    Notes:

The Late James Monaghan - The death took place at his home near New Hamburg last Thursday, October 27th, of Mr. James Monaghan, at the age of 70 years. He had been failing in health for about a year, but was confined to bed for only a few days. His death therefore was a shock to his many friends. The passing of Mr. Monaghan removes another member of the pioneer stock of this community. His grandfather, Patrick Monaghan, and his father, John Monaghan, came from the County of Armagh, Ireland, in the pioneering days of this district and hewed out a domicile in the primeval forest, where three generations have since made their home. In both religious and civic affairs the late Mr. Monaghan took an active part. A Roman Catholic in faith, he was instrumental in erecting the present edifice of his church in New Hamburg and served as a church trustee for many years. He likewise labored for forty years for the benefit of held on Monday forenoon from his which he took great interest. He was a director of the Wilmot Agricultural Society for the past ten years and in politics a staunch Liberal. Always a kindly disposed friend and neighbor, his memory is revered by all who knew him. He leaves his sorrowing widow, four sons and three daughters to mourn his demise. The children are Dr. Hugh Monaghan, surgeon in Lady-at-Victory Hospital, Lackawanna, N.Y., Joseph and James, of Kitchener, William, at home, Mary of St. Joseph's Hospital, Guelph, Laura, teacher at Petersburg, A. Marie, teacher at Parkhill. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs. (? words missing) the orphanage at St. Agatha, in grandchildren. The funeral was Philip Sehl of Waterloo, and three late home to Holy Family Church and the RC Cemetery and was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing friends and neighbors. Requiem mass was held by the Parish priest, Rev. Father Arnold, and Rev. Father J. Dantzer of St. Columbian.

    Fatally Injured In Auto Accident

John E. Buckel, Former Now Hamburg Resident, Died In Toronto Hospital

The death took place in St. Joseph's Hospital, Toronto, early on Tuesday morning of John E. Buckel who was seriously injured in a head on auto collision on the provincial highway near Oakville on Saturday evening. Mr. Buckel was returning from Port Credit to his home in Brantford, having as passengers his 13 year old son, John, and C. A. Chittenden, of Kainsville, and J. A. Bernadine, of Brantford, who were all injured but are reported to be out of danger. Mr. Buckel suffered severe head injuries, a broken arm and knee cap and succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the other car, Wm. Foreman, aged 24, of Detroit who figured in the smash up was instantly killed and another passenger in his car was also injured.

The accident occurred about four miles east of Oakville and according to reports the Foreman car got half way into the ditch and in trying to get back onto the pavement Foreman lost control and smashed into the Buckle car. An inquest into the accident will be held on Friday.

DRAGO, Helen Marie (nee Sehl) Peacefully, with her children at her side, at the Columbia Forest Long Term Care Residence on Wednesday, October 10, 2018. Helen lived a 94-year faith-filled life and is now in the loving embrace of her husband Louis, her parents John and Anne Sehl, her brother Edward and his wife Betty. She will be fondly missed and lovingly remembered by her six children Anne Hind (George), Rick, Cathy Weiss, Jim (Sheree), Louis (Joanne), David (Mary Jo). Helen was the loving Nana and great-grandmother to Jon Hind (Erica, Colbey and Kristian), Becky Kieswetter (Kory, Sam, Molly and Ben), Nathan Drago (Amanda, Lucas, Cameron and Avery), Sarah Weiss, Allison Drago, Amy and Brook McArthur, Jimmy Drago (Laura, Khailee and James), Michael Drago (Lesley, Max and Millie), Matthew Drago, and David and Kelsey Drago. Helen will be lovingly remembered by her brother Dr. John Sehl and our aunt Mary, and 11 nieces and nephews in the Sehl family, as well as, her nephews Martin and John Levesque. Helen was a proud native and life-long resident of Waterloo. She was born and raised on Union St. and earned a Bachelor's degree in Library Science from the original Waterloo College, now WLU. Helen used her degree to secure a position at the Main St. branch of the Niagara Falls Public Library where she met her husband Lou. Together they raised our family in a modest red brick home on Dietz Ave (too far away from Union St. for her father's liking!) and became founding members of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and its neighbouring elementary school. Helen's life is celebrated by deeply-rooted faith and service to her church and greater community. She led an active life as member and president of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Women's League; the Our Lady of Lourdes St. Vincent de Paul Society, and the Our Lady of Lourdes Refugee Committee. Helen used her library skills not only to borrow numerous books per week from the Waterloo Public Library (she was, to say the least, a voracious reader), but to serve terms as Chair of the Waterloo Public Library Board. After raising her family, Helen was invited to pursue involvement in the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises. She became a Spiritual Director and was part of the formative team of the Canadian Congress of Christian Life Communities. Many religious and laity, alike, have benefited from her spiritual direction. While our mother's life has passed, her memories live on in family gatherings at our homes, trips to the slots, Sunday afternoon drives, baseball games on the television, Hagan Daas ice cream, innate fears of thunderstorms, fun with fireworks, cottage adventures, french fries from McDonald's, and remarkably long talks on the phone. Mom's passing has eased our fears of death. Our mother's in heaven and we long to have her hug us again. We would like to express sincere thanks to the many Personal Service Workers from the community and Columbia Forest for their dedicated care for Helen. Friends and family are invited to share their memories of Helen during visitation at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home , 171 King St. S., Waterloo, on Monday, October 15, 2018, from 6 - 8 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 173 Lourdes St., Waterloo, on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. Burial to follow the Mass at Parkview Cemetery. Reception to follow the burial at the funeral home. Condolences for the family and donations to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul may be arranged through the funeral home at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.

Lifetimes: Dr. Jack Sehl a gentleman respected by doctors and patients alike

"He took the job as chief of staff to help rebuild the hospital. He was a tremendous leader at St. Mary's."

by Valerie Hill Waterloo Region Record

WATERLOO - In a five-page narrative written in 2001, 73-year-old retired surgeon, Dr. Jack Sehl, wrote about what he hoped to be remembered for.

With such a long career as a gynecologist/obstetrician, chief of staff, lecturer, counsellor, leader and humanitarian, his list should have been book-sized but that wasn't Jack. He wrote that his greatest achievement had been the six, well adjusted and happy children he raised with his wife Mary.

Secondly, he was proud that as a couple they were generous benefactors to many organizations in Waterloo Region.

"We always felt it was necessary to share our good fortune," he wrote.

In an interview, Mary said "he was the greatest humanitarian ... but he didn't want anyone to know about it."

She recalls in 1974 when Jack volunteered at a hospital in Honduras with his Kitchener-Conestoga Rotary Club and on return to Canada, led a successful fundraiser to have a well dug for the hospital.

"He was an extremely humble guy," said son, Dr. Mike Sehl, who called his father an extraordinary fundraiser for causes, but one who refused to accept credit.

That kind heart also made Jack an exceptional medical doctor.

Chief of Hospitalist and Family Medicine for Grand River and St. Mary's, Dr. Brian Kelly, recalled his deep admiration for Jack.

"He was a model physician," said Brian. "He was always available. He was considerate, patient, you could call any time day or night.

"He was always interested in helping his patients."

Brian referred to Jack as one of those old fashioned gentlemen doctors, highly ethical and caring. "He was a standout," he said.

Jack was born April 8, 1928 in Waterloo, the youngest of three. Jack graduated from the University of Western Ontario medical school in 1954 then travelled to Mercy Hospital in Detroit for a specialization in obstetrics and gynecology. At the time, the U.S. was eagerly accepting medical students though Jack received more than just training.

There was a very pretty head nurse in orthopedics that his friend was telling him about. But she was engaged and Jack had someone back in Waterloo. Then fate brought them together. Jack needed help to put a Buck brace on a patient's leg and Mary Kreusel had to show him how. Thereafter, he nicknamed her "Buck."

She says at the time, she didn't really think there was a spark between them, at least not until she happened to look out her office window where she could see Jack in a nearby building, picking up the phone and suddenly her heart skipped. Was he calling her?

Turns out he wasn't, but it was a pivotal moment for Mary. She obviously had feelings for this guy so she broke off her engagement, which she had been considering anyway. The two married in April 1956.

In 1959, following Jack's four-year residency, the couple chose to settle in Jack's hometown. Mary gave up her nursing job and became a stay-at-home mom though when the children were older she helped in Jack's office.

During his first few months in Kitchener, Jack shared an office with an uncle, also a family doctor which meant you never really knew what to expect. After an incident involving lice, Jack made it clear he would only practice gynecology and obstetrics and the rest of his career was spent at St. Mary's and Grand River hospitals.

In his narrative, Jack spoke about how he helped establish prenatal classes, allowed fathers in the delivery room, created family-centred maternity care, fetal monitoring, laser gynecological surgery, along with other modern advancements.

He had served as chief of staff and president of medical staff so he knew the hospital well, an important skill after St. Mary's lost several departments which were moved to the general.

Brian said "He took the job as chief of staff to help rebuild the hospital. He was a tremendous leader at St. Mary's."

As chief, Jack focused on attracting surgeons to St. Mary's and improved how the operating room was run. He also helped establish short stay surgical wards, an outpatient surgical ward and same-day admission for surgeries which saved the hospital millions of dollars.

In his narrative, Jack wrote "this job was the most difficult that I ever attempted but was also the most rewarding."

Though he retired from practicing medicine in 1992, Jack had remained chief of staff for that extra year, ensuring the process he had started would continue. Even after retiring, however, Jack, already in his 80s, continued to assist in the operating room, at least until he had a small stroke. Mary put her foot down and he had to retire fully.

Brian remembers that level of dedication and said "I became chief because I admired how he did it. He generated a lot of physician trust."

Retired from medicine, yes, but not from working. Jack ramped up his volunteerism, joining the Catholic Counselling Centre board when they were fundraising for a new building, an initiative Jack headed up and for which he received a volunteer of the year award.

His faith was very important to Jack and in 2003 he receive a Papal Order, Knight Commander of St. Gregory the Great, followed in 2016 with a Chancellor John Sweeney Award for Catholic Leadership.

Daughter Anne Marie Hammer said "Our father taught us many important things in life but one of the areas that was most fun for him and us, was the variety of sports including how to swim, ride a bike, play tennis and hit the golf ball. I think the most treasured by all of us was how to ski."

In an eulogy, son Mike summarized his father with these thoughts: "Our dad was a selfless man. His greatest joy came from serving others. He was a dreamer and dared his children and grandchildren to do the same."

Jack died of heart failure Jan. 13, 2019.

Jack shared his passion for tennis, golf, and skiing at Talisman with his children. He encouraged their participation in academics and believed in their success. As the family grew, he shared his enthusiasm with his children's spouses and his grandchildren. Jack was a faithful parishioner of St. Louis Catholic Church and raised his entire family with guidance from the Holy Spirit.

Beyond his complete involvement with his family, he was also very involved in his community and lead by example. He was a life-long member of the Kitchener-Conestoga Rotary Club and was President in 1975. As President of the Catholic Family Counselling Centre, he chaired the fundraising campaign to construct "the house that Jack built". He was also Chair of the District Health Council. For all of his contributions, Jack was bestowed the Papal Order, Knight Commander of St. Gregory the Great in 2003 and The Chancellor John R. Sweeney Award for Catholic Leadership at St. Jerome's University in 2016, where he was celebrated by his appreciative community.

    Joan Elizabeth Sichewski

    Thursday, April 11th, 1935 - Wednesday, October 18th, 2023

We lost our most beloved mother and nana/grandma on Wednesday October 18, 2023, due to a heart attack.

Joan leaves behind her grieving daughter Kathy-whom she called her Angel (Jim), sons Paul (Pauline) and Mark (Sandy). Proud nana/grandma to Chris (Lisa), Steve (Joanne), Kathryn (Mason), Lisa, Michael (Kat) and Scott. Predeceased by her husband Alexander (2013) and son Michael (1987).

Joan was born in Waterloo, an only child to Jerry and Kay Sehl. Her growth of friends from grade 10, became her sisters and were her family to this day. Joan trained as a lab technologist at K-W hospital and gave the valedictory speech just weeks after her father passed away from a heart attack while hunting. Joan and Alex met through their love of baseball at the Intercounty games. This is when she said : "I became aware of the name Alex Sichewski". They were married for 58 years strong. Joan was a proud member of the CWL which she joined in 1956 and just received her 65 yr pin. In 2014, she was the corresponding secretary for 4 years. Also a member of the Waterloo Knights of Columbus retirees.

Mom was very involved with the church and as a faithful member of St Agnes and St Louis parish, she played the piano at St Agnes in the gym until the new church was built.

During her time at St Louis she served as a Eucharistic minister, prayer reader, an Out of the Cold volunteer and member of the Society of the Little Flower She was always ready to help in many other ways to serve the community. She was a member of the Carmel of St Joseph and The Apostles of the Resurrection since its inception in 2014. She proudly wears her pin. Joan as we all know was a fashionista and social butterfly. Her social calendar was busier than most. She was full of love and vitality. She loved her bridge games, Chase the Ace but disliked losing at scrabble. To her wealth of so many friends, too many to name, please know that you were a very special part of her life and she loved you all deeply.

Many thanks to the paramedics and the police officers who were there in an effort to save mom's life. You were all very compassionate for our loss.

No words can describe the pain and sadness that we are all feeling, but we are comforted by the thought that nana went quickly, with no pain and is now home with dad and Michael. In the children's own words, remember:

    "Death has no agenda
It is something we cannot change
So live your life to the fullest
In honor of your loved ones name"
