Swartz.--Abraham Swartz of Kitchener, Ont., was born Mar. 12, 1852; died at the age of 80 y. 7 m. Bro Swartz was converted in early manhood, joined the Mennonite Church and remained faithful to his faith until death. He was predeceased by his wife (Susannah Bergey), nearly 8 years ago. He is survived by 1 son, 5 daughters, 1 brother, 1 sister, 30 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Bro. Swartz was known for his optimism, ever looking on the better side of things, expecting things to come, and ever had faith in the Lord, the cause and His people. He will be missed in the church circles. The funeral was conducted at the First Mennonite church by Bro. C. F. Derstine, the pastor. Burial at Latchaw Cemetery, Petersburg, Ont.

Roxie and Vera were married and Allan supported the family until such time as each of the boys left home to be married. When Al and Gracie were married, they lived with his mother and continued to maintain the home. When Fred and Florence married they moved in with Mother Dodd and Allan and Gracie moved out (providing the home rent free to Fred and Florence). Fred and Florence moved out when Fred went to WWII.

Mel Swartz of the KW Collegiate Board has received word of the death of his brother, I. W. (Bill) Swartz, 77, of 16245 Indiana Ave. , Detroit. Death, which occurred yesterday after a lengthy illness, was due to pneumonia. A farmer, builder and artist, he was born in Brown City, Mich. He farmed in the district for many years and retired in Williamsburg, Ont. With five other farmers, he inaugurated the first rural free mail delivery in this district. Each farmer in turn carried the mail for the other five, thus giving each daily mail delivery at his home. Surviving are one son, Howard of Detroit; one daughter, Armintha of Detroit; three brothers, J. L. Swartz of Pontiac, Mich. , Levi of Burlington and Mel of Kitchener. The body is resting at the Michigan Ave. Funeral Home, Detroit, where a public funeral will be held tomorrow at 1 p. m.

Mrs. Wendell R. Shantz. 170 Pandora Ave., died Friday at K-W Hospital. She was 90.

A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Abram Swartz, she was born in Blenheim Township and lived most of her life in Kitchener. She was a member of the First Mennonite Church and the Ladies Aid Society. She was predeceased by her husband in 1949 and by one sister.

Survivors include three sons. Lloyd S.. Waterloo; Ward. Port Credit, and Clayton. Roseville; three daughters. Mrs. Edwin (Leota) Feick, Kitchener. Mrs. Vernon (Vinetta) Witmer, Wilmot Township, and Mrs. Lloyd (Dorothy) Schmitt, New Dundee; a brother. Wellington. Waterloo; three sisters. Mrs. Jemima Witmer and Mrs. Clifford Cressman. both of Kitchener, and Mrs. Susan Weber. Waterloo; 22 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren. and two great-greatgrandchildren.

A son (Stanley) preceded her. In her youth she accepted Christ as her Saviour and united with the Mennonite Church of which she was a faithful member until death. Funeral services were conducted at the St. Jacobs Mennonite Church, Oct. 19, by Noah Hunsberger, assisted by Oliver D. Snider. Interment was made in the cemetery at Three Bridges.

ORTON S. DEVITT

Orton S. Devitt, 74 of Kitchener, died Friday at K-W Hospital after a brief illness. He was a former employee of the Canadian Blower and Forge Company.

Mr. Devitt was born April 26, 1883, in Wilmot Township, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Aaron K. Devitt. He had lived in Kitchener for the past 65 years.

His wife, the former Elizabath R. Ruppel, predeceased him. Surviving are two sons, Carl of Kitchener and Victor of Brantford; four daughters Miss Myrtle Devitt and Miss Mary Devitt, both of Kitchener, Mrs. Roy G (Catherine) Bauman of Waterloo and Mrs. David (Erma) Hoffer of Elmira; two sisters, Mrs. John Farr of Thistletown and Mrs. Armintha Brown of Winnipeg; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The body rested at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home where services were conducted Monday at 2 p.m. with Rev. E. E. Hallman, pastor of Emmanuel Evangelical United Brethren Church, Waterloo, officiating. Burial was in Waterloo Mount Hope Cemetery.

Former County Warden Witmer Dies In Hospital

J. Willard Witmer, a former warden of Waterloo County, and former Reeve of Wilmot Township, died December 27 at Stratford Hospital after a brief Illness at the age of 69.

The late Mr. Witmer farmed in Wilmot Township for many years and owned and operated Witmer's General Store in Baden for 18 years, retiring two years ago.

He was active In Wilmot township politics, serving as reeve from 1954 to 1960 and was a member of Wilmot council for 14 years. He was warden of Waterloo County in 1955.

Mr. Witmer was born May 10, 1898 in Wilmot, a son of Mrs. Isaiah Witmer of Kitchener and the late Mr. Witmer and was a life long resident of this area. He was a member of the Mannheim Mennonite Church and was a Sunday School teacher and a former member of the church council.

Surviving besides his wife, the former Avon Snyder whom he married on March 31, 1920 in Waterloo Township, are his mother, who lives In Kitchener; one son, Gordon E., Kitchener; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Eileen) Reier, RR1, New Dundee, and Mrs. Ralph (Esther) Holmberg, Waterloo; four brothers, Rev. Leslie, Baden; Joyce and Lincoln, both of Kitchener, and Homer, Bridgeport; four sisters, Mrs. John (Stella) Kelil, and Mrs. Emmanuel (Etta) Swartzentruber, both of Kitchener; Mrs. Arthur (LUy) Snyder, Baden, and Mrs. Edward (Susie) Knechtel, RR 2, Petersburg; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was predeceased by one son, Calvin and three grandchildren.

The service was held at Mannheim Mennonite Church Saturday afternoon with Rev. Gordon Bauman officiating and burial followed in the adjoining cemetery. The Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home was In charge.

Dear mother of Myrtle and her husband Elam Horst of Baden, Earl and his wife Lynne of St. Jacobs, Donald and his wife Gladys of St. Thomas. Lovingly remembered by Jim and Alex Holtom of Alberta. Beloved grandmother of 23 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; Sister of Vinetta Witmer and Clayton A. The most important aspects of dad's life were his love and faithful service for the Lord. His love of music included being in a male quartet and as congregational song leader at Shantz Mennonite Church, later singing with the Fairview Senior Choir.

The family farm is now the Foxwood Golf Course. Later he enjoyed being a custom farm operator in the Roseville area. Among his interests, dad won awards ploughing with a team of Percheron horses at local ploughing. matches. His lifetime love of crokinole will not be forgotten. He also served as a Director of Mennonite Aid Union for many years.

Friends and family will be received at the Centre Auditorium of Fairview Mennonite Home, 515 Langs Drive. Cambridge, today (Monday) from 2-4 p.m. and Tuesday at the Westmount Funeral Chapel, 1001 Ottawa St. South (at Westmount Rd.). STANLEY KOCH

The death occurred at the K-W hospital on Sunday morning, May 18, at 11 o'clock, of Mr. Stanley Koch, 36, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Koch of Conestogo. The departed underwent an appendicitis operation on Tuesday, May 6, and from this he failed to rally. He was born at Conestogo on the Koch homestead on Jan. 30, 1905. His wife, the former Ruth Kufske, and a daughter Mary survive as well as his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Koch, six brothers, three sisters, Lester of Kitchener, Phares, Orton, Oliver, Roy and Charles of Conestogo, Mabel, Mrs. Herb Kufske of Williamsburg, Gladys, Mrs. Norman Mar-tin of St. Jacobs, and Vera, Mrs. Nelson Snyder of near Conestogo. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon with a brief private service at the home of his parents at 2 o'clock, after which public services were held at the Mennonite church at St. Jacobs with burial in the Mennonite cemetery near Three Bridges. Rev. Oliver Snider was in charm of the service, while Bishop C. F. Derstine of Kitchener delivered the sermon. The remains rested at Dreisinger's Funeral chapel, Elmira, until Monday evening and then rested at the Letter and Dreisinger Funeral Home until Tuesday afternoon when they were brought to his parents' home.

KOCH, Oliver S. (1912-2008) - After a long and full life, Oliver died peacefully, on Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at Caressant Care, Fergus and is at Home in the presence of his Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. His family takes great comfort in the knowledge that he is now enjoying the beauties of Heaven and being able to see his Saviour face-to-face. He especially had a heart for mission work among our native Indians in the North and was always available to help in any way he could. Dad and Mom together had an extended "family" in supporting children through World Vision. Dad very much enjoyed children and many will remember him for the entertainment he provided on their rides to and from school. He was also involved in sales both at Snyder Milling in Waterloo and B&M Farm Equipment, Elmira. Dad was a storehouse of quips and weather-related sayings. Farmers Almanac has now lost their competition! Oliver's family will welcome friends and relatives at the Dreisinger Funeral Home , Elmira on Thursday, January 31, 2008 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. On Friday at 11 a.m. transfer will be made to Countryside Mennonite Fellowship, Hawkesville, for funeral service at 1: 30 p.m. with Ron Shantz officiating, followed by interment in St. Jacobs Mennonite Cemetery. In his memory, donations to Christian Aid Ministries or World Vision would be appreciated by the family as expressions of sympathy. We give our loved one back to God, and just as He first gave him to us and did not lose him in the giving, so we have not lost him in returning him to Him... for life is eternal and love is immortal.

Roy was born near St. Jacobs, Ontario, Sept. 6, 1913, to Charles and Minerva (Swartz) Koch. The seventh of 10 children he is survived by a sister Gladys Martin, Elmira, Ontario.

He married Martha Horst Aug. 8, 1942. She survives along with six children, Robert (Linda Epp) Koch, Colorado Springs, Arlene (Ken) Holdeman, Bloomington, Minn., Richard (Rhonda Peck) Koch, Goshen, Rodney Koch, Salem, Ore., Jane (Stanley) Oyer, Middlebury, Sheila (Millard) Graber, Goshen; 18 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six brothers; two sisters; and granddaughter, Joyce Graber.

A graduate of the University of Western Ontario, at Waterloo, and Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, he was a churchman all his adult life, ordained as a pastor in 1936, at age 23, and as a bishop in 1951. In addition to pastoring congregations for more than 34 years, he was a teacher, administrator, writer, editor and development officer. He preached well into his 90s.

In Ontario, he pastored St. Jacobs Mennonite Church from 1936 to 1957. From 1957 to 1970 he served at South Union Mennonite Church in West Liberty, Ohio. He also filled the bishop's role in Ontario and Ohio, overseeing and mentoring. While pastoring in Ontario, he also taught at the Ontario Mennonite Bible School and Institute in Kitchener during the '40s and '50s, serving as its principal from 1952 to 1957. He frequently travelled as a speaker, evangelist and story-teller, in Canada and the States. He wrote numerous articles for church and secular papers, served as editor of the "ministers' section" of the Builder, and of the Mennonite Renewal Services Newsletter. He wrote several pamphlets and edited the book-length "My Personal Pentecost" with his wife for Herald Press in 1977.

He filled many posts as administrator and committeeman while living in Ohio and, after 1970, in Indiana. He served as Moderator of the Ohio and Eastern Conference in the 1960s, and as Moderator of Mennonite General Conference from 1963-1965. He served on the Mennonite Church's Board of Missions, Board of Education and Commission for Christian Education. In the early 1970s, he was Indiana-Michigan Conference Minister, and then development director for Bethany Christian High School in Goshen. He was subsequently Executive Secretary of Mennonite Renewal Services well into the 1980s.

In his 70s, he did several stints as interim pastor, and graded Bible studies of prison inmates for Gospel Echoes Team in Goshen, into his 90s.

Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at East Goshen Mennonite Church, Goshen, where a 9: 30 a.m., funeral service will be held on Wednesday, with Pastor Steve Slagel officiating. Jim Swartz, born in Kitchener, was an outstanding basketball and baseball player in his youth, and a supporter of sport in the Region of Waterloo throughout his life.

He was the leading scorer and captain of the K-W YMCA Blues (basketball) which he led to the Canadian Championship in 1953. After his playing days, Swartz coached basketball at Wilfrid Laurier University on a volunteer basis in the early 1960s. He refereed basketball games at both the high school and university levels and he administered the KW Referees Association and conducted training clinics for two generations of referees.

Swartz was actively involved in the Kitchener Sports Association for over forty-eight years, serving as secretary of the Association for forty years. He was instrumental in the development of all of KSA's projects: The Kitchener Memorial Auditorium, Jack Couch Park, the Waterloo County Hall of Fame, Lion's Baseball Park, Breithaupt Baseball Park, the Boxing Academy, and the KSA Volunteer's Dinner and Scholarship Program. He also helped to raise funds for many individuals and teams traveling to national and international sport competitions.

Swartz served on the Board of Governors of the Waterloo County Hall of Fame as secretary and treasurer, and as chairman of the Sports Research Committee.

He was married to the former Judy Siebert for fifty-one years, and the proud father of four children Nancy, Tom, David and Jennifer. Grandpa to Erin, Meghann, Joel, Laurie, Josh and Kelly.
