Funeral of the Late Aaron Stager [City of Cambridge Archives - no date or publication info of the obit]

The large number of citizens and friends who turned out to attend the funeral of the late Aaron F. Stager on Saturday testified to the esteem in which he was held in the community. The service which was conducted by Rev. W. O. B---[illegible] assisted by Rev. W. H. Harvey of Waterloo and Capt. Howlett of the S. A. [Salvation Army] of Kitchener were most impressive. As the merchants closed their place of business from two to four there was a large representation of the business men of the town as well as the school board of which he was a member, and also the council as well as hundreds of citizens. The floral tributes were many and came from private individuals as well as the various organizations, a beautiful bouquet of mums being sent by the school children. The Salvation Army band was present and led the funeral procession. The pall bearers were: -- R. J. Phin[?], O. M. Schnitz [?, Wellington Mc..?, J. B. Darwin, J. A. Beattie and A. A. Panabaker.

Death of A. F. Stager [City of Cambridge Archives - no date or newspaper name. G. E. Hudson, Editor and Proprietor]

Mr. Aaron F. Stager passed away yesterday evening about six o'clock. The end was not unexpected for he had been ill for months with a malignant disease, though it is only during the past month that he has been confined to his bed, his indomitable will power keeping him up during the summer. The late Mr. Stager was the son of the late Henry Stager and was born in Waterloo County sixty one years ago. As a young man he served his apprenticeship as a machinist in the Karch foundry. He afterwards spent a couple of years in Sarnia, but with that exception he has been a resident of Hespeler and vicinity all his life. For the past twenty six years he has conducted a furniture and undertaking business here, and his integrity, and his good business dealings made him many friends. Apart from his business, too, he was one of the best liked men in town, a good companion on the bowling green, or wherever he might be. He was one of the foremost among the merchants in espousing any cause for the town's advancement. As a member of the School Board he was invaluable and as chairman of the property committee he spent days and weeks on the job while the new addition was being built, and superintended the laying out of the lawns around the school. It is questionable if another citizen could be found who would devote as much time to the work of the school board as the late Mr. Stager did during his term of office. But his work in assisting to make Hespeler beautiful will carry his name down with the history of Hespeler. Some three years ago the Parks Board turned over three or four lots in "Corktown" to the council to re-sell as the board had as much land as they could look after. This had been a dump heap for years and when the foundation for the school was built, considerable of the earth was put on the lots to cover up the rubbish. It was shortly after this that the town put the lots up for sale, and Mr. Stager bought them. Since then they have been turned into a small but extremely pretty park. With Mr. Stager's natural retiring disposition he did not desire that the park should bear his name, but called it Laurel Park. Beautiful flower beds, and a rustic band stand as well as stretches of fine lawn make the park an oasis for the people of the section. Several other lots in the rear were acquired by Mr. Stager, and here tennis courts were laid out, and there is a place for the kiddies of the section to play ball. All this was done by Mr. Stager at his own expense, with the exception of some financial assistance for the band stand from the Women's Institute. He has been for a great many years a member of the Methodist Church, being a member of the Quarterly Board and the Vice President of the Brotherhood. As a citizen and as a man the late Aaron Stager had few equals. Besides his sorrowing wife, he leaves to mourn his loss, one daughter, Mrs. E. L. Foster, and two sons, Charles and Harry all of Hespeler. Two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Werlich of Brantford, and Mrs. Wm. Werlich of Preston, and three brothers, John of Mannheim, and Samuel and Arnold of Waterloo Tp., survive. The funeral will be held from his late residence, Galt. St. on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

    Vignettes of a Life

Harry K. Stager wrote about the horse he loved.

"I was about four or five years old the day my father came down the street, past our house leading a beautiful black mare. He used to keep a horse to deliver furniture and it was always black so it could be used in the funeral business....she used to pull the wagon we used to deliver furniture and she would team up with another black horse from Johnny Sudden's livery stable to pull the hearse when Dad had a funeral....we always called her 'Old Fan.' I don't know why... because she was very young....We had a big willow tree at the back of the stable that was right beside the Speed River. Often I would tie Fan up to the tree and spend hours cleaning her....When I was ten or eleven years old, Dad would sometimes load the wagon up with furniture and I would take it out to some farmer, maybe 5 miles out of town. Dad would draw a map for me to follow, and the farmer would take the furniture off the wagon and then I would start back home. One day I lost the map on the way home and I didn't know which road to take. So I just let Old Fan go and she knew the way and brought me home safe and sound. We kept her until about 1919 when Dad bought a truck to deliver furniture. Then Dad took her out to Uncle Arne's farm where she stayed until she died.
