    Notes:

Death of an Aged Couple, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McLachlan, of Galt - Foremost in all the good work in our town for nearly thirty-five years, this aged couple passed to their well-earned rest within a few hours of one another on Saturday and Sunday last. In Galt, it is not necessary to say aught of the lives of these two old friends. Earnest, helpful, Christian, in its fullest sense, they held the affection, respect and esteem of all with whom they were brought in contact for the past month it had been known that the illness with which Mr. McLachlan was afflicted precluded the possibility of recover, and while the inevitable had to be accepted there were but few in our town but felt and expressed the greatest regret. His, certainly, since taking up his residence in Galt, was a well spent life. Quiet, unassuming, yet sufficiently prominent in all good work to bring him into contact with all classes, not an organization, temporal or spiritual, but held him in the highest esteem and honored him for his efforts for the good of all. He had a worthy helper in his wife, and while the aged couple enjoyed the esteem of their fellow townsmen they also enjoyed the warmest affection of their children, now grown to men and women, and had the all sufficient satisfaction of knowing that they left behind them worthy descendants whose hands the reputation of their parents was not likely to suffer. Mr. McLachlan came to Galt in 1847, accompanied with his late wife and two children, leaving behind him five grown up sons and daughters by a former marriage. These children subsequently followed and are all, if we mistake not, settled in the United States. Before emigrating, Mr. McLachlan was an elder in his native church and almost immediately on his arrival here he was also selected as one of the elders of the late Rev'd James Strang's Church, and Superintendent of the Sabbath School of the Church. In later days becoming a member of the Knox Church, he was also elected an elder, retaining that honorable position as long as his health permitted him to attend the church. On the Temperance question Mr. McLachlan gave no uncertain sound, and in all the various organizations in the town was ever foremost in the fight against intemperance. Honestly and conscientiously he fought the evil. Nothing damped his efforts in this direction, and whatever standing or effect these organizations have ever had amongst us was very largely due to him. Of the family, during his last illness one son and two daughters were present by his bedside, while of the other members of his family ne son is in North Carolina, a daughter in Racine, Wis., and one near Topeka, Kansas. The Funeral on Tuesday afternoon was a fitting testimonial to the respect in which the aged couple, together in life and together in death, were held in the town. All classes joined in attendance, and thus paid their last tribute to those whose names were long "household words" amongst us.
