"Sister Tillman was born November 28^th, 1848 in St. Agatha, Ontario. Little is known of her early years, however, when she had grown to womanhood, similar to our Venerable Mother Teresa, Sister Tillman and five other young ladies, with the permission and direction of their saintly pastor, resolved to live a community life.
On one occasion our revered Mother Caroline was on visitation to St. Agatha to open a mission. The pastor of this mission begged Mother Caroline to accept these six young ladies as postulants. On August 18^th, 1871, our future Sister received her bonnet, and remained in St. Agatha for six months. Going to Milwaukee on Valentine's Day 1872. On May 4^th, 1873, our happy postulant received the Wreath of Roses and Lilies, and on August 29^th, 1875, Novice Mary Tillman became the thorn-crowned bride of her Divine Spouse. The feast of Our Lady's Assumption (August 15^th), 1885, was the day of her final immolation. After temporary vows, Sister was missioned to St. Boniface, Rochester, for one year. From there to St. Joseph's Asylum for another year, hence to Tacony, Philadelphia, where she labored for the little ones of Christ for twelve years.
During the next fifteen years, our dear Sister Tillman told her rosary of kind deeds in the Infirmary at Govanstown, Maryland.
Once more St. Joseph's Asylum, Rochester, became the scene of her labors. And after twelve years, she was transferred to Fourth St, New York City. She remained for seven years until her health necessitated her removal to the Mother House in 1922. Here for another decade of years, our good Sister cheerfully and willingly helped with the bed linen and in the convent sewing department.
Only this past year, the toil-worn fingers of Charitable Sister Tillman buttonholed the necks of four hundred wimples. Surely the generous Heart of Christ, in reward for her charity, day by day, mantled the soul of our beloved Sister with the richest of graces of His Sacred Heart, so that the end of life's day, she would receive His eternal blessing.
Sister Tillman contracted pneumonia; she was fortified by the Last Rites of Holy Mother Church, and was consoled, to the very end, by the oft-repeated blessing and absolution of the Revered Chaplain, and by the untiring prayerful vigil of the Reverend Mother Provincial.
At one o'clock in the afternoon of April 26^th, 1933, our Lady of Good Council, herself, guided the last earthly footsteps of Our Venerable Jubilarian, unto the eternal way of life everlasting."

" 'Whatever you have done to the least of my brethren, you have done to me.' This consoling assurance of our divine Lord must have been the vital force of the religious life of our dear Sister Mary Eugenia Schmitt.
Mary Eugenia Schmitt, a life embodying years of toil, of self-sacrificing fidelity, thirty-eight years of them being spent in our asylum in Pittsburgh, in New York, and in Tacony. Successfully, Sister Eugenia was born in St. Agatha, Can. April 21^st, 1858. The chief aim of the good Christian parents was to raise their children of God, and so they rejoiced in the later years to consecrate two daughters to His service as Sisters of Notre Dame. Sister Eugenia followed the example of their older sister, our Dear Sister Mary Tillman, and entered into Rochester, St. Joseph's on the feast of our Lady's Presentation, 1877. Teresa's longing for the Holy Habit was happily realized on the feast of her patronal saint, 1878.

On August 18, 1881, Sister Mary Eugenia pronounced her Holy Vows at the Notre Dame of Maryland, and eleven years later she sealed the sacred contract for life. After this very memorable day, sister returned with renewed courage and zeal to her sweet labor of love for God's favorites, the orphans entrusted to care.

She was a firm open character, a good religious, very true to duty, trustworthy in the smallest details of her work. Tact and order seemed to be her second nature. With maternal solicitude, Sister attended to the clothing of the boys. If indisposition or illness overtook one or the other, she cared for them with loving sympathy. The children in turn, loved and revered their good mother; her mere presence upheld her authority. Frequently young men who had been in Sister's charge in their childhood days, would visit her and express their gratitude for the good principles which she had instilled in their young hearts. Not withstanding the manifold and exacting duties which devolved upon Sister. She was always willing to help with other work when necessary.

On February 22, she was at duty's post as usual - not thinking that her earthly task was done. That night she was seized with severe pain which the ordinary remedies did not relieve. Next morning the doctor diagnosed 'a severe cold'. On the following day her condition grew worse. The consulting physician feared the worst, but promised to do all in his power to save the precious life. When it became evident that no human skill could stay the hand of death, our dear sufferer received the last sacraments on February 25^th, very devoutly and resigned to God's Holy Will. The Reverend Chaplain gave sister Holy Communion daily and visited her frequently. Friday evening he prayed with her a long time, and time had that Sister could not receive one more on account of her cough. Shortly before midnight Sister Superior renewed the Holy Vows with her. With a firm hand the dying Sister blessed herself and repeated every word of the formula in a whisper. Then she kissed the Holy Rule Book so fervently that all present were deeply impressed. Nothing seemed to worry her mind. No fear of death was evident, no struggle, when the departing soul of our Dear Sister responded to the final summons of The Divine Friend of our Children, to meet him face to face as her judge.

The large attendance at the funeral and the many stipends for Holy Masses testified to the grateful love which Sister Eugenia had won for her self-sacrificing life for the orphans at St. Vincent's Asylum. Tacony, Philadelphia. She died 1920."

WELLESLEY. - Nicholas Buchheit, 66, of New Prussia, Wilmot township, died at his home after an illness of three years. Deceased, a farmer, was born in Wilmot township in May, 1873. He was a member of St. Agatha R.V. church. Surviving are his widow, one son, George, at home, two daughters, Mrs. Eugene Schnarr of Kitchener and Mrs. Cyril Heller of Preston, four sisters, Miss Olive of St. Agatha, Mrs. William Haffner of St. Clements, Mrs. Simon Huber of Bamber, and Mrs. William Meyers, Mishawaha, Ind. Funeral services were held Tuesday morning.

Doering's Corner - The sympathy of the public goes out to Mr. Buchheit and family in the death of his son George last week.

DEATH OF GEO. BUCHHEIT. The death of this estimable young man occured [sic] at the home of his father, Mr. Buchheit, New Prussia, last. Monday. Deceased had been working at his trade as a tailor at Mishawaka, Ind., until a couple of months ago when he was compelled to quit by a lung trouble. Since then he has been gradually growing worse until the end came. The funeral occurred at St. Agatha yesterday forenoon a very large number of friends of the family attending. Rev. Fr. Aymons, who conducted the services, preached an affecting and powerful sermon on the occasion.

Miss Olive C. Schmidt, 79 of Mt. Angel died Friday, April 5, at a Silverton hospital. She was born in Canada and had lived in Mt. Angel since 1926. She had been a seamstress for many years.

Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Catherine Reding of Woodburn, Mrs. Isabelle Wunderlich of British Columbia and Sister Marion Schmidt of Saskatchewan.

The rosary was recited Monday evening, April 8, at the St. Mary's Catholic church in Mt. Angel and mass was on Tuesday, April 9, at the church. Interment was in the Calvary cemetery. Unge mortuary had charge of arrangement.

Predeceased by one daughter, Joan and one brother, George. Mrs. Haller was born in Wellesley and had been a lifelong resident of Cambridge. She was a member of St. Clement's RC Church and the CWL of St. Clements and also a longterm volunteer with S.C.U.P.O. Friends will be received at the Barthel Funeral Home, 566 Queenston Rd., Cambridge, today (Tuesday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass will be held at St. Clement's RC Church, 745 Duke St., Cambridge, on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1993, at 10 a.m., with Father L.P. HAFFNER, Milton George -- On Thursday, September 1, 1977, at K-W Hospital, Milton George Haffner, of 351 Huron St., New Hamburg, age 76 years, after a lengthy illness. Mr. Haffner was owner of Haffner Motors in New Hamburg for the past 45 years and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, fourth degree; board of trade and the Holy Name Society. He was a member of Holy Family Church, New Hamburg. He is survived by his wife, the former Luella Montag; one son, Ronald, of New Hamburg, three daughters, Mrs. Karl (Mildred) Binkley of Kitchener, Mrs. Joseph (Shirley) Weber and Mrs. Howard (Margery) Brown, both of New Hamburg. He is also survived by one brother, Clarence Haffner and one sister, Mrs. Frank (Irene) Gies, both of Waterloo; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Magdalena Haffner; two brothers George and Edgar Haffner. Edgar Haffner

Edgar Simon Haffner, brother of Milton of New Hamburg, died last Thursday at St. Mary's Hospital at the age of 53.

A former resident of 230 Lincoln Road, Waterloo, Mr. Haffner had lived at Lake Rosiland, Hanover for the past eight months.

Born Aug. 3, 1915, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs William Haffner. He was an automotive parts salesman with Kitchener United Auto Parts Ltd.

The deceased was married to Olive Dietrich May 24, 1939, in Waterloo. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, Waterloo.

Surviving besides his wife and brother are two sons, Neil and Russell, both of Waterloo; another brother, Clarence of Waterloo; one sister, Mrs. Irene Gies of Waterloo and three grandchildren.

He was predeceased by one brother, George, in 1967.

Parish rosary was recited at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home on Friday with prayers recited Saturday morning.

Requiem mass was held at St. Louis Roman Catholic Church. Burial took place in Parkview cemetery. Waterloo.
