    Notes:

Jacob Uffelman was born in Waterloo in 1860. At age 15 he apprenticed himself for four years to Theodore Bellinger who operated the Corner Store. Upon completion of his apprenticeship, Uffelman was employed with John Shuh and Company for five years. He left this company to go into business for himself in Breslau where he ran a general store for three years before selling out and moving to Elmira where he remained for four years.

In 1891 Uffelman purchased the store and stock of his former employer John Shuh and Company, and ten years later acquired the Ontario Seed Company. He turned his attention to the sauerkraut business in the 1920s, forming the Silverthreads Sauerkraut Company with buyers across the country.

In the 1895 election, Uffelman was first elected to town council. He again became an alderman in the 1902 and 1903 elections. As mayor in 1904, Uffelman led council in its decision to raise money to encourage the construction of a railway line from Waterloo to Wellesley. The following year, Uffelman oversaw the official opening of the Waterloo Public Library.

Following his term as mayor, Uffelman was appointed a justice of the peace.1a

William (Bill) Uffelman was born in Elmira on January 3, 1889 the son of former mayor, Jacob Uffelman. The family moved to Waterloo where William attended the Berlin High School. Upon graduation he worked as a bank clerk in Berlin (Kitchener), Brantford, New Hamburg, and Toronto. In 1914 he enlisted in the 118th Battalion North Waterloo serving overseas for four years. He later worked as a foreman at the Dominion Rubber Company for 15 years and from 1940-1948, Uffelman served as the Town of Waterloo's Assessment Commissioner and Tax Collector. Athletically inclined, Uffelman played hockey with the Waterloo and Kitchener O.H.A. teams and was also a member of the Toronto Argonauts team. His civic interests included the Waterloo Board of Trade where he served as president, the Waterloo Young Men's Club, the Masonic Lodge, the Germania Lodge (Independent Order of Odd Fellows) and the Waterloo Musical Society where he served as an officer. Uffelman was first elected as a councillor in 1927. He successfully completed four terms, two as reeve from 1929-30, prior to his election as mayor in 1931. His one year in office saw the abolishment of the Waterloo Sewer Commission and the construction of a new sewer disposal plant for the town. Through the Unemployment Relief Committee of the Provincial Government, a program of local improvements was undertaken. The town also assisted the Public School Board with a loan for the construction of the Elizabeth Ziegler school. In 1933 and 1934 Uffelman returned to council as an alderman.
