Notes:
One of the oldest and most respected Citizens of Elmira, died at his home here, last Friday morning, viz. Mr. Peter Jansen, who was well known throughout this district. The following description of his career is copied from the Elmira Advertiser, whose editor is a son-in-law of the deceased.
Deceased was born in Prussia in 1840 and came to this country with his parents when seven years old. In his younger days he worked among the farmers in the neighborhood of Hespeler then learned the trade of waggonmaker in Preston, coming to Elmira in the year 1863. Here he started making the woodwork of plows in H. Dunke's shop (now J. B. Lein-s.) Later he built a shop of his own and later the house in which he died.
He was married in 1864 to Catherine Klinck, and to whom were born six children. One, son, Albert, died about a year ago, and the other children are all living. They are: Caroline (Mrs. C. W. Schierholtz) Elmira, Arnold, Berlin; Carl, Tilsonburg, Henry of Buffalo, and Louisa at home. Deceased took a great interest in school matters and was for a number of years a member of the Elmira Public school board He aimed at giving his children a good education, not having himself had the best of opportunities in his younger days
In politics, Mr. Jansen was a staunch but not bigoted. Liberal; in religion he was a consistent member of St. Paul's Lutheran congregation. In his business dealings with his fellow men he tried to give every man his due, not seeking to gain any undue advantage. To the family he was a kind and provident father whose absence from the fireside will be deeply mourned.
The cause of his death was dilation of the heart, for which he was receiving doctor's treatment for the last seven weeks, though the trouble had probably been coming on gradually for a much longer time.
Deceased was laid to his last resting place in Elmira Union Cemetery on Monday afternoon the funeral being largely attended by relatives, friends and acquaintances from near and far.

The late Mr. Jansen had been ailing for about five months, though for two weeks his condition has been serious. The late Mr. Jansen was born in what is now called Limerick, on the outskirts of this town. For 33 years he was an employee of Clare Brothers and Company, Limited, following his trade as a moulder. It was 88 [sic] years ago on November 28 that Mr. and Mrs. Jansen were united in matrimony in the old Catholic church at Guelph and Duke streets. He has been a faithful attendant at St. Clement's church throughout his years being also a member of the Holy Name Society. As one of the earlier residents of the town, Mr. Jansen was the first citizen to build a home on the southwest side of Waterloo street, besides his wife there survives one daughter, Mrs. Henry Kramer of Preston and one son, August of Kitchener, two children predeceased him years ago. Notes:
Died at Ottawa
It becomes our sad duty to chronicle in this issue, the death of Albert Jansen, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Jansen, who died at Ottawa on Tuesday, a victim to typhoid fever. Though the attack was severe from the beginning, favorable reports came during the latter part of last week. But on Monday a telegram was received by his parents to the effect that he was worse and that the disease had reached a crisis. Then followed a time of anxious waiting on the part of the family here, with little hope of any better news than came on Tuesday forenoon announcing his death. Deceased was cut off in the very prime of life. He had just a few weeks ago removed from Carleton Place to Ottawa, where he had got a good situation as hardware clerk, and was looking hopefully into the future. He and his employer seem to have been on particularly good terms with each other, as the latter gave him the testimony of being a good boy, "a fine man," and continued his wages while he was sick in the hospital. Deceased was a young man of many good qualities, honest and kind-hearted, and made many friends wherever he went, made such friends as did not draw him away from the Best Friend, whom he loved and served. The earthly remains of the deceased will be brought to Elmira where they will be laid to rest in the Union Cemetery. The funeral will take place from his parents' home on Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The bereaved family, consisting of his parents, three brothers and two sisters, have the sympathy of a wide circle of relatives and friends in their sad bereavement.

Young Elmira Man dies at Ottawa - The sad intelligence reached Elmira by telegraph, last Tuesday forenoon, that Albert Jansen, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Jansen, of Elmira had departed this life, a victim to typhoid fever. About a week ago, word was received by his relatives that he was seriously ill at the hospital at Ottawa. His brother, Arnold, of Berlin, hastened to his bedside without delay and found that his case was very serious indeed. Encouraging messages were sent home to the anxious ones while there was hope for his recovery, but as the disease reached the crisis, it appeared that the chances for recovery were very slim. Following a message to that effect on Monday came one on Tuesday announcing his death. Deceased had been away from home almost continually after his school years. He had chosen the hardware trade and acted as clerk in Berlin several years. Then he went to Carlton Place where he stayed several years. Only recently he removed to Ottawa where he had secured a good situation and where he was well thought of by his employees who showed his regard in many ways during the illness. Deceased led a Christian life and gained the respect and good will of those with whom he came in contact. He visited his parents and friends here periodically and will be greatly missed by them. He leaves behind father and mother, three brothers and two sisters, who have the sympathy of a large circle of friends in this community. He had reached the age of 27 years, 7 months and 26 days. The funeral will take place from the residence of his parents on Thursday at 2 o'clock p.m.

Wilhelmine Kropf
Our friend Billie Kropf passed away in S. Mary's Hospital on Tuesday November 28, after a lengthy period of failing health. She and Del had been members of long standing and their faithfulness and devotion to each other and to their church will be a treasured memory for us all. Billie served in various offices in the Women's Association in the past and even as her energy waned, was to be found in her place along will Del at Sunday Worship and the Midweek Meeting at Highland. Her quiet witness and presence will be missed. The sympathy of Highland membership is extended to Del, and their family, Richard and Barbara. We pray they will be comforted by many happy memories of a devoted wife and mother.
