter an appeal, which was granted.

He was born in Wilmot Township 87 years ago, a son of the late Aaron Wagler and the former Leah Litwiller. He was a member of Steinmann Mennonite Church, R.R. 2, Baden and a member of the Especially for Seniors, Baden. Allen enjoyed gardening has his hobby.

Lovingly remembered by his wife, the former Sarah Gingerich. Sadly missed by his sister, Elmina Wagler of New Hamburg; his sisters-in-law, Adeline and her husband Ezra Gerber of Millbank, Mrs. Alemeda Wagler of R.R. 2, Baden, Melinda and her husband Harold Hofstetter of R.R. 2, Petersburg, Mrs. Fannie Gingerich of New Hamburg; his brother-in-law, Rudy Gingerich and his wife Edna of Baden. Also remembered by a number of nieces and nephews.

Allen was predeceased by three brothers, Ervin, Eldon and Milton and two sisters, Alda and Mrs. Edna Wagler and two brothers-in-law, Harvey Wagler and Rueben Gingerich.

Friends and relatives may call at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg, after 7 p.m. tonight (Monday) and until Wednesday at noon, when transfer will be made to Steinmann Mennonite Church for the service at 2 p.m. with Pastor Fred Lichti and Mahlon Gerber officiating. Kitchener, July 22 - Motoring to Au Gres, Michigan yesterday to attend the funeral of a brother, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Roth, of Baden, were reached as they prepared to cross the border at Sarnia and informed their son, Ernest, 21, had been killed with two friends in a railway crossing crash near their home. Today they arranged for the funeral of their young son. The other victims were Glen Schwartzentruber, 16, and Raymond Snyder, 11. All were Mennonites. The three were killed instantly when struck by a Canadian National Railways train in charge of Edward Milner, Toronto, conductor, and William Flint, Toronto, engineer, on a crossing leading to the Samuel Roth farm. They were returning from a field, where they had been dusting potatoes. Roth, who was married to the former Mildred Roth last September, also is survived by his parents, one brother, Calvin, and two sisters, Agness and Mrs. Rufus Bender, Baden. Schwartzentruber, a son of Mr. And Mrs. Simon Schwartzentruber, is survived by his parents, six brothers, Arthur, Nyle, Clare, Elverne, Simon and Waybe, and six sisters, Leona, Ellen, Erma, Rita, Ruth and Arlene, all at home. Snyder is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Snyder; a brother, Vernus, at hoem, and three sisters, Mrs. Pearl Bechtel, Mrs. Ethel Roth and Ruth Snyder, all of Baden.

Roth.-Ernest Timothy, son of Samuel S. and Barbara (Jantzi) Roth, was born in Wilmot Twp., Waterloo Co., Ont., Sept. 22, 1925; died July 21, 1947; aged 21 y. 9 m. 29 d. He met his death along with Ray Snyder and Glen Schwartzentruber, in a railway crossing accident on his parents' farm, near Baden, Ont. Surviving are his ten-month bride (Mildred May Roth, Petersburg, Ont.), his parents, 2 sisters (Ellen-Mrs. Rufus Bender, of Baden; and Agnes, a student at E.M.C., Harrisonburg, Va.), 2 brothers (Calvin and Nevin, at home), and many other relatives and friends. Early in youth he accepted Christ as his personal Saviour and was baptized into the fellowship of the Wilmot A.M. Church, near Baden. He was loyal and deeply conscientious, cheerful in any task assigned to him. Funeral services were conducted at the home by M. O. Jantzi and at the church by Peter Nafziger and Oscar Burkholder. Text: Amos 3:6. Burial was made in the Steinman A.M.Cemetery, near Baden.

Cherished and loving mother and grandmother of David Bender and wife Lisa Richardson and their children Dalton, Claire and Blaine; Kris Wagler and her children Kaitlin (Travis), Brendan (Samantha); and Jennifer Bender and her partner Joanne Perschbacher.

Eileen is survived by her sister Marianne Schlegel, brother Armand Roth and his wife Liz, son-in-law Tim Wagler, sisters-in-law Sandra Roth, Nodaine Bender and Irene Bender as well as by her many nieces and nephews.

Eileen is now reunited with her beloved husband Ezra Bender, who predeceased her on October 17, 1997. Predeceased by her brothers and sisters-in-law; Ray Schlegel, Melvin Bender (Mabel), Reuben Bender (Alice), Elton Bender (Elda), Verda Bender, Curtis Bender, Fanny Gingerich (Reuben), Mary Gingerich (Curtis) and Ervin Bender.

Eileen was a longtime faithful member of Steinmann Mennonite Church, Baden. She was an active member of the New Hamburg business community, especially when she owned and operated the Town Pantry. Eileen valued the art of home making, spending time with her children and grandchildren was of utmost importance. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and farm life.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron Street, New Hamburg, on Saturday, January 4, 2020 from 2 - 4 & 6 - 8 p.m. The memorial service will take place on Sunday, January 5, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Steinmann Mennonite Church, 1316 Snyder's Road, Baden, with Pastors Steve Drudge and Sara Erb officiating. Interment to take place in Steinmann Mennonite Church Cemetery in the spring.

Wm. Iutzi Second Victim Of Auto Crash

William Iutzi of Baden died in St. Joseph's Hospital, London, On Tuesday night from injuries received in an auto accident near Elginfield on Sunday afternoon, September 12^th. His wife was instantly killed in the crash.

The accident occurred when the car in which they were passengers, and driven by Wm. Steckley of Milverton, collided with a car driven by Alfred Christiansen of Battle Creek, Michigan, and crashed into a tree.

Mr. Iutzi received severe internal injuries and had been in a critical condition at St. Joseph's Hospital, London, since the accident. Doctor's had hoped to perform an operation, but Mr. Iutzi did not rally sufficiently.

The late Mr. Iutzi was a prominent young farmer and was well known as a breeder of Holstein cattle and was active in agricultural and livestock organizations. He was a member of the Steinman Amish-Mennonite Church.

He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Z. Iutzi of Baden and was 43 years of age. Surviving him are two young daughters, Erma and Merle, his parents, two brothers, Wilfred at home and Roy, New Hamburg, three sisters, Mrs. Edna Herner and Mrs. Stanley Schmidt of Baden and Mrs. Eldon Gingerich, R.R. 2, New Hamburg.

The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon, October 1, with private service at the house at 2: 00 o'clock, followed by public service at the Steinman A.-M. Church at 2: 45 o'clock, and interment in the adjoining cemetery.

MRS. STANLEY SCHMIDT

Mrs. Stanley Schmidt, ol New Hamburg, formerly of Baden, died Thursday at St. Mary's Hospital in Kitchener, at the age of 56.

The former Elda Iutzi, she was born Aug. 13, 1911, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Iutzi. She was a member of the Steinman Mennonite Church.

Her husband and daughter, Shirley, died in 1966. She was also predeceased by a brother.

Surviving are a daughter. Mrs. Joseph (Fern) Martin of New Hamburg: two brothers. Wilfred and Roy both of Baden: two sisters. Mrs. Eldon (Eva) Gingerich of New Hamburg and Mrs Edna Herner of Baden and three grandchildren.

The Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home was in charge, and the service was held Sunday afternoon at Steinman Mennonite Church. Rev. Albert Zehr and Elmer Swartzentruber officiated and burial was in the church cemetery

On May 10th Noah Gardner's daughter, Rita the eldest left Baden with George H. Redfern of Kitchener, married salesman, to Montreal presumably on a business trip. Not against the wishes of her parents and expecting to return on Sunday evening in order to be at the place of employment in a Kitchener office. But she never returned alive.

Mr. Redfern poisoned her in a room in the Hotel Viger, making a clear getaway from Montreal. She had feared to go with him somehow, but he was so insistent. Rita was engaged to Mr. Harry Capling to be married this summer. Mr. Redfern pretended to be very wealthy and so kept the friendship of the family. The motive for the crime seems to hinge on a grudge against young Capling and so avenged himself by killing this highly respectable young 23 year-old girl of Baden.

May 22nd at London Ontario Mr. George Redfern was arrested this morning and jailed. But after being in for two hours he died - apparently administered Strychnine to his own body causing death.

Poison Victim Buried at Baden

Died From Strychnine Poisoning in Montreal Hotel - Murder Suspected

This community was stirred into excitement last week when it became known that a girl found dead in an hotel in Montreal, happened to be Miss Reta Gordner, the 22 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Noah Gordner, of Baden. She was an office clerk in the Kaufman Rubber factory at Kitchener for some time and there made the acquaintance of one G. H. Redfern, who was for some time past a frequent visitor at their Baden home. On Saturday, May 10th Redfern is alleged that he had to go on a business trip to Montreal and asked the girl to go with him and she reluctantly accompanied him with the apparent intention of returning to her work on the following Monday morning. When she did not return to her home on Monday night, as usual, some alarm was felt and it was on the following day that the sad disclosure was made that it was her dead body which was found in the Montreal hotel.

Redfern and the girt left from Galt on Saturday evening for Montreal and were registered for two separate rooms at the hotel under assumed names On Monday Redfern is said to have told the chambermaid that his sister was ill and was not to be disturbed. On the following day her dead body was found lying on the bed in Redfern's' room. A postmortem examination revealed the fact that the girl had died from strychnine poisoning but otherwise all her organs were in normal condition.

Redfern purchased strychnine at a Kitchener drug store about one month ago. He wanted it to kill rats at the Dowler store where he was employed as a clerk. He is wanted by the police for questioning in regards to the death but so far he has eluded the police and no trace of him has been found. He is wanted for non-support of a wife and further investigations revealed the feet that he had drawn a loan on two insurance policies and it is alleged had forged his wife's name to the cheques therefor.

The case seems to be baffling to the police as no motive for the crime, if such has been committed, has so far come to light.

Mr. Gordner went to Montreal and identified the body of his daughter. Her remains were brought to Baden and interment took place last Friday with a private service at the house and interment in the Baden cemetery. Rey. Mr. A. E. Pletch, of the New Hamburg Evangelical church conducted the obsequies.

The tragic death of Miss Gordner is keenly felt by a large circle of friend. and much sympathy is felt for the parents and her two sisters in their sad bereavement The deceased as in her 23rd year and was a cheerful and popular girl among her friends in the village.

Probe Suicide Report

Niagara Falls, Ont. authorities received word that George H. Redfern is believed by his relatives to have committed suicide in that city.

The Falls police are conducting an investigation and thorough search for Redfern, believing, they say. he furnished Kitchener authorities with a fake suicide clue in order to cover op his disappearance.

It was learned that a man answering Redfern's description registered at a Niagara Falls hotel on May 12 without any baggage, and left the hotel at 9 o'clock on Tuesday night giving no forwarding address. In his room were found a soft felt hat, from which the label with the manufacturers name had been removed. A soiled collar and bow tie.

Detective Chief George H. Callinan received a telegram from Kitchener authorities stating that Redfern's family received a letter on Tuesday from Redfern, postmarked Niagara Falls, NY., in which Redfern expressed his intention of committing suicide by going over the cataract.

BIESEL, Carol (nee Gordner) - In failing health, passed away peacefully, at The Westmount in Kitchener, on Friday, September 4, 2009, in her 88th year. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Glenn Biesel. Good Funeral Home, 171 King St S., Waterloo, today (Thursday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Family prayers will be offered at the funeral home on Friday, October 8, 1999 at 1: 30 p.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Lourdes RC Church, 173 Lourdes St. W., Waterloo at 2 p.m. with Rev. Edward Sheridan officiating. Interment at Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo.
