    Joan Patricia Braniff passed away at Waterloo on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 with her family by her side after a long struggle with Alzheimer disease at the age of 78 . Joan was born in East Amherst, New York on March 25, 1931, the only member of her Irish-German family of 7 siblings, to be born outside Ontario. Joan's parents and older siblings had emigrated to New York State to find work during the Depression. The family returned to Kitchener shortly after her birth. She was the daughter of the late Victor and Mildred (nee Ott) Braniff. Loving and dedicated mother to her children David Schaffer (Fran), Ken Schaffer (Lola), Gerry Schaffer (Draupadi), Bonnie Tancredi (Frank), Lori Mara, Stephen Schaffer, Christine Brohman (Bob), foster son Peter Davidson, loving step-daughter Laura Leeder (Wayne), 26 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

    Survived by brothers Ron Braniff and Ted Braniff and sister Laurie Czarny.Predeceased by her brother Jerry Braniff and sisters, Marjorie Komer, Carol Lindsay.

    Joan taught her family the values of hard work, compassion, honesty and a commitment to community. Joan worked at many jobs including Ottawa Grocery, as a census manager for Statistics Canada and operating a craft business known as The Treasure Trough in Salem and Fergus. Joan was an artist.

    She enjoyed Bingo in her retirement years and was known for her many acts of kindness. She will always remain in the hearts of her family. She remained in her own home with the help of her family as long as she could. Unfortunately, Joan could not live out the remainder of her life on her own terms but she tried her best, never complaining.

    Joan's family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 3-5 and 7-9 pm at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St., Kitchener, 519-749-8467. Parish prayers 8:30 pm Friday evening. Prayers will be offered at the funeral home at 9:20 am Saturday, October 3, 2009 followed by procession to St. Anthony Daniel RC Church, 29 Midland Dr., Kitchener for Funeral Mass at 10 AM.
    Interment Woodland Cemetery followed by a reception in the Parish Life Centre.

    As expressions of sympathy donations to the Alzheimer Society of KW would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).
