John and Harriet lived in Calgary, Alberta where Nelson worked as a civilian for the Air Force at Lincoln Park in Calgary and later for the Army at the Currie Barracks in Calgary. He also worked in a supply depot for the Army in Ontario until health issues resulted in his being discharged. Nelson and Harriet were of the Catholic faith.
