    Peter H. Sims Dies at Kitchener

    Peter H. Sims, of 86 Highland Ave. Toronto, vice-president of the Dominion Life Assurance Company, and late secretary of the British American Assurance Co., died of pneumonia last Saturday at the home of his son, H. J. Sims, in Kitchener. The late Mr. Sims was born seventy-six years ago in Wellesley Township, the son of Rev. James Sims.

    In his early days Mr. Sims taught school and was principal of the Waterloo Central School for some time. Later he turned to insurance entering the service of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company. In 1875, with a number of others he formed the Mercantile Insurance Company of which he was general manager for seventeen years. He removed to Toronto in 1892 to become secretary of the British America Insurance Company, which post he relinquished in 1912. At the time of his death he was vice-president of the Dominion Life Assurance Company and it was while attending a meeting of the Company at Waterloo that he contracted his fatal illness.

    He is survived by his widow, one son. H. J. Sims, barrister, of Kitchener, and a daughter, Mrs. Ross Stewart, of Toronto. The funeral took place in Toronto on Monday

    ISABELLA JEFFERSON SIMS.

    The death of Isabella Jefferson Sims occurred Sunday afternoon at the home. of her neice, Mrs. N. S. Irwrn, at the age of 87 years and 3 months.
    Born in Guyshow. N S., Isabella Davidson lived in Ontario until 1880, when she was married to Ed. Jefferson. They came to Manitoba and took up a homestead in the Katrime district, now known as the Stanley Seed farm. From there they moved to Portage la Prairie, and it was while on a trip to Chicago in 1894 that Mr. Jefferson died. In 1907, she was married to Wm. A. Sims, and for about. twenty years they resided in the Swan River district. After leaving there they moved to Vancouver, where Mr. Sims died about five years ago. For the past. four years Mrs. Sims has made her home at Beaver.

    The funeral took place from the Beaver United Church Tuesday morning, with Rev. S. R. McLeod officiating. Following the service the remains were conveyed to Portage la Prairie, and interment was made in Hillside cemetery.

    Floral tributes were placed on the casket from, "Norman, Isabel, and Fam ily."Beaver Ladies Aid and W.M.S."

    Notes:

    Born in Waterloo, Harvey J. Sims graduated from Trinity College, University of Toronto, and completed his law course at Osgoode Hall. In 1921 he was made King's Counsel and became a well-known authority on municipal law, acting as Kitchener's solicitor for many years. He was a leading authority on insurance law and was author of Life Insurance Contracts in Canada.

    He was one of the founders of the K-W Granite Club, president of the Ontario Lawn Bowling Association and president of the Ontario Curling Association. He was a member of the Kitchener rink which represented Canada at the 1932 winter Olympics. He was a charter member of the K-W Rotary Club and served on the senate of the University of Toronto. His country residence, Chicopee, was one of the outstanding examples of amateur landscaping in the province.

    HARVEY J. SIMS

    Harvey J. Sims, senior member of the law firm of Sims, Bray, Schofield and Lochead, passed away at his home "Chicopee" on June 8th, 1945. Born in Waterloo on December 25th, 1871, the son of the late Peter H. Sims and Jemima Cook, he attended the public school there and later graduated from the Berlin High School. He completed his law course at Osgoode Hall, Toronto, and was called to the bar in 1894 and enrolled as a solicitor of the High Court of Justice (Ontario). Entering the University of Toronto, he took the course in Political Science and Law and received the degree of LL.B. in 1897. From 1894 to 1897 Mr. Sims also attended lectures at Trinity University and received the degree of B.C.L. in 1896, being the gold medallist of the year.

    Returning to Berlin, now Kitchener, he entered into partnership with the late Alex. Millar, K.C., with whom he had been articled in 1889. This partnership continued until the death of Mr. Millar in 1918.

    Mr. Sims was made a King's Counsel in 1921. For a number of years he acted as city solicitor and became well known as an authority on municipal law. He was the author of "Life Insurance Contracts in Canada" and served for many, years as general counsel of the Mutual Life Assurance Company of Canada. Mr. Sims also served as director of the Waterloo Trust and Savings Company and of the Economical Fire Insurance Company. He was a past president of the Waterloo County Bar Association.

    Mr. Sims always took an active interest in athletics and field sports, including football, bowling and curling. His life hobby was landscape gardening. In 1920 he purchased "Chicopee" and built his residence there in 1929. Well known as a tree culturist he devoted many years to beautifying the grounds, doing much of the planting himself. His first wife was the former Florence K. Roos, who predeceased him in 1939. He is survived by his widow, Gay Estell Sims, two sons, J. Kenneth Sims and William H. Sims, and one sister. Three grandchildren also survive. Mr. Sims was a Rotarian, a member of Twin City Lodge, A.F. & A.M. In religion he was a Presbyterian, a member of St. Andrew's Church. In politics he was a Liberal.

    Cattle Breeder S. G. Sims, Dies Aged 83

    Samuel George Sims, 83, of Stonewall, Man., known for his work with Holstein-Friesan cattle, died Saturday in Stonewall- Rockwood health unit hospital.

    Mr. Sims was born in Galt, Ont. At the age of three, he came to Manitoba with his family, travelling by boat and stagecoach, and settled in St. Boniface. His father was in the woollen business.

    The family farmed near Argyle where Mr. Sims received his eduication. Later he served as reeve of Woodlands. He farmed in the Argyle district until 1916 and during this period he began his work with Holstein cattle.

    Mr. Sims was responsible for bringing Canary Korndyke Alcartra, holder of a world butterfat record, to the west. He is reported to have developed the early dairy queen, Ruby Nig, and to have master-minded the building of the Crerar herd of Manitoba and the Selkirk Mental hospital herd.

    During his active career, Mr. Sims held the posts of agriculture representative for the Winkler region, local manager of the Holstein Western Livestock corporations for the western region, Manitoba director of the Holstein-Friesan association of Canada for 12 years, and president of the association in 1930.

    Mr. Sims judged Holstein cattle from the eastern boundary as far west as Vancouver Island.

    Surviving are his wife Mary Luke: a son Sam who is an architect with the Manitoba government; a daughter Gail of Stonewall; two brothers, W. H. Sims of Winnipeg and Harvey Sims British Columbia.

    Funeral service was Tuesday in the United church, Stonewall, with Rev. G. Wiznuk officiating. Burlal was in Stonewall cemetery. A. D. MacKenzie funeral home, Stonewall, was in charge.
