Promment Citizen Succumbs To Complications Following Pneumonia Attack

    Offered Brave Struggle

Daughter Of Former Postmaster Here; Funeral To Be Held Sunday Afternoon

Fearlessly facing death with a true Christian heart, Ida E. Ruppel, beloved wife of John S. Weichel, prominent Elmira merchant, succumbed to complications following a severe attack of pneumonia two years ago, at her late home, 24 Park Street, this (Thursday) morning about 7 o'clock.

News of her death cast a pall of gloom over the community where she had lived all her life and to which she had endeared herself by her fine womanly qualities.

Death came peacefully. The heart which once had beaten so strongly in thoughtful consideration of others, fluttered, wavered and finally stopped as the spirit departed. Her passing ended an illness which started about eight years ago with an attack of influenza. She recovered somewhat but never regained her former strength and about two years ago was again forced to her bed by pneumonia. For the past year she had been very ill but about a month ago her condition became acute. Although fighting an unequal battle she bravely struggled, but gradually weakened.

    Bids Family Farewell

Believing that death was near she summoned the members of her family to her bedside on Sunday, and there bade them a fond farewell. Her mind appeared exceptionally active, her facilities unimpaired and her words on this occasion, again revealed the kindliness and thoughtfulness which so inspired her during her active lifetime.

She rallied somewhat Sunday, but lapsed into periods of unconsciousness, apparently the result of extreme weakness. At times during the week she rallied and a faint smile or movement of the hand indicated that she recognized those grouped around her bedside. On Wednesday the family gathered close as death again seemed imminent. Throughout the day and night close vigil was kept and early this morning death came.

    Daughter of Former P.M.

The late Mrs. Weichel who was in her 68th year, was the daughter of the late John and Mary Ruppel, the former of whom was postmaster here for many years. About 1890 she became the bride of John S. Weichel. A faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran church, she formerly was actively identified with the various church organizations and her untimely death will mean a decided loss to the congregation.

In addition to her husband she is survived by one daughter, Marie; and four sons, Charles, Oscar, Hilbert and Harry, all of Elmira. One sister, Mrs. (Rev.) J. C. Borth, of Staten Island, N.Y., and six brothers also survive: Oscar, John H., and George, Elmira; Charles, Buffalo; Henry, Tavistock; and Otto, of Hamilton.
The funeral will take place on Sunday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, from her late residence to St. Paul's Lutheran church and thence to Elmira Cemetery for interment, with Rev. Messrs. Gallmeier and Rolph, officiating.

    Ex-Postmaster
    O. W. Weichel, Former MP, Dies

    O. W. (Mike) Weichel, former Waterloo North MP, died Friday at St. Mary's Hospital after an illness of three weeks. He was 74. Postmaster in Elmira for 35 years, Mr. Weichel resigned in 1958 to run as a Conservative candidate in the federal election of that year. He completed three terms before retiring in 1965. His election with a majority of 9,342 ended a Liberal reign in Waterloo North which extended back some 41 years. He was the first Conservative to serve the constituency since his uncle, the late W. G. Weichel, defeated Mackenzie King here in 1911. Mr. Weichel spearheaded the drive in the House of Commons which brought Canada its first national fitness plan. He was slated for a parliamentary secretaryship when the Diefenbaker government fell. Born in Elmira, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Weichel. He was educated in Elmira, schools and after the First World War at Shaw's Business College in Toronto. He was employed at his father's hardware firm, M. Weichel and Son, Elmira before enlisting at the age of 22 and going overseas in the First World War with the 118th Battalion. He won the Distinguished Conduct Medal for bravery in the field and lost a leg in action two months before the end of the war. He was later awarded the Queen's Coronation Medal for civilian service and the Medal of Merit by the Canadian legion. The loss of his leg ended what might have been a long sports career. Two weeks before he was wounded, he signed a professional baseball contract to play in the Michigan - Ontario League, and he had been promised a tryout with the team which later became the Toronto Maple Leafs of the NHL [National Hockey League]. He had played senior hockey with the Ontario Hockey Association before the war and was active in soccer, tennis and track and field, carrying off the 100-yard championship for his regiment. With his sports career at an end, he turned his sports interest to executive work. He was active in the OHA [Ontario Hockey Association] as a coach, manager or executive for more than 30 years. He served on the Ontario Minor Hockey Association executive for nearly 20 years, including two years as president, and was still an honorary executive member of the Toronto Hockey League. In the 1930s and 1940s he coached and managed Elmira hockey and baseball teams and was a past president of the Elmira Badminton Club. Several years ago he was honored by the Ontario Sports Writers Association which made him a guest of honor along with such sports personalities as Floyd Patterson, Tiny Thompson and Don Larsen at the Association's annual Sports Celebrities Dinner in Toronto. Mr. Weichel never lost his keen interest in baseball and hockey. He was looking forward to another trip to Florida, this month to watch the Boston Red Sox training sessions.

    Gained 150 Prizes

A past president of the Ontario Lawn Bowlers Association, he collected some 150 prizes in this sport. Active in veterans and miliary organizations, Mr. Weichel had been a member and trustee of Kitchener branch of the Royal Canadian Legion for nearly 30 years. He was also a member of the Waterloo, Polish and Elmira legion branches, the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans Association, the officers' and Sergeants' Messes of Victoria Street Armory, K-W Naval Veterans Association, and Wing 404, RCAF [Royal Canadian Air Force] Association. He was a past president of Elmira Community Service Club, former group chairman of the Elmira boy scouts for 15 years and a recruiting officer during the Second World War. At one time in the war he served on the executive of 23 organizations. Besides heading war bond and savings stamp drives, he helped promote and build Elmira's present arena. Next to sports, in which his connections are too numerous to fully catalogue, his favorite hobby was music. One of the finest tenors in this part of the country, he formed a concert troupe, the Happy Cousins, which played more than 1,200 concerts in Canada and the United States before an estimated 300,000 people. He taught singing for nearly 15 years in Elmira and at one time had his own orchestra. In 1928 he won a gold medal for Ontario tenors. He had been a bass drummer in Elmira and military bands, and also played the violin. Chairman of Elmira centennial activities, he was also a member of the board of governors of Waterloo County Hall of Fame, a life member of Waterloo County Historical Society, the K-W Big Brothers Association, the Retired Businessmen's Association and former president of Elmira Polar Kings, who won the OHA intermediate B championship. Since his retirement, he spearheaded a $30,000 fund-raising campaign for the Waterloo County Children's Aid Society. A Lutheran, he attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Elmira and was an elder of the church.

    Married in 1923
His wife, the former Olive Hughes of Toronto, predeceased him in 1966. They were married in Toronto in 1923. Surviving are two sons, A. Ross, city editor of The Record, and Earle H. of Oakville, former Kitchener alderman and manager of corporate public relations for the Ford Motor Co., of Canada, two brothers, Charles of Southampton and H. L. (Lefty) of Elmira; one sister, Mrs. F. C. Forwell, Elmira, and four grandchildren. One brother, Harry, predeceased him. The body will be at the Dreisinger Funeral Parlor, Elmira, until noon Monday when removal will be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Elmira, for service at 3 p.m. Rev. Dayton Fritz will officiate. Interment will be in Elmira cemetery.

Lefty and Gertrude Weichel to mark 50th jubilee
    By Record Staff Writer

Elmira - One of the area's colorful personalities, H. L. (Lefty) Weichel, and his wife, Gertrude, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday with a reception for 75 close relatives from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Galaxy Inn here. The couple were married June 29, 1921, at the little farm house of the bride's parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Schedewitz, in the Village of Yatton, four miles west of here. They left on a honeymoon in a Baby Grand Chevrolet roadster for London, Ont., Hamilton and Niagara Falls, but between Baden and New Hamburg they were caught in a thunder storm. By the time they got the top up on the car they were drenched. Then a tire went flat and they sought refuge in a farmer's shed to change it. "I told my bride, with such a poor start, things are bound to get better," Mr. Weichel said. The couple lived in Yatton for four years and then moved to Elmira where they have remained. Mr. Weichel began his business career as a salesman for Robin Hood Flour Mills of Calgary, and later spent 10 years in sales with Hall-Zrd Foundry Co. of Hespeler and Gilson Co. of Guelph. Mr. Weichel purchased a shoe store in Elmira's business section from Martin Shoemaker and operated it for 17 years. After the death of his uncle, Henry (Big Mike) Weichel, in 1943 he sold the shoe store and went into the hardware business with M. Weichel and Son Ltd. He is president and treasurer of the firm and at 75 the oldest active merchant in Elmira. The Weichels have been life-long members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church here. Mr. Weichel was a member of the board of finance for 15 years as well as serving as treasurer of the congregation. For 14 years he was a member of the board of governors of the Lutheran Laymen's League and treasurer of the Lutheran Hour radio program for which he collected donations and looked after 35 stations in Ontario and Eastern Canada. Mr. Weichel was a member of Elmira town council for 21 years, reeve for six years, mayor for 3 ½ years and warden of Waterloo County in 1954. In 1955-56 he was president of the Ontario Motor League's North Waterloo Automobile Club, and in 1963 was president of the Ontario Good Roads Association. He also served as president for two years of the Canadian Arthritis Society's Elmira zone. Since 1950 he has been Elmira justice of the peace. Currently he is a member of the board of governors of the Waterloo County Hall of Fame. Lefty Weichel's name became widely known when he was chairman of the Happy Cousins Concert Company which in 25 years entertained at 1,200 dinners, socials and garden parties across Ontario and centres in the United States. The company included Lefty's brothers, the late O. W. (Mike) Weichel, the Elmira postmaster who became Waterloo North MP; and the late Harry Weichel; as well as nephews and cousins Ross Weichel, Percy and Norman Ruppel, Murray Ruppel, Otto Klinck and others. Mrs. Weichel has been a convener [sic] of dressings for the Elmira branch of the North Waterloo Cancer Unit for 18 years and for the same period of time has been active with the Elmira-Woolwich Agricultural [should be Horticultural?] Society. An avid gardener, the many flower beds that surround the Weichel home at 84 Arthur St. are her work, as are many crafts in the home. The couple are in good health and spend every summer weekend at their cottage in Port Elgin. Their children are Mrs. Wayne (June) Pettie of Elmira; Mrs. G. J. (Gloria) Wegener of Lake Charles, La.; and Michael, 60 Gilmour Cres., Kitchener. The couple's first-born, Arthur, died in infancy. There are six grandchildren. Anniversary celebrations will continue in August when Mrs. Wegener and her family can join the other children for a family dinner here.
