Daniel Hagey, "the second son of Jacob and Susannah (Schwartz) Hagey, was born July 12th, 1784, and died November 14th, 1859. He was married, in 1806, to Elizabeth Bergey (Bergey then spelled Birgi), who was born February 26th, 1784. They resided in Franconia Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, until 1822 when they, with their four children, moved to Canada. With them came Henry Clemmer, father to John Clemmer, Joseph Bergey, and Abraham Becker. It took them 21 days to make the journey, arriving at Preston about the 20th of October. They settled on a farm, a little north of Preston, where they both died. She died September 16th, 1854. Their family consisted of six children"

One who will soon be classed among the old settlers of Preston is Christopher Kress, who by his energy and pluck has accumulated considerable property and who has greatly aided in giving Preston a good name as a desirable place of resort for the cure of rheumatism and kindred diseases, through its mineral baths.

The mineral springs were struck by one Peter Erb while boring for salt in 1838, which he never obtained. He placed no value in the sulphur water he had so struck. After abandoning boring, the water of the spring was employed for driving an overshot wheel of a wagon making shop, occupied by one Daniel Hagey, until Mr. Samuel Cornell obtained from Mr. Joseph Erb sufficient land near the spring to erect an hotel. Mr. Cornell with great energy built suitable premises and a bath house with boiler to enable him to furnish hot and cold baths.. His undertaking proved successful but death terminated his career. The property was sold and Christopher Kress became its owner. He greatly enlarged, improved and ornamented it and the invalids who have sought and obtained relief at the Preston mineral baths count by the hundreds.

Jacob Hagey, "the eldest son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Bergey) Hagey, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, January 13th, 1808. In 1822, he, in company with his parents and others, came to Canada and settled at Preston, Ontario. He was married to Leah, daughter of Christian and Sophia (Ruth) Schwartz. She was born November 15th, 1811, and died May 28th, 1882. They resided at Preston, on the farm now possessed by their youngest son, Levi. He died April 9th, 1893. When a young man he was ordained deacon of the Mennonite Church for the Hagey field of labor. He was a man that was held in high esteem in the community for his many excellent social and religious qualities. It is doubtful whether he had a single enemy. His family consisted of eight children".

HAGEY - On the 19th of April, 1893, near Preston, Waterloo Twp., Waterloo Co., Ont., of infirmities of old age, Deacon Jacob Hagey. Buried on the 22d at Hagey's meeting-house where relatives and friends met to pay the last tribute of respect. His age was 85 years, 2 months and 26 days. Funeral services by J.B.. Gingrich at the house and Moses Bowman at the meeting-house, from 2 Cor. 4: 17, 18 and 5: 1. Bro. Hagey was ordained to the office of deacon on the 2d of December, 1832

Bishop Joseph Hagey, " the second son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Bergey) Hagey, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, June 11th, 1810, and came to Canada with his parents when twelve years of age. Some time during the summer of 1832 he was married to Sophia, daughter of Samuel and Rebecca (Eby) Bricker. She was born December 20th, 1812. Soon after their marriage they moved on the farm now possessed by their son, Joseph B., where they resided until his death which took place December 31st, 1876. On May 31st, 1851, he was ordained as a minister of the Mennonite body, and on October 11th, 1852, he was ordained bishop which position he held until his death. He was well received by both his and other denominations. His fame as a preacher was widely known and served to fill the houses of worship to their utmost capacity wherever he was known to officiate. His sermons were short and always well seasoned with a grand exhortation to be more like our Lord and Master. He was greatly respected by the young and always gladly received by his many friends. His last days on earth were much clouded with the church controversy which was carried so far as to cause a division among the Mennonites. Just at this time came the winged arrow of death and bore the soul of Bishop Hagey from the scenes of his life's activity, from the companionship of his faithful circle of followers, and from the worrying of this world, to the regions beyond the skies where trials and temptations are no more, where Christ reigns supreme, in Heaven. His last words were, 'O what a good and merciful Lord we have'. His end was peace. His widow is still living and has her home with her daughter, Mary. Their family consists of eleven children"

Hagey, Joseph B. (1810-1876)

"Joseph B. Hagey: bishop and farmer; born 11 June 1810 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania to Daniel and Elizabeth (Bergey) Hagey. He and his twin brother, Daniel, had an older brother, and a younger brother and sister. In 1832 he married Sophia Bricker (20 December 1810-4 November 1895). She was the daughter of Sam Bricker, famous for his role in raising funds in Pennsylvania to buy the German Company Tract (much of Waterloo Township) from Richard Beasley. Joseph and Sophia Hagey had six sons and five daughters. Joseph died 31 December 1876 and was buried in the Breslau Mennonite Cemetery. It was said that three hundred carriages were part of the funeral procession, with one thousand persons in attendance at the service.

In 1822 Joseph Hagey came with his family from Pennsylvania after his father went bankrupt in business there. They lived on a farm just north of Cambridge (Preston). After their marriage, Joseph and Sophia lived on the farm owned by her father; they became the owners in 1837.
On 10 February 1839 Joseph Hagey was ordained as a minister, probably by Benjamin Eby , and on 31 May 1851 he was ordained as a bishop to assist the aging Eby. He served in the Hagey congregation as a pastor, but as a bishop carried responsibility for all the congregations in Waterloo Township. His years of service followed those of a very charismatic bishop, and Hagey never received the acclaim of his predecessor. In his later years he was faced with division within the Ontario Mennonite Conference. The division was sparked by a revival in Solomon Eby's congregation in Port Elgin, Ontario in 1870, and a similar revival within Waterloo County. These Methodist-style prayer/revival meetings were often held in homes, and were not yet generally accepted within the Mennonite community. Initially Hagey responded positively and baptized converts from the Port Elgin revival. However he then declined to baptize the Waterloo converts because of objections that arose within the conference leadership. Although another bishop finally baptized this group in 1871, the controversy festered and finally resulted in the division that created the Reformed Mennonites (later part of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ ).
Although Hagey was not successful in maintaining peace in the Ontario Mennonite community, he was a peacemaker in spirit. He assisted several attempts to help settle a church conflict in Indiana as a participant and served as the nominal leader (as bishop) of an Ontario delegation that attempted to mediate the conflict. Joseph B. Hagey was a longtime leader in the largest Mennonite settlement in Ontario during troubled times; his failure to preserve unity does not diminish the magnitude of his service to the church."

Breslau (Cressman) Mennonite Church

Services were begun in Breslau in 1815. In 1834, Benjamin Eby's log meeting house, which had been built in Berlin in 1813, was moved to Breslau to the Cressman farm. Preaching services which were held every four weeks began in the reconstructed meeting house in 1837. A new brick church was built in 1856, at which time the old log meeting house was moved to Frederick Schaefer's brickyard. The old building may have been used for storage or an office until approximately 1880 when it was clad with white "Breslau Brick" from the brickyard, and used as a home by Frederick Schaefer and his family. The address of the house is reported to have been 18 Woolwich Street; it was still standing in 1985, according to Alder 1985, with the original log walls possibly preserved within the brick ones.

A summer Sunday School was begun in June of 1872. It was held in the Breslau schoolhouse until 1877 when it was moved to the church. Sunday School continued on in the summers only until 1889 when Sunday School classes began to be held all year.

The 1856 white brick church was taken down in March 1908, and was replaced with a new white brick church. In 1968 the name of the church was changed from Cressman Mennonite Church to Breslau Mennonite Church. Major renovations were made to the church in the same year. It is of interest to know that land amounting to approximately three acres was deeded to the congregation by Christian C. Snyder in three parcels, in 1837, 1859, and 1870.

Joseph Hagey, the first minister at Cressman's, was ordained on February 10, 1839. He was ordained bishop in 1851. Ministers who followed him in serving the church at Breslau were Jacob Woolner Sr., Elias Weber, Isaac A. Wambold, Jacob S. Woolner, and Oscar Burkholder. Services were held every four weeks from 1837-1867, and bi-weekly from 1867-1894 when weekly services were begun

Wanner Mennonite Church
Begun: 1829

A small wooden meeting house was built in 1829 on a corner of the farm belonging to Samuel Bechtel which was located in the vicinity of the present-day regional headquarters of the Ministry of Natural Resources near the intersection of Highways 24 and 401. The site for this community meeting house, as well as a school and a burial ground, had been chosen on August 8, 1829. The land was donated by Samuel Bechtel and his wife Barbara (Baumann) on March 15, 1830. A new meeting house, of white brick, was built in 1837 on the east side of Henry Wanner's farm, somewhat north of the first meeting house. Meetings at first were held every eight weeks. The deed of land for the meeting house known as Wanner's was dated October 15, 1837. Early preachers were David Sherk, who had been ordained by Benjamin Eby in July 1837, Jacob Bretz, Jr., and Joseph Hagey.
Joseph Hagey was ordained bishop in 1851. During his time divisions occurred in the church by a surge of enthusiasm for a Methodist form of revivalism. Solomon Eby of Port Elgin, who announced his own conversion in December 1869, was leader of a group which believed that members could be converted through participation in revival meetings. John Baer of Wanner's became associated with Solomon Eby, and was compelled to leave the church in the spring of 1874, as were Eby and his other followers. The new church movement resulted in organization conferences which culminated in the conference on March 23, 1875 at Bloomingdale where New Mennonites and Reforming (or Reformed) Mennonites joined together as United Mennonites. The United Mennonites favored revival meetings, Sunday Schools and prayer meetings, and were opposed to the use of alcohol and tobacco.
The date of construction of the meeting house which replaced the one built in 1837 is somewhat in doubt. It is possible that a new building was erected in the early 1870s; it is also possible that the 1837 building only underwent extensive renovations at that time. There is no doubt, however, that a new brown brick church was built in 1938. An education wing was added in 1969.
The earliest Mennonite Sunday School in North America was begun in 1842 and was held jointly by the Wanner and Hagey Meeting Houses. It was discontinued after a short time because of a division of opinion within the congregations. An attempt was made later, in the mid-1860s, to begin another Sunday School, but this, too, did not last long. Many years later, on June 10, 1896, a meeting was held to organize a Sunday School. Preston (Bechtel or Hagey) Mennonite Church

The second meeting house in Waterloo County was built, probably in 1814, by John Erb, a wealthy miller of Preston. This brick meeting house served as a community church and was located "near Jacob Hagey's", which was on the road running from the top of the Kress Hill west and "adjoining the Kitchener Highway" (Witmer 1967: 26). Another meeting house, known as the Union Meeting House, was built in the area around 1824. A meeting was held in the Union church on November 20, 1824 to commence recording the accounts of the congregation in Hagey's Deacon Book. The deed of land for the Union Meeting House and burial ground, which was for one acre of part Lot 22, Beasley's Broken Front, was transacted in 1835.
Hagey Meeting House was buiilt of red brick in 1842 on part Lot 23, just north of Preston on the west side of the Breslau Road, and slightly north of the Union Meeting House site. The deed, dated February 2, 1842, recorded the purchase of the land from John Hilborn and stressed that the property was to be for "the purpose of public worship by the Mennonist Society" (Witmer 1967: 28). Joseph Bechtel was the first minister in the area, from 1804-1837; he was followed by David Sherk (1838-1843). Next came Joseph Hagey (1844-1877), who was ordained bishop in 1851, and then Jacob B. Gingrich from 1878 to 1901. Services were held every four weeks until 1890 when bi-weekly services were begun. A Sunday School was established in 1842 with the congregation of Wanner Meeting House near Hespeler, but it was discontinued because of a difference of opinion regarding the need for Sunday Schools. On April 26, 1891 a Sunday School was organized at Hagey's, with deacon Abraham Oberholtzer as superintendent. Five years later, on June 10, 1896, a Sunday School was organized at the Wanner church.
Major changes were made to the church building in 1927-1928 when the basement was excavated, new windows were installed and the roof was raised two feet. Fire on January 15, 1950 caused extensive damage to the interior and furnishings of the church. The building was completely renovated and also enlarged at the same time; dedication was on July 2, 1950. Another fire, on Feburary 19, 1953, completely destroyed the church. A congregational decision was made to build a new church, on Concession Road in Preston, and the cornerstone was laid on Thanksgiving Day, October 12, 1953. Official dedication services in the new Preston Mennonite Church were held on May 16, 1954. The building was enlarged in the summer of 1989.<sup>5a

LARGE FUNERAL AT BRESLAU - On Tuesday of last week the funeral of the late Joseph Hagey, Bishop of the Mennonite Church at Breslau, took place, and was the largest ever held in that section, over three hundred teams being in the procession, and over one thousand people present, thereby testifying to the great respect entertained by all for the deceased. Mr. Hagey at the time of his death, must have been nearly eighty years old (ed. note actually 66), and for many years was recognized as the head of that body in Western Ontario. He was always distinguished for his Christian virtues, and was held in high esteem by the members of his own church and by all who knew him.<sup>6a

Death of Mr. Henry Hagey, of Preston - This worthy resident of Preston, one of its oldest and most honored citizens, died very suddenly on Wednesday afternoon last. Mr. Hagey has been afflicted with heart disease for some years, more a disease incidental to his age than acute, and with the care which he was enabled to take of himself, it was not thought his ailment would prove fatal. However, last Wednesday morning he appeared as well as usual, and went for a walk, returning in time for dinner. During the afternoon, his friend, Mr. Ambrose Winter paid him a visit and they had a pleasant conversation for some little time, Mr. Hagey seeming as well and cheerful as usual. Shortly after Mr. Maurice Hagey, hearing a noise, entered Mr. Hagey's room, when he was shocked to find his grandfather lying on the floor quite dead. Mr. Hagey was born in Preston, March 2nd, 1823, his whole life having been spent in or in the immediate vicinity of the village. He was by trade a blacksmith, and carried on business for some years in the shop now occupied by Kay Bros., at the east end of the village. He retired from that business and carried on farming until about ten years ago, when he again became a resident of his native village. Municipally he served his village as Reeve for several years. His family consisted of five children, viz.: - Mr. Isaac Hagey, of Preston; Mr. Jonas Hagey, of Davenport, Iowa; Mrs. M. Bricker, of Berlin; Mrs. Jacob Slichter, of Blenheim; and Mrs. W. Clemens, of Blair. The funeral on Saturday afternoon was very largely attended.

Sad Death - We very much regret to hear that Mrs. David Clemens, living near Roseville, committed suicide by hanging on Wednesday afternoon last. It appears that Mrs. Clemens for some short time has been slightly deranged, and her family had kept a close watch upon her for fear she might do herself some injury. On the afternoon mentioned she had been doing some little work in the garden, and went into the smokehouse which was contiguous. Her family did not notice her absence for a short time, but when they did, went at once in search of her, and on opening the smokehouse door were horrified to find her hanging in a leaning position with the loop of rope which was attached to a hook in the little building, underneath her chin, but not tied around her neck. When found she was leaning forward in the loop of the rope, with her feet on the ground. She was scarcely dead, but all efforts to restore her were fruitless. Dr. Philip held an inquest yesterday, Thursday. The relatives of the deceased are amongst our most worthy and esteemed citizens, and they have the sympathy of the entire community their great sorrow.

Kraft. - Margaret Hagey, widow of the late Moses Kraft, was born June 1, 1839, at Preston, Ont.; died Sept. 7, 1915 at Bridgeport, Ont.; aged 76 y. 3 m. 6 d. Their union was blessed with 8 children, 33 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Sister Kraft united with the Mennonite Church many years ago. She was of a quiet disposition, but through her exemplary life and testimony she has left a bright evidence of the faith she had in her Savior. Her body was laid to rest in the Cressman Cemetery. Services conducted by Jacob S. Woolner, Jr., in English, and Jonas Snider in German.

In another part of the book Rebecca is referred to as Magdalena, still the census refers to her as Margaret. Their cemetery stone as well. Her son was born registered his mother as Margaret, his marriage record as Rebecca. In the 1881 of Waterloo Township she is Rebecca M.

In the house of her father Jacob Hagey in the month previous to her birth a Margaretha Schwartz died at the age of 18. It is believed that Margaret Hagey was named in honour of her and that Margaretha was the unlisted sister of Leah Schwartz wife of Jacob Hagey and Margaret's mother.

Ernst.-Rebecca Hagey was born Feb. 19, 1842, departed this life Oct. 15, 1926; at the ripe age of 84 y. 7 m. 27 d. 64 years ago she was married to Jacob Ernst who predeceased her in October, 1904. To this union were born 5 children, of whom one, Mary Ann, has passed on to the great beyond. There remain to mourn a loving Christian mother, 2 sons, 3 daughters, 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Sister Ernst united with the Mennonite Church at the age of 17, and for 67 years she was a faithful member. As God gave her a long, useful life may He now grant her an eternal peace. Funeral services were held form the home of her son David, Preston, Ont., on Oct. 18, thence to the Shantz church, near Baden, Ont. where her body was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. Bros. U. K. Weber, Orphen Wismer, and Oscar Burkholder had charge of the services. Text, 1 Cor. 13: 13.

His disease was a kind of nervous consumption, with which he had been afflicted already in his seventh year, by which both his mental and physical powers were so weakened that he never came to accountability. He had much to suffer, however, and did not with the rich man have his good things in this life but the opposite. So that we believe and hope he was also carried by the angels, &c. HAGEY - Joseph B. Hagey was born Oct. 4, 1848; died Oct. 1, 1924, just three days before his 76th birthday. He was a son of Bishop Joseph Hagey, who served the Mennonite Church a generation ago, and he spent his entire life on the old homestead. On Sept. 11, 1877, he was married to Rebecca Snyder. To this union were born six children (Edith, Irvin, Elsie, Lora, Walter, and Samuel). Samuel died in infancy, Walter at the age of 5, and Elsie, wife of Dr. Sauder, in 1918. He left a sorrowing companion, one son, two daughters, two brothers, one sister and 11 grandchildren. The funeral was held on his 76th birthday from his late home to the Cressman Mennonite Church for services and adjoining cemetery for burial. Services conducted by Brethren Whitham and Oscar Burkholder. Text, Romans 14: 10.

DAVID H. CLEMENS

The death occurred early Sunday following a lengthy illness of David H. Clemens at his home, 251 Frederick street, in his 82nd year. Mr. Clemens, who retired some years ago, was born in Roseville, and was a member of Zion Evangelical Church.

Surviving are five sons and two daughters, Rev. Albert Clemens, Hamilton, James in Boston, Arthur of Los Angeles, Cal., Roy in Bolton, Mass., and David of Stowe, Mass., Miss Mabel Clemens, at home, and Mrs. L. L. Hackley of Indian Head, Sask. One son, Willard Ewart, and one daughter, Catharine, predeceased him. Three brothers, Rev. Moses Clemens, city, and Levi and Amos in Michigan also survive.

The funeral will be held privately at the home on Wednesday at 2 o'clock followed by public services at Zion Church at 2.30. The remains will be interred in Mount Hope Cemetery. Rev. G. F. Barthel will officiate.

FIRE VICTIM PASSED WAY

Isaac Clemens Died it Night As Result of Burns Received Tuesday

As the result of burns received in the gasoline explosion fire at the tannery of the Ora County Leather Co. on C street, yesterday af ternoon, Isaac Clemens died last night at 7 o'clock at thanta Ana Hospital, where he was taken immediately after he was []red. The man was burned from head to foot, and from the first there was little hope of his recovery.

Mr. Clemens came to county fourteen years ago. A few months ago he sold his ranch near Anaheim and moved here, where had started the tannery on land leased from the Merchants & Manufacturers' Association. He leaves a wife and a son, Harry Clemens, of Santa Ana, and a daughter, Mrs. Ref[] Woodington of Smeltzer.

The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock from the residence at 505 East Fifth street.

SEVERELY BURNED IN FIRE THAT DESTROYS TANNERY
Proprietor of Place Knocked Down and Rendered Unconscious by Explosion

SANTA ANA, April 27.-Isaac Clemens was severely burned this afternoon in a fire that destroyed the tannery building recently erected on C street by Isaac Clemens & Co. The fire is believed to have been caused by the explosion of some chemical used in the tanning business. Clemens was knocked down and rendered partially unconscious, and while in that condition was burned about the head, face and arms. He was taken to the Santa Ana hospital and his condition is tonight considered critical. The property loss is estimated to be $500.

TANNER DIES.

Isaac Clemens, who was terribly burned in an explosion and fire at the Orange County Leather Company tannery Tuesday afternoon, died at the Santa Ana Hospital last last night as the result of his injuries. Clemens struck a match to light a cigar, and the gasoline tank exploded. Clemens leaves a widow, a son Harry of Santa Ana, and daughter, Mrs. Retta Woodington, of Smeltzer.

Rev. Moses H. Clemens, a retired minister who was with the Canada Conference of the Evangical Church for over 20 years and ws a college professor at Huntington, Ind., died at his home, 390 Frederick Street, Saturday night following a brief illness. He was 78 years old. He was born at Roseville, Ontario, a son of the late David M. Clemens and the late Sarah Hagey. He married the former Fidella Wismer who died in 1923. Survivng are two sons, V. Leslie Clemens of Kitchener and Herbert Clemens of New York City and one daughter, Mrs. Fred Brown of Toronto. Two brothers, Levi and Amos of Petosky, Michigan and two grandchildren also survive. The remains will be at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral home until Wednesday at 2: 00p.m. when the funeral service will be held with Dr. C. A. Hirshman, assisted by Rev. Albert Clemens of Sebringville, Ontario, officiating. Interment will be in the Woodland Cemetery^.

WENGER. - Angeline, daughter of John Hagey, Preston, Ont., was born June 2, 1860; passed away after a lengthy illness at Calgary, Alta., Oct. 25, 1945; aged 85 y. 4 m. 23 d. On Sept. 20, 1880, she was united in marriage to Daniel Wenger. In 1900 they moved with their family to Okotoks, Alta., and in 1921 to Calgary. In 1930 they moved to a farm near Langdon, at which place Bro. Wenger passed away Dec. 6, 1942. They were charter members of the Mt. View congregation, which was organized in 1902 by S. F Coffman acting under the instructions of the Ontario Conference. Their faithful and willing services were very much appreciated in the early days of the congregation, and their testimonies in their declining years were sources of inspiration to all who visited them. Surviving are 3 daughters and one son (Adeline, Margaret, Lillie ? Mrs. Ed Downey, and Edward, all of Alberta), 4 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Jacques Funeral Home, Calgary, on Oct. 29, conducted by Isaac Miller. Text, II Tim. 4: 6. A further service was held at the Mt. View Church near Mazeppa by C. J. Ramer, assisted by H. R. Boettger. Text, Ps. 89: 48. Burial was made in the adjoining cemetery.

Run Over By Street Car

Berlin, Ont., March 28 - After having crossed the Preston & Berlin Street Railway bridge at Freeport a young woman was knocked down and fatally injured by a P. & B. car leaving this city at 10.05 last night. The crew stopped the car, and the injured girl was conveyed to the home of Herman Hertel, jun., where she succumbed an hour later without regaining consciousness. Dr. A. Ochs, Preston, was attending the victim when death took place. It was not until this afternoon that the remains were recognized as those of Miss Loretta Shantz, the daughter of Daniel Shantz, a farmer on the Preston road, near Berlin. She had been engaged as a domestic at the farm of Lincoln Hagey, a farmer on the Breslau and Preston road, and had left Berlin in the evening. After doing some shopping she had walked to within a few yards of the road leading to her home when run over by the car. Deceased was twenty-two years of age.

Campbell - In Blenheim Township, on Wednesday, May 7th, 1919, at 6.30 a.m., Allie Hagey, beloved wife of James Campbell, in her 54th year. The deceased lady had been indisposed for some time, but had not been considered seriously ill until about a week before her death, when erysipilas set in and it was found impossible to stay the raves of the disease. Mrs. Campbell was born at Preston, but after her marriage spent the remainder of her life in the community in which she died, and was widely known as an exemplary woman and a good neighbor. In spiritual life she connected herself with the Presbyterian faith, attending Divine worship at Drumbo and assisting as opportunity presented itself in the various activities of the Church auxiliaries. Besides her husband, a son and daughter (Roy and Beatrice) survive. A brother and sister: Norman Hagey of Dakota and Mrs. Wm. Clemens of Galt, also mourn her departure. The funeral took place from her late residence, lot 9, con. 10, Blenheim, on Friday, when interment was made in the Ayr cemetery, being the first strictly motor funeral in this section. The services were conducted by deceased's pastor, Rev. Mr. Sh? of Drumbo, the pallbearers being Messrs. John H. Lillico, Charles Laing, Herbert Schlichter, John Stauffer, John Pipe and Thomas Beattie.

Kraft, of Bridgeport, Knocked Down By a Runaway Team and Dies From His injuries.

A serious accident took place on the farm of Mr. Moses Kraft, a mile north of Bridgeport Tuesday morning and as a result Mr. Solomon Krafft lies at his home, in a very critical condition. He was returning home from Waterloo, with a load of salt and gasolene and after allowing the horses to pass through the gate, it is thought he was about to close it when the horses wheeled round and tried to run away. In attempting to stop the horses, Mr. Krafft was knocked down, striking his head against a stone with great force, cutting it severely and causing a concussion of the brain. He was picked up in an unconscious condition and had not regained consciousness at a late hour. His condition is reported by Dr. Honsberger, who was called in as being critical and slight hopes are held out for his recovery.

LATER

Since writing the above we learn the unfortunate man succumbed to his injuries at 7 o'clock Tuesday evening, never regaining consciousness and living but ten hours after the accident. Regarding the circumstances of the accident, it now appears that Mr. Krafft had driven up to the stable and was in the act of putting away the horse blankets when the team turned around and made a dash towards the gate, knocking down Krafft who had overtaken them and demolishing the gate: The funeral will be held on Friday morning at 9 o[clock from the home of his father Mr. Moses Krafft, to the Breslau Cemetery. Deceased was thirty four years of age and a consistent member of the Bridgeport Evangelical Church. He was a brother of Chas. Krafft, butcher of Berlin.

MRS. ELMINA SNYDER

Mrs. Elmina Snyder, 78, of Kitchener, died Sunday, November 24, at the Coutts Pavilion, Freeport, following a long illness.

Born in Waterloo Township August 20, 1870, she was the last surviving member of the Moses Kraft family. She was a member of Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church.

Her husband, Leander, died May 16, 1924.

Surviving are four sons, Harold of Waterdown, and Arthur, Stuart and Gordon, all of Kitchener; three daughters, Mrs. Irvin (Laurene) Shantz of Baden, Mrs. Stanley (Nora) Weber of Rosebank and Mrs. Delton (Eva) Shantz of Elmira.

Also surviving are 24 grand children and 18 great-grand children.

The body rested at the Ratz Bechtel Funeral Home until noon Wednesday when removal was made to Stirling Avenue Church for services at 3 p.m. Rev. Wilfred Ulrich of ficiated and burial was in First Mennonite Cemetery.

Mr. Hagey was born in Preston and had lived in Hamilton for the last 50 years. he was a faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church. he was in the retail grocery business for many years and had travelled for the W. H. Gillard Company for 35 years. He is survived by his wife, the former Laura Bartman; one son J. G. Hagey, of Waterloo; one daughter, Mrs. R. W. Bartman, of Fairmont Hot Springs, B.C.; two brothers, John Hagey, of Brantford, and Henry Hagey, of Brantford; and three sisters, Mrs. Joe Hilborn, Mrs. Roy Osgood and Mrs. John Ross, all of Preston, Ontario. Remains are resting at Blachford & Wray's funeral home until Wednesday morning at 11 o-clock for service in Trinity Lutheran Church on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in Hamilton Cemetery.

John Hagey, well known Brantford resident, died Monday at his home, 51 Palmerston Avenue, in his 89th year. He was born in Bruce County, the third son of the late Peter Hagey and Elizabeth Boehmer...Mr. Hagey, at an early age, became interested in the grocery business. Coming to Brantford in 1888, he took over Hall's Grocery at the foot of Terrace Hill Street. He later became connected with the firm of W. H. Gillard Wholesale Grocery firm of Hamilton for 35 years and afterward was with the Canada Starch Company until his retirement in 1936. He was a member of Brant Ave United Church for more than 50 years and until recently was a member of the official board of the church. He was a member of Lynden Lodge, IOOF, and was the last original member. In 1937, he received his 50 year jewel. An enthusiastic bowler, he was a charter member of the Dufferin Lawn Bowling Club.

A very sad death occurred at the Brantford general hospital yesterday, when at the age of 39 years, Peter Hagey, who is well known to a large circle of friends in this city passed away after a brief illness. Mr. Hagey who is best known through his associations as manager of the Bon Marche grocery store on Colborne street, was for 12 years a travelling salesman for the Geo. Watt wholesale groceries, and prior to that was employed by A. L. Vanstone, the grocer. The deceased leaves a wife and two children, Frances and Edna; his mother in Preston; four brothers, Menno, of Hamilton; Ephraim of Oregon; John and Harry, in Brantford; and five sisters, Mrs. A.T. Hanes, Hamilton; Mrs. Joseph Hilborn, Blair; Mrs. R. B. Osgood, Preston; Mrs. John Ross, Preston, and Miss Mary Hagey, Guelph. The funeral will take place to-morrow (Tuesday) afternoon, from his late residence, 216 Brant Avenue to Greenwood.

PRESTON, Mrs. Roy E. Osgood, 85, of 1608 Concession Rd., Preston, died Saturday at Coutts Pavilion, Kitchener. Mrs. Osgood was the former Jean Hagey and was born at Port Elgin. She had been a resident of Preston for 75 years and was a member of St. Paul's United Church, the Golden Rule Bible Class, Preston Women's Institute, the Red Cross and former member of Preston Lawn Bowling Club. She was an active bowler while in Florida. She was prededeased by her husband. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Frank (Gladys) Morlock and Mrs. Preston (Mable) Graham, both of Preston; one brother, Henry of Brantford; two sisters, Mrs. Sophia Hilborn and Mrs. Catherine Ross both of Preston, and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The body is at the Stager-Barthel Funeral Home, where the funeral will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Preston Park Lawn, Cemetery. Rev. A. I. Waters of St. Paul's United Church will officiate.

Mr. Wiles was born at Kossuth but had been a resident of Preston most of his life. He had been employed for many years as a cabinet maker at Canadian Office and School Furniture Limited. He retired 20 years ago. He was a former member of Knox Presbyterian Church and a life member of the Legion. In the First World War he was a sergeant-major with the 48^th highlanders overseas. He as predeceased by his wife, the former Lillian Ruthig, in 1950. Aaron B. Hagey

Following a paralytic stroke which he suffered last Tuesday when visiting his daughter in Kitchener. While on his way home, he was found unconscious and removed to the hospital where he was identified. Little hope was held out for his recovery. The late Mr. Hagey was born near Washington, Ontario. He resided in Innerkip and near Breslau, and later moved to Blair, where he has resided for the past 17 years. Widely known throughout the province and especially in Waterloo and Oxford Counties where he made many friends, he was of a very congenial disposition, and always took an active interest in the furtherance of community enterprise. Mr. Hagey was known as a farmer of real ability at which his lifetime was spent. He was a keen follower of sport. Besides being a director of the Waterloo Township Plowmen's Association, Mr. Hagey was an ex-trustee of the Blair cemetery board and of the Blair Union Sunday school. He was instrumental in assuring the Blair cemetery a perpetual upkeep fund and was largely responsible for the success of the drive for funds. He was poetically inclined and several poems of widespread interest were written by the deceased. In politics he was a staunch Conservative. Although he was an adherent of the United Church, he attended the Preston Gospel Tabernacle
