Oldest Heirloom In County a Five Octave Piano

One of the oldest heirlooms in Waterloo County comes to light with the finding of the manuscript written for the 1934 "Grumbler", the Kitchener-Waterloo Collegiate student magazine, which was handed in for publication and not published due to its misplacement until after the magazine had been printed. The manuscript was the story of the heirloom, at present the property of Mrs. Vorwerk Ernst of Kitchener, the heirloom previously being brought to Canada by Mrs. Ernst's great-grandmother, Mrs. J. H. Oelschlaeger. The story was written by Mrs. Ernst's son for publication in the "Grumbler".

The heirloom is a spinnet, an old- fashioned five-octave piano, which was presented to Wilhelmine Von Doerhen Schunk in 1814 on the occasion of her tenth birthday by her parents, Rev. Mr. Schunk and Mrs. Schunk, of Hamburg, Germany. Miss Schunk was married and came out to Canada in 1854, a year after her husband came. The spinnet she brought with her. It was carried by horse and wagon from Hamilton to Freeport where the driver of the horses said his horses must rest before pulling it further. The next day it was brought on to Lancaster, new Bridgeport, where Mrs. Oelschlaeger took up her new home and its life of pioneering.

    Notes:

THE FUNERAL OF THE LATE WM. OELSCHLAGER

    A very large Cortege

This afternoon (Saturday) the remains of the late Town Treasurer and Manager of the Economical Insurance Co. were laid to rest in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Long before the hour appointed for the funeral a host of his old friends, comrades and acquaintances congregated at the family residence on Young street to have a last look at the familiar countenance of their departed friend and to accompany his remains to their final restingplace.

The casket containing the body was deeply draped and bore a silver plate, giving his name and age. On it lay his Masonic apron and pendent and surrounding it were a number of beautiful floral wreaths, - one from the Economical's London Agents, representing the "Gates Ajar" the Town Council sent a very tasty wreath bearing the words "Our Treasurer,"; the Company with which he was so long and favorably connected sent a flower pillow with the inscription. "Our Friend" another simple yet touching one was from his family and bore the words: "Father." Several Berlin ladies among them Mrs. Geo. Rumpel and Mrs. H. Kranz also sent in similar tokens fo sympathy, showing the high esteem in which the deceased was held by all classes in the community.

His Brother Masons of Berlin and adjacent towns and cities attended in a body to confer upon him the last honors of the Craft. After the Rev. R. Von Pirch had read the impresseive funeral service of the Lutheran Church, the Masonic body took the funeral in charge. When they read their burial service over him, the coffin was placed in the bier and the cortege proceeded to the cemetery in the following order:

The Band of the 29th Battalion.
Grand River Lodge No. 151, A. F. and A. M. and visiting Brethren.
The Bier and Six Masonic Pall-Bearers.
The Town Council, in a body.
The Free Library Board, in a body.
    The Berlin Fire Brigade.
    The Family and Nearest Relatives.
The Officers, Directors and Agents of the Economical Insurance Co.
Public and County Officials and Citizens.
    Carriages and Pedestians.

The funeral procession was one of the largest seen in Berlin for some time. The band, specially engaged by the members of the Grand River Lodge, A. F. and A. M., playing "The Dead March in Saul" as the vast throng moved slowly toward the cemetery and the bells on St. Peters tolling dolefully made the scene a most memorable one. Arrived at the grave the remains were deposited into the earth by his Brethern after the solemn and mystic usages of the Craft and as the words "dust to dust and ashes to ashes" were spoken they dropped a sprig of evergreen upon the box containing all that was mortal of William Oelschlager. Thus was an honorable man honored. The grave has covered over a good citizen, a faithful officer and a loving paren. Requiescat in Pace

    SOUTH AFRICAN VETERANS.

The G. T. R. station this morning presented some forcible reminders of South Africa, no less than five of the members of the 2nd C. M. R. having passed through on their way to various points. Of these the only one in civilian attire was Mr. Alf. Oelschlager of Berlin, formerly private in "B" squadron. Mr. Oelschlager, while admitting that South Africa, particularly from a money- making standpoint, has some desirable features, thinks there is no place like Canada. Johannesburg, he says, is nothing if it is not in a ferment of excitement and everybody there speculates in stocks. The Boers, he thinks, and he has conversed with quite a number are quite as glad to have the war over as the British are. A comrade of Mr. Oelschlager's in the same squadron was Pte. McEwen, who passed through on the westbound train on bis way to Hensall, where he will shortly go west again to Calgary, Mr. Oelschlager took the train northward bound, being on his way to Sault Ste. Marie and among his fellow-passengen were Ptes. Parsons, Bell and Monkman, all of "O" squadron. Pte. Parsons was bound for Fergus, and Pte. Bell for Lakelet, while Pte. Monkman is going on to Mount Hope. Guelph Mercury.

    SAD DEATH
Untimely End of Miss Martha Oelschlager, Daughter of Mr. Alf. Nischlager.

The many friends and acquaintances of Miss Martha Oelscalager, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alf. Oelschlager, Duke street, were greatly shocked this morning when the sad intelligence of her death was received. The deceased suriered from an attack of typhoid fever, and was removed to the B. & W. Hospital last week. Her illness was of a severe nature, but it was confidently expected that she would recover on account of her unusually robust constitution. On Monday, however, her condition became more critical and at an earty hour this morning she passed away. The deceased was in her 17th year, and was a general favorite amongst a large circle of friends. During the last few months she has been employed at Miss Lowes' millinary store. Her untimely demise will, be an irreparable loss to her bereaved parents, and the sympathy of the community will be extended to them, especially to Mrs. Oelschlager, who is at present lying at the Hospital also suffering from a severe attack of typhoid fever. Funeral announcement will appear in tomorrow's Telegraph,

The funeral of the late Miss Martha Marie Oelschlager took place on Thursday afternoon from the residence of her parents, Francis street, to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, which was filled to its utmost capacity with sorrowing friends and acquaintances. The pall bearers were Masters L. Wuest, H. Wuest, J. Waldschmidt, J. Iluether, J. Bluhm and J. Gerbig. Interment took place at Mount Hope cemetery. The friends of Mrs. Alf. Oelschlager mother of the deceased, will be pleased to learn that she is recovering nicely and has borne the sad death of her daughter with true Christian fortitude.
