    Notes:

Charles E. Tuerk, a member of the Blakely Marsh Printing Company, was born at Elberfeld, West Prussia, Germany, on December 3, 1847. In 1850, his parents came to America, and settled at Pittsburgh, where the family lived for 4 years, his father being a Lutheran minister. In 1854, the family moved to Berlin, Ont., where his father became a convert to the Swedenborgian faith, which he has since preached. Up to fourteen years of age, Mr. Tuerk had attended the schools of Canada, except the last year, when he attended a German school. At fourteen he was served an apprenticeship at the mercantile business for 3 years. At twenty he had a management of a store for one year when he went to Boston and attended a Latin school, and in 1871 came to Chicago. He and his brother, Fred W. Tuerk, in connection with Hon. J. Young Scammon, who furnished the capital, established the first vegetable-ivory button factory in Illinois at Kankakee, from which have sprung several button factories throughout the State. The ivory comes from Venezuela, South America; their first shipment was 52 tons. He clerked for an insurance office in this city until 1873, when he was largely instrumental in establishing a publication called the Field and Stream, now known as the American Field which has grown under the able management of the present owner, Dr. Rowe, to be the largest and most successful paper of its kind in America. Mr. Tuerk was half owner of the above paper for six months, when he sold out to other parties, and Hon. C. W. Marsh purchased the interests of said paper and sunk $30,000 in its establishment. Mr. Tuerk returned to the insurance business; but a few months after Mr. Marsh bought an interest in the printing firm of Blakely E. Brown, the firm name becoming Blakely, Brown & Marsh; and placed Mr. Tuerk in the firm to look after his interests. In Sept. 1881, the latter bought the Brown interest, and since the incorporation of the company has been its secretary. He was married on March 8, 1875 to Letta Reutel of this city. They have 2 children \endash Emil Ferdinand and Irma Louisa

Albert Tuerk of Chicago is a Berlin boy who has made name and place for himself as an inventor and manufacturer in Uncle Sam's domain. He is a son of the late Rev. F. W. Tuerk, and was born in Pittsburg, Pa., Oct. 14th, 1851. His parents removed to Berlin in 1857 and the subject of this sketch, spent fourteen years of his youth in Berlin. In 1888, he was given the management of the Western Clock Mfg. Co., a concern which makes 3000 clocks a day and there demonstrated his ability to do things. In 1903, it was incorporated as the Tuerk Manufacturing Co., of which he President and Treasurer and Mr. Paul Totzke, another Berlin boy, Secretary. Mr. Tuerk resides at Edgewater, Chicago and is a striking example of what Berlin boys have accomplished in the big field to the south of us.

    Description: Patent Data

Albert Tuerk and Adolph G. Tuerk, of Chicago, Illinois, gas-stove, patent #303343; issued August 12, 1884; filed September 14, 1883; no date filled in on application. Signed Albert Tuerk and Adolph G. Tuerk. (The signature on the drawing is identical to that of Gustavus A. Tuerk; Charles E. Gaylord appears on both as a witness, and the law firm is the same as the following patent, 348504.)

Gustavus A. Tuerk, Chicago, Illinois, water-motor, patent #348504; issued August 31, 1886; filed March 5, 1886; no date filled in on application. I believe this patent was the basis for a Supreme Court of New York State trademark lawsuit that was not tried until December 26, 1895 entitled Tuerk Motor Power Company (of Chicago, Illinois) vs. Tuerk, et al. (consisting of Frederick W. Tuerk, (brother of Gustavus), John Hunter and James C. Hunter. According to the suit, "in the Spring of 1886, Frederick W. Tuerk severed his connection with the plaintiff (the Tuerk Motor Power Company) and entered into a partnership with the defendants under the style of the Tuerk Water-Meter Company and that the partnership had its place of business at Syracuse, N.Y." It was further claimed that Frederick W. Tuerk had been an employee of the company. The plaintiff in 1895 of the Tuerk Hydraulic Motor Company (formerly Tuerk Motor Power Company) was not Frederick W. Tuerk. The only one of this family to patent a water-motor patent besides Frederick W. was Gustavus A.

Indeed, Frederick W. Tuerk located in Syracuse, New York by May 20, 1886 at which time he assigned two-thirds of his patent rights to the Hunters for a rotary water-meter, patent #362047 in which he references his Chicago patent 328544 dated October 20, 1885. By January 31, 1887, the Tuerk Water Meter Company of Syracuse, had been formed. James C. Hunter came to Syracuse, New York from Sterling Valley, New York and was present when a patent application was signed on January 8, 1887 for yet another two-thirds to the Hunters by Frederick W. Tuerk, Jr. for a water motor (400610).

To get back to the 1895 lawsuit, it was contended by the plaintiff (the Tuerk Hydraulic Motor Company; formerly the Tuerk Water Motor Company of Chicago) that the Frederick W. Tuerk and Hunter partnership was organized "for manufacturing a water meter, no meters were were actually made or sold; and that some time prior to December 1886, a motor similar in general appearance to that of the plaintiff " was produced. After investigation, it was found that the Tuerk Water Meter Company had manufactured a water motor called "Tuerk's New Water Motor," and it was designed by "Tuerk Motor, Syracuse, N.Y." Basically, Frederick W. Tuerk and the Hunters were found guilty of trademark infringement and could no longer use the name "Tuerk Water-Meter Company" (The New York Supplement containing the decisions of the Supreme and Lower Courts of Record of New York State, St. Paul: West Publishing Co., 1896, Vol. 36, pp. 384-386). In late 1889, Frederick W. Tuerk and his brother, Samuel O., moved from Syracuse to Fulton where they were still associated with the Hunters under the name Tuerk Water Meter Company. After the 1895 lawsuit, the Hunters bought up the remaining interest from Frederick W. Tuerk and the Hunter Fan and Motor Company was created in 1896 (see also patents of Frederick W.).

    Notes:

Tuerk\emdash Died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. George Denniston, April 8th, Samuel O. Tuerk, aged 57 years. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Emma Denniston, and one son, Fred S. Tuerk of Cleveland, Ohio. Private funeral services were held at his late home Monday; interment in Mt. Adnah. The news of the death of Mr. Tuerk on Saturday, while not unexpected, caused a general expression of regret throughout the city, where he was so well known and held in the highest regard by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. For the past 27 years the deceased made his home in this city, and it is safe to say that he has never made an enemy, but on the other hand, friends innumerable Mr. Tuerk was the inventor of the Tuerk fan and motor and for many years was the real head and sole designer of the many patterns of this great invention, manufactured in such large numbers here by the Hunter Fan and Motor Company and shipped to every part of the civilized world. A few years ago failing health compelled him to relinquish his personal supervision of the plant, but he retained his interest and was chief advisor to the company at the time of his demise. Socially there were few men who had the hold upon their fellowmen that Mr. Tuerk possessed. His integrity, amiable disposition and liberality was the secret of his making friends and retaining them through life. He will be greatly missed by his numerous friends, who extend their heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved son and daughter.
